They were a motley bunch, drawn from several teams, managers, and arenas, people he'd found passing through Valamantis on their way from one place to another. Mostly from the arenas where they were fighting--most of them were still in Basic--to some holiday spot for a week's recreation. Most people assumed that gladiators always stayed home, practicing relentlessly, but that was the way to dull your edge, not improve it. He glanced at Arenamistress Sitalva, but she shook her head slightly. It was his show, apparently. He took a breath and began. "You see the towers of Old Valamantis, raised by blood sorcery." Everyone turned to look. Smeds of The Black Company, Mordant, sniffed dismissively. "Second class stonework," he declared. The Dwarf's gesture took in needle-thin towers webbed together with bridges like dreams. "Not really stonework at all; that's built with magic. Was built with magic in the beginning." "Stupid," agreed Shamu (The Watchmen, Cliffhome). The two Dwarves nodded at each other. "Unreliable. Not like good honest stones that stay up whether you're paying attention to them or not." Goblin (The Taken, Kaltos) frowned at the no-longer-ruined city. "You mean somebody's got to pay attention to that all the time, or it falls down?" he asked in a voice like gravel grinding together. "Not EXACTLY," murmured Lavender Lance (Colour Guards, Illis). Quickly, before the two Dwarves could protest, she added, "In principle, yes, quite possibly. But nothing is EVER that simple. What I've heard--I'm no mage, but there's always talk of magic on Illis, you understand--is that a spell can be put into a THING, like, well...like the sound is in a bell, maybe. Or like the light is in a candle. Under the right circumstances, it comes out without anybody having to think about it right THEN, and it keeps on existing as long as the circumstances last. I suppose I'm explaining that very BADLY, but--" "But we follow it well enough," Sputter (Joka Masher, Dwes Eg, Lord Protector) finished. "So there might be a THING that we could break and the towers would fall down, hmm?" "Bringing the towers down again might be a good thing," Ka D'Argos interjected, "but it won't solve the problem here, even if we could find the right spell-holders to destroy. That won't get rid of the people." "Zombies," Groblin growled contemptuously. "Not entirely," Sitalva said. "We haven't gone into the old city, but we've watched it closely, and there are some people who don't appear to be undead." "How can you tell?" Smeds demanded. "Just because somebody's not falling apart doesn't mean he isn't a NEW zombie." "There are live and potent Folstrom wizards in the old city," a new voice said. The pleasant tenor seemed to come out of empty air but was quickly followed by a man in a dark blue robe spangled with silver stars, his hair bound back from his youthful face by a silver band. He bowed slightly. "Tensekai," he introduced himself, "known here as the Silver Mage. Bringing down the towers without first destroying the Folstrom would be futile, a waste of energy. And not easy, either, as the spells that uphold the towers are well guarded. The important thing is that this situation, unnatural and abominable as it is, gives us a chance to undo a great error out of the past. We can destroy the Folstrom this time, rather than merely driving them off." "Correct me if I'm wrong," Lavender Lance murmured, batting her eyelashes at the mage, "but I HAVE read a little history. I thought the Folstrom weren't destroyed because it wasn't possible? They were too strong for the Forces of Good to bring them down completely." Tensekai nodded unhappily. "That's true. But we've had three millennia to study further. We have new arts and new allies to bring to the battle this time." "And what might the Folstrom have learned in three thousand years?" Ka D'Argos asked. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 495): SMEDS of THE BLACK COMPANY (Darkfist, mgr.) SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of TROCAR brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. If this keeps up, CLICHES, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 5 in the rankings? THE MUPPETS turned their 4-0-0 turn into a 2nd place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see FOZZY win a fight and gain 18 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FOZZY beat IN-LAWS and IN-LAWS lost 11 points. You're breakin' my heart. MOUSETRAP challenged TROCAR's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as MOUSETRAP takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, TROCAR? My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start talking.' I loved that woman. What's the big D? PLAGUES was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was THE BLACK COMPANY. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, IN-LAWS was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this one, but KILLER BEE has challenged up by 37 in an attempt against RUBBER BULLET. And sure, KILLER BEE lost alright, but gained 5 recognition for his pains. And pains they may indeed be! Looks like time for laurels or hemlock, RALPH was challenged by FIREANT, who was ranked 29 points below it. Not that I'm surprised or anything, but FIREANT was defeated by RALPH, leaving the latter lower for recognition points. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for TROCAR's morgue. More variety. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah! Tattered banners and forgotten memories wailed in the wind for a dynamic death march to dawn once more upon the blood stained sands of the Delarq slow arena. The distant call crying for a declaration of restoration amidst the ruin of the all but forgotten Delarq arena carried to the far corners of Alastari; drawing the Devious, the Diabolical, the Dangerous and the Down Challenging to cross blades and wage warfare among an assemblage of new stables managed by the Known and Unknown; willing to spill fresh blood, while carving their destiny during 15 Rounds of contest driven combat to be known as the "Illis Incredibly Diabolical Delarq Death Fest". A lone cloaked figure huddled by lamplight in a remote outpost near the crossroads of ElseWhere and ElseWhen; feverishly formulating the foundational framework for the dawning of the Delarq Death Fest in DM 59, complete with Gladiatorial Commission sanctioned prizes to promote the growing thirst for a Delarq Slow Arena Death Festival. Delarq Death Fest Opening Round debuts the first turn immediately following the Summer 2004 F2F Tourney and continues through the completion of 15 consecutive rounds. Death Fest points are Won or Lost ONLY in the DM 59 Delarq Slow Arena [Tourneys DO NOT Add or Subtract from the Death Fest Point Scoring System]: Death Fest Scoring Format: Win =3D +2 pts Loss =3D -1 pt Kill =3D +5 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win] Death =3D -3 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss] Dark Arena Kill =3D +10 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win] Dark Arena Death =3D -5 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss] Revenged Blood Feud =3D +5 pts [successful Revenged Blood Feud provides Death Fest contestants the opportunity to cancel out 3 pts for Death and 1 pt for Loss; while gaining +1 pt overall for the Revenged Blood Feud in addition to the +2 pts for Win] DEATH FEST PRIZES will be awarded to the Top Ten Death Fest Stables on the basis of Total Points*** accumulated during the 15 rounds of competition as follows: 1. Favorite Weapon Knowledge for 1 (one) warrior ranked Initiate or higher on the Final Round to be revealed by RSI to each of the Top Ten Death Fest Stables 2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters and NPCs [yet to be determined according to how many DA Monsters and NPCs are available in DM 59 for Renaming] 3. The Top Five Death Fest Stables will receive New Team Rollup Certificates as follows: 1st (10), 2nd (8), 3rd (6), 4th (4) and 5th (2) 4. Renaming Illis Arena for 6 months plus Receiving 6 months Free Play courtesy of RSI will be awarded to the manager of the 1st Place Death Fest Stable 5. Discussions are underway regarding a possible Special Award granted to the Illis Iron Stable qualifiers who compete in 67 of a possible 75 fights during the course of the 15 consecutive rounds of the Death Fest [Key Factor is How Many (?) stables will be competing in the Death Fest without drawing away participation by current managers in the remaining slow arenas!] Therefore, it is important for all managers entering stables in DM 59 for the upcoming Death Fest to contact RSI as soon as possible regarding their participation in this contest so that a Final Ruling on the proposed Illis Iron Stable Award can be issued by RSI. ***TieBreaker is determined on the Final Round by the DM 59 Newsletter Recognition Rankings. The stable with the Highest Ranked Active Gladiator is granted the decision. [Example: Warrior A and Warrior B are both listed in the Recognition Rankings with 87 pts; however, because Warrior A is listed in the Recognition Rankings ahead of Warrior B, then Warrior A is granted the TieBreaker Decision for His/Her stable!] Opening Round Team Spotlight Bonus [minimum 15 paragraphs!] Each Delarq Death Fest competitor who writes a Team Spotlight featuring their Stable (Name) and Managerial Alias [Gladiatorial Names Optional] in regards to competing in the Delarq Death Fest will receive 25 pts added to His/Her opening round score. Illis Iron Stable Bonus [in addition to the proposed award awaiting RSI approval!] Any manager whose stable competes in at least 67 of the possible 75 fights during the 15 rounds of Death Fest receives 25 points added to His/Her final overall score [this allows each stable the cushion of missing one round of competition; plus up to 3 additional fights due to waiting for replacement rollups from Deaths suffered either in Tourneys or during the Death Fest contest in DM 59 over the course of 15 rounds of competition!] Delarq Death Fest Hosted by Hammer [Who Else?] LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS ARIEN GLEND was dealt death by CONJURED DEMON in a 2 minute Dark Arena fight.
