Elosjon shivered again. This was it. Ultimate battle, powerful enemy, no quarter. They were probably going to die. HE was probably going to die. As he stood and tried automatically to brush the dirt off his robe, he found himself thinking that it was a shame he hadn't ever visited the Flower Shoppe in Fratsfa for its primary purpose. Some magicians claimed that doing so would impair the vital forces, but others claimed it was energizing. He wished now that he had taken the time to formulate his own opinion and test it. Well, too late for that, but if he DID by some chance survive, he would-- He remembered Ravishing Redbud who had started out with them, and blushed. But if he survived, he WOULD. With her. Fandil glanced at him and said, "Remember, you are present as a back-up. Not to throw yourself into the forefront of the battle and get killed for nothing, but to hold ready for that instant when just a little extra power on my side will tip the scales." Elosjon opened his mouth to protest what he saw as coddling, but the older mage stopped him with a glance. "No, I'm not slighting your ability, my young colleague. It isn't ability that you lack, but simple experience. Some things only come with long practice, and the timing that is critical in a magical battle, or any other kind of battle, is one of them. I'm not giving you the 'easy' job, either. When your assistance is needed, it will be needed desperately, and you will have to be ready to give without hesitation or limit." The older man's beard twitched in what might have been a smile. "And if any of the watchdogs show up while I'm busy, I trust you will deal with them." Fratsfa: "What I want to know," Sunflower said, "is what this Korneth guy thinks he's going to get out of it all." "Power," Herlas said. "A crown." "Yes, but how? Even if the old king is gone for good, how does all this..." she stirred her hand around as though mixing a pot of trouble, "how does it make HIM into the new king?" "That's how a man becomes a king," Lady Fern said. "By seizing a chance when it comes along--and often enough by making the chance in the first place. He will argue that there is no one else at hand who can do what needs to be done, and point to the 'Karnhorn Menace' or some other made-up danger and say that no time can be lost, the Andorian League--" "He'll make it a kingdom, not a league," Herlas put in. She nodded. "That seems a logical step for him. That Andoria needs a strong hand on the reins now of all times. None of the other 'lesser' rulers will do: the Baron of Ardivent is too little known to the population as a whole, and he's an elf, the leaders of the Clanholds are Aruaki, the Thane of Convincia is too old, the Raltumans are out of the question since Aradi's defection--" "What about Emperor Alonj?" Orchid asked. "Easily discredited. He used to seem half-mad, though he wasn't, and many people will believe that he really is." Fern snorted. "His wife may have something to say about that, true, but Alonj doesn't want to rule Andoria, and she may not push him into something he doesn't want." "He's right about one thing," Lenpro said. "Somebody has to take control." "Why?" Herlas asked. "Why not go back to being independent units: Ardivent and Fratsfa, the Clanholds, Convincia, and Raltumas. It isn't like the League is some ancient tradition, or the separate parts will turn on each other without the framework of the League to make them work together." Lenpro and Fern spoke together: "No." Fern gestured for Lenpro to carry on with the explanation. "Only in a perfect world will people work together without rules and leaders, and this is not a perfect world. People--petty nobles, great nobles, military leaders, wealthy merchants, ambitious priests--they'll see a power vacuum and try to step in to fill it. There will be fighting, and sooner or later a union again. We should bypass that if we can: Better a bad ruler than no ruler." "Not always," Lady Fern said. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Andorian Succession #41 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + In the mountains west of Fratsfa: There was no cover beyond their resting place, just the open hillside rushing up an increasingly steep slope to the walls of the keep. Elosjon looked at it unhappily. "No chance of sneaking up any further," he muttered. "A rabbit, even a mouse, couldn't hide there," Fandil agreed. "But that may not apply to--" Suddenly there was something in front of them. Big as a bear, roughly bear- shaped, standing on the naked hillside and growling. It had impressive teeth and claws, a single eye in the center of its forehead, and it reeked of sulfur, as if anything was needed to underline its demonic origin. It advanced with stiff movements, as though walking was a new skill for it. Elosjon stared at it for several minutes, increasingly indignant. "Is this a joke?" he demanded of the world at large. "If that thing's a genuine demon, I'll--" He paused. On the off chance he was wrong, maybe he shouldn't offer to eat it if it should turn out to be a demon after all. "If that's a demon, I'll be very surprised," he said. "Good save," Fandil murmured. More loudly, he added, "It does have a 'made in haste' air about it. Which doesn't mean it isn't dangerous." "It's practically a GOLEM," the young mage said. Sparks of irritation snapped between his fingers. "True," Fandil agreed. Elosjon shot him a suspicious look. If the old man was laughing at him--! But Fandil's face was smooth and serious. "Do you know the tricks to handling golems?" he asked. Elosjon nodded. "That was an early lesson, will, dealing with simple ones was early. But yes, I know how to handle some complicated ones, too." He paused, reviewing his training; now was not the time to make statements he couldn't back up, and what if this bumbling thing was a golem of demonic origin? Or had elements of the demonic in its construction? Fandil was frowning, studying the 'bear-demon-golem'. "I don't sense anything truly demonic about this," he said finally, "and I suspect that it was made... almost carelessly, to scare away ordinary people who might happen through this area." He looked over at his companion. "I believe you can handle this." Elosjon nodded again, sharply. "Yes, I can." Sparks snapped through his fingers again, and as he brought his hands up, they formed a ball of lightning. The "bear" fixed its one eye on him and made a sound, not a roar, more of... it was almost a whine. He flexed his magical faculty as a musician might flex his fingers before a performance. The "bear" watched closely, making no move to attack or to run away. "Not much of a watchdog," Elosjon said, studying it over his ball of lightning. "Being a watchdog is not in a bear's nature," Fandil replied, "and I think this may have started with a true bear. The magician who made a bear into... this is an abomination. Death is the kindest gift you can give this creature." "Yes." He spread his hands, releasing the ball of energy without further comment. It sped toward the bear golem. Who could have avoided it, the lightning was fast but not so fast as natural lightning. Instead, the creature stood up taller and opened its arms as though to hug the deadly energy. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===ANDORIAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 8 ARKERS (turn 317): CONFIDENCE of CONSANGUINEOUS (Mannequin, mgr.) PULLED HAMSTRING of OTTO'S PARTS (Crip, mgr.) (turn 263): BEXLY of OHIO (Berylstar, mgr.) DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. What a turn for the Parts. Three Graduates from a single team in a single turn is truly a rare occurance. But what of the details of this odd collection of misaligned parts? Well, let's start with the most experienced, Brain Tumour, who started 14-17-11- 4-19-9-10, and has raised 8 stats, and now has an Advanced Expert in Parry. He preferes the Small Shield, likes a Mod/Mod rhythm (which he has never tried) with the Parry Tactic, and learns riposte techniques. His invite confirms the need for only a single Advanced Expert to graduate with 40 arena fights. Our ugliest record belongs to Pulled Hamstring, who, despite some nice stats, was just too slow to do anything. He started 15-5-8-17-17-5-17 and has never raised a stat, but was also a slow learned for his wit. This led to Masters in Attack and Inits, an Advanced Expert in Parry, and Expert in riposte. He is adept with the Longsword, likes a Mod/Very Low Rhythm, and as you can tell, learns parry skills, which also contributed to his dismal record. Finallly there's me, Numbskull, who started to excel in dead tournaments. (Well, an Inits TV, several Dead tourneys, then a Dead Challengers TV). I started as a 13-6-7-17-17-7-17, which is fairly similar to Pulled Hamstring. However, I have 8 stat raises, and a whole lot more skills, with Advanced Masters in Attack and Init, Masters in Decise and Riposte, and Experts in Parry and Defence. I'm adepts with an Epee (not used much), with a Mod/Low rhythm, and the tendency to learn Riposte (though I thought it was decise the way my learning curve shaped out). Of the group, I'll probably be the only one that gets to continue fighting beyond here. Otto's Parts Duelmaster of Fratsfa SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, FRATSFA? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see SALIENT win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. NUMBSKULL Dark Arena Challenged ARENAMASTER LATHRON for FRATSFA's Title this turn, and guess what happened? And if variety is the spice of life, FRATSFA may be getting bland, as NUMBSKULL stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. FRATSFA, I am losing what little hope I had in you. BLOOD AND GUTS! the most avoided team? What insult will suffice, I cannot say. And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was FLOWER GIRLS. Ha ha ha ha! FAT LIP was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to LOCKIOPHOBIA of WATCH OUT! for challenging up by 18 to SAVAGE SNOWBALL. LOCKIOPHOBIA won to get 50 points of recognition. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for FRATSFA's morgue. More variety. OTTO'S PARTS has cause to pause today, as NUMBSKULL was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll wager. I could say I saw this coming, but so could anyone else. Anyway, this turn it came. BRAIN TUMOUR's 27-13-0 has earned it the Dark Arena. Now hey, I like to see a death as much as the next guy, but hey OTTO'S PARTS, whyja send BRAIN TUMOUR to the Dark Arena, look at its record, huh? Whoa! I'll even buy PULLED HAMSTRING a drink tonight! Anyone who can come back from the Dark Arena, I want to be on its good side! I can't say as I'm proud to find out that BLOOD AND GUTS!'s TWO has killed DOMINION from DRAGONS GUARD II. I can say I wish DRAGONS GUARD II good luck in their bloodfeud. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? There's got to be a better place in FRATSFA to get a drink than The Victory Tavern! Any suggestions? Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather.
