Fratsfa:

Fandil stared out over Fratsfa from his high window, then shook his head and
turned away to finish stowing a few necessary items into a carpet bag. And told
himself, again, that Lenpro could take care of himself and was probably following up
some hot tip. That he was not, in fact, his brother's keeper, and Lenpro wouldn't
thank him for this dither and fuss. And that he himself had a hot tip to
investigate.
He pulled the carpet bag shut and buckled the strap. All this dithering was
silly, pointless, insulting to his brother, and most of all, not like himself. He
shook it off. It was just a mood, and he didn't need it. He picked up his bag and
glanced out the window one last time. Odd how noisy a city could be--
By all the gods, that wasn't just city noise, it was a mob! Men with clubs were
standing in front of the Flower Shoppe, shaking their fists and shouting! He
couldn't make out the words up here under the roof, so turned and plunged down the
stairs to find out what was going on.
Lady Fern met him at the bottom of the stairs. "Relax, Fandil," she said before
he could speak. "This is just a rented mob, and I've dealt with them before. You
have important work to do, so go and do it."
     "But--"
"I can handle this." She raised an eyebrow. "Do you doubt me?"
The young Fratsfan mage, Elosjon, came from the front room, face white and eyes
staring. "They're calling for 'Fandil the Traitor' to be released to them!" he said.
The look he turned on the older mage was worried.
Fandil cursed mentally but allowed no sign of his annoyance to show in face or
voice. "That is just what people would call me who want to stop me. It is only
words, Elosjon, not truth."
"Did you hear any details?" Fern asked. "Who hired the mob, for instance?"
"Hired...?" The young man blinked and looked over his shoulder. "They were
hired? But why?"
"To make trouble, to stop me finding the magician behind the current
disruptions," Fandil said. "It isn't an unusual move for a politician, you know."
Could this young man be so naive? Hmm, if he'd been head down over the spell-books
since he was old enough to understand them, yes, he probably could be. Was. "We'd
better get going."
"It's Lord Orboj," Elosjon said. "He's the richest man in Fratsfa. Nobody
crosses him--if he names me a traitor, too, I'm through here!"
"Well, if the city and your colleagues are so fickle and easily swayed, you
might do better elsewhere anyway," Fern said. She snorted. "Orboj--he doesn't come
here. I don't cater to his tastes and never will."
Fandil opened his eyes wide. Fern catered to many tastes, if Orboj wanted
something different, he must be strange indeed, and notably perverse.
There had been a lot of coming and going of the Flower Girls while they talked,
but Fandil only noticed it now because one stopped. A redhead of statuesque
proportions and discretely indiscrete garb. She leaned close to Elosjon, linking an
arm through his. "You won't mind going out with ME, in fact, I know you'll like it,"
she half-whispered. "And no one will notice if old Fandil trails along behind us."
She kissed his ear. "I can hardly wait."
Lady Fern laughed. "Be good, Ravishing Redbud! This--"
"I am ALWAYS good," Redbud answered.
Fern laughed again, and Elosjon had turned as red as the woman's hair and seemed
incapable of speech or even thought; he allowed her to pull him out the back door and
didn't notice Fandil following.
"Take care," Fern said as Fandil passed her. "And don't worry about me here, or
about Lenpro either. Ours is a family that copes, you know that." She pushed him
out and shut the door behind him.

        + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #27 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +

The Flower Shoppe was near the edge of the city, and Ravishing Redbud clearly
knew the neighborhood intimately-- Fandil paused and rephrased that thought as he
followed the Lady Protector and young Elosjon: She knew the area very well. She set
a wandering course at the beginning, so that within five minutes no one could have
guessed where they'd started from. And, as the young woman had predicted, people
were looking only at her, not at her companions. The old mage considered adding a
light spell to make himself and Elosjon even less noticeable but decided against it.
Even a minor spell used power, and he might need that power later. And here in
Fratsfa, where there were, if not "lots" of magicians, at least several, the spell
itself might attract unwanted attention.
They were passing through a very modest residential area, small houses, fenced
yards with gardens and laundry on the lines, chickens scratching in the dust, and
dogs that barked as they passed. No mobs, hired or otherwise, no haughty lords, just
plain people. Rather pleasant, if they didn't have such a weight on their future:
Finding out what had happened to the king and working out some way forward for
Andoria as a whole.
The outskirts of the city faded into not-quite-rural, and then into outright
farming country. Small farms, mostly, truck gardens, milk cows, more chickens.
Fandil avoided an aggressive rooster and admitted to himself that he didn't really
like chickens until they came out of the skillet all crispy and golden. Woodlots
here and there along the winding, unpaved road. More woods ahead, from what he could
see--rising ground, hills becoming the Daggerspine Mountains.
He moved closer to the two young people ahead, noting that Redbud had a firm
grip on Elosjon's arm. "Where do you plan to turn back, Redbud?" he asked.
She flung a glance over her shoulder at him, with a smile that would have felled
an unwary young man at fifty paces. "Oh, I think I might go all the way, sir! After
all, I can see that Elosjon wants me to come along...."
Fandil looked at the young mage, whose ears were as red as beets. "Is that so?"
Elosjon muttered something that Fandil took for agreement. But he wasn't trying
to pull away from Redbud, so it might actually be agreement.
"You say your grandfather told you about the Duke of Mountain Home," Fandil
said. "What, exactly and completely, did he tell you? After all, information is
power, and we'll need all we can get--that was a powerful spell we both felt."
Elosjon seemed glad of something to think about other than the Flower Girl who
had hold of him. "My grandfather just told me about the Duke resisting incorporation
into the Andorian League," he said. "How he fought it to the end. And that there
was a son who went away to study magic. Most of what I know--it isn't much--about
how things are now is from Herlas. He said--"
"One thing at a time," Fandil said. "Who's Herlas?"
"You never heard of...? Well, he's a magician from Zensu. Older, he must be, I
don't know, at least forty. Very skilled, but he had a bad reputation."
"Bad as in doing what? Demon worship, human sacrifice, Chaos magic?"
"Oh, NO! Not like that. Well, that I ever heard of. But very, um, ambitious,
and not too how his spells affected other people, you know."
Fandil nodded. He knew. That kind of attitude was common among younger
magicians, and those who didn't grow out of it tended to go down dark paths to a bad
end. One foot on the downward road and the other on a banana peel, as the saying
went. "You say he 'had' a bad reputation. Has this changed?"
Elosjon shrugged and shuffled his feet in the dust of the road. "I don't know.
We don't talk about him any more. Not since he went to Andor to serve in the palace.
If he'd been a dog, Fandil figured his ears would have stood straight up at
that. "Herlas went to serve in the palace?"
"Yes, about a year ago. But I saw him a few months later, just the once, you
know, and he said, well, I didn't understand why he told me, or what he meant by it,
but." Elosjon bit his lip and looked across Redbud at the older mage. "I never knew
Herlas personally, you see, and while I'm fairly good, I'm not the best young
magician in Fratsfa, but he came to ME. And he said I should remember that things
aren't always what they seem, and that 'right and wrong are independent of official
decrees', and that there was a magician around somewhere more powerful than all of us
together. And two wrongs not making a right. A lot of stuff like that. And he said
that there was what he called a 'black heart' in the Daggerspines. I thought about
that a lot after he left, and I remembered what my grandfather told me, and then we
felt the first of the barrier spells, and, well, I made some conclusions. I don't
know if I'm right, but--"
"I suspect you are right. At the least, it will bear looking into. Do you know
how to reach Mountain Home?"
"I think so. I never went, but I did look it up on a map." The young Fratsfan
pointed ahead to where the road they were following bent northward. "There should be
a fork up there, and we take the left-hand branch, south and west and uphill."
Redbud looked right and left. The countryside they were crossing was
increasingly wooded, and there had been no houses for the past few miles. "This is
mostly hunting preserves for the lords of Fratsfa," she said. "We'll need to go
carefully, especially once we turn off the road."
     "Might meet gamekeepers?" Fandil asked.
"Yes, and they could be nasty ones. But there might be other things, too." She
scowled at the nearest trees, already dim with shadow as the sun sank toward the
Daggerspines. "Things they hunt, and not just deer, you know. Boars and bears! I
wouldn't like to meet one of those while we're on foot."
"Simpler to avoid trouble," Fandil agreed, "but if we meet it, we'll deal with
it."
The road bent to the right, and there was the fork. The left-hand branch was
narrow and choked with brush; it didn't look like anyone had passed there in months.
Fandil probed the first wall of brush with his staff. Brambles and saplings bound
together with morning glory vines, but nothing that absolutely denied them passage.
Redbud put her hand on her sword, perhaps thinking of cutting a path, then
hesitated.
"Quite right," Fandil said. "We don't want to leave a clear notice of our
passing this way."
"We'll end up with leaves and bugs down our shirts!" she warned.
"No doubt, but we'll survive that. If one of your nasty gamekeepers found a
clear sign of intrusion and followed us, that would be worse."
"I suppose." She twitched her shoulders as though she was already itching and
then pushed into the brush.
     The other two followed.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
FRATSFA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, BLOOD AND GUTS!, since
FLOWER GIRLS took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Now let's all
watch MIDDLE WAY 8's heads swell from their 4-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big
shots, big talk, big deal. FRATSFA saw the first turn for SEA DOGS, a 4-1-0, and
some teams are scared, others are too arrogant to notice. Take note friends, take
note. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see HATED MAN win a fight and gain
22 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, SER ALAIN STRONHAND beat KOZAK and KOZAK lost 12
points. You're breakin' my heart. BRAIN TUMOUR challenged OUTCAST ORCHID for
FRATSFA's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if variety is the spice of
life, FRATSFA may be getting bland, as BRAIN TUMOUR stays top dog in the city. I'm
not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know
what's new, don't you, FRATSFA?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? BLOOD AND GUTS! was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice?
Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was OTTO'S PARTS. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, LORD DAVOS was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans. I guess I can give a little credit to KRULL of THE
ORDER for challenging up by 22 to LE CITOYEN. KRULL lost to get 30 points of
recognition.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. Now hey, I like to see a death as much as
the next guy, but hey FIRE INC., whyja send FIERY to the Dark Arena, look at his
record, huh? Ya gotta go sometime, and HARSH HAWTHORN's time was this time. Hmmm,
not a bad fighter, had she lived... (what? me pity?). We're all going to die in the
end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in FRATSFA to get a drink than The Victory
Tavern! Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city
of FRATSFA. I feel much better now. I see the crowds are getting restless, I must
leave now-- Snide Clemens

Tealin Sali -- Congratulations! Don't forget your last stop before The Isle is The
Flower Shoppe. We want you to travel in the right frame of mind. -- Lady Fern

Most people travel in a stagecoach.

Slothful -- I LIKE it slow and easy! You really know how to make a woman glow. I
want more, Hon. -- Gloating Gardenia

Tim Soldier -- You seemed a little up tight on our date in the sands. I won't bite!
(Well, maybe just a little.) -- Savage Snowball (gigglingly)

Ser Loras -- I just love a knight with a big weapon. And one who really knows what
to do with it! It was my lucky night. Come on over to The Flower Shoppe and we will
really scorch. -- Torturing Tulip

Whirling Zone -- Well, that was hardly fair, wasn't it? But I like 'em young, so I
was in bliss. Know what I mean? (wink) -- Harsh Hawthorn

Lena, Lena, Lena, we made music together! Luckily they were playing my song. --
Outcast Orchid

Brain Tumour! Duelmaster! Salute. Come on over to The Flower Shoppe and celebrate.
Bring that boss of yours along. He needs to loosen up. -- Lady Fern, Flower Girls

Le Pentarque -- You're French? What arena is that, Studmuffin? (wink) -- Lady Fern

The Expatriate -- Ban TPs? Just like a man! Always impatient. Done in a flash. No
concept of slow and drawn out and built up, and conclusive. (sigh) -- Lady Fern
P.S. Pay a visit to The Flower Shoppe and you will be glad you did.

Mr. Toker -- Comments on the rules were provided on line. That is a GOOD point about
the "paragraph" length. I suspect the rules need to clarify the 5 paragraphs with a
minimum total word length. (say 200?) -- Lady Fern (looking forward to The Quest)

That Hawthorn seemed to like my body... she scratched every inch of little me! --
Whirling Zone

Thanks, Lady Fern! You know where we plan to spend the prizes! -- Blood and Guts.

Ser Galad... I will be back! -- Zoum la Bouse

Toker -- Some clarification on your rules. The statement about if a TP dies, you can
replace it is misleading. What if a TP like Brain Tumour graduates instead of dies.
But I do like your downchallenge variants. I assume you are going to track all
losing challenges to see which were downchallenges, and which went down the most? --
Crip, mgr of Otto's Parts

Irmunsil -- I avoid, and your challenge still gets though. I must improve my running
away technique -- Pulled Hamstring

Ser Von Darkmoor -- You'll be back -- Brain Tumour

Ser Galad, Ser Von & Ser Alain -- Hmm, we seem to have challenged you a lot last
turn. Didn't specifically mean to target you, I guess you just happened to be in the
wrong place in the standings. -- Pulled Hamstring, Fat Lip, & Runny Nose

Outcast Orchid -- I've been thinking about it, and I don't believe we ought to see
each other any more. You know how people say elves and dwarves don't get along well,
so we are just headed for trouble if we keep on. Besides, you have a tendency to
chew on my beard, which I find distracting. -- Lena Koril
P.S. And probably unhygenic.

Ser Ilyn Payne -- I was not designed to deal with elves, I'm pretty sure of that. I
don't know what I WAS designed for, because I didn't even realize I was a golem until
I entered the arena, but I'm pretty sure it wasn't for dealing with elves. -- Rendor
Quil
P.S. I wish my mother had forewarned about the whole golem thing. It was a shock,
you know, finding out that way.

Lord Jon Snow -- A good fight for me to end with, not that it is the absolute end of
my career. I'll be here one last time, after all. -- Tealin Sali
P.S. And probably end up fighting in Crysalis whether I want to or not.

Ser Jaime -- You knights are just popping out of the woodwork here, aren't you? It
must be the season, spring, sap rising, all that stuff. -- Salina Rees

Ser Aerys Oakheart -- This is not the way to win friends, let me tell you! I really
NEEDED a win. Of course, I can see that you needed one, also, though not as badly as
I did. Oh, well. I hear we may be going inactive soon, and that works for me. I've
got hobbies I want to pursue. -- Ollie Quonsham

Whirling Zone -- I know I'm a little thing, but I wasn't wearing any armor and soaked
in sweat at the end, how could you miss the fact that I'm a girl? -- Slothful
P.S. My boss says it's because my leg ain't hairy but I don't get it.

Le Citoye -- Hey sweety, want to play agian? -- Slothful

Le Pentarque -- That explains so much. *grin* -- The Expatriate

Toker -- Thanks for the update on Liam. I sent him a diplo maybe he'll come to the
Quest. Your scoring system looks good to me, simple and to the point. Lets do this.
-- The Expatriate

Savage Snowball -- Well you sure were savage. Good learns, I always did like a smart
girl. -- Tin Soldier
P.S. What kind of flower is a Snowball?

Marius -- I don't know what my manager was thinking giving me that weapon. Lucky for
me yours wasn't paying attention either. -- Jill

Toker -- I hope Raven didn't run off. It took a lot of time to copy the skill
systerm for him, by hand even. -- The Expatriate

All -- Speaking of copies. Does anyone have the critical statements (wit, parry,
etc) list. I seem to have lost mine. Thanks. -- The Expatriate

If the Scribe so trustworthy why is he in the arena? -- Wasted Youth

     Enemies in high places.

Gloating Gardenia -- Looks like someone found her favored weapon. Sorry about that.
Want me to kiss it and make it better? -- Slothful

Lady Protector, you are a lady aren't you? it's so hard to tell with dwarves, Tealin
Sali -- Once again the word has gone out: Make gifts to graduating gladiators. I'm
sure we wish you well, but this has taken us by surprise here at Fratsfa Arena. The
whole business of "lands" is of course nonsense, but we might find something. How
about an ivory comb, obviously magical in a minor way, set with gold and semi-
precious stones and guaranteed to leave your hair and beard clean, untangled, and
attractively curled? No doubt we have better things somewhere, but there hasn't been
much time to search them out. Tell me this will do! -- Mairvonda, Arenamaster
