A new manager! Welcome, Khisanth, may you prosper in Fratsfa! You get the +25
Greetings. Marmaduke came back from the Ftf boiling and is climbing the rankings...
Lady Fern challenged wisely, my guys also had a comforting tournament. OAB, what are
you doing? Put these guys back onboard! Crip and Paranoia? Fight until the end, or
the Flowers will grow all over you !

"So," Lenpro said, "we have two basic--linked but distinct--problems. The
chaotic magic, and the civil war. Is that correct?"
Lady Fern nodded. "Over-simplified, but correct."
"And Fandil is going to have to be the one to deal with the magic--"
"I have heard of the mage Fandil, of course," Herlas cut in, "and I would guess
he has as good a chance as any and better than most, but... will he do it? Will he
do it in TIME?"
"He's working on it now," Fern said.
The younger man blinked and looked around the room blankly. "Already? But how
did he know?"
Fern laughed. "That is a question I prefer not to ask my brother, along with
'what are you doing?'. It is sufficient to know that he is working on it." She sat
even straighter in her chair. "Your obvious intention, Lenpro, is to state that we
here in this room must begin to deal with the civil war side of the problem."
"Preferably before it becomes an outright civil war," the manager from Iaye
said. "At the moment, it's more of a palace coup. If we can stop it now--"
"Ah..." Herlas shifted a little in his chair, "that may not be possible.
Cutting it off before it becomes an outright civil war. The tensions and irritations
that Korneth has been working with are real enough, and by now they're probably--
almost certainly--inflamed enough that bringing them to a halt short of violence
is.... I don't think it can be done."
"Just what, exactly, 'tensions and irritations' are you talking about?" Lenpro
scowled. "The Andorian League is probably the best place to live in all Alastari--"
Herlas sighed, looked at Outcast Orchid almost helplessly for a moment, then
squared his shoulders. Definitely a 'you aren't going to like this' gesture.
"Korneth may have come out of nowhere I've ever heard of, but he gained local support
quickly. Very quickly--and more than you might think, especially in Convincia. The
Great Thane has been... cool, but he hasn't made any effort to stop the drift of many
of his lesser thanes into the..." a vague gesture, of one groping for words, "the
isolationist camp, I might call it. And at a lower level still, among the ordinary
people, farmers, small merchants, the foundation of Convincian strength, there's a
lot of resentment against, well, the Aruaki first. They don't like how powerful the
Aruaki are in the League. They don't like Aruaki wanting to marry their sons and
daughters and 'taint' their own family bloodlines. They just--"
"They don't like the Aruaki," Fern finished. She looked thoughtful and glanced
at Lenpro. "What has been your experience on Iaye? It is officially under the
government of the Aruaki Clanhold, is it not?"
"Officially... sort of." Lenpro got up and started walking around the room,
finding an outlet for his own irritation in the activity. With obvious reluctance,
he said, "We don't see many of the Aruaki on Iaye, and if some official were to come
and try to give orders... they probably wouldn't be well received. But that's a long
way from civil war!"
"It's the soil that a civil war can grow in," Fern said. "The werefolk are not
welcomed with open arms here in Fratsfa, either, especially since the plague. Some
of the plague-driven shape-changes and the associated personality shifts were," she
sighed, "frankly disastrous. But it isn't the fault of the Aruaki themselves!"
"It doesn't need to be," Sizzling Sunflower cut in. "It isn't the fault of the
river if someone's house gets flooded, but no intelligent person builds too close to
it even so."
"Yes, exactly so." Herlas nodded. "Even people who aren't hostile to the
Aruaki have taken to avoiding them--"
"We don't see it in the arenas," Lenpro said.
"Yes, well, they're avoiding the gladiators, too, I bet," Orchid said. "Nobody
was giving gladiators the benefit of the doubt up in Andor just recently."
"There's also hostility toward gladiators," Herlas admitted. "Many people see
them as tools of the Grey Wand, which they fear outright. And, again, they resent
the effect of the arenas on their sons and daughters. That it draws them away from
what their parents consider the proper life and duties--"
"A lot of jealousy, huh?" Orchid asked.
Herlas nodded again. "A lot of people have trouble accepting the typical elvish
lifespan, but at least elves can be killed. Add in the guarantee of resurrection...
jealousy, resentment, even religious outrage. There was a lot of dissatisfaction
that Korneth could strike a match to."
"It's all well and good to SAY these things," Orchid growled, taking her turn to
stamp up and down the room. "But what can we DO about them? The Aruaki aren't going
to go away. The arenas aren't going to go away. The elves, and the Grey Wand,
aren't going to go away. All this stuff you're SAYING isn't telling us what we can
Herlas smiled, though there was little amusement in the expression. "Korneth's
solution is to kill or 'cast out' the Aruaki--send them back to Ratan, apparently.
Get rid of the arena system, kill Lord Protectors whenever they turn up and destroy
the bodies so that they can't be resurrected, and direct the energies of the
remaining Andorians toward a war with the Karnhorn Empire."
"Scapegoats," Lady Fern said. Her expression suggested that if she wasn't a
lady, she'd spit on the floor.
"Cut off Korneth's legitimacy by providing a ruler that all can accept as--"
"But can 'all' accept Alonj?" Orchid asked.
"As an alternative to a civil war, yes, I think so. If we get the message on
that out before emotions become so inflamed that nobody wants a reasonable
alternative to civil war. But these irritations... they won't go away, because they
do have a real foundation," Lenpro nodded acknowledgement at the Zensovian mage, "but
they've become exaggerated. Inflamed," he repeated, liking the word.
"So we need anti-inflammatories." Fern nodded. "It won't be easy, but--"
"Maybe if the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors help out people, all kinds of
people--the ordinary ones you were talking about," Sunflower began.
"No." Fern and Lenpro spoke together, and immediately. Lenpro gestured for his
sister to continue. "If we add the burden of gratitude to the resentments already
festering, it will make things worse. No, better if we find some way for the
ordinary mortal human Andorians to help out the Aruaki and the Lord Protectors, that
might do better."
Sizzling Sunflower looked dubious, but she shrugged and sat back, accepting her
manager's perception as being wiser than her own. "How, then?"

In the mountains west of Fratsfa:

Lightning came down in a river of golden fire, hot and clean, and violet light
of the Folstrom's Chaos Gate turned black under the onslaught. But it didn't
shatter. Well, Fandil had hoped for the Gate to be destroyed, seared shut, but he
hadn't truly expected it to be so easy. Necessary, beyond necessary--the Folstrom
could not be allowed to return, but not easy. He squinted at the pillar of darkness
and contemplated his next move. To wait for the enemy to move and then counter, or
to attack? If it was just this one magician, he would wait, defend, allow his
opponent to tire... but if the Folstrom were involved, no, *because* the Folstrom
were involved, one look at that Chaos Gate was proof, he was not sure he dared play a
waiting game. On the other side of that Gate could be reinforcements beyond
counting, and he had only young Elosjon, competent but green still.
"Our strength is as the strength of ten, because our hearts are pure," he
muttered, but he was not convinced. Still, he would do what he could, and it would
be enough because it must.  He tested his anchorage in the bedrock of the mountain;
it was secure. Indeed, he had a momentary image of the mountain as an old woman,
strong, resolute, standing beside him as an ally with spear and shield. Perhaps a
fancy, but an encouraging one.
He spared a glance for the storm that raged above the peak, not raining yet but
building an arsenal of lightning such as Fandil had never seen. The storm was still
his, or on his side, as the mountain was. With such allies, and Elosjon's young
courage was not negligible, he could--
Lightning descended again, and the spirit of the mountain rose to meet it, and
from that startling union there burst forth a dragon such as Fandil had never seen
before. Black as the stone, golden as the sky-fire, beautiful, powerful, and deadly.
And the hatred of dragons for the Folstrom was legendary.

                                      SPY REPORT

I can't believe the violence in FRATSFA! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing
Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Like, BLOOD AND GUTS! had to be
so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by DRAGONS GUARD II! Way to go
DRAGONS GUARD II! What was the name of that team who got 4-1-0 this turn for a total
313-285-16 you ask? (Sure) OTTO'S PARTS' their name, and fighting's their game!
MVP award for HOT STUFF? PYROMANIA's proud of it after beating ANASTRIANNA and
getting 20 points. Talk about yer big time losers! TWO got smashed by JOLLY ROGER,
and lost 15 points! Like, GLOATING GARDENIA must be pretty gutsy! She challenged
the Duelmaster from PYROMANIA. Does this gal have a death wish or what! This
Duelmaster is like something else! NOT SO HOT stopped GLOATING GARDENIA dead in hers
tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They
want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. PYROMANIA was
the most avoided team. Is a 104-95-5 record really that scary? Hhmph! What kind of
warriors are FLOWER GIRLS? PYROMANIA, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't
get them to accept an invitation! Can FLOWER GIRLS' GLOATING GARDENIA be more
popular than me? She was challenged the most, but is that really the same? People
were asking me did SALIENT REALLY challenge SAVAGE SNOWBALL? (all right, maybe they
didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but SAVAGE
SNOWBALL wants me to write about it since she defeated SALIENT. Satisfied?
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All FRATSFA ever talks about is fighting!
Me, I'm more laid back. Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to
hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. FRATSFA is like such a dump, and you guys
smell too much! I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Not So Hot -- Nice DM Column, and congrats on getting to do it again! You are such a
stud! My gals want you badly over at The Flower shoppe. Don't miss your chance. --
Lady Fern

451 Degrees -- I didn't have a chance. You are just plain HOT! I like it like that.
(wink) -- Savage Snowball

Preacisus -- I just had to have more of you. That weapon of yours is soooooo cute.
Wanna go at it again at The Flower Shoppe? I just love getting my hands and
everything else on big studmuffins. I do. -- Devilish Dahlia

Onyx -- What an unlucky draw for me. Those RUGs are so mischievous. I just think I
will have to cut them off. -- Caustic crocus

     Your loss! -- RUG #879

Two -- Sometimes two is too much to me. Wild Thing, you make my heart sing. --
Torturing Tulip

Jolly Roger -- I'll take it any way I can get it. (giggle) -- Gloating Gardenia

All y'all -- What am I doing all the way up here out of my range. I'm in trouble.
Be easy on l'il ole me. -- Gloating Gardenia

Mr. Crip and all your parts -- Way to go! You got the fifth highest point total this
round just by being a no show! You rock! That little Ryan is going to be of such
value to your DM career, you know. -- Lady Fern

Nicely fought, Not So Hot... you are hot enough for me, indeed... -- Zoum la Bouse

That was great! You should have come, friends! Two, Areopolite and Champ Chump,
back on their two feet from the tournament.

Sorry, fair Tulip, I should learn the slow tortures, I keep being too fast... -- Two

Beautiful Crocus -- The Chump wants to meet you, but I'll be back too... --

Welcome, Khisanth, make that sand yours! -- Le Pentarque

9 February 10
All -- I know you all thought the old Wiz that is Fiz went off to die somewhere.
Well, I didn't. Now I'm back to befuddle and frustrate you with my senseless
ramblings. I look forward to reconnecting with all my old friends and enemies alike.
