Xochithlan:

Raigavor stared up at the wall and counted from the corner, "A turret, a turret,
a downspout, a turret, two gargoyles, and...there!" He stepped forward and tapped
gently on a stone at shoulder level which differed from the ones around it only in a
faint shadow-pattern that seemed to underlie the surface.
No, Master Darque decided it was actually a fossil of something like a snail
with tentacles, maybe two inches across. There was a soft musical note, enough
delayed that it didn't seem to belong to the tapping. Raigavor tapped again, several
taps with irregular spacing, probably a code. The half-demon memorized it
automatically; you never knew when you might need somebody else's identifying code.
The wall shimmered next to the stone and became an archway. Raigavor stepped
through. Darque hesitated--no telling what was beyond, and was he supposed to follow
blindly?--then stepped through behind him, a bolt of power gathered and ready to
launch at need.
A woman was standing in the space beyond the wall. A typical Shagornan elf,
slender, moderately tall, haughty-featured, dark of skin and hair. She frowned at
Raigavor. "I was not expecting you, wizard." Her tone made it an accusation.
The Red Wizard shrugged. "I know. I like it that way. We've come to lend you
a hand in your intrigues."
Master Darque frowned. Why should he aid this woman? And he hated palace
intrigue, unless it would increase HIS power.
"Nothing more can be done without a master sigil," the woman snapped.
Raigavor smiled, an expression that would have sent a normal human into
screaming retreat. "I am aware of that. This gentleman possesses a master sigil.
So if you have the assassins at hand--" Raigavor paused and shook his head. "I
think you're unwise, Illayina. Kill your King Feyn if you wish--no loss there, but
leave King Feyen alive here. The trouble that will be stirred up--"
"The king of the two cities owes me a death," the woman said. "FEYEN owes me a
death for killing my sister-self, Illaina. And the politics of Xochithlan and
Kochilfan are not your concern. Do not meddle."
Raigavor looked at her in silence for several minutes, his lips pressed together
in a hard line and a frown gathering. "By killing Feyen," he said finally, "you will
cause one of two things to happen--or both of them. You will increase Feyn's
personal power, or you will precipitate a disaster in both cities. Or both. I do
not see how either outcome can further your own desire to rule Kochilfan."
Darque watched the argument develop with the academic interest of a spectator at
a sporting event. From his studies he knew that certain parts of Alastari were
"twinned" in an adjacent universe; clearly the sigil that he held in his mind had
something to do with the linking of the two worlds. Well and good. It was not a
common occurrence, but it did happen sometimes. The woman's motives he understood
completely: revenge and a desire for power, though her ambition seemed curiously
limited in scope. Only one city? And her disregard for the consequences of
disturbing the linkage was short-sighted. Too obsessed with her revenge, no doubt.
Raigavor was less obvious. He did not seem to want to rule the city--or any
other that had been mentioned--himself. Thinking it over, Darque decided that
Raigavor had spent too long as a court wizard. His motives were contaminated by that
battle cry of good rulers and bane of ambitious magicians everywhere, "concern for
the common weal." That was good to know; it was a weakness in the wizard that could
be exploited at need. Good. Sooner or later, Darque knew that he would part company
and purposes with Raigavor, and he did not like the idea of leaving an unneutralized
enemy behind him.
"Don't MEDDLE, wizard!" the woman said.
Raigavor sighed and shrugged. "Do as you wish, then, Illayina. There's no
separating a fool from her folly." He held up a hand to forestall another comment
from her. "Let us just get on with our business."

Rocanis:

Uncle Wolf looked at the swirling knots of shamans, listened to the agitated and
increasingly strident babble of argument, and shook his head. "That's torn it," he
repeated.
"But they must see that what Bluesnake has proposed is the same thing he told
them you would do--that HE be the one to hold the Sword and decide on its use," Ghost
Dancer protested.
"Of course they don't see it!" The speaker was Rain Caller of the Haimgedai,
the oldest shaman present. "Bluesnake is appealing to their emotions, not their
minds. If they have any minds," he added bitterly. "It was like this before, when
the Great Khan said he would make all the tribes great and lead them to trample
Alastari under their horses' hooves. Some tribes were completely destroyed in that
war. Many will never be so strong as they once were. Where are the Tilvagedai
today, or the Skaevalgedai?"
"We cannot go back and change the past," Wolf said. His tone was so sharp that
Ghost Dancer wondered if that had been suggested to him at some point. "We can only
learn from it."
Rain Caller glared at him from under snow-white brows. "Easy to say, hard to
do. What is your plan?"
Wolf turned to scan the whole assembly of shamans before speaking. Then he
shrugged. "If I thought we could kill Bluesnake, here and now, I would attempt it.
At this moment, he is a greater enemy to us than Volundagh and the Sword."
"The others wouldn't stand for--" the old man began.
"Which is why I'm not doing it." Wolf glanced at the group around the Saarda
again, and his lip curled into a sneer worthy of his totem animal. "Did you think I
held off out of fear of Bluesnake?"
Rain Caller snorted. "None think that who know what happened at the Buffalo
Gate." Then he sighed and added, "But many of the young men do NOT know of that."
Wolf swept that away with a gesture and turned to his younger companion. "Go
find Redfox, Ghost Dancer. Bring him to me here."
Ghost Dancer went, but reluctantly. He had never heard of a Buffalo Gate, and
he had hoped that one or the other would tell that story. How could he learn if such
information was not passed along?

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to TROCAR once again! Biff! Pow! TROCAR watched with glee as SEA
DOGS got knocked off top spot by CARESS OF STEEL! Phhbltt! Too much drinking and
too little dodging gave OF WOLF AND MAN a 2-3-0! I got a good laugh out of it! Ya
gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the
pain! BATTLE BEASTS 2 is now ranked 11th with a 3-2-0 turn. LEAKY TEEPEE showed
TROCAR what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0.
What's with NICKLEBACK? It actually beat TRADERS OF TROCAR's WIMPERETTA, and walked
away with 24 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at MILLENIUM METAL while
they watched NICKLEBACK clobber WIMPERETTA. She lost 21 points and got bruised from
objects thrown from the stands. I'm sure TROCAR is excited about VIRET, the new
Duelmaster from TRADERS OF TROCAR. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I
have... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow
fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was USELESS TOOLS. The bums at STEEL REIGN couldn't face the
challenges from USELESS TOOLS! No excuse for that!
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Some people in TROCAR think SPARF! was too harsh
when they sent MEL (5-0-0) to the Dark Arena. Them's the breaks, I say. SOLID GONE
larned his lesson (VIKING RAIDER taught it well), and we right likely won't be seein'
'im fight any SPARF! members with the same gusto. How long have I been here? I got
people to see, places to go...
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm
writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now.
Practice, practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

                                     PERSONAL ADS

Consortium Manager -- HAL managed to dispose of the P-ad that was verified as
received from my stable last cycle as well.  That puts me in good company! -- Hammer;
Minister of War

Trocar Tribute Teams -- Hammer was about to send me to the Fall Mailer Tourney, that
is until he realized that it would have disqualified me from the contest; however, by
the way that I have been conducting myself on the contest sands, it seems as though I
have been disqualifying myself from the competition anyway! -- GRUNGE GRL HAMMER

Baphomet -- Hey, just so you know, I no longer own Dark Pentagram (08-30-05). My new
team will be running here and there, been here for two months (The RU). Well, you
know brother, see you in North Fork. -- Liam the Goth

Stik -- I don't know if the new owner will be BFing you or not? -- Liam
P.S. Good luck to you. :)

Thanks, Editor, we may just take you up on that verification of e mails. Our good
friend Rillion told us the best way to handle it was to send Hal two different
copies. What do you think? Our Consortium friends have noted elsewhere in Alastari
that even Hal's confirmations cannot always be trusted. (est. confidence = 90%) --
Vet, Mgr. Hold That Tiger

One thing to double check is that the confirmation is for the correct arena. In
the body of the confirmatory e-mail, it should say where the stuff was sent.
Another thing to do is make sure you have the arena information and such in the
body of the e-mail ("personal ads dm 54" for this arena, for instance). That
way, if they show up in some other arena, it will be obvious and they can be
redirected to the correct one with the appropriate note. If the problem
continues, maybe save your receipts and original e-mails until the arena in
question has run. If stuff doesn't show up, let us know and we can try and
track it down--if there is such a consistent problem it'd be good to figure out
what it is and FIX it. -- Ed.

Higher -- Hah, hah, apparently you weren't higher enough? You were like a shark out
of water. Me I just kept going and going--like the Energizer Shark! -- Hold That
Tiger SHARK

Finnigan -- Well, now, I finally bombed a drive AND sank the putt. -- Hold That Tiger
WOODS

Xyco -- You were too much for this poor little kitty cat! -- Hold That BENGAL Tiger

Solid Gone -- Now that wasn't fair? You pick on a kid? My mommy told me to avoid
adults like you. You bad, bad person. -- Hold That Tiger CUB

Thor Ravenblade -- It is always a pleasure to match up with you. I had my frosted
flakes; what happened to you? -- Hold That TONY THE Tiger

Sea Dogs -- Nice point gain, you CADS! -- Vet, Mgr. Hold That Tiger

All -- Ugh--I go now, drifting off to where 60% of my original team lie--six feet
under. My Putz-ly numbers were: 7-5-19-15-9-14-15: AB. Our little arena breeds
ugliness. -- The Ghost of Putz

All -- Normally we do a bit more for our ads, but since Rillion is headed out for a
two week vacation, we decided to take a bit of a break as well. So just the one ad
from us this time. -- Hermoine for Gryffindor House2

Viret -- Egads, don't you ever slow down when taking a bit out of the cheese? --
Mousetrap

Harpooner -- I've been speared though the belly. -- Yahoo Wahoo

Nickleback -- You should get an entire dollar, in my opinion. -- Viking Raider

Snir -- I'd hardly call those cat-like reactions at the start of the duel. -- Madam
Venusia

Skorindelle -- I think the lack of a train is the sign of the end of my road. -- Mel

Rune Knight -- Are you sure someone didn't typo your name, and you really aren't the
Rude Knight in disguise? -- Victorian Mandarin

Janix -- I don't understand, I thought my manager would be happy with me, but he
keeps muttering "it should have been you." -- Fungi Warrior

Dani -- Please just kill me! -- Yellow Snow

Rillion -- Congrats on your "first turn" victory, enjoy the rollups! The "home
stretch" is yet to come. -- Stik

System of a Down -- Just my luck to run into you on my first fight. I still should
have beaten you, however. Be thankful we can't challenge! I'll take my learns and
see you again down the road, perhaps.... -- Sceptre of Steel Reign

Swashbuckler -- I hate it when I'm beaten at my own game.... -- Venturia

Wastelander -- <grinning and testing the edge of his blade> Yes, it really is quite
wicked, isn't it?? -- Wicked Slice

Juunk -- Again we meet! I look forward to facing you again! And again!..as long as
you keep teaching me, I will be there! -- Wrong Way

Shark -- Bah! Why I had that weapon in my hand I have no idea. I gotta stop trying
to swing all together it seems. Just in case of matchups like ours. I was running
fairly hot the entire time believe it or not. Look forward to our next duel. --
Higher

Mochaomhog -- Thank you for the skills, sir! -- Never Die

Havelock the Dane -- You had me worried there for a moment. -- Faceless Man

All -- Greetings, neither death nor prison could keep me from making it here to this
contest. -- Sirius Black, newest member of Gryffindor House2

All -- With the long delay between turns, I can not remember if I had sent in ads for
this turn yet. So just in case here is another set! -- Rillion

Slash -- You are slightly misnamed, but fast none-the-less. I hope I haunt you in
your nightmares, but until I beat you I doubt I will. -- Dementor of Gryffindor
House2

Running Water -- You should consider running away next time. -- Phoenix of Gryffindor
House2

Shellback -- Wow, an unfortunate mismatch for me! Try fighting an adept next time!
-- Neville of Gryffindor House2

Sir Loin of Beef -- You do not seem to be keeping so well. -- Hermoine of Gryffindor
House2

All -- Hated missing the last round of fights. Hope to make this round. -- Wasp

"YELLOW SNOW was overpowered by DANI"--jeez--sounds like I can hold my beer, eh? --
DANI (Janix)

Madame Venusia -- I go in for a Tarot card reading, and you pull a knife. Go figure.
-- Snir (Janix)

Havelock the Dane as the most popular? Egad--you people should be happy you're in
the stands and aren't privy to the odors he gives off after removing his armor!
Peeee-Upie! -- Xyco (Janix)

Rillion -- Congrats on the prize grab at this juncture of the contest! Be wary of
the scrum right behind you though. Some of those chaps seem a bit hungry.... -- Kat

Tony the -- If only we could use challenges, aarrrgh! -- Thor Ravenblade

Grunge grl Hammer -- I was beginning to wonder if you'd ever drop. -- Nyall Bloodgrin

Daristam -- You'll get the hang of it soon enough. -- Erik Thunderhead

Slaughter Hammer -- Your name belies your demeanor. -- Olgerd Vlad

Dementor -- Man, I thought I'd never be cheerful again. Obviously my Patronus was
too much for you. -- Slash

All -- Unless I'm mistaken I should have pulled out second place in this contest, now
if only my boys can keep it up. -- Maximillian

Sir Caswallawn -- That should poke a hole in your pride, losing to a near-drowned
pirate. -- Man Overboard of Sea Dogs

Neville -- Poor Mr. Longbottom. You are still no good at anything. -- Shellback of
Sea Dogs

Congrats go out to Rillion from the Millenium Metal crew for winning the first four
RUs! -- Nickleback

Well, I thought my dominance would continue but.... -- Evergrey

I'm still alive? -- Juunk

Unfortunately. -- Your manager

Fred Weasley -- I wouldn't want to stunt your growth, since you seem to be such an
EXCELLENT little boy. Therefore I did not bite you, as invited to do. -- Wimperetta

Mousetrap -- So, why aren't you out catching mice? Catching mice is a worthy goal.
-- Viret, who has caught a mouse or two in her time

Mel -- Why are you so short? That is unreasonable. You should be training your SZ
every day. -- Skorindelle

Erik Thunderhead -- I don't know how it affects YOU, but it sure makes MY head ache.
-- Daristam

Wrenn -- Isn't a wren a little bird? I don't think you're ready for flying lessons.
-- Penelothe

Wastelander and Ed. -- What were we speculating on? I forgot. -- Wimperetta

Typos, I think. -- Ed., really not too sure either

5 October 2005

exclusively at Willaf.... -- Kurd the Vivisectionist, Your Better

Magic Man -- You are a fellow Canadian, are you not? Where do you hail from? I live
in Kelowna, B.C. -- Maximillian, 8,13, 28, 47, 54
