Street Legal + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Black Sword #7 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + On the plains: Redfox turned in his saddle to look back toward Rocanis, but it had already fallen out of sight behind the curve of the last hills. There was nothing to see except that rolling of the grassy land in all directions, nothing moving that he could see. A bird, maybe, at the limit of his vision. He twitched his shoulders, not quite a shrug. "I think it's probably safe to talk now," he said. He raised an eyebrow at Barudai. Barudai, who called himself a scout and had functioned as a spy at need, shrugged. "We have to take some chances anyway," he said. "But for the moment, yes, probably no spies to hear us here." He looked at Redfox, the oldest of the four Rirorni. "The shamans put you in charge. What is our plan?" The older man laughed. It sounded bitter. "Plan? You can't have a plan without some facts." He sighed and rubbed his face. "Sorry, not your fault. I suppose we head for the last known location of the damned sword." "Taegskel?" Shanks Pony sat a little straighter in his saddle. "I've always wanted to see that place." "Get a spyglass and turn it wrong way around, then look at a midden or an anthill...or both," Ghost Dancer suggested. "I have seen it, and I am not eager to return there." "Then why go? We're all volunteers," Shanks Pony began. The other three laughed. He looked from one to another. "We're not?" Ghost Dancer smiled a little. "You are." "But--" "I've been on an 'adventure' before," Redfox said. "Right, that's why Uncle Wolf wanted you to go. I heard him say so," Pony said. "Yeah, but you didn't hear me volunteering, did you?" "That's a selfish attitude," Shanks Pony said, but he sounded unsure of it. "No. There are tens of thousands of gladiators on the Isle," Ghost Dancer said. "Packed in like sardines in some parts of Talahya, and it would be GOOD for them to get out and adventure, instead of leaving it to us few." Redfox laughed suddenly. "No, if that's what they--or their managers--want to do, I say let 'em do it. They aren't hurting anyone else. The Grey Witch seems to be okay with it. As for us...we're probably going to get into deep trouble at some point, but today the sun is shining, it isn't cold or hot, we've got a lot of open country to cover and good horses to cover it on, so let's enjoy-- Look out!" At which point Redfox, with better reflexes than many warriors his age could boast, threw himself off his horse as a dark shape came screaming down out of the sky. The other three hit the ground seconds later, and their horses bolted, leaving them afoot. Shanks Pony rolled over, trying to drag his sword free of its scabbard, and his eyes widened. It was big for a bird, but it had never hatched out of any natural egg. A flying war machine, maybe, made by a demented magician. Vaguely bird-shaped, claws like grappling hooks, even at the outer joint of the wings, and its wing- feathers glittered along their edges like sword blades. At least there was only one, and the other three members of their party might be able to kill it while it was destroying its first target. + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Black Sword #8 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + On the plains: The war-bird screamed and snapped its toothy beak, thrashed through a turn, and climbed back into the sky. Shanks Pony stared after it, amazed by the suddenness of the attack, by the bird, by its departure. "That dry stream we just crossed," Redfox said urgently, "back to it and get down next to the bank. The higher you are above the ground, the easier a target you make." He suited his actions to his words, racing back to the shallow gully and throwing himself down into it. The others followed quickly, and barely in time, as the war-bird made another dive. Shanks Pony pressed himself against the ground, hearing the wind whistle through the bird's steely feathers. A cloud of arrows descending might sound like that--just before men started dying. It screamed again, and he saw its shadow veer and waver. "It can't maneuver near the ground," Barudai noted. "If we can bait it into sword range--" "Arrows," Ghost Dancer answered firmly. "Shoot it at a distance, that's what arrows are FOR." "If an arrow will pierce it, I'll be surprised," Redfox said. Shanks Pony pressed himself toward a low, barely a foot high, ridge of sand in the stream bed and risked a glance upward. The war-bird was high again, circling for another dive. Even so, how could the other warriors speak so calmly? He feared he might choke on his excitement. Not fear, the bird was too alien to fear now. Later, he was sure he'd be terrified at the memory. If he survived. And there were things to be done, if they could figure out what. He looked around for his companions. Each of them had a weapon in hand. How did they do that, in the heat of leaping off their horses and seeking cover? Barudai just had his sword, but Ghost Dancer must have seized his bow and quiver even as he dismounted, and Redfox actually had a spear! Pony managed to get his own sword out and wished for his shield. Even a small shield would be good to have right now. "We should separate," Barudai said. "It can't get all of us." "It probably could get us all," Redfox countered. "We stay together, which will draw the bird to us, and then kill it." He paused, looking upward. "Not back to back, but close. Whoever is controlling that bird is not making best use of its abilities." "Controlling?" Pony asked. "You think it's a golem or a sending?" "No." That was Ghost Dancer. "I would have sensed that. But it might be mind- controlled." Pony watched it circle and begin another dive toward them. It looked like it was coming straight at HIM, but that was probably just his imagination. He hoped it was just his imagination. "What's the difference?" "A golem," the young shaman said, fitting an arrow to the string of his bow, "is a thing, a tool, made of matter and art. It may be created with a brain of a sort--" "Golems in the arena have brains," the young gladiator protested. "And no 'of a sort' about them." "True, but they also have...souls. Human souls, often enough. Sometimes demons. They are an abomination. Also, they can't always be controlled. That's what happens when something has a soul, it starts thinking for itself. Thinking of its own best interest." He was tracking the bird with his arrow, pivoting in place. "A sending is a creation wholly of magic and spirit and has no physical substance--" "A sending couldn't hurt us, then?" "It could kill anyone it was sent after," Ghost Dancer corrected. "A sending is power. If it's a pure spell," he shrugged, "then the magician who sends it has about as much control as I have over this arrow." The war-bird had steadied in its course, and he finished drawing his bow and released the arrow, immediately whipping another into place. "And a mind-controlled bird is a real bird, however unnatural its breeding may have been," Redfox said. "The magician or shaman imposes his will on it. If he's smart, he just forces a purpose on the creature and lets it pursue that purpose with its own skill." Pony couldn't be sure, but he thought the first arrow hit the bird's chest to one side and glanced off. Scary thought. Would a sword glance off, too? "But this magician was NOT smart," Barudai finished as Ghost Dancer shot again. "A bird that had chosen us as prey would be more dangerous than a man trying to use a bird's assets. Especially a man who has never watched a hawk hunting. Ha!" The second arrow hit and lodged somewhere in the bird's chest. It wobbled in flight but kept coming. "A man with hunting skills would have dived the bird out of the sun," Redfox agreed. He had a two-handed grip on his spear and was pivoting to follow the bird's course, which was toward Barudai. The scout stood firm, waiting. Pony was impressed. He didn't know whether he himself would be able to stand so and await the diving predator. Ghost Dancer fired once more, at close range. Pony could see the arrow hit under a wing, in what would be the armpit on a man. The head sank in, but not far. Still, the force of the blow knocked the bird off its course, and it skittered through the air, falling now as much as swooping downward under control. Redfox was on it with his spear, swinging it around to use the butt as a club. Barudai jumped forward with his sword, and with a start, Pony tightened his grip and did likewise. It was like hacking at a stone. Attempts to cut off the war-bird's head, or a wing or taloned foot, were futile. Its feathers were stronger than the best armor scales. At one point it managed to seize the tip of Barudai's blade in its beak and bite through the steel. Redfox battered it with the butt of the spear and broke or dislocated one wing. "Bash it with rocks," he suggested, panting. "Bury it under a cairn of rocks," Ghost Dancer added. "We may not be able to kill it, but this is a creature of the air, and if we can seal it under earth and stone, that may be enough to stop it." "It will have to be!" Barudai said. "We can do nothing if this lives and follows us." "There's a sort of pit over that way," Pony said, pointing, "and if we want to bury it...." "Good idea." Redfox shifted around the bird until his blows were coming from the other side and he could drive it across the ground toward the pit. Barudai laid aside his damaged sword and hurried to assemble stones beside the pit; Pony went to help him. It seemed to take hours to force the bird into the pit and bury it. Ghost Dancer was standing over the cairn muttering and making invisible marks on the upper stones with his fingers. Pony was surprised, afterward, to glance at the sun and see that no more than an hour had passed. Their horses, he saw, had not gone far; they were visible a mile down the shallow valley. And he was the youngest and least experienced member of the group, which meant going after their mounts was his job. He sighed. "I'll get the horses," he said, and started walking. SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of TROCAR brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for SPARF!, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 8 into 11th. Ha! BATTLE BEASTS 2 turned their 2-3-0 turn into a 8th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch MILLENIUM METAL's heads swell from their 4-1-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see THOR RAVENBLADE win a fight and gain 26 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, IRON TALON beat TONY THE and TONY THE lost 15 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, TROCAR may be getting bland, as SILVERBOLT stays top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? TRADERS OF TROCAR was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was STEEL REIGN. Ha ha ha ha! Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. And what a stunning loss we have here, boys and girls, SWASHBUCKLER of SEA DOGS has added the final loss to his 7-5-2. Tee hee! I can't say as I'm proud to find out that EYE OF THE STORM's CHAOS WARRIOR has killed GINNY WEASLEY from GRYFFINDOR HOUSE2. I can say I wish GRYFFINDOR HOUSE2 good luck in their bloodfeud. Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to see CHAOS WARRIOR and EYE OF THE STORM at The Dripping Blade tonight celebrating their bloodfeud victory over GINNY WEASLEY. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? There's got to be a better place in TROCAR to get a drink than The Dripping Blade! Any suggestions? Well, I've had enough of this drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. 'Twas a nice little tournament and I hope we did honor to the Slaughter Priest. I enjoyed myself and hope you all did too. I am also hoping a few of you stick around. We were down to three teams before the tournament started. -- Blackstorm and Eye of the Storm Nyall -- Must you grin that way when pounding me around? It's real spooky. -- Wastelander Torc and Dani -- What do you think? Should I go SC with an off hand torch? I think I should. -- Storm Angel Jaws -- Thanks for the rating, even if it's too little to late to save my sorry butt! -- Wrenn In Your Tank -- Gotta bob and weave, watch the head! -- Usurper Envi -- Guess my strategy! -- Venturia, sporting a @#$% eating grin Snir -- Story of my life recently.... -- Solid Gone the once mighty and feared Vet -- My, you've been displaying a real vindictive streak for a Consortiumite lately! I like it! -- Stik Crip and Sparf! -- Ah, go suck an egg.... -- Stik and Steel Reign, hurling insults from the back of the pack Madam Venusia -- Yep, survive long enough and it all comes back around! Well feuded, in that case. -- Solid Gone Kestutias -- Well, you get an A for effort. Actually make that a D, but at least you spoke up! -- Stik All -- I propose that next turn, everyone submit their warriors profiles (numbers/ skills/ratings) and any comments or insights on them and your team as a whole and its performance in the Slaughter Challenge. Maximillian brought this idea up on the D2 forum as well. This would make a great and interesting final newsletter for the contest and be an honor to Rich as well. If you want to leave certain warriors out for competitive reasons, that's cool, just do what you can. I will be posting mine. -- Stik Vet -- I suppose we're the complete killers for four rounds now. Shall we readdress your spot on the list? -- The JANIX crew Solid Gone -- Well fought, Dear Lad--and with a nice ending to boot! -- Snir (Janix) Skorindelle -- That is an excellent way to get crossed off the holiday card list! -- Xyco (Janix) Shark -- If the contest rules were a bit different, I'd come back to make that a best of three. -- Dani (Janix) Loopy -- Loopy head all loppy. Why my friends all fall down? -- Torc (Janix) Venturia -- Is your brother some kind of Pet Detective or something? -- Envi (Janix) Oh no, I did a very bad thing, okay two bad things. I forgot to write a personal ad and I won in the Dark Arena. Rillion is gonna kill me! Oh wait, he can't anymore. Perhaps I didn't do such a bad thing. -- Neville of Gryffindor House2 Iron Talon -- I did not think I could last that long without bursting in flames and melting down. -- Phoenix of Gryffindor House2 Wrong Way -- Why do I always have to fight you? It seems like way too many fights with you, since they always turn out the wrong way for me. -- Hermoine of Gryffindor House2 Yahoo -- Hmprh, I certainly do not share the sentiment. -- Sirius Black of Gryffindor House2 Steel Nightmare -- Sorry but I don't like nightmares, I had to terminate this bad dream. -- Ginny Weasley of Gryffindor House2 All -- Well, if there is any justice in the world I will lose this by one point, which means if I had not forgotten personals twice, I would win. -- Rillion All -- I fear my time for a night fight is soon approaching! -- Pit Viper Venturia -- It will take a lot more than that to drop me. -- Olgerd Vlad Torc -- Nasty little bugger, aren't you? -- The late Cold Hearted Trocar -- We're getting close now. It was fun while it lasted. Glad you could come. -- Maximillian Nickleback -- Listen, you wretched golem, I want my whole DIME back, and no smart remarks! You have the NERVE to mock human form without having any blood. You think we will let this pass? Oh, HA! You will be waylaid in alleys and disassembled for spare parts! Your wretched "hide" will be made into armor for ME. You can't get away with this! -- Wimperetta Thor Ravenblade -- A colorful, romantic name, but...color and romance isn't everything, my friend. There is also...winning. The use of challenges and avoids will stand you in good stead. Or sit you in good stead, if that is your preference, which under the circumstances it might be. -- Viret Sir Loin of Beef -- Ah! Nothing fancy, just a good cut of meat. Onions with it, or garlic if permitted, the fat around the edges all crispy and delicious, the meat tender but still something to use the teeth on, maybe a baked potato beside it (nothing fancy to detract from the MEAT), a little applesauce. And no interruptions. -- Penelothe, drooling P.S. I bet lots of women drool over you. Xyco -- I know you get points for using the "tricky" letters, but is it worth it? Life is too short to go around sounding like something that should be stenciled on the side of a shipping container. -- Skorindelle Storm Angel -- (injured look) (very easily achieved) I thought women LIKED cats. My girlfriends all say that to me, you know, "I'm going to give up men and get a cat." So, look, I'm a werecat. You can have the best of both, right? Why are you so mean? -- Daristam Hold that Tiger WOODS -- (devilish smile) I have the moves. -- Wimperetta Higher -- I never sweat! I'm a woman, and women glow, not sweat. HORSES sweat. Men perspire. Women glow. Remember that. -- Skorindelle Blackstorm -- Your score appears correct. -- Street Legal Wallamaloos -- I had you, you SOB! I'll get you next time! -- Evergrey Landlubber -- That is NOT fighting! -- Disturbed Lord (probably) Protector Silverbolt -- I am reliably told that to offer you "lands" would be, besides insane (what King Samir might say to that!), pointless, as you are "going on an adventure" sometime in the immediate future. Which being so, I merely wish you a pleasant trip until you encounter the adventure, and good luck (you'll need it) afterward. -- Arenamaster Jareth Okara 22 February 2006 The Olympics have arrived!
