Fratsfa:

"Okay," Lenpro said, "we have to go to Andor. We figured we'd need to do that
eventually. Why sooner?"
"Because someone doesn't want us to," Fandil said. "That, I think, is what the
magical barrier--it's still there, and it must be using an enormous amount of energy
to maintain--that's what it's all about. Cutting off Andor from Fratsfa."
     "From you?"
The old mage shrugged. "I don't know. Maybe. Or cutting off a magician there
IN Andor who is seeking help from Fratsfa. Or both."
"Or even for some reason you haven't thought of," Lady Fern said, "and the
effects you mentioned are secondary."
Both men scowled at her. One may love a sister and still be annoyed at her
unconventional observations and peculiar viewpoint.
"Yes, perhaps," Fandil said after a moment. "But we can't base our actions on
'something we haven't imagined'. We have to work with what we CAN think of. Which
is that the barrier is a sort of magical 'divide and conquer' effort."
"Which makes it a reason for you to go," Lenpro said, "but I don't--"
The door banged open, letting in the smell of flowers from the back room of the
shop and one of Lady Fern's gladiators. Sizzling Sunflower posed in the doorway,
radiating excitement and energy. "Someone's kidnapped a couple of girls! People are
saying it was monsters!"
"Just 'monsters', nothing specific?" Lenpro asked.
"Well, the description sounds like a werecat half-changed," the gladiatress
answered. "I didn't know they could hold themselves at that stage, unless it's the
effect of the shape-changer plague?"
"There's already widespread distrust of the Aruaki here," Lenpro said, rising.
"People could even just imagine that the kidnappers are werecats, and it would be
enough to bring about attacks on quite innocent people. I'd better go check on
this." He shrugged apologetically at his brother Fandil and took Sunflower's arm.
"You can lay most of your plans without my presence, can't you?"
     "Yes, of course," Fandil said.
As the door slammed shut behind Lenpro and the Flower Girl, Lady Fern said,
"There might be a physical barrier between Fratsfa and Andor, too, as well as a
magical one."
"What would be the point of that?"
"It would keep Emperor Alonj from going to Andor and taking control of the
government--"
Fandil sat down with a thump. "You're right. I hadn't thought of that. But is
he ready to go?"
Fern shrugged. "That isn't the point. If the king is truly dead--" She held
up a hand. "I know, you're almost certain. It's just, well, it feels odd to say it.
Like that makes it more real. Anyway, if there is going to be some new ruler, the
sooner he's in place, the better. Because whoever gets there first will have an edge
in any, ah, dispute. If Alonj isn't first--"
"But there isn't anyone else," Fandil said. "The people won't accept an elf
from Ardivent or an Aruaki at present, and the High Thane of Convincia is too old.
Raltumas...not a chance, especially not now that Aradi has seceded; their political
credit is no good. So who else could there be?"
"Someone you haven't thought of yet," she said, ignoring his theatrical groan.
"Someone who's trying to usurp control, maybe for himself or maybe as an agent for
some enemy--the Karnhorns, maybe. How should I know? But there's someone stirring
this pot, Fandil. That's the person you have to identify and stop."

Fratsfa:

It was one of the worst parts of the city. Calling it a slum would be an insult
to honest slums elsewhere. Lenpro's first instinct was to hustle the Flower Girl out
of there. How did she even come to know such an area? He glanced sideways at
Sizzling Sunflower. It might be better to ask how she could help finding it.
Sunflower was leaning close to a man, talking earnestly. Persuasively, because
his firm gestures of refusal were becoming uncertain. Very persuasively, because she
finally took him by the arm and brought him over to Lenpro. As he watched them
approach, the manager was impressed with how carefully the stranger did not attempt
to take any liberties with the Flower Girl.
"This is Two-finger Tom," Sunflower said. "He saw what happened, and he'll tell
you what he saw."
"Yeah, well." The man squinted at him, looked around carefully, leaned closer.
His breath was bad. "I seen some of those cat men grab a couple of decent girls.
Dragged 'em off, they did. I reckon that has something bad in mind."
Lenpro resisted the urge to step away from this case of walking halitosis. "We
can't go by what you 'reckon'," he said. "What do you know for sure?"
"That a coupla those Aruaki--" Two-finger Tom spat, narrowly missing Lenpro's
boot, "they grabbed a coupla human girls and dragged them off. Down that way," he
added, jerking his head toward the river. "No telling what they might do to the
girls. Cats. You can't trust 'em."
"Then we'd best go look for the girls." Lenpro glanced around at the crowd that
had gathered. "A group of us are going to look for the girls who were taken," he
said. "A disciplined group, not a mob."
Someone in the back of the crowd laughed. "Sounds to me like a mob--a LYNCH
mob--is what's needed here."
"Yeah, we can start by killing all those beast-men! More beast than man, THEY
are!" someone else yelled. Also someone in the back that Lenpro couldn't see. The
crowd stirred and muttered, some in agreement and some not, but the agreement seemed
to have the upper edge.
"No killing out of hand!" Lenpro shouted back. "That isn't the Andorian Way--"
The first man took up the argument again, his voice dripping contempt. "The
'Andorian Way' is just a pretty toy the elves and beast-lovers came up with to hobble
us honest humans! That 'Andorian Way' isn't worth spit!"
The crowd stirred and muttered. A lot of the mutters seemed to be in agreement
with the hecklers.
"Show yourself!" Lenpro demanded. "If you have courage in your convictions,
step forward and show your face."
The crowd stirred and a man came forward. Was thrust forward, perhaps against
his will, by the people around and behind him. He looked defiant, truculent.
He looked Karnhorn. Lenpro knew that racial stereotyping was often unfair, but
he needed to discredit this man before the crowd became a mob. "Is this the Karnhorn
party line you've been handing out?" he asked, keeping his voice calm, idly curious.
"It sounds like it, and you look like it."
More stirring in the crowd, mutters, a wave of suspicion. If there was a
lynching, this man might be first, and he could see it. "I'm no Kjarran-lover," he
growled. "Don't go putting words in my mouth!"
"Somebody's been putting them there," Lenpro said. "Somebody with his
headquarters in Zuwayza, I'd guess." He held up a hand and stopped the surge of the
crowd--for now, at least. "You didn't want us to wait for facts before lynching
Aruaki, why should we wait for facts before lynching you?"
     "I'm not--!"
Someone threw a stone, Lenpro couldn't see who. It arched up over the heads of
the crowd and struck the possible Karnhorn on the side of the head so that he
staggered and fell, blood running down the side of his face.
The crowd roared and became a mob, maddened and excited by the blood, by having
a target for hostility that had been festering. Lenpro cursed and pushed Sunflower
back. He wanted the heckler for questioning, but he wasn't going to get the man.
The mob would see to that--and maybe that mob had been triggered by his accomplice
who didn't want questions asked. He wanted to go in search of the missing girls, but
he suspected that wasn't going to happen right away, either. The witness, informant,
that Sizzling Sunflower had found was in the thick of the mob.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

It's nice to be back here this turn. To celebrate, we'd like to try and welcome back
a full stable of parts. However, I'm not sure I know how to do that. I'm not the
sharpest knife in the drawer.

To Sizzling Sunflower, I'd like to say, "Not tonight, deary, I've got a headache,"
but I won't because she's off to the Isle.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
FRATSFA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now keep the taverns open late
tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for ZERO, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them
by 6 into 8th. Ha! OTTO'S PARTS turned their 3-1-0 turn into a 7th place rank in
the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee,
I'm impressed, a 4-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, BLOOD AND GUTS!, the Fates teach
humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see
WHIRLING ZONE win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, TWO beat HARSH
HAWTHORN and HARSH HAWTHORN lost 14 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out
with the old, in with the new, as TEALIN SALI takes the Title and last week's bar tab
from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I
telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, FRATSFA?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
FRATSFA, I am losing what little hope I had in you. BLOOD AND GUTS! the most avoided
team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And it looks like OTTO'S PARTS
avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me.
Hmph. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, LANKUS was this turn's most challenged
warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave
team is developing these kinds of weapons?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of FRATSFA. I feel much better now. Paste this one in your
scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

The Order -- Well done! A 4-1-1! We would avoid, but my gals think you are all so
cute that they WANT you. (wink) Give 'em a chance and they will show you the time
of your lives. See you at The Flower Shoppe. -- Lady Fern

Toker -- Welcome back. Glad to see of your return. Have not rec'd diplo yet (nor
arena, etc), but Happy New Year, Studmuffin. -- Lady Fern

Orcess Salina -- Enjoy your voluptuousness while you can. I know I am. (wink) --
Harsh Hawthorn

Brain Tumour -- It was only fair that it was your turn to be on top! (giggle) Well,
er, a, fought, Stud. -- Sizzling Sunflower

Lone Soul -- I had a good time. I did. Thanks for the date. And thanks for letting
me be on top. (giggle) Can we do it again at The Flower Shoppe? Can my "sisters"
watch? Or would you like to try us all? (wink) -- Mad Magnolia

Irminsul -- Wow! No one's made me finish that fast in years. You've got the touch
and I loved it! -- Harsh Hawthorn

Lena -- I regularly do things like that. I do. I did you twice in two months. Life
is sweet! -- Outcast Orchid

Lord Davos -- How am I going to make any money if you take THAT long, you Stud.
(wink) And welcome back. -- Torturing Tulip

A salute to Duelmaster Brain Tumour. -- All us Flower Girls

Toker -- Diplo received Jan3. Looking forward to another Fratsfa Quest. I presume
you will be hosting it? With the North Fork (DM47) Turf War in full swing, we would
suggest the June date (15th, I think) would seem an appropriate start, giving time to
advertise and get some others involved. The more the merrier, and the more business
I will draw at The Flower shoppe. (wink) What do you think? -- Lady Fern

And the true faves of Sizzling Sunflower are:
     Morning Star, High/Low, learns defense.
          Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. -- Lady Fern

Happy New Year to you, too! You can guess where we wanted to celebrate! No better
place in Alastari! -- The Blood&Guts staff.

Lankus is an interesting warrior... let's try him with someone very different... and
there is a rose to win. -- Le Pentarque

I'll be back, beautiful Tulip! -- Two

Welcome back, Toker! It's a great pleasure to see that you are still around! -- le
Pentarque

Hey, the Expatriate, I am LE Pentarque... type it correctly or you will often have to
entertain that ugly TP Zoum la Bouse ;)

I may have not have much guts, but I am a sneaky fellow with friends. -- Le Citoyen

     That works.

Please come back, win and teach like that anytime you want, dear Tealin Sali. --
Irminsul

Outcast Orchid -- You just leave me breathless. -- Lena Koril

Ser Ilyn Payne -- That wasn't what I expected, but I'll take it. -- Tealin Sali

Ser Von Darkmoor -- Heck. I'd hoped for a win. Such is life. -- Rendor Quil

Ser Alain Stronhand -- Ah, got a problem there, don't you? -- Salina Rees

Krull -- You know, I hate it when that happens. Next time we meet, try losing. --
Ollie Quonsham

Wasted Youth -- Like I'm going to issue a challenge? As if! -- Ollie Quonsham

Our congratulations to Sizzling Sunflower. -- Jorja and the Middle Way

Slothful -- The weak tire easily, as far as not learning anything... I think your
manager's alliance with The Order is affecting your ability to learn. -- Janafin

Expatriate -- While your offer of adoption sounds great, my warriors begged to
decline your offer. They said that with the alliance between you and Torak, they
don't wish aid from you. A friend of The Order is a foe of the Lords of Dusk. --
Raven

Torak -- You want my warriors to forgive and forget your words, they laugh at the
thought... disregard, indeed! Your name is already scribed upon their blades. --
Raven and the Lords of Dusk

Le Pentarque -- Hey buddy, have you heard from Blackstorm? If so, tell him I was
asking about him. It's good to see you. -- Toker

Crip -- Good to see you're still around these parts, too. I might be looking into
running the Quest 2 contest here in Fratsfa again. What do you think? -- Toker

The Expatriate -- Been awhile! You still in contact with CFH or Abraxis? -- Toker

All -- What does everyone say to another Fratsfas Quest for the Best? Sorry about
leaving before it started last time! I have new rules that were written with Lady
Fern, Le Pentarque, Ghab and a few others' advice. Let me know! -- Toker

Lady Fern -- You got me in trouble with the wife. She thought I was really flirting
with you. I had to explain the "Consortium" to her! Good to be back! -- Toker

Ah, you were flirting with ALL of them?

Wasby -- I should see you this turn. It's good to share an arena again, brother! --
Toker
P.S. I should be reactivating all my old stables as they are all calling to me!

All -- Hope everyone did well who participated at the Face. Hopefully I'll be there
in person next one. -- Toker

Toker -- Well met! As you can see I've been here for a few turns. Like you, I plan
on staying this time. -- The Expatriate
P.S. Is it still Darkknight or has that changed? I was gone a long time.

Ollie -- I actually understood all of that. What does that say about me? -- Wasted
Youth

     That you have big feet.

Raven -- Your first bit of help should have arrived with this turn. -- The Expatriate

Mad Magnolia -- And, thus. -- Lone Soul

Brylon -- Try a smaller weapon. -- Wasted Youth

Tapout (Darkface) -- More like redface or blood red face, even. -- Slothful

L.O.D. -- I don't know what to do first. Should I congratulate you for your victory
over Kozak? Or should I gloat over the demise of Finlock? You and I are not

enemies. If anything, I would like to help you become a better competitor in this
game. A word of advice: you should find another new goal. Crossing blades with the
Order is unwise, despite your ONE victory. -- The Order

Toker -- Long time, no see. Welcome back! -- Torak

Raven -- I've made a public apology and offered my help. What more do you want? --
Torak

Lady Fern -- Okay, parts of Fratsfa aren't a dump. Parts are. -- Debby Tonte
