From Monuntial to Niatoli:
Agro didn't know if the Usurper's men hadn't been able to get a boat moving fast
enough to do any good, or if they'd decided this little band of rebels wasn't worth
the effort, but nobody followed them out of Monuntial harbor. Someone had mentioned
that the Usurper's men patrolled all around the peninsula, though, so maybe they
didn't feel there was any need for pursuit. Not a comforting thought, but he'd been
a long time out of the egg since he expected things to go easily. At least the
rebels seemed to know their way about this boat, or maybe it was a ship, and to know
the waters. He'd heard that there were a lot of hazards in the lake in this area,
rocks under the surface, and wrecks that would rip the bottom out of an unwary boat
as fast as the rocks would.
One of the men who had climbed up the mast yelled, "Ship coming!"
Everyone looked back toward the shore, but the water was empty of other vessels.
The peninsula itself was merely a dark band of trees on the horizon, the city a
cluster of paler shapes. Agro staggered as the deck underfoot shifted and tilted.
He glanced around and saw that the approaching ship was coming from farther out, and
it was big, and there were...he squinted, rather a lot of armed men on the deck,
sunlight winking off shields and helms and spear points.
Tully, at the stern, was yelling commands to the two men up the mast, and they
were scrambling around doing things with ropes and sails. Lots of sails. The deck
tilted farther, and Agro, clinging to the railing, had a view of the Storm Sea's
clear, dark-green water rushing by close at hand. It was laced with foam, very
decorative, and very uninviting. He hoped the ship wasn't in the process of turning
over and dumping them into the lake. He glimpsed things poking upward from the
bottom, some wrecked ship's timbers, maybe, or drowned trees. They didn't quite
reach the ship he was on, but what if there were others reaching a little higher? He
could swim, and Bindi could swim, but they preferred WARM water....
The ship tilted the other way, not instantly, but it felt like a fast change
anyway. Agro released the rail and allowed himself to slide toward the cabin in the
middle of the deck, pulled himself upright, and looked around to see what was
happening. The rebels who weren't engaged in steering the ship were holding onto
whatever they could reach, and he guessed they were praying. And the other ship was
approaching, not aiming directly at them, but the Croc could see that the two courses
were converging despite the crooked maneuvers Tully was sailing.
The bigger ship was zigzagging, too. Ah, trying to find a clear channel! Of
course. And being bigger, it would need a deeper channel. That must be what Tully
was counting on, because it was a good bet they couldn't outrun the other. The other
ship was so close that he could hear people in the front of it screaming warnings to
the steersman. It was changing course, but slowly. Well, you couldn't expect it to
skid around like a pony. With any luck, it'd hit some snag and get the bottom ripped
out, a prospect Agro could view with enthusiasm. Too bad there wouldn't be time to
go after some of the survivors.... The Croc licked his lips and sighed. Oh, well,
another time.
As he had that thought, the bigger ship seemed to jerk and shudder, slowing
suddenly. Some of the rebels who knew how ships ought to behave cheered.
One of them, scrambling along the deck, thumped Agro on the shoulder and
shouted, "Niatoli, here we come! We'll be there in time for dinner!"

Between Morya and Rocanis originally, but now somewhere else:
Iron Talon lay without moving, watching the monster eat her horse and cursing
herself for her impulsive act of creation. There must be a way to defeat the thing,
but she couldn't think of one. Yet. She WOULD think of one. If she had to turn her
sword on herself to kill it, then she would...but she hoped it didn't come to that.
Better if she could find a way to UN-create it. Her thoughts focused abruptly. Was
that possible? She'd need another zone of magical sensitivity like the one that had
led to this monster's birth, but....
She sat up, then glanced at the monster. Gods, was it going to eat the WHOLE
horse for one meal?
"Seems like that'd be bound to make it sluggish," Lugard murmured in her ear.
Iron Talon stiffened, holding her breath. That was Lugard's voice, truly
Lugard's voice. But what did it mean? Lugard had...almost certainly had died in the
lava--
"I'm a ghost," the voice answered. It sounded quite cheerful, as though being a
ghost wasn't different, in any way that mattered, from being a live man. And Iron
Talon could think of a lot of ways it would matter. The voice chuckled. "Okay,
maybe not exactly a ghost, because I don't THINK I'm dead...exactly. But there's a
problem with my body. I, uh, seem to have mislaid it somewhere...."
Iron Talon looked around wildly. This couldn't be real. NONE of it could be
real--the monster, the ghost, the world that wasn't HER world, the whole mess--
"Real enough," Lugard assured her. "And you've got to act like it's real, or
we're all lost."
"But--"
"Because it IS real. Trust me, Ronnie."
"What do you want me to do?"
"Hug the monster."
"WHAT?" She glanced quickly at the monster, but it didn't react to her shout.
"You heard. Right now I'm linked to you. Because, well, because I am. But
that thing is, sort of, in my body. Well, sort of my body. You know what I mean!
With physical contact, I can transfer to THAT body." A pause. "At least, I think I
can. I should be able to."
"There's already somebody in that body," Iron Talon protested.
"Yeah, makes it a challenge, doesn't it?" Lugard was grinning, she could tell
from his tone. "Let's give it a try, Ronnie. After all, what else can you do?"

SPY REPORT
Good day, in TROCAR a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor.
So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. Now keep the taverns open late
tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for ELDRITCH FURY, whose 0-0-0 this turn
dropped them by 5 into 16th. DREIHDENWALD stable has parlayed this turn's 5-0-0 into
a 5 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 2nd place. Good work, guys!
The PLAGUES guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You
never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, ODDMAN fought
WIMPERETTA and gained 22 points and contributed to DREIHDENWALD's 5-0-0. SIR
CASWALLAWN has lost to SLOW GIN FIZZ, falling 13 points, while helping make POMPOUS
PALADINS a 0-5-0 turn. BIRAN challenged for the Duelmastership this turn, attempting
to dethrone INDULGENT DRINKS' warrior. Somebody's not going to like this, (then
again, somebody will), but our Duelmaster, SLIPPERY NIPPLE, has died, and BIRAN has
killed her. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources
that The Swinging Aardvark uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. RUNNING AMOK has cause to stand tall,
as they were TROCAR's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And avoiding RUNNING AMOK more than any other team we find USELESS TOOLS.
TROCAR, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans,
take notice that SILVERBOLT from RUNNING AMOK was TROCAR's most challenged warrior
this turn. FIREANT of PLAGUES had better have a good reason for challenging down 14
points in a challenge which she won. I thought FIREANT showed great skill and
promise when she bested JOKAROF TROCAR. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? Is it really true that TROCAR has more dishwashers per capita that
fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, TROCAR, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls.
Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep
your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in TROCAR again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

takes normal damage, does good damage. -- Nick for Traders of Trocar
Gruumsh -- (purring) I would start by putting you at ease, a drink, a light meal, a
back rub.... Then...something more. I just love those big, tough, manly consonants
and the hint of tenderness in the double vowel. -- Wimperetta, licking her fangs in
anticipation
Shadowmere -- It didn't used to run every year, but it seems to be doing so now, and
you have doubtless had your notification, yes? Because it ran already. -- Nick

Let it be known far and wide, that the Warrior TUM 18-7380, the Champions Runner-Up
for the recent Tournament, is managed by none other than Shocking Toad. I named this
fabulous warrior after my friend and mentor, TUM, a.k.a. Don! Sorry TUM didn't get
me my first TC; however, a runner-up with all those sandbaggers is pretty impressive,
if I do say so myself. -- Shocking Toad, The Manager

All -- This is to announce that I am no longer a member of the Vendetta Cartel
Alliance. I have enjoyed my time there, and I've made some great friends. Their
company will be missed, but they will endure. I wish them well. -- Apex

TOURNEY FREEZE CHANGE -- ADVANCE NOTICE
Beginning at the Winter Face-to-Face in Tempe (January 2004), we will implement
several changes affecting tournaments. The tournament announcement for the upcoming
FTF and future tourneys will reflect these changes.
First, we will eliminate the tourney freeze for all regular DM warrior classes.
Regular DM warriors will not be classed ahead of the tournament, but instead will
fight according to their FE on the date of the tourney. There will still be a freeze
for the ADM classes, occurring on the same timeline as before, approximately 6 weeks
before the tournament.
In addition to the above change, the warrior classes will be slightly altered.
The new tourney classes will be as follows:
DM Tourney Classes ADM Tourney Classes
====================== ======================
0 FE: Rookies Freshmen
1-4 FE: Apprentices ADM
5-10 FE: Initiates Eligibles
11-20 FE: Adepts ---induction---
21-30 FE: Champions Contenders
31+ FE: Challengers Primus
All regular DM tourney classes will remain solely FE based. All ADM classes will
now be based on warrior characteristics (i.e., the ADM split algorithm), including the
Freshmen class.
The Gateway and Primus arenas will be merging before the FTF to form one top
arena. These warriors will be split into two tournament classes, the Contenders and
the Primus classes, again based upon their characteristics. More information on this
will be published in the newsletters for those arenas.
If you have any questions about the above changes, please contact Customer
Service. Good luck in your games.
