There were Usurper's men in the street, but they seemed disorganized. Probably shaken and confused by the explosions, who wouldn't be? It was tempting, it would have been easy to cut down four or five of the nearest ones before they realized there was a fight going on, but he resisted. A fight would shake them out of their confusion faster than anything, and as long as they were milling uselessly asking each other what was going on, he had an edge. He needed to use it to get himself, Bindi, and these men who trusted him out of town. He picked the street with the fewest soldiers on it and set off at a run. That, he realized immediately, was a mistake. Running attracted attention, and the less attention they had, the better their chance of escape. Running attracted pursuers. He did the best he could while mentally cursing himself, waved his sword vaguely and yelled, "That way!" One of the men with him, apparently an alert, quick-thinking type, took up the yell but waved in a different direction. "No, THAT way! They're making for the forest!" Apparently "making for the forest" was a logical move, because most of the soldiers rushed off in that direction. Maybe it was logical for humans, but Agro wanted water, lots of it. Any human that came after him in the water would be in serious trouble. Agro dropped to a steady trot and grabbed the nearest of his followers. "Which way's the waterfront? Don't point." The man blinked. "Left at the next intersection, then straight all the way. You got a boat?" he asked hopefully. Agro grinned. He could pass for human most times, if you didn't look too closely, but his grin exposed a lot of very sharp teeth. The man shied back, though not as much as the Croc had expected. "Not yet, but I will have." Falling in beside the running gladiator, the man said, "All the coast along the peninsula is patrolled by the Usurper. It is possible to land there undetected, but it isn't easy." The man glanced at him sideways. "I, ah, do a little blockade running, now and then." "Then you can handle a boat, good! I can swim, never had much need of boats," the gladiator admitted. "We want the smallest boat that can take all of us--I'm not going to leave anybody behind to be questioned by the Usurper. Where's the safest place to land?" "Niatoli Island." Elsewhere in Monuntial: The Prince of Ar flattened himself against the side of a building, watching the soldiers run past on the street. There had been an explosion, and now a growing crowd roar, from the great oval structure that housed Monuntial's arena. It had been built for chariot races, and those still went on even though the gladiatorial contests had stopped. But there had been rumors of spectacles involving the gruesome deaths of 'traitors'--by which he assumed the current rulers of the city meant rebels against the regime of the Eastern mage Nishtar. That had been the subject of Ar's current researches. The free cities of this part of Alastari were at risk so long as Nishtar ruled unchecked. If there were rebels, they should be saved and aided.... But he could not talk to, or fight, a mob such as he heard now. He began to slide slowly and silently away from the street down the narrow passage between the walls of two mansions. Both were deserted, so far as he could tell, which meant he had only to fear discovery from the street. Until someone dropped into the passage behind him, landing as lightly as a cat. He risked a glance over his shoulder. Someone tall, lean, and garbed in black except for a bared sword, anonymous and deadly. "Keep your hands in plain sight," the figure said, its voice muffled and unidentifiable. "Work your way farther down this alley until you come to a door on the left. Go in there." "Why?" "For privacy. We need to talk--you have been making a nuisance of yourself with your prying." "Talk?" Ar asked skeptically. "You think that will stop me?" "We'll find out, won't we? Move now." Behind the door on the left was what had probably been a porter's room. It looked as though someone had been camping in it: there was no furniture such as the room must once have had, but he saw a bedroll in one corner, a lantern on the floor beside it, and the ashes of a very small fire on the hearth. The door closed softly behind him. The Prince of Ar turned and examined his... accoster. A woman, he saw with surprise, nearly six feet tall, and she moved like a warrior. A very accomplished warrior. "What do you want to talk about?" "How to coordinate our efforts," she said briskly. "I can tell by the places you've gone and the questions you've asked that you are the enemy of Nishtar and Quelsarrain." She smiled grimly. "And an enemy of my enemies is my friend. I am Tyrai. I used to be the Arenamistress here." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Charter Cities #93 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Monuntial, the waterfront: The man--he said his name was Tully--pointed out a boat tied at the end of one of the long piers. "That'd take us all, and I can handle it with a couple of guys to do the sails." He glanced over his shoulder at their small group. "There's some here that are good enough." Agro squinted at the boat in question and noted that it was already occupied by at least three people. "Okay. You know the men on that boat?" "Not personally," Tully said, his brows drawing down in a scowl. "But I'm looking forward to it. Those are Usurper's men. The boat used to belong to my cousin, but he 'met with an accident' and somebody claimed he left a debt behind-- Kollis that never borrowed money!--and his boat got taken for payment." "You know the boat then. Good." Agro gestured for his followers to move closer. When they were in a cluster so that all could hear him, he said, "We're going to take that boat out there. No damage to the boat if you can help it--that's our escape route. But damage the men all you want. Let's make it fast, because those soldiers are going to be behind us any minute." "Right!" A man with a squint, Agro hadn't heard his name, grinned. "We can do this, boys! Let's go." He made a sweeping gesture that must have alerted anybody watching from the boat. Before the Croc could say anything to him, the remnants of the group that had been trapped in the arena surged forward. One of the men on the boat shouted, and heads popped out of a hatch. And just to put the situation over the top, he could hear more shouts and running feet, the clashing of armor as men jostled against each other, and a horn blowing some kind of signal behind them. That would be the Usurper's soldiers. There was no time for planning or any kind of organization. Making sure that Bindi was with them and nobody lagging, Agro ran for the boat. Most of his group were ahead of him now, so he figured that made him and Bindi the rear guard. He didn't like that--what if the soldiers had bows?--but that's the way it was. There were yells from the boat, and screams, and the various sounds of combat, bludgeon sounds, and the ring of steel on steel, grunts and wordless roars of rage and destruction. Agro hoped that Tully, the man who knew how to handle the boat, was not among the ones screaming. But he didn't have time to look, because the first of the soldiers were coming into sight around the corner of a warehouse, and they DID have bows. Agro swept his teammate Bindi into the protection of a stack of bales and moved the other way to draw the soldiers off. It was a primary goal with him that Bindi not be hurt, and he cursed the day he had agreed to allow her to come along on this trip. Sighting their prey, the soldiers hesitated. Then somebody must have realized that the escaping rebels had no distance weapons, and they surged forward again. The ones with bows, only three of them that Agro could see, moved to the side of the advancing pack and nocked arrows, looking for targets. Agro popped out of his own cover behind a cluster of barrels, yelled defiance, and ducked down again. Two arrows thudded into the barrels; if the third archer fired, Agro couldn't tell where his arrow had gone. The sounds from the ship were becoming one-sided, and Agro guessed, hoped, that it was the rebels who were winning. Another minute, half a minute, and the soldiers would be on them. "Agro, they've got the boat! We have to get on it now," Bindi called. He could hear her moving and leaped up again, yelling, to distract the archers. Arrows, but the soldiers were so close now that a third volley was impractical from their point of view. Bindi yelped, and Agro heard her fall. The leading soldiers weren't looking at him, they must be aiming for Bindi. With a roar of rage, Agro hurled himself at their pursuers, his sword moving like a scythe as he mowed down the men who would harm his teammate. The soldiers fell back, dismayed by his fury--those of them who were still alive. They left three bodies behind them. "Agro, I'm okay," Bindi called. "Come ON, we have to get out of here!" Agro gutted one soldier who was too slow withdrawing, then turned and leaped for the boat. Bindi was already on board. She was bleeding from her leg, but he could see that it wasn't a major wound, and one of the rebels was already working to bandage it. Tully was at the rear of the boat, at least one other man was climbing around overhead, and several were pushing the boat away from the pier with long poles. The archers fired a last, futile volley, the arrows falling into the water as the boat moved outward. "To Niatoli," Agro said, nodding at Tully. "But we'll be back...." + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Charter Cities #94 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Between Morya and Rocanis originally, but now somewhere else: Iron Talon immediately abandoned trying to draw her sword and threw herself off her horse on the other side. Not difficult, since the horse was rearing and screaming. And the monster which was not Lugard was immediately distracted, turning its claws on the frantic beast instead. Iron Talon landed and rolled to her feet, and now she did have time to draw her sword. The monster had the horse down and was ripping at its belly, making a bloody mess without killing the poor beast. Iron Talon cut the horse's throat quickly as she circled. The monster didn't notice when the horse stopped screaming and thrashing, didn't notice the furious woman coming up behind it with a sword. Its stupidity surprised her, but she didn't mind. It was fine with her, in fact. She glided in and sank her blade into the monster's kidney. She felt the blow as a near- paralyzing stab in her back. Apparently the monster didn't have kidneys, and that purple stuff on her blade was not blood. It whirled, batting at her sword with one... paw. It looked less like Lugard than it had at first, for which she was grateful. And it didn't seem to know anything about intelligent fighting, either--grab and claw-slash seemed to be the extent of its abilities. When her sword was knocked out of line by its first blow, she twisted a little and let her self fall and roll in that direction, glad enough to go down until the pain faded a little. Then she came back to her feet to hack at its neck. By chance--she was sure it was not an intentional block--it threw up one arm and took the edge of her blade there. Her sword cut to the bone, but the monster didn't seem to notice. Her sword dropped from a hand suddenly strengthless as pain ripped through her own arm. Iron Talon lurched back out of the way and wondered what she was going to do if the thing was unkillable. Silly question. She'd die, that's what. As she watched, the damaged arm healed. The monster straightened up, taking a more man-like posture, swaying as though with some internal struggle, and its features... flowed like softened wax, shaping themselves into Lugard's face again. The claws became less obvious, the teeth less like a shark's as it grimaced. But its eyes remained black, doorways into the Pit. "I will not harm you," the monster said. The movements of its lips did not quite match the words. "You gave me entry into this shape, creatrix. But you must not attempt to harm me. You must not deny me what I need. That is no part of a creator's duty. You must provide for me, as you provided this meat. I will eat, and you will stay here and not harm me, and then you will give me water to drink. You will take me to more meat. This is your duty." "I'll die first," she growled. "I'll kill you if I die in the attempt." "You will die," it said. "We are bound together by your act of creation." Fires blazed in the darkness of its eyes. "You will wait where you are until I have fed," it commanded. Furious, Iron Talon bent to pick up her sword again. And cried out, as fire wrapped around her. She had never known such pain, and when it suddenly stopped, that was pain of another kind. She lay on the gravelly ground, gasping for breath. "You will not attempt to harm me," the monster said. "It will not be permitted." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 480): CHYNA of HAWKS (Mr. Monsen, mgr.) DADDY of MIKE'S INK (Hombre, mgr.) SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of TROCAR! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. There were bitter words at ELDRITCH FURY's guildhouse after a 0-1-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 11th. Dark Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week POMPOUS PALADINS went 3-2-0 to move up 5 in the rankings. KILLER BEE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested LUR and was awarded 17 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, SIR CASWALLAWN put down MARK SCHUPPLI, causing him to lose 8 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has SLIPPERY NIPPLE in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week she's proven hers combat skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city TROCAR. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in TROCAR these days is USELESS TOOLS. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding USELESS TOOLS. Indeed it was THE WHITE COMPANY. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after LUR. Watch your back! At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on RAVEN CLAW. He has got the courage it takes. Witness his challenge this turn against BIRAN! Truth to tell, RAVEN CLAW did not come out of the fight a winner, but he managed to capture much attention, gaining 3 in recognition. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that THE LIMPER posted a challenge against the more highly recognized CERISA. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand THE LIMPER defeated CERISA. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more than its fair share of red in recent times. This week marked the last days of WEE JAS who at 10-5-3 was dispatched to the Dark Arena by the command of ELDRITCH FURY's demanding management. Was I the only one shocked to see the well respected fighter WEE JAS (10-5-3) appear on the sands of the Dark Arena? He is now dead. My hearty congratulations MU, for thy revenge upon SIR LOIN OF BEEF, slayer of thy fallen comrade. Next time he will know better, eh? Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! I have had plenty of 1-4's, but never the dreaded 0-5. Guess that shows me what I need to do. Though it was my first 0-5, it won't be my last! They are all going to the DA next turn. I may keep one of them, but doubtful. -- Master Darque Silverbolt -- I don't think I will be able to take advantage of that for much longer. -- Mousetrap Slippery Nipple -- A quick squeeze to the top. Will you be staying around long? -- Microsoft Cerisa -- Time to bite the big one -- Rubber Bullet Balz Weber -- What a well timed worm, shutting everything down and making me roll around on the ground. -- A.O. Hell Urs Bollinger -- Surprise! -- No-Stick Tape Joey Abeq -- The Tools were always intimidated by you early in your career, but felt that you were actually losing skills with experience. Of course we'd like to know more about the set-up that could do that. -- Crip, mgr. of Useless Tools Joey Abeq -- I want to download all the info about everyone into my own private database. -- Microsoft Wimperetta -- I'm here! Exactly how would you fix my multiple consonant-double vowel name? I burn with fevered anticipation as to your ideas. -- Gruumsh All -- I've not received any notification on the "Dead Tourney." Doesn't it run every year? -- Shadowmere Rubber Bullet -- Don't count me out yet! -- Mr. S.C.U.M. No-Stick Tape -- What can I say? I'm just trying to swim in turbulent waters. Good match though. Next time I meet Mousetrap I'll be sure to reset him and put new cheese out. -- Nightsong Rubber Bullet -- I may, I say MAY recover from your blows, but I don't know if I can live down the humiliation of being CARRIED out of the arena after you slapped my hand twice. -- Cerisa Fireant -- Did you know that if you wait till the temperature is over a hundred, all the ants go underground in their nest, and then you can pour boiling water down it and really make them sick? -- Daroshtan P.S. Hey, I'm a nice guy, but fireants are fair game. I felt sorry for the Concubine. She's had a hard life. -- Joey Abeq Locust -- (softly) You must turn the other cheek, my boy. That is the way to win. It's the meek, you know. -- Wimples Umis -- Your misfortune. *I* am not meek. -- Wimperetta 29 September 2003 All -- Let it be known that the Firm accepts SOL into its ranks.
