                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

The Order was founded by me, Torak. I was a young manager who had great
ambitions and dreams. I started out with a team that I called the "Dark Dragons." I
had such high hopes for that team, but that which was my dream was taken from me in
my travels between arenas. My whole team was slaughtered. I thought that I was
dead, and I guess, so did my assailant.
I was found later by a beautiful, yet fierce-looking, woman who called herself
Anastrianna. She nursed me back to health, and along with the aid of her cousin,
Jasker, I was able to find myself again. Both of these individuals are fierce
warriors who lost their families to raids. I don't know what they saw in me, but it
convinced them to leave their home to help me build another team.
Along my travels, I met a couple of very respectable people: Tokec of the
Silver Knights, and the Expatriot of the Bleak Legion. I learned a great deal from
these two men. They gave me the courage and guidance I needed to continue on.
Another very respectable person that I have to visit each time I come to Fratsfa is
the very lovely Lady Fern. The Flower Shoppe is definitely on my favorites list.
With the cousins, Anastrianna and Jasker, I journeyed on; later adding Lankus
and Krull to the roster. We met a part-time member named Kozak, who proved to be
just that: part-time. Making my way back to the great Fratsfa arena, I learned of
the chaos that is rocking the world of Alastari. I was both angered and amazed at
everything that was going on.
I decided that, with the help of my team, I was going to try to bring order to a
world full of chaos. In this quest, I have named Jasker as my scout and Anastrianna
as my champion. After much arguing over what we would call ourselves and many weeks
of healing, it was the lovely Anastrianna who simply said, "Order." After looking
dumbfounded for a moment, I smiled. Since then, we were simply that, The Order, and
we will bring that to the world.

Fratsfa, more or less:

"We have to get out of here now," Lenpro said, urging Sizzling Sunflower toward
the gate of this arena. "Even if we can't find the portal to take us back to the
true Fratsfa--"
"Will they let us go?" the Lady Protector asked. She glanced to the side and
saw that Lenpro had his own sword out. Oddly, she'd never thought of him as being a
warrior--he was so old! But he managed gladiators, trained them, and he'd lived a
long time in a world where violence was not uncommon.
"Can they stop us, except by magic?" the manager asked. "And I have a feeling
their half-demon mage will be busy trying to keep control of things now that you've
beaten his--I think the vampire was his enforcer."
"I don't know for certain that the vampire's dead," Sunflower warned. "They're
tricky to kill."
"Doesn't matter," the manager said, steering her to her right. They hurried
down another street, not running, because if you ran, there was always something or
someone who would automatically give chase. "Even if it isn't dead, or what passes
for dead among vampires, it was hurt and won't be up to giving us trouble before we
can get out of here." He swerved to the left into an alley, and she followed.
"Do you know where we're going?" Sunflower asked. "Not that I care much at the
moment, as long as it's 'away'."
"I've got a good idea which way the Portal lies," Lenpro said. "Fandil is the
magician in the family, but there are other kinds of skills."
"If you can find and open the Portal back to Fratsfa--"
"I can find it," Lenpro said. "I'm nearly certain I can find it. But opening
it might present problems. Unless there's someone on hand who can be coerced. I do
coercion from time to time."
     "Good. So do I."
They turned another corner, and Lenpro pointed ahead. An archway of mismatched
stones straddled the way ahead of them, framing grayness. "There's our portal," he
said.

Andor:

Outcast Orchid stared back toward the avenue and the slaughter of the "king" by
out-of-work gladiators. "I don't believe it! Those gladiators were waiting to kill
the king--the golem they thought was the king. How could they do such a thing?"
"You saw how," the man beside her said.
     "Yes, but--"
"Gladiators come all kinds, just like ordinary people," he went on. "Some good,
some bad, and a lot of them on the fence. And this hasn't been a good town for a
gladiator since the arena closed. They were probably so glad to have a job that they
didn't look into it closely."
"You're saying someone paid them to--?"
"Of course." He steered her into an alley just before a troop of mounted guards
rushed past. "Very few people, gladiators or not, are genuine anarchists to kill
what they believe is the king just for... kicks." He paused at the other end of the
alley, looked both ways, and hurried her across another street into an overgrown
park.
"But they must have expected the guards, why didn't they have an escape route
ready?"
"They were most likely told the guards wouldn't be a problem. Don't you see?"
He stopped and turned to face her. "They were set up to kill and to die." He shook
her a little. "Believe it, lady! Lord Korneth doesn't care whose death he ordered,
and you will be a target if anyone noticed and recognized you. Even if no one saw
you at the parade--any gladiator found in Andor today will be marked for death. You
have to get out of the city!"
"And so do you," she answered. "You helped me get away, and someone will have
noticed--someone always notices."
"My life is already forfeit. Gods forgive me, I've been a part of this. But
they will not find my death easily achieved, and that may buy you extra time to
escape--"
"If you want to make amends for whatever it is you've done, better to help FIX
things than just throw your life away," Orchid argued. She glanced around, orienting
herself. "Fratsfa's THAT way." She set out, keeping a firm grip on her companion's
arm. "Come ON."
     "Lady--"
"Don't waste time and breath arguing," she said. "Just come ON. When we get
out of the city, THEN we can argue."

West of Fratsfa:

Elosjon glanced over his shoulder as they left the deserted buildings of
Mountain Home behind them. He had been thrilled when a well-known, deeply respected
magician like Fandil of Ardivent had invited him to help, but the idea of facing a
demonic 'watchdog' chilled him to the bone. He was not skilled enough to deal with
demons, and he knew it. He just didn't want to have to admit it to a master of his
profession. He took a deep breath, coughed at the bite of sulfur in the air, and
squared his shoulders. He would do his best. Surely an experienced magician like
Fandil would understand that his best was all he could do.
But he hoped they wouldn't meet that demonic watchdog.
His mind was so fixed on what he hoped that he didn't notice where he was going
and ran full into Fandil. The old magician was standing in the middle of the
overgrown road, immobile as a tree, staring up the mountain. Elosjon followed the
direction of his gaze.
Fandil was looking at the castle on the ridge above what had been the town.
Studying it. Okay. Elosjon studied it, too. He had only seen it once before, a
long time ago, when he was a kid--well, that might not seem long to someone like
Fandil, but it was a long time ago to him. He didn't remember it clearly. At least,
he didn't remember it looking quite like this. He frowned, trying to figure out what
was different... or wrong. It was a fairly standard Medieval Frafrejan castle.
Central keep, enclosing wall with a lot of pointy little towers along it.... Wasn't
that wall leaning outward a little too much? It looked like a stone wave about to
break over their heads. In fact, for a structure that was at least half a mile away
horizontally, maybe a little farther vertically, it seemed to be looming very much
over their heads. Enough that it would be no surprise if it blocked out the sun.
That had to be a magical effect, didn't it? Even though he'd never heard of one like
that.
"Our enemy is powerful, and heedless of normal safety," Fandil said. His voice
was quiet. "That heedlessness makes him doubly dangerous. And it is crucial that he
be destroyed, or he will destroy not only us, not only the Andorian League, but a
goodly portion of this whole area." The old mage's voice hardened. "He is dabbling
on the edges of Chaos magic."
Elosjon paled. He had traveled some in Alastari as part of his education in
magic, had seen the Smoking Plain near Delarq Tor that was all that remained of a
fertile and populous countryside that had been hit with a blast of Chaos magic five
hundred years ago during the last Chaos War. And he had heard of the Twisted Lands
farther south, where the Chaos War of three and a half millennia ago had centered.
And now someone would do it here? "No! We can't allow that--anything we can do, I
would give my life if that would stop him--" He started up the road to the castle.
Fandil caught his arm. "You may end up doing that, and I may also, but we will
not succeed by rushing straight ahead. This calls for planning and finesse."

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

It's time to part, my friends! I enjoyed my days here, but higher hopes were on me,
so I didn't receive immortality with a light heart. My manager is not used to give
the numbers of his warriors, but he wanted me to shout this warning from the throne:
never waste a 21/21 WT/DF on a Striker!! Good luck to all, and to Toker, who has a
hard time runnning this contest.

Irminsul.

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon FRATSFA, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! The boys at THE UNDEAD II left the arena dejected,
after being kicked out of the top spot by OTTO'S PARTS. Good show! What's a move up
by 5 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to
PYROMANIA. Practice pays for FAT LIP, who pummelled ZOUM LA BOUSE, to pocket 19
points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after
losing 15 points to FAT LIP. (Discrete enough, ZOUM LA BOUSE?) Well, Duelmaster
IRMINSUL Bloodfeuded THE ORDER's LANKUS. Is a 14-5-1 good enough? LANKUS found out
that FRATSFA isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here!
Word has it one team in FRATSFA is taking speech lessons to try to bore their
opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
So much to report, so little time! Perhaps the warriors of BLOOD AND GUTS!
should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... The warriors of
BLOOD AND GUTS! found their efforts at combat frustrated as FLOWER GIRLS apparently
had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes,
and SAVAGE SNOWBALL is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't FLOWER GIRLS
proud! Place your bets! NOT SO HOT is the long shot of the week: they challenged
NUMBSKULL, up by 43. NUMBSKULL had a quite go of it, putting NOT SO HOT in his
place. Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy!
TORTURING TULIP will face BRAIN TUMOUR, up by 46. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat.
It's not whether you win or lose, but how many points you get (9). Right, TORTURING
TULIP?
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Citizens of
FRATSFA, be sure to settle your debts with HATED MAN of BLEAKER LEGION. He's
relocating to the Dark Arena and has other things on his mind! The manager at
BLEAKER LEGION must have some new strategy for sending HATED MAN, a warrior with
8-3-1, to the Dark Arena. Watch this space! Q: What's a record like 6-5-0 get you?
A: A free trip to the Dark Arena! This week's winner: WASTED YOUTH of BLEAKER
LEGION! Like a tattered, worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot,
SLOTHFUL of BLEAKER LEGION has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Those who owe
MAN OVERBOARD of SEA DOGS money and had written him off, take note: he'S BACK FROM
THE DARK ARENA!!! AND he'S MAD!!! Alas, poor LANKUS. We all know THE ORDER's
retirement plan isn't the best in the world. IRMINSUL, may you be as missed when
your time comes. Death in the arena! In a cheap quest for a cheap victory, IRMINSUL
faced LANKUS in an uneven fight. THE ORDER, we expect bloody revenge! Oh hard!
that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Do not think spyreporting in FRATSFA is the highlight of my life. My fingers
tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable
character. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for FRATSFA?
On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Congratulations to Irminsul, Duelmaster and Lord protector. Salute. Is it okay if
we say, "We're glad to see you go"? -- Lady Fern and The Flower Girls

Mr. Honest Merchant -- Thank you for being so honest and nice. Be sure to come and
visit me again (Or is it the reverse of that? Giggle.) at The Flower Shoppe. --
Caustic Crocus

The Order, Jasker -- No way! NO WAY! I am so sorry. I didn't really think I could
win that challenge, much less kill Jasker. Oh, my. Killing is not our thing, and I
am so sorry. Mea culpa. Mea culpa. Mea maxima culpa. -- Savage Snowball

The Order -- On behalf of all Flower Girls, I apologize. May Jasker fight well in
That Great arena In The Sky. -- Lady fern

Not So Hot -- Well, I think you are Hot! Didn't we have a great time wrestling in
the sands. I love that BIG weapon of yours! I like it not so hot--sorta slow and
easy. You were great! -- Outcast Orchid

Pulled Hamstring -- That certainly didn't slow you up, you Studmuffun! -- Torturing
Tulip

Astrianna -- I appreciated the challenge, of course. It is nice to know someone
wants and needs me. Let's try that again over at The Flower Shoppe, where we can
stretch out and really go at it! Girls just wanna have fun! -- Gloating Gardenia

Pyromania and Marmaduke -- WELCOME HOME! We shall be expecting your lusty visits to
The Flower shoppe. -- Lady Fern and The Flower girls

All -- Parrot Tamer will be sorely missed, as trip 17 PRs don't come along every day.
Since he was the scout, I must declare a replacement. My new warrior, Stabby Joe,
will be the Scout for the Sea Dogs. I hope he lasts longer than those who preceded
him. -- One Armed Bandit

Novercaphobia is quite frightening... avoid! -- Zoum, splinted into small pieces.

Hated Man... lucky for me?? You mean you could have won, and aimed for the head? It
is not what you did? -- The Ghost of Whirling Zone.

All -- Well, I have fallen out with my financier once again. Perhaps permanently
this time. As a result I must bid you all, from fair Lady to fell Minion, adieu. It
was fun and was getting funner, but all good things must end. See you on the other
side. -- The Expatriate

All -- While my team mourns the loss of our beloved Jasker, I have no choice but to
declare Lankus as our Scout. -- Torak

Outcast Orchid -- I most definately lived up to my name that fight. -- N.S.H.

Fat Lip -- The encounter was quick, but the learns were nice! -- Flame Thrower

Hated Man -- I might just hate you... Till we meet again. -- 451 Degrees

Runny Nose -- You pulled that fight out of your...Nose! -- Hellfire

Mappo -- Solid first effort for the both of us. -- Hot Stuff

All -- I hereby declare Pyromania has entered the race! Flame Thrower shall be my
scout, and 451 Degrees will be my Champion! See you on the sands... -- Pyromania

Lord Protector Irminsul -- Congratulations! All of us here on the arena staff are
pleased with your advancement. However, I am sure you realize that we on the arena
staff are just ordinary people, unprovided with "lands" or even the wherewithal to
make expensive gifts to graduating gladiators. We can, however, offer you a going
away party at the Sun In Splendor Inn. And a cake with your name on it, even!
Hoping this will be acceptable to you, I remain Tifali Metishin, Secretary to
Arenamaster Lathron.
P.S. I think that's the right form of signature?

Please note that the arena number should be on your personals and spotlights
when they are sent physically. Team name alone is not enough to insure that the
material ends up in the correct newsletter! -- the Editor

26 August 09
There has been a run lately of personals and columns turning up in the wrong
arenas. When you email in something, check and make sure you have the correct
arena number! It's easy for a finger to slip onto the wrong key. When the
receipt comes back, check again to be sure it went where you intended!
Vigilance is your friend, and mine too. -- the Editor

                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

It was an eerily familiar stroll made hundreds of times in his past, however
this stroll was different.... It was his first in roughly 15 years. With the arena
sands getting further away with each step, he approached the saloon near the center
of town. Flanked on either side are two of his ADM stalwarts Nay Palm and White
Flame who made their name in this town quite some time ago during simpler times....
Albeit a time when many more people graced the city ranks.
Swinging the doors open, he peers into the dimly lit watering hole and
everything appears as it was in his mind's eye. He takes a moment, then deliberately
strolls to a booth in the rear corner and gets comfortable. Suddenly a grin passes
across his face and he looks under the table. Scratched deeply into the underside of
the hickory colored wooden table in large letters he sees "Marma Duke -- The Great
Dane of Pain." His grin widens.
"Some things never change my friends." As his two warriors nod in agreement.
"My loyal friends, this new batch of recruits... tell me, what do they look
like? Do you think they're ready to do battle on these sands and add to the legacy
of Pyromania?"
"Aye," says Nay Palm. "I've schooled them in the finer arts of parry and
defense to the best of my ability. They've learned to anticipate where the attack
will come from, how to counter, and how to stay safe... if there is such a thing."
White Flame agrees. "I, too, have taken them under my wing and shown them the
finer arts of attack. They're fast, they're intelligent, they're willing, and I
believe they are ready. They know how to identify the weakest points in their
opponent and exploit it to their advantage."
"Well done, well done I say. I trust from your glowing report this will be yet
another banner season for Pyromania. Let's drink to the red sands, the roars of the
Fratsfan crowd, and to victory! For it is good to be home...."

Elosjon hesitated, on the brink of rushing forward, and looked at Fandil. "I'm
willing to do..." he swallowed, "anything to stop the--" He swallowed again. "Even
dying, if that will prevent someone from loosing Chaos Magic here."
Fandil nodded. "I expected no less from you."
Elosjon wasn't sure if that was good or bad. Did it mean the old mage thought
him noble-spirited, or a fool, or both, or...?
"But rushing forward blindly will not defeat this enemy. We must plan a
little." He squinted up at the looming castle again. "Though we may have little
time for it. If the magician is at all alert, he will have noticed us, and even if
he has not, his watchdog will."
The demonic watchdog. Elosjon shivered and glanced around quickly. Would they
smell it when the monster approached, or had they gotten used to smelling the sulfur
now and wouldn't notice until it was too late? "Maybe we should get out of sight,"
he suggested.
Fandil shrugged and looked up at the sky. "I suppose we might as well; it looks
like rain. But it won't make any difference to our enemy--he will see us wherever we
are once we extend our powers." He turned and moved toward the trees that grew along
the base of the near-vertical slope.
     "Not into the town?"
"There is no security for us in the watchdog's lair."
"Oh... right." Elosjon hurried to keep up with his mentor, panting. It was
disconcerting sometimes that the old man could move so quickly and keep going for so
long. He himself, though young enough to be at least Fandil's grandson and maybe
great-grandson, was exhausted, and he was too tired to care who knew it.
How could the trees be that far away? Were they ever going to reach them? No,
no, that was just tiredness. Elosjon sneaked a look at the sky, where the clouds
were getting blacker and lower. And tripped, almost going down flat except that
Fandil caught him and dragged him onward. Into shelter just as the rain began to
come down. Elosjon was breathing hard, he had a pain in his side, and sweat was
running down his face and body; he wrapped his arms around a tree in order to stay
upright. If this was the kind of thing that senior mages had to be ready for, then
he needed a lot more training.
     "Good!"
Elosjon raised his head away from the tree to look at Fandil. The old mage was
watching the rain coming down and seemed pleased by it. "Why?"
"There are dangerous creatures that like being out in rain storms," Fandil said,
"but they aren't sulfur-smelling demonic watchdogs. One thing we don't have to worry
about. Of course, our Enemy may have some wet-weather watchdog, too!"
Elosjon groaned. "I don't want to know." Fandil laughed at that, actually
laughed! If it didn't take so much energy, the young man would have considered that
insulting. No, of course not. Fandil wouldn't insult him. He pulled himself
together. "Now what?"
"Now we make a plan. I suppose you don't know anything about the castle, or any
more about the magician there except that he's probably the son of the last lord of
Mountain Home and went somewhere far away to study?"
     Elosjon shook his head.
"Not a problem, we can work with what we've got already," Fandil said, patting
his shoulder. "And really, the hint of Chaos Magic is enough." The old mage's face
set grimly and suddenly looked a lot older than seemed possible. "He's been studying
Folstrom materials, even if he didn't find the Folstrom themselves to study with."
Folstrom! Elosjon shuddered. The Folstrom, who had nearly destroyed Alastari
once--with Chaos Magic--were the monsters who lurked at the back of every
Alastarian's mind, the ultimate image of evil and depravity, never to be forgiven.
How could anyone seek out their learning? He asked the question aloud.
"Some people would go into the very heart of wickedness in search of power, and
vengeance is a strong motive, too," Fandil said. He sighed and sat down on a tree
root. "He will not be easy to defeat, but we have learned a few things since the
Folstrom were driven away. Sit down, boy, so I don't have to strain my neck talking
to you. I am going to tell you spells that you will never, on pain of worse than
death, repeat, nor even use if it isn't the most desperate last chance."
"Why?" Elosjon slid down to sit beside him. "Why keep them secret, why not use
them, why tell me at all?"
"Because these spells are as dangerous in their way as Chaos Magic, because
there is a good chance that using them will destroy you, and because someone has to
know them and be ready to use them as the final reserve. This is a battle to death
and beyond, young man, and we must make what preparations we can."

Andor:

Outcast Orchid got her companion out of the city mostly by dragging him along.
He kept protesting that he wasn't worth her efforts and could buy her time to escape
with his life, but she didn't listen. Men and their Heroic Gestures! It was clear
that whatever this fellow had done in the past, he had a good heart. He'd saved her
before she even realized she was in danger, and Orchid was honest enough to admit
that left to herself, she might not have gotten away from the parade route in time.
Furthermore, if he had been involved with setting up this false king at the
beginning, then he knew stuff that might help defeat the usurpers. Lady Fern would
know what questions to ask him.
Orchid didn't relax until they were past the outer circle of estates around
Andor. It was too bad the city didn't have a wall, that made it so much easier to
tell when you were away from it. Here, even though there were no more mansions, the
roadside was peppered with smaller houses and big vegetable gardens and orchards
and.... She shook her head. So maybe they were clear of the city and maybe they
weren't. Would the people in charge of the palace and the government be watching the
roads?
Drumming hooves behind them. Orchid had a guilty feeling that she had almost
summoned them by just thinking about--
Her companion seized her arm and dragged her off the road and through the ditch
beside it, pulling her down behind a bank of reeds. She did not need his sign to
keep silent.
Half a dozen horsemen in the palace livery. One looked like a nobleman, one a
clerk with a bundle of scrolls clutched against his chest and an uneasy seat on his
mount. The other four were soldiers, no mistaking that.
When the horsemen were out of sight, Orchid began to get up. It was wet in the
ditch, and not exactly warm, and there were mosquitoes or something.
Her companion shook his head and pulled her back down, gesturing toward the city
again. Puzzled, she looked along the road, saw nothing, and then back at him. He
gestured for her to wait. She sighed (quietly) and waited. Five minutes. Ten. A
vague sort of sound, not hoofbeats or anything so definite, but coming from the city
along the road.
Presently something came into sight. At first glance it might be taken for a
man on a horse, but it wasn't a man and it wasn't a horse. Orchid groped for
concepts that would allow her to see it, but the thing was so alien that her eyes
kept sliding away. She couldn't call it anything but a monster, and knew the word
was inadequate. And that if she had stood earlier when she'd wanted to, it would
have seen her. And... eaten her or whatever things like that did.
It made snuffling sounds. Could it smell them in the ditch? She risked a
glance at her companion. He was tense but not alarmed. Maybe it wouldn't smell
them, then.
It passed out of sight to the south in the wake of the earlier group.
"I know back roads," her companion whispered in her ear. "I think we will be
safe if we take them. No telling how many more patrols will come along here."
Orchid nodded. Her neck felt stiff. "What was... that?"
He shrugged. "Who knows? Some kind of Chaos creature." He paused for a
moment, and she saw that he was blushing. "I guess you might as well know my name.
I'm Herlas, originally from Zensu. Magician."
She caught his hand and shook it. "Outcast Orchid, gladiator from Fratsfa. Now
let's go."

Fratsfa:

There were people standing around the portal, Sizzling Sunflower supposed they
could be called guards, though they weren't very militant looking.
Beside her, Lenpro said, "Armed but not alert--they won't be able to stop us
except by the freakiest chance. Straight on through, girl, and no hesitation."
     "What if we get separated?"
     "You keep going."
     "But--"
     "You keep going, girl."
"Knowledge of this place, this pocket dimension, is this going to make a big
difference back in the real world?"
"By itself, probably not. But that it could exist at all, yes, that's
important. I don't know what it means--that'll be for my brother Fandil to figure
out--but I know it's important."
"So we have to get out and tell him. Okay." She touched her sword and looked
at the people around the Gate. Three mancats, two others more ordinary looking.
"Not a problem."

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, warriors of FRATSFA! Once again I've been called out of retirement
for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Biff! Pow! FRATSFA watched with
glee as OTTO'S PARTS got knocked off top spot by FLOWER GIRLS! Some people say I
ramble too much, I don't say anything relevant. I repeat myself. I ramble. Well
FLOWER GIRLS moved up 1, to 1st. What a role model for FRATSFA's young 'uns!
NUMBSKULL becomes Duelmaster, but don't bother to fight no more! I'm sure FRATSFA is
excited about NOVERCAPHOBIA, the new Duelmaster from WATCH OUT!. (remember?) But
when you've seen as many as I have... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and
dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. FRATSFA thinks PYROMANIA and
their 89-87-4 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up... Management
must be dealin', as the boys at WATCH OUT! ain't reelin'! PYROMANIA's mad! How well
I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, BRAIN TUMOUR! Don't make
idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. SINISTROPHOBIA didn't quite know what
to make of a challenge he received from FAT LIP of OTTO'S PARTS, who is 19 points
below him. FAT LIP perhaps got its just desserts, seeing as it won victory over
SINISTROPHOBIA and ended up with 87 recognition points.
Warriors of FRATSFA unite. You have only your games to lose! Many a warrior
has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
FRATSFA is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places.
Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. Until next time,--
Olaf Modeen

Well, surely the acrobatics afterwards made up for it? Thanks for letting me finish
on top. That's my favorite position. (wink) -- Savage Snowball

Pulled Hamstring -- I hope you are okay. After all, I enjoy our "close encounters."
I tried to be careful of your leg, but you seem to get carried away. (Tee Hee)
Never forget me. -- Outcast Orchid

Runny Nose -- That isn't all about you which is runny! (chuckle) Beating you is
soooooo much fun. (wink) -- Caustic Crocus

Jolly Roger -- Ho, ho, ho. With that big weapon of yours, you really know how to
treat a gal, don't you? -- Gloating Gardenia (with a bump and grind)

Only Crip could have a Numbskull for DM, but we salute him anyway. -- Lady Fern and
The Flower girls

Nice point turn, Sea Dogs, you dogs! Now bring all that energy to The Flower Shoppe
and party on! Bring a credit card, please. -- Lady Fern

     Not cash?

Torak -- Nice spot. Quite orderly. We send kudos your way. -- The Flower Girls
P.S. We WANT your body. Come on over to The Flower Shoppe to celebrate and you will
have the time of your life.

OAB -- Sorry about your loss of the Triplett. Good luck to you. -- Lady Fern

The Expatriate -- Sorry to see you go. We wish you well. -- Lady Fern and The Flower
Girls

It's becoming harder each turn... -- Le Pentarque.

I was avoiding Fat Lip but I must say that the challenge with only an offhand weapon
was a bold and funny move: nice victory. Would it be the contest of Crip? -- Zoum la
Bouse.

Two is my new Champion!

Impressive fight, dear hard Snowball! Did you have a smart if challenged strategy?
If not, it's even worse... -- Two

Well, I'm not here anymore, but I wanted to say hello and thanks for the Sun In
Splendor party! I won't cry for Lankus, but I was aiming for the RA... I guess my
new Battleaxe hits a little too hard... -- Irminsul.

All -- Due to the untimely death of a great warrior, we have no choice but to name
our rookie, Praecisus, as our scout. The Order's Fallen can rest in peace, knowing
that all of Fratsfa was so afraid of them, they had to be killed. -- The Order

Savage Snowball -- Rest easy, beautiful one, I understand and know how sorry you are,
but please don't take it personally when his death is avenged. -- Torak

West of Fratsfa:

Otto's Parts -- You owe me. Why, it was my challenge of Brain Tumour that allowed
The Parts a 1-2 record against The Flower Girls. You owe me big time. So your
already high bill at The Flower Shoppe will be triple for my next month's visits. I
am truly going to enjoy this! -- Torturing Tulip

Two -- Thank you for challenging me for that dance. Oh, you do not like to dance?

-- Torak

Fratsfa:

Sizzling Sunflower had said that the obstacles on the way back to the true
Fratsfa, three mancats and two more ordinary men, would not be a problem and she
meant it. After all, she was a skilled gladiator, a Lady Protector, and she had just
defeated the champion of this place, the vampire. She was confident of her prowess,
and by the way they moved, she could see that her opponents were also confident--of
HER prowess.
She smiled and moved into the attack, her blade flickering in diffused light of
this place. Five opponents at once, well, she wasn't alone, either, and though
Lenpro was, from her point of view, old, she knew he was resolute and suspected that
he had considerable skill himself. They could handle this.
Her target was the group of mancats, Aruaki, probably, who had been frozen in
mid-change. She judged them to be the most dangerous, and she was, after all, the
Lady Protector. They seemed nervous, not at all eager to close with her, which
showed more intelligence than she'd expected of them. Not that it would do them any
good.
She grinned and leaped forward suddenly, right into the nearest one. There was
a bright flash, almost blinding, but she didn't need to see to recognize the feeling
of her blade driving into flesh and bone. She wrenched it free, blinking away after-
images, and pivoted toward where the next-closest had been.
He wasn't there! As her vision cleared, she saw that he was backing away, and
the other had frankly turned and run. Well, she was going to get at least ONE more!
She bared her teeth in a snarl and stalked after the one still present and on his
feet. Saw his eyes widen in true fear as he backed faster, apparently afraid to turn
his back on her. He was blinking and squinting, too, and there was something wrong
with his shadow.
"Sunflower! Let him go--the portal is clear--"
She did a little blinking of her own, shook her head but the voice didn't go
away. Remembered finally that she had a partner here, and glanced around.
Lenpro had both his men down, one was dead, she couldn't tell about the other.
He was squinting at her.
"Let that creature go," he said. "We have more important things to do. Ah, you
might sheathe your sword...."
She looked down at the blade in her hand and realized that it was hot gold,
bright as sunlight. Reluctantly, it seemed a shame to hide that glorious light, she
slid it into the scabbard. The world here seemed a lot darker after she did. Would
it still blaze with sunlight in the ordinary world? Perhaps not, but there was only
one way to find out. She squared her shoulders and faced the portal. "Let's go,"
she said.

South of Andor:

Outcast Orchid looked at her companion. He had given his name as though it
should mean something to her, but she'd never heard of him. "Herlas of Zensu?"
"Yes, to my shame, I am."
She shook her head. "That doesn't mean a thing to me, but I can tell you that
as far as I'm concerned, saving my life makes up for a lot." She looked ahead. The
farm track they were following wandered into a field and stopped. "Where do we go
from here? How long before we can get back on the main roads? I don't like being
lost."
"We aren't lost," Herlas said. "I know where we are, and how to get to Fratsfa
from here--if the Chaos monsters haven't gotten there ahead of us." He guided her to
the left, into an overgrown woodlot. "If they have... no reason to go there at all.
Or not to, of course."
"Well, at least you aren't suggesting that we flee Andoria to escape the
monsters--"
"What would be the point? Once they've conquered Andoria, which is their goal,
I think, they will go on to the rest of Alastari, and from there the rest of Ghea."
"Lady Greywand might have something to say about that."
"Or she might not. She's insane, after all."
The woodlot was small, and on the other side of it was another overgrown track.
"How can you say that?" Orchid demanded, pulling a twig from her hair.
"Based on the available evidence," Herlas answered quietly, "but let's not go
into that now." He gestured slightly, indicating something ahead of them. "We're
about to have trouble."
Orchid looked. One of the monsters was waiting in the middle of the field. She
drew her sword, unwilling to give up without a fight. A limb of the thing
transformed into a sort of blade in response. She foresaw difficulty with an
opponent who could change forms at will.
Beside her, heat and flickering lights and a smell of ozone as her companion
cast a spell. Herlas said, "I think I can hold it to one shape, but be quick."
She nodded and danced forward, her sword beginning to trace the dangerous
patterns of her style. Sunlight flared along the edge of the blade, clean as
morning, and the monster shied back. She whirled past it, moving constantly without
pause, slicing and dicing methodically. Ichor flowed thickly.
It made a sound. Why should a Chaos monster that looked a little bit like a
person on a horse make a sound like wind chimes and sea gulls? Well, why not, it was
chaos, right? Anything goes, that's what chaos was all about. Except that she got
the feeling it was upset. Good! It should BE upset. Coming here and trying to take
over HER world--the very idea! She spun back twoard it, she had a second sword now
in her other hand, didn't know where she'd gotten it, but that didn't matter. She
hit it like a veritable wall of blades, and every gobbet of flesh she hacked off
burst into flames before it could hit the ground and was destroyed.
     Destroyed utterly.

                                      SPY REPORT

If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
FRATSFA brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, FLOWER GIRLS, since
BLOOD AND GUTS! took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this
keeps up, OTTO'S PARTS, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4
in the rankings? BLOOD AND GUTS! turned their 5-0-1 turn into a 1st place rank in
the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of
course, we're all terribly impressed to see JOLLY ROGER win a fight and gain 21
points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, JOLLY ROGER beat TORTURING TULIP and TORTURING TULIP
lost 16 points. You're breakin' my heart. OUTCAST ORCHID challenged FRATSFA's
Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And if variety is the spice of life, FRATSFA
may be getting bland, as NOVERCAPHOBIA stays top dog in the city. The Victory
Tavern, humph! I've tasted better ale at mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff?
From FRATSFA's trash dumps?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. OTTO'S PARTS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like FLOWER GIRLS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be
losers, if you ask me. Hmph. MELOPHOBIA was challenged more times this turn than
the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. Whoa! I'll even buy GROUIK a drink
tonight! Anyone who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on his good
side! Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see ANASTRIANNA and
THE ORDER at The Victory Tavern tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over
SAVAGE SNOWBALL. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches
up with you sooner that later?
What does the FRATSFA arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad
to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens
