I figured with us beating each other that more than two of you could come up with a winning record. Here are the standings thus far (mine are included just to see how I match up with you gentlemen): Manager W/L Points Master Darque 4-1-1 5 Apex 3-1-0 2 Dr. Mabuse 3-2-0 1 Dreihdenflahg 2-3-0 -1 KAT 2-3-0 -1 Firehawk 1-4-0 -3 Hammer 1-4-0 -3 Jack Wolfspider 1-4-0 -3 Slaughter Priest 1-4-0 -3 Youngblood 0-5-0 -5 Alright, that does it from here. This is going to be a cumulative stat board, so you'll get a look at how you have performed for the entire contest, not just a turn by turn basis. Your Godfather, Master Darque + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Charter Cities #87 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Morya: "Lapur remains a thorn in our side," Bey Nishtar, new ruler of Monuntial, said. "Not only do they resist absorption into the Grand Plan, but they encourage and abet the rebels that still follow the old fool Quetzal. That city must be broken and the rebels crushed. What are you going to do about it?" "It's too early for me to break openly with the other Charter Cities," Equestor Valarrian Kiyle said. "My own people would turn on me if I--" "Decimate them," Nishtar suggested. "I find that it has a very persuasive effect if you line up the entire population, men, women, and children, and kill every tenth person out of hand." "I dare not at this time!" the Moryan said. "As well hand over control of the city-state to Minzach directly." "If you can't help me over Lapur," Nishtar asked softly, "then what good are you to me, Valarrian? Why should I continue to support you and your puny efforts to forge an empire?" "I can find the men to infiltrate the Monuntialese rebel forces," Valarrian said quickly. "I have contacts in Dullens and Khalani where there are gladiators who are...displeased at the closing of the arenas. Displeased enough to believe that Lapur engineered those closings. They'll be good tools to begin the downfall of Lapur." "Perhaps," Nishtar said. "Let me see some action on this and I might be convinced to continue my support of your cause. But if there is no action SOON, Valarrian, you had better put your affairs in order and prepare your graveclothes." Monuntial: Agro and Bindi emerged from the underground room at the head of the double line of laborers who had carried the float. The men standing at the door were armed, but they seemed to have no special training in combat. Professional bullies, Agro guessed, taking out the nearest man with a quick thrust. He caught the guard's weapon as the man fell and tossed it back to one of his unarmed followers. On the other side, Bindi cut a guard's throat and danced past to menace the next one. They weren't out in the arena yet, but just entering a sort of cavernous foyer. Several hallways opened into it from under the stands, and the far wall was all open; the sunlight came from there, and the roar of the crowd. The big Croc tipped his head to the side and listened grimly for a moment. The crowd wanted to see blood and death, did they? He grinned, displaying a lot of very sharp teeth; he and his followers would oblige them--not in the way they expected. He killed two more guards before reaching the wide archway into the arena itself. He felt no remorse about them; they had chosen to support the usurpers, Quelsarrain and Nishtar, and their new, bloodier arena, so he figured they'd asked for whatever happened to them. But it meant two more of the men with him would now be armed, and that was good. Monuntial arena was built on an ancient foundation, oval and larger than arena in Lapur. Someone had mentioned once that it was an old Van arena where they had held chariot races. This entry was near the middle of one long side, and directly across, Agro saw the box seating of the wealthy, especially the fancy raised box with its gold-fringed awning where Quelsarrain sat with his personal attendants. The barrier wall around the arena was ten feet high except at that point; the Usurper sat twenty feet above the sands. Smooth marble, too, the Croc noted with displeasure; he would have liked to get up there and deliver some blood and death directly to Quelsarrain. Oh, well, another time. There were soldiers stationed around the edge who would make a good bloody show. Agro pivoted sharply and engaged the one nearest the entry arch. The rest of his group, remembering his brief instructions before they were freed from the underground holding chamber, remained close enough together to support each other as they began to fight their way around the open space. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Charter Cities #88 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Monuntial: The Usurper's guards hadn't expected their prey to come out fighting, and that moment's shock and hesitation was time they couldn't spare. 'Steal their initiative'? Agro snorted as he slaughtered the nearest guard. These fools had simply dropped it, if they'd ever had any. As gladiators, they would have been hopeless...and he decided that the closing of Monuntial's arena had benefited his side in ways nobody had expected. He and the group behind worked half-way around the arena before they met with a real challenge. The real challenge was half a dozen guardsmen who dropped down from the Usurper's box. They were armored, and they were skilled. All Agro had to pit against that was the numbers and desperate determination of his followers. The crowd loved it, probably found it a lot more exciting than lions against unarmed prey. And speaking of lions...where were they? If someone let them out, it could add a lot of confusion to the situation. Better if that didn't happen, but nothing he could do about it right now. The Usurper's men knew their business, Agro could see it in the way they looked over the situation, identified himself as the core of the problem, and started after him, ignoring all others. Then he had no more time to think about things. Thrust and parry, riposte and dodge. Slash. Duck and roll. Thrust again. Didn't dodge fast enough, but it wasn't a serious cut. Yet. These men were good. It seemed to go on and on, testing his stamina to the limit. Slash, slash, and parry. How did the guards stand it? Thrust, parry, dodge. They must be cooking in that armor. Someone shouted for him to drop flat on the count of five. It took him a few seconds to realize the command had been in Isle cant, a language born of the cross- fertilization of Fratsfan, Kannish, and Tathanit, and little known outside the gladiatorial community. Probably a friend, then. When someone yelled "FIVE" he dropped. And an explosion of...light? Fire? Some kind of blast flashed over his head, taking down anyone still standing. The Usurper's guards, the regular guards, most of his followers who were still standing. He didn't want to think about Bindi; she was still a Basic gladiator and hadn't been exposed to Isle cant.... There was a second explosion on the heels of the first, but it was dark and cold and expanded in a volume instead of a plane. Counterattack? This was a lot of magic flying around for the time and conditions. Agro recalled that someone had told him Nishtar, the Eastern ally of the Usurper, was a mage. Maybe a reckless mage, then. And it probably meant that the Usurper, or at least his ally, had survived the first blast. When the air stopped shaking, Agro raised his head and looked around cautiously. He couldn't hear anything, but that was probably because the two blasts had numbed his ears. After a look at the stands, he decided temporary deafness was a blessing. He gathered his limbs under himself and lurched to his feet. A few others down on the sands were doing likewise--one of them, he saw with relief, was Bindi. If any were guards, they'd lost their tell-tale armor. He gestured for her to go toward the exit and started in that direction himself. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 472): POSITION IS EMPTY DM 2 NIANIA (turn 358): BIG RED of BIG COUNTRY (Wally The Wacko, mgr.) TROCAR needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad, TRADERS OF TROCAR, but USELESS TOOLS was just too good to be stopped. I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but KATHOUSE really goofed with their 0-0-0. WOLFSPIDER'S GANG like really fought hard to move up to 8th from 16th. Way to go! Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, DREIHDENWALD! 'Cause they got 4-1-0 and moved up to 7th! MVP award for SEAHORSE HAMMER? FISH HAMMERZ's proud of him after beating A.O. HELL and getting 17 points. Talk about yer major upsets! JOEY ABEQ's match with MICROSOFT cost him a loss of 12 points! The Duelmaster isn't going to stop just cause she's Number One! SAGINDAN knows this. He was challenged by the Duelmaster. This Duelmaster is like something else! SEX ON THE BEACH stopped SAGINDAN dead in his tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR photos. Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? KATHOUSE was the most avoided team. Is a 2-3-0 record really that scary? I don't know what WOLFSPIDER'S GANG's been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from KATHOUSE, that's fer sher. Like, is RED EYE popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of TROCAR! He's got a 4-3-0, is that good? Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All TROCAR ever talks about is fighting! Me, I'm more laid back. Pinch me, I must be dreaming!!! SIR CASWALLAWN returns from the Dark Arena, maybe a "little upset" at his POMPOUS PALADINS teammates... What a bunch of heartless! I couldn't believe how many people were snickering when SEX ON THE BEACH killed SAGINDAN. So he had a 20-18-1, that's no excuse! That was so totally rude when SEX ON THE BEACH wasted SAGINDAN. I think all you warriors in TROCAR should gang up on INDULGENT DRINKS! Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do? Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Brilliant managerial strategy to move the Fury ahead of the Tools, but your lost cost the boss. -- Rubber Bullet Fireflash -- We've met before haven't we? -- Mousetrap Katrine -- I wanted to wrap you up and take you home, but the adhesion was gone. -- No-Stick Tape Sagindan -- I've never been known to transmit the common cold. -- Microsoft Shadowmere -- Wall of Trocar in the champs? I think you have to worry about getting there first. -- Useless Tools All -- Terrible are the Fish of Trocar! -- Hammer All -- You all a bunch a Panzies or what? Only one warrior sent to the Infirmary and ya couldn't Kill him? Where are the Fish Killers of Trocar? -- Hammer Shadowmere -- Thanks for the welcome! All -- In case anyone wants to know, no Fish are going to the F2F this summer! -- Hammer All -- Face My Fish! -- Hammer Sex on the Beach -- I can't help it, I keep worrying about the sand. - Joey Abeq Slippery Nipple -- Gotcha! -- Cerisa Fireant -- (stamp, stamp, stomp, smash) Hate those ants! -- Daroshtan That ol' Monk should've stuck to his meditations. -- Sagindan Dorsal Fin Hammer -- No way, buster brown. I've got stuff to live up to. -- Wimples Fizban -- Maybe we can call a moratorium on deaths? -- Jorja Dr. Mabuse -- (shocked look) That's illegal! -- Cerisa, Traders of Trocar and team herbalist Tarrasque -- Nothing I like better than having a good man at my side. Unfortunately, I'm told that something called "the Forth" will prevent any immediate moves. -- Sagindan P.S. But there'll be fanatics around next month, I'm sure. Gruumsh -- (panting inaudibly) I think I've almost got the hang of this astral projection stuff! Stay in one place, and I'll use you to home in on, okay? - Ghost of Wimpia Sail Phone -- Okay, so I'm an idiot. What about it? -- Warleggan All -- Hmm, looks like the gang wasn't up to the challenge last time. And flogging them just impairs their fighting abilities. I guess I'll have to offer them an extra slice of pie if they do well. -- Jack Wolfspider 30 May 2003 Duelmasters Friends and Friendly Foes -- I am returning to the United States for the summer. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse. Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207, due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals. Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10 points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion. Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being Slaughterhouse Champion awaits! More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider, russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45. 26 June 2003 All -- Would you be willing to proxy my lunger Ganglare at the Face-to-Face? He's fighting in the champions tourney. Thanks.
