TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The Order was founded by me, Torak. I was a young manager who had great
ambitions and dreams. I started out with a team that I called the "Dark Dragons." I
had such high hopes for that team, but that which was my dream was taken from me in
my travels between arenas. My whole team was slaughtered. I thought that I was
dead, and I guess, so did my assailant.
I was found later by a beautiful, yet fierce-looking, woman who called herself
Anastrianna. She nursed me back to health, and along with the aid of her cousin,
Jasker, I was able to find myself again. Both of these individuals are fierce
warriors who lost their families to raids. I don't know what they saw in me, but it
convinced them to leave their home to help me build another team.
Along my travels, I met a couple of very respectable people: Tokec of the
Silver Knights, and the Expatriot of the Bleak Legion. I learned a great deal from
these two men. They gave me the courage and guidance I needed to continue on.
Another very respectable person that I have to visit each time I come to Fratsfa is
the very lovely Lady Fern. The Flower Shoppe is definitely on my favorites list.
With the cousins, Anastrianna and Jasker, I journeyed on; later adding Lankus
and Krull to the roster. We met a part-time member named Kozak, who proved to be
just that: part-time. Making my way back to the great Fratsfa arena, I learned of
the chaos that is rocking the world of Alastari. I was both angered and amazed at
everything that was going on.
I decided that, with the help of my team, I was going to try to bring order to a
world full of chaos. In this quest, I have named Jasker as my scout and Anastrianna
as my champion. After much arguing over what we would call ourselves and many weeks
of healing, it was the lovely Anastrianna who simply said, "Order." After looking
dumbfounded for a moment, I smiled. Since then, we were simply that, The Order, and
we will bring that to the world.

Fratsfa, more or less:
"We have to get out of here now," Lenpro said, urging Sizzling Sunflower toward
the gate of this arena. "Even if we can't find the portal to take us back to the
true Fratsfa--"
"Will they let us go?" the Lady Protector asked. She glanced to the side and
saw that Lenpro had his own sword out. Oddly, she'd never thought of him as being a
warrior--he was so old! But he managed gladiators, trained them, and he'd lived a
long time in a world where violence was not uncommon.
"Can they stop us, except by magic?" the manager asked. "And I have a feeling
their half-demon mage will be busy trying to keep control of things now that you've
beaten his--I think the vampire was his enforcer."
"I don't know for certain that the vampire's dead," Sunflower warned. "They're
tricky to kill."
"Doesn't matter," the manager said, steering her to her right. They hurried
down another street, not running, because if you ran, there was always something or
someone who would automatically give chase. "Even if it isn't dead, or what passes
for dead among vampires, it was hurt and won't be up to giving us trouble before we
can get out of here." He swerved to the left into an alley, and she followed.
"Do you know where we're going?" Sunflower asked. "Not that I care much at the
moment, as long as it's 'away'."
"I've got a good idea which way the Portal lies," Lenpro said. "Fandil is the
magician in the family, but there are other kinds of skills."
"If you can find and open the Portal back to Fratsfa--"
"I can find it," Lenpro said. "I'm nearly certain I can find it. But opening
it might present problems. Unless there's someone on hand who can be coerced. I do
coercion from time to time."
"Good. So do I."
They turned another corner, and Lenpro pointed ahead. An archway of mismatched
stones straddled the way ahead of them, framing grayness. "There's our portal," he
said.
Andor:
Outcast Orchid stared back toward the avenue and the slaughter of the "king" by
out-of-work gladiators. "I don't believe it! Those gladiators were waiting to kill
the king--the golem they thought was the king. How could they do such a thing?"
"You saw how," the man beside her said.
"Yes, but--"
"Gladiators come all kinds, just like ordinary people," he went on. "Some good,
some bad, and a lot of them on the fence. And this hasn't been a good town for a
gladiator since the arena closed. They were probably so glad to have a job that they
didn't look into it closely."
"You're saying someone paid them to--?"
"Of course." He steered her into an alley just before a troop of mounted guards
rushed past. "Very few people, gladiators or not, are genuine anarchists to kill
what they believe is the king just for... kicks." He paused at the other end of the
alley, looked both ways, and hurried her across another street into an overgrown
park.
"But they must have expected the guards, why didn't they have an escape route
ready?"
"They were most likely told the guards wouldn't be a problem. Don't you see?"
He stopped and turned to face her. "They were set up to kill and to die." He shook
her a little. "Believe it, lady! Lord Korneth doesn't care whose death he ordered,
and you will be a target if anyone noticed and recognized you. Even if no one saw
you at the parade--any gladiator found in Andor today will be marked for death. You
have to get out of the city!"
"And so do you," she answered. "You helped me get away, and someone will have
noticed--someone always notices."
"My life is already forfeit. Gods forgive me, I've been a part of this. But
they will not find my death easily achieved, and that may buy you extra time to
escape--"
"If you want to make amends for whatever it is you've done, better to help FIX
things than just throw your life away," Orchid argued. She glanced around, orienting
herself. "Fratsfa's THAT way." She set out, keeping a firm grip on her companion's
arm. "Come ON."
"Lady--"
"Don't waste time and breath arguing," she said. "Just come ON. When we get
out of the city, THEN we can argue."
West of Fratsfa:
Elosjon glanced over his shoulder as they left the deserted buildings of
Mountain Home behind them. He had been thrilled when a well-known, deeply respected
magician like Fandil of Ardivent had invited him to help, but the idea of facing a
demonic 'watchdog' chilled him to the bone. He was not skilled enough to deal with
demons, and he knew it. He just didn't want to have to admit it to a master of his
profession. He took a deep breath, coughed at the bite of sulfur in the air, and
squared his shoulders. He would do his best. Surely an experienced magician like
Fandil would understand that his best was all he could do.
But he hoped they wouldn't meet that demonic watchdog.
His mind was so fixed on what he hoped that he didn't notice where he was going
and ran full into Fandil. The old magician was standing in the middle of the
overgrown road, immobile as a tree, staring up the mountain. Elosjon followed the
direction of his gaze.
Fandil was looking at the castle on the ridge above what had been the town.
Studying it. Okay. Elosjon studied it, too. He had only seen it once before, a
long time ago, when he was a kid--well, that might not seem long to someone like
Fandil, but it was a long time ago to him. He didn't remember it clearly. At least,
he didn't remember it looking quite like this. He frowned, trying to figure out what
was different... or wrong. It was a fairly standard Medieval Frafrejan castle.
Central keep, enclosing wall with a lot of pointy little towers along it.... Wasn't
that wall leaning outward a little too much? It looked like a stone wave about to
break over their heads. In fact, for a structure that was at least half a mile away
horizontally, maybe a little farther vertically, it seemed to be looming very much
over their heads. Enough that it would be no surprise if it blocked out the sun.
That had to be a magical effect, didn't it? Even though he'd never heard of one like
that.
"Our enemy is powerful, and heedless of normal safety," Fandil said. His voice
was quiet. "That heedlessness makes him doubly dangerous. And it is crucial that he
be destroyed, or he will destroy not only us, not only the Andorian League, but a
goodly portion of this whole area." The old mage's voice hardened. "He is dabbling
on the edges of Chaos magic."
Elosjon paled. He had traveled some in Alastari as part of his education in
magic, had seen the Smoking Plain near Delarq Tor that was all that remained of a
fertile and populous countryside that had been hit with a blast of Chaos magic five
hundred years ago during the last Chaos War. And he had heard of the Twisted Lands
farther south, where the Chaos War of three and a half millennia ago had centered.
And now someone would do it here? "No! We can't allow that--anything we can do, I
would give my life if that would stop him--" He started up the road to the castle.
Fandil caught his arm. "You may end up doing that, and I may also, but we will
not succeed by rushing straight ahead. This calls for planning and finesse."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It's time to part, my friends! I enjoyed my days here, but higher hopes were on me,
so I didn't receive immortality with a light heart. My manager is not used to give
the numbers of his warriors, but he wanted me to shout this warning from the throne:
never waste a 21/21 WT/DF on a Striker!! Good luck to all, and to Toker, who has a
hard time runnning this contest.
Irminsul.
SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon FRATSFA, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! The boys at THE UNDEAD II left the arena dejected,
after being kicked out of the top spot by OTTO'S PARTS. Good show! What's a move up
by 5 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to
PYROMANIA. Practice pays for FAT LIP, who pummelled ZOUM LA BOUSE, to pocket 19
points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after
losing 15 points to FAT LIP. (Discrete enough, ZOUM LA BOUSE?) Well, Duelmaster
IRMINSUL Bloodfeuded THE ORDER's LANKUS. Is a 14-5-1 good enough? LANKUS found out
that FRATSFA isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here!
Word has it one team in FRATSFA is taking speech lessons to try to bore their
opponent to death. I'll bet it works.
So much to report, so little time! Perhaps the warriors of BLOOD AND GUTS!
should take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... The warriors of
BLOOD AND GUTS! found their efforts at combat frustrated as FLOWER GIRLS apparently
had more important things to do than fight. Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes,
and SAVAGE SNOWBALL is it right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't FLOWER GIRLS
proud! Place your bets! NOT SO HOT is the long shot of the week: they challenged
NUMBSKULL, up by 43. NUMBSKULL had a quite go of it, putting NOT SO HOT in his
place. Call 'im brash! Call 'im brassy! Call 'im brave! Call 'im sassy!
TORTURING TULIP will face BRAIN TUMOUR, up by 46. Aaaah, just call 'im dead meat.
It's not whether you win or lose, but how many points you get (9). Right, TORTURING
TULIP?
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Citizens of
FRATSFA, be sure to settle your debts with HATED MAN of BLEAKER LEGION. He's
relocating to the Dark Arena and has other things on his mind! The manager at
BLEAKER LEGION must have some new strategy for sending HATED MAN, a warrior with
8-3-1, to the Dark Arena. Watch this space! Q: What's a record like 6-5-0 get you?
A: A free trip to the Dark Arena! This week's winner: WASTED YOUTH of BLEAKER
LEGION! Like a tattered, worn-out, faded, out-of-fashion garment cast out to rot,
SLOTHFUL of BLEAKER LEGION has been summarily sent to the Dark Arena. Those who owe
MAN OVERBOARD of SEA DOGS money and had written him off, take note: he'S BACK FROM
THE DARK ARENA!!! AND he'S MAD!!! Alas, poor LANKUS. We all know THE ORDER's
retirement plan isn't the best in the world. IRMINSUL, may you be as missed when
your time comes. Death in the arena! In a cheap quest for a cheap victory, IRMINSUL
faced LANKUS in an uneven fight. THE ORDER, we expect bloody revenge! Oh hard!
that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting!
Do not think spyreporting in FRATSFA is the highlight of my life. My fingers
tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable
character. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for FRATSFA?
On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny Vir

Outcast Orchid -- I most definately lived up to my name that fight. -- N.S.H.
Fat Lip -- The encounter was quick, but the learns were nice! -- Flame Thrower
Hated Man -- I might just hate you... Till we meet again. -- 451 Degrees
Runny Nose -- You pulled that fight out of your...Nose! -- Hellfire
Mappo -- Solid first effort for the both of us. -- Hot Stuff
All -- I hereby declare Pyromania has entered the race! Flame Thrower shall be my
scout, and 451 Degrees will be my Champion! See you on the sands... -- Pyromania
Lord Protector Irminsul -- Congratulations! All of us here on the arena staff are
pleased with your advancement. However, I am sure you realize that we on the arena
staff are just ordinary people, unprovided with "lands" or even the wherewithal to
make expensive gifts to graduating gladiators. We can, however, offer you a going
away party at the Sun In Splendor Inn. And a cake with your name on it, even!
Hoping this will be acceptable to you, I remain Tifali Metishin, Secretary to
Arenamaster Lathron.
P.S. I think that's the right form of signature?
Please note that the arena number should be on your personals and spotlights
when they are sent physically. Team name alone is not enough to insure that the
material ends up in the correct newsletter! -- the Editor

There has been a run lately of personals and columns turning up in the wrong
arenas. When you email in something, check and make sure you have the correct
arena number! It's easy for a finger to slip onto the wrong key. When the
receipt comes back, check again to be sure it went where you intended!
