Elosjon asked. "Now we make a plan," Fandil said. "I suppose you don't know anything about the castle, or any more about the magician there except that he's probably the son of the last lord of Mountain Home and went somewhere far away to study?" Elosjon shook his head. "Not a problem, we can work with what we've got already," Fandil said, patting his shoulder. "And really, the hint of Chaos Magic is enough." The old mage's face set grimly and suddenly looked a lot older than seemed possible. "He's been studying Folstrom materials, even if he didn't find the Folstrom themselves to study with." Folstrom! Elosjon shuddered. The Folstrom, who had nearly destroyed Alastari once--with Chaos Magic--were the monsters who lurked at the back of every Alastarian's mind, the ultimate image of evil and depravity, never to be forgiven. How could anyone seek out their learning? He asked the question aloud. "Some people would go into the very heart of wickedness in search of power, and vengeance is a strong motive, too," Fandil said. He sighed and sat down on a tree root. "He will not be easy to defeat, but we have learned a few things since the Folstrom were driven away. Sit down, boy, so I don't have to strain my neck talking to you. I am going to tell you spells that you will never, on pain of worse than death, repeat, nor even use if it isn't the most desperate last chance." "Why?" Elsojon slid down to sit beside him. "Why keep them secret, why not use them, why tell me at all?" "Because these spells are as dangerous in their way as Chaos Magic, because there is a good chance that using them will destroy you, and because someone has to know them and be ready to use them as the final reserve. This is a battle to death and beyond, young man, and we must make what preparations we can." The young mage took a deep breath, rubbed his suddenly-sweating hands down his robe, and nodded. "Okay." Fandil leaned closer to him, dropping his voice to a near whisper, and began to describe spells. ***** *** ***** *** ***** Elosjon blinked, wondering where the day had gone. How could it be evening already? Or maybe it was evening of the next day, or even two or three days later-- he felt stuffed with arcane knowledge, and it might have taken a long time to pour all that into him. He was afraid to move suddenly lest all that magic slosh around and confuse the spells. Or spill out uncontrolled. He couldn't say he'd LEARNED them, but he was full of them as a bottle might be full of wine. He understood Fandil's warnings now. He would rather carry live coals in his bare hands than the spells now lodged in his mind. Still, it was his job to do. Fandil, a mage with a towering reputation, was trusting him to do it. He looked at Fandil, sitting beside him. "Now what?" "Now we sleep, because darkness favors our Enemy, and we cannot give him that advantage. And because we need sleep if we are to be at our best." Fratsfa: The portal was just a portal and presented no bar to their passage. Sizzling Sunflower blinked around at the run-down section of the city to which they had returned. It seemed unexpectedly ordinary. Orderly, despite the litter. The buildings were all... square, or at least rectangular, all stone-colored, or brick. The people all human. She shook her head. "I hadn't realized that things were so conservative," she muttered. "Predictable," Lenpro agreed. "Just as well. Humans were not meant to live in chaos." "There were people back there--" She turned back toward the portal, but there was nothing to see now. Just a street, cracked pavement, grubby house-fronts, drooping trees. "People," the manager admitted, "but not humans. And I would guess not for long. That pocket universe is inherently unstable. But it may not be the only one of its kind, and I can't believe that it's good for our universe to have those clustered on it like leeches, so we'd better find my brother and tell him about it. Fandil will know what to do with a magical problem of that kind." "I guess. But it was an interesting place to visit, if you don't have to live there." She started along the street in what she figured was a westerly direction, toward the better part of the city. After a moment, she added, "There was a mob here when we went in. I kind of thought they'd wait." Lenpro glanced up at the sky. "It's late morning now, and we went through the portal in the afternoon. So it's been nearly a day, at the least. Most mobs don't have that much patience." "That long? It didn't seem more than an hour or two that we were in there!" "Some day when you have a week to spare, ask Fandil to explain 'temporal discontinuity' and 'meta-subjective time' to you. We're probably lucky--I hope we're lucky--we didn't get back BEFORE we left." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #39 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Fratsfa: Outcast Orchid looked down the hill at the jumble of buildings crowding along the river and heaved a sigh of relief. "Almost home, and I am *so* glad--I really need a bath--all this lying around in ditches to hide just isn't--" "We cannot enter the city openly," Herlas said. He sound scandalized by the very idea. "I doubt that I would be given free passage, and even if I were, you should not be seen with someone having such a dark reputation--" "Oh, pooh! *I* never heard of you, and probably most people haven't, and besides, what makes you think I care?" She squinted at him and opened her mouth to make another comment, then closed it with the observation unspoken. Maybe he did secretly enjoy his reputation as being a "bad boy of magic," but there was no need to force him to admit it. Men were silly about things like that. "I know the back- streets really well," she said. "And we're dirty enough no one will want to get close and find out more." She could see him wanting to argue and was glad when he changed his mind and just followed her. She wove through narrow streets, narrower alleys, avoiding people--who were avoiding them, so it was easy--and picking up familiar landmarks. Getting close to the Flower Shoppe. Sizzling Sunflower and the manager Lenpro came into sight, almost running, heading for the same goal. Orchid looked at her teammate and blinked. To Herlas, she said, "Does it seem to you that Sunflower is... glowing?" He hesitated. "She is certainly... radiant," he answered finally. "You mean that isn't normal for her?" "Maybe it's just the light." The two pairs came together at the back door to the complex of buildings that formed the Flower Shoppe. Orchid and Sunflower hugged each other, babbling about "amazing things to report." Lenpro looked at Herlas and raised an eyebrow, then gestured for the younger man to precede him into the building. Going first and having people with unknown intentions at his back didn't appeal, but Herlas reminded himself... well, he was sure there were extenuating circumstances, but he'd think about them later. Simply getting out of sight of the hordes of ill-wishers produced by his imagination--they were bound to show up any minute now--was good enough for now. He went in. Lady Fern hustled them into her private quarters (leaving a full house of Flower Girls crowding the nearest rooms eager for news). She pushed them into chairs, waved at a tray with bottles and glasses and plates of snacks, and sat down herself. On the edge of her chair. "What has been HAPPENING?" she demanded. "You've been gone for DAYS--" "Days? Really days?" Sunflower asked. "It didn't feel like that long--" "A pocket universe," Lenpro said. "Not particularly dangerous to Alastari in itself, so far as I can tell, but it might indicate problems to come. What if more of them form? We should probably do something about it. Where's Fandil? He'll know whether we should worry." He waved to the others for their report. "There was a golem in Andor," Orchid said, "and it was killed by gladiators, and then the gladiators were killed by a mob and it probably isn't safe to be a gladiator around there right now. And a chaos monster on the road when we were getting away." "A Lord Korneth who describes himself as being 'from Sengir', a place I have never heard of, is in control of Andor," Herlas added. "Most of the bureaucrats support him, though whether that is from conviction or to safeguard their jobs I don't know. A golem was made to look like the king--I did the illusions--supposedly to allay worry about him. No one knows exactly what happened to the king, mind you, but the people most likely to know anything at all believe that he is gone--wherever and however--for good. The later stuff, killing the golem and giving gladiators a bad name, increasing the size of the standing army, vilifying elves and Aruaki," he hesitated and shrugged. "I believe that Korneth is using all this to distract or pacify the general population while he takes complete power." "And the chaos monsters!" Orchid reminded him. "Somebody sent real chaos monsters to chase us when we left Andor. We need to tell Fandil about them, he'll know what to do." "I'm sure he will," Fern said. She looked suddenly older. "But Fandil is not here. He left days ago to track down a magician in the mountains, and we have heard nothing since Ravishing Redbud, who accompanied him part of the way, returned." In the mountains west of Fratsfa: The young mage Elosjon wiped sweat from his face. Though the morning was cold, they had been walking and climbing since first light, and that was hot work. For him, anyway; his studies had not included anything more physical than carrying a book from shelf to table or lifting a wand. Fandil seemed to be doing fine. Pride could only do so much. Elosjon gasped, "Can we stop for a few minutes?" Fandil glanced around and gestured toward an outcropping with two trees which would shield them from anyone ahead. "Surely, and next time don't wait till you're about to fall down to ask." "I wasn't sure it was okay to talk," Elosjon muttered. "I doubt that will make any difference," the older mage said, and smiled. "We aren't exactly walking silently, you know." He paused and cocked his head sideways as if listening to something he alone could hear. "I don't think anyone--the mage, at least--is paying attention. The watchdogs, though... might be different." Elosjon shivered, wishing that his imagination didn't paint those possible watchdogs in such demonic colors. SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Coming up with a solid 4-1-1 outing, PYROMANIA has advanced 3 places in the rankings. Hey everybody, watch out for TOWERING INFERNO, who flew up 21 points in the rankings after mashing TRUSTWORTHY SCRIBE like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. JOLLY ROGER was bested by PULLED HAMSTRING and drops 10 points. Try as hard as the WATCH OUT! stable might, they were unable to find their warrior (and ex-Duelmaster) PHOBOPHOBIA before this week's fights. In front of all the crowds, NUMBSKULL took the Duelmaster's crown for its own. I give the bum two weeks. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Here is other news that is of note. Did you hear that WATCH OUT! was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the personal hygiene of WATCH OUT!'s warriors, I'm not surprised! And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause OTTO'S PARTS beats feet every time WATCH OUT! smiles at them. Try farming, eh? Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, NOT SO HOT would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors.
