This was not the most pleasant experience, because Fratsfa was a very old city that had been steeping in magic of many kinds for centuries. The background was a muck of bits and pieces of spells accumulated, pressed together by the addition of more magic on top of it, deformed by that pressure and by age, uniting into compound magical structures that no magician had ever visualized, almost breeding with each other. Fratsfa had the highest incidence of spontaneous magical activity of anyplace other than Chaos-contaminated ground such as the marshy plain near Delarq Tor. And when it was happening without the guidance of even a deranged mind, you didn't need the residual effect of Chaos Magic to twist the results into strange forms. Some parts of the background magic here were alive. Against this background, real, living, practicing magicians moved like thieves in a crowd: sometimes you saw them, sometimes you didn't. Picking out possible allies and enemies wasn't easy. Fandil snorted. If it was easy, they wouldn't need him. He began to sort and filter his impressions, and the first thing he discovered was another magician, also scanning. Younger, though no child. Not a clear signature, male, human, mixed motives. But strong, and even with mixed motives, he might be willing to make himself useful-- A blast of energy like a portculis falling, like a guilotine. Like being hit in the head with an axe, but not, Fandil decided as he picked himself up off the floor, quite as bloody and final. What had happened was clear enough: some magician of considerable power had broken the beginning of contact between Fandil and the young mage before it had a chance to develop. Possibly had killed the young man, which would be unfortunate. The old mage extended his magical sense again, not as easily--even thinking hurt at the moment. The magical background was seething, the Fratsfan magicians had either gone into hiding or were doing the equivalent of standing on their doorsteps shouting at each other. Not helpful. Well, looking back at the brief contact, it was not Fandil's impression that the young man was HERE. Within fifty miles, probably closer, but not right here in the city. North and west. Maybe in... Andor? A hopeful thought, they could use a contact in the capital. He reached out--and came up against a wall of magic. No contact with Andor was possible from here. He would have to go closer physically if he wanted to pursue that connection. Or wait until the arcanum cleared, this kind of barrier took amazing amounts of energy to sustain. But he had a feeling, growing stronger by the moment, that they didn't have the time to wait. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #20 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Fratsfa: Lenpro was no magician, but he could tell that something had happened...even if two men over in the corner hadn't been screaming and holding their heads. Something magical, probably. He put down his beer, took the glass out of Dandy's hand--he didn't want to know what weird concoction was in it--and stood. "We have to get back to the Flower Shoppe," he said. "Fandil may need me." ***** *** ***** *** ***** Fandil was okay. That was a relief, but not entirely unexpected. His brother was tough, and experienced; he would know how to defend himself. Against...whatever that had been. He raised an eyebrow inquiringly. "I don't know either," Fandil said. "Some kind of magical barrier, yes. But whether it's intended to seal up the magical activity of Fratsfa, or block magical communication with somewhere else--Andor, for instance, or what exactly was intended...?" He shrugged. "I don't know who, I don't know why. But I think we need to go to Andor physically and soon." "I thought you were concerned about the safety of Emperor Alonj," Lady Fern said. "We are," Lenpro answered quickly. "But I would think we could leave that in your capable hands, sister." Fern frowned but nodded. "I'll take care of it." Amen-Tei: Senator Sedalia looked at his hands and sighed. The oars had rubbed them into blisters, despite the gloves he'd worn. His back ached. And he loathed the clothing that went with his costume. Would anyone here in Amen-Tei seriously believe that he was an itinerant peddler? At least the gods favored him in one thing, and Senator Dole was no longer resident in this town. He couldn't have fooled Dole for a minute; one senator always knew another. Sedalia had argued with the demon on the Black Ship, Tashkemk, that this masquerade was unnecessary and would be unconvincing, but arguing with demons turned out to be monumentally unproductive. In a human, the senator would have suspected a simple enthusiasm for the theatrical, but did that apply to demons? But the worst was that Tashkemk had insisted that the senator's companion, Gissanniah, remain on the Black Ship as a hostage for his, Sedalia's, performance. Dammit, he had given the demon his WORD. If they couldn't trust him, why employ him on this fool's errand? And when he'd asked what guarantee HE had of the young woman's safety, the demon had just LAUGHED. All of which put the senator in a really bad mood, so that when a dockhand slouched up and sneered at the wretched little boat, skiff, whatever was the proper term, why, he let fly with some harsh language that would have blistered the hide on a rhinoceros. Which, Sedalia pointed out in a calmer afterthought, the dockhand rather resembled--big, ugly, stupid, with a misshapen nose, and a singularly unlovely attitude. It turned out that this was precisely the way one should approach sneering dockhands, and the fellow tethered the vessel to the dock in some appropriate manner--Sedalia didn't want to know the details--and helped unload the cargo. The senator didn't care about most of the cargo. Yes, it was valuable, but it was just stuff, and a man who couldn't pour out wealth to achieve a goal had no business in politics. Still, it wouldn't do to let the dockhand think he had secret agendas, so he asked questions about rental space and then watched closely while the cargo was loaded on a cart, hauled to a sturdy warehouse, and stored in a sealed room. One leather case with a shoulder strap and brass fastenings he kept with him. Cargo dealt with, Sedalia's next goal was a dockside tavern called the Pig's Eye. He had no great hopes of it but found the place cleaner than he'd expected, busy but not raucous. Of course, he had no inherent objection to "raucous," political conventions were always like that. But which of these rather ordinary looking people was his contact? What would a demon's contact look like, anyway? It couldn't be another demon, surely, not here in the open. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 304): GOLDENEYE of BONDAGE (Spawn, mgr.) From your favorite Duelmistress, the rest of The Flower Girls, Lady Fern, and all our associates at The Flower Shoppe: We wish you a Merry Christmas. We wish you a Merry Christmas. We wish you a Merry Christmas, And a Happy New Year. May all your boxes under the tree be filled with Flower Girls who will fulfill your every dream. May your New Year be prosperous and you spend all your new found wealth at The Flower Shoppe. Thanks for making Fratsfa the wonderful place it is today. We hope to see you at The Tempe Face in Jan09. The Flower Girls will be working the crowds. (wink) Sizzling Sunflower, Lady Fern, and the rest of The Flower Girls SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt FRATSFA will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference, as ZERO is pushed out of top team by THE ORDER, who came from 2nd with a 4-1-1 this turn. The THE ORDER guild has had a 4-1-1 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, ZOUM LA BOUSE fought HATED MAN and gained 16 points and contributed to BLOOD AND GUTS!'s 2-1-0. HATED MAN has lost to ZOUM LA BOUSE, falling 12 points, while helping make BLEAKER LEGION a 2-3-0 turn. And all eyes were on BRAIN TUMOUR this turn as it ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. FRATSFA has a new victor! By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped under the table at The Victory Tavern? Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. OTTO'S PARTS has cause to stand tall, as they were FRATSFA's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding OTTO'S PARTS more than any other team we find FLOWER GIRLS. FRATSFA, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged warrior this turn was BLEAKER LEGION's warrior HATED MAN. More fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, JANAFIN from LORDS OF DUSK challenged up 25 points to fight KOZAK from the THE ORDER stable. JANAFIN perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she beat KOZAK and ended up with 26 recognition points. We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and shave it close? The manager of BLEAKER LEGION will not be pleased to learn that WEAKNESS, a 3-0-0 fighter, has been killed at the hands of FRATSFA's VISITING ORC. Is it really true that FRATSFA has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask... I like this place, FRATSFA, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in FRATSFA again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BRAIN TUMOUR 3502 20 10 0 102 OTTO'S PARTS (150) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SIZZLING SUNFLOWER 3846 15 8 0 93 FLOWER GIRLS (189) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OUTCAST ORCHID 3870 14 4 1 88 FLOWER GIRLS (189) -PULLED HAMSTRING 3554 10 14 0 87 OTTO'S PARTS (150) SER VON DARKMOOR 3697 10 5 1 80 SILVER KNIGHTS (361) -FOUR 3964 11 3 0 78 ZERO (403) IRMINSUL 3871 8 5 1 76 BLOOD AND GUTS! But maybe you are and you are merely jealous. Ladies of your age can be like that. Perhaps if you stopped in at The Flower Shoppe here in lovely Fratsfa, we can straighten that out and you can go home in bliss? -- Lady Fern Ahh, Brain Tumour, I love it when I get a call from any Otto-With-The-Big-Parts. And, baby, it wasn't your tumor which was the biggest. You pack a BIG weapon, Hon, but, then, I like em big! (giggle) Didn't we have fun? -- Duelmaster (and other Master) Sizzling Sunflower Lena -- All I can say is "I like it like that!" and I hope you did too. (big smile) -- Outcast Orchid Salina -- That may have been harsh, but it was effective, and it got us there fast, didn't it. (wink) -- Harsh Hawthorn Two -- You were two more than I could handle. You are one Big-where-it-counts Studmuffin. We just have to try that again at The Flower Shoppe. Soon. -- Torturing Tulip Bumble -- It was I who bumbled as you were my first. Now I just have to do it again. -- Mad Magnolia Greetings Torak, Lord Of The Order. I sense from your spotlight that you and the Lords Of Dusk are allies and are just trying to spoof us. (wink) Whether you are allies or foes, I suggest that you both visit The Flower Shoppe together for a good ole time. My gals can fulfill every dream. You are both alpha males, so I am sure you know what I mean. Anyway, welcome to you both. -- Lady Fern Le Pentarque -- Welcome back Hon! Now my Shoppe will be busy, I know! I see that your TWO already took advantage of one of my gals. She didn't know whether she was coming or going. -- Lady Fern Lena -- You can call me Sunny and our time together will be nothing but bright. I love food, candles and wine. You can do so much with them all. Soon. -- Sizzling Sunflower Kozak -- The Flower Shoppe is always open to you. My girls will keep you covered. (wink) -- Lady Fern Nice to see that the arena is still lively, and the Girls busier than ever. Let's spill some blood! -- Le Pentarque Well, original Two, sorry for the repeat, I was supposed to be a number stamped on arena meat, but, well, I showed something, and gained a place in the sun. -- Two *Janafin places a rose upon the feet of weakness,* for defeating one of the order. -- Janafin To All -- Any warrior who beats a warrior from The Order, I, Janafin from the Lords of Dusk, will place a rose upon their feet. How many roses can you collect? The count now is Weakness--one. -- Janafin This is Raven, manager of Lords of Dusk. As Torak from The Order pointed out, victory was my goal. I now have a new goal, to bring chaos to order...or The Order. Expect many a challenge from my warriors, Torak. Win or lose, it will be about crossing blades with The Order. -- Raven Welflourn -- Please accept my most humble apologies. I sometimes let my mouth outrun my brain. -- Anastrianna L.O.D. -- My comrade, the Expatriate of the Bleak Legion, is quite impressed with you. It is possible that he and I would be willing to show you the ropes. "Ask and ye shall receive." -- The Order L.O.D. -- Please disregard what I said in my team spotlight. -- Torak, mgr. The Order Nero -- The gods must have favored you. They spared your life for I would not. -- Anastrianna Weakness -- Okay, I will submit to your will. -- Krull All -- Would anyone care for some "Apple" sauce? That is all that is left of my opponent. -- Lankus Aeschylus -- Perhaps a larger shield would be better next time. -- Jasker Lycurgus -- The next time we meet, you will not leave the arena. -- Kozak All -- I am back and wanted everyone to know I shouldn't be going anywhere in the near future. -- Toker, mgr. Silver Knights Lady Fern -- Just wanted to say Hi! -- Toker P.S. Diplo enroute. Lords of Dusk -- A new player? Haven't seen one of those in years. Well, not counting the one I brought with me, but no one pays any attention to Torak. Anyway, first off, you need a name that we can use in polite company. I'm the Expatriate, Commander of the Bleak Legion. Torak is Lord of The Order, Lady Fern is owner of the Flower Girls, etc. Let us know what you come up with. I had a mentor years ago when I first started (it was Klown/CFH if anyone was wondering) so if you want my help, just send me a diplo, that's diplomatic note, with your questions and I'll answer them as I can. Torak is my minion and I taught him to play. You can see how good he's doing. Don't pay any attention to what he says, he's a dipstick, one of my favorite people on this world, but still a dipstick. Consider yourself adopted, heaven help you. -- The Expatriate Lady Fern -- I'm not a newbie. I've been playing on and off for years. I'll have to come by the Shoppe and show you what I know. -- The Expatriate Jorja -- Don't feel bad, most ladies I know are susceptible to flattery to one degree or other. -- The Expatriate Good Evening. We interrupt your regularly scheduled personal ads to bring you the following Special Bulletin: I HATE TOTAL PARRIES. -- The Expatriate (I'm looking at you, La Pentarque) We now return you to your regular personals. Janafin -- Woman, you are a cheap date. You let a girl tire herself out and then didn't teach me anything new. -- Slothful Ollie -- Maybe you should leave the Legion alone. -- Wasted Youth Zoum La Bouse -- I hate your style. -- Lone Soul Le Citoyen -- Well, I saw your Blood but it appears you don't have any Guts. -- Hated Man Krull -- I beat you, again, with my hands (giggle) -- Weakness Four -- I was out-numbered! Ouch. -- Rendor Quil P.S. So much for a winning record, eh? I'll probably never see one of those again. Irminsul -- I wanted a win, and you were standing in the way. That's life in the arena, but at least you got a bunch of skills out of it. And I got to make my teammate Rendor look like the inept bumbler he is. Sometimes I wish I could fight him. Other times I don't. -- Tealin Sali Outcast Orchid -- Wow! If you regularly did things like that, it's no WONDER you were cast out. I hear the Araoi (how did they come to leave out E and U in that?) are kind of straight-laced at home, and you must have rocked their socks off. Life is strange. -- Lena Koril Harsh Hawthorn -- I call it jealousy, just because I've got better curves than you do. Which is the WRONG attitude. So elves are not as, um, voluptuous physically as us orcs, big deal. Play to your strengths. Be sophisticated and decadent instead. -- Salina Rees Wasted Youth -- There's a lot of that going around. Jorja says it isn't even unusual, because when you're young you don't have enough data to make a sound judgment. I dunno if that's true or a crock of it, but it sounds good, doesn't it? -- Ollie Quonsham P.S. She says that the only people who have wasted youths are those who survive and look back and wish they were seeing something else. The ones that don't make it just have short lives, and the ones who don't feel regret, by definition, don't have a wasted youth, just one that's, you know, there. I don't like it when she gets all philosophical. It makes my head ache. Torturing Tulip -- What "we," Tulip? It was your idea. -- Salina Rees Outcast Orchid -- I don't remember, either, but who cares? It was fun, and a revelation. Amazing. -- Lena Koril Lords of Dusk -- The best way to get answers is to ask questions. -- Jorja, the Middle Way Weakness -- I had noticed that. -- Ollie Quonsham Our salute to all Fratsfans who attended the most recent tourney, with special congratulations to Tonelle and Zoum La Bouse, tourney victors. -- Jorja and the Middle Way Lankus -- It's only the Trustworthy Scribe who's a total parry.
