Monuntial, the waterfront:

The man--he said his name was Tully--pointed out a boat tied at the end of one
of the long piers. "That'd take us all, and I can handle it with a couple of guys to
do the sails." He glanced over his shoulder at their small group. "There's some
here that are good enough."
Agro squinted at the boat in question and noted that it was already occupied by
at least three people. "Okay. You know the men on that boat?"
"Not personally," Tully said, his brows drawing down in a scowl. "But I'm
looking forward to it. Those are Usurper's men. The boat used to belong to my
cousin, but he 'met with an accident' and somebody claimed he left a debt behind--
Kollis that never borrowed money!--and his boat got taken for payment."
"You know the boat then. Good." Agro gestured for his followers to move
closer. When they were in a cluster so that all could hear him, he said, "We're
going to take that boat out there. No damage to the boat if you can help it--that's
our escape route. But damage the men all you want. Let's make it fast, because
those soldiers are going to be behind us any minute."
"Right!" A man with a squint, Agro hadn't heard his name, grinned. "We can do
this, boys! Let's go." He made a sweeping gesture that must have alerted anybody
watching from the boat.
Before the Croc could say anything to him, the remnants of the group that had
been trapped in the arena surged forward. One of the men on the boat shouted, and
heads popped out of a hatch. And just to put the situation over the top, he could
hear more shouts and running feet, the clashing of armor as men jostled against each
other, and a horn blowing some kind of signal behind them. That would be the
Usurper's soldiers. There was no time for planning or any kind of organization.
Making sure that Bindi was with them and nobody lagging, Agro ran for the boat.
Most of his group were ahead of him now, so he figured that made him and Bindi the
rear guard. He didn't like that--what if the soldiers had bows?--but that's the way
it was.
There were yells from the boat, and screams, and the various sounds of combat,
bludgeon sounds, and the ring of steel on steel, grunts and wordless roars of rage
and destruction. Agro hoped that Tully, the man who knew how to handle the boat, was
not among the ones screaming. But he didn't have time to look, because the first of
the soldiers were coming into sight around the corner of a warehouse, and they DID
have bows. Agro swept his teammate Bindi into the protection of a stack of bales and
moved the other way to draw the soldiers off. It was a primary goal with him that
Bindi not be hurt, and he cursed the day he had agreed to allow her to come along on
this trip.
Sighting their prey, the soldiers hesitated. Then somebody must have realized
that the escaping rebels had no distance weapons, and they surged forward again. The
ones with bows, only three of them that Agro could see, moved to the side of the
advancing pack and nocked arrows, looking for targets. Agro popped out of his own
cover behind a cluster of barrels, yelled defiance, and ducked down again. Two
arrows thudded into the barrels; if the third archer fired, Agro couldn't tell where
his arrow had gone.
The sounds from the ship were becoming one-sided, and Agro guessed, hoped, that
it was the rebels who were winning. Another minute, half a minute, and the soldiers
would be on them.
"Agro, they've got the boat! We have to get on it now," Bindi called.
He could hear her moving and leaped up again, yelling, to distract the archers.
Arrows, but the soldiers were so close now that a third volley was impractical from
their point of view. Bindi yelped, and Agro heard her fall. The leading soldiers
weren't looking at him, they must be aiming for Bindi. With a roar of rage, Agro
hurled himself at their pursuers, his sword moving like a scythe as he mowed down the
men who would harm his teammate. The soldiers fell back, dismayed by his fury--those
of them who were still alive. They left three bodies behind them.
"Agro, I'm okay," Bindi called. "Come ON, we have to get out of here!"
Agro gutted one soldier who was too slow withdrawing, then turned and leaped for
the boat. Bindi was already on board. She was bleeding from her leg, but he could
see that it wasn't a major wound, and one of the rebels was already working to
bandage it. Tully was at the rear of the boat, at least one other man was climbing
around overhead, and several were pushing the boat away from the pier with long
poles. The archers fired a last, futile volley, the arrows falling into the water as
the boat moved outward.
"To Niatoli," Agro said, nodding at Tully. "But we'll be back...."

Riztab:

"There was something out there," Tillouisa whispered, squinting into the moonlit
distance. "I SAW it moving across the water."
"Somebody night-fishing in a rowboat," Song of Summer said in a normal voice.
"Everything isn't monsters, Til."
"Ha! That just shows how much YOU know." Tillouisa abandoned her whisper and
scowled at her teammate triumphantly. "I've SEEN monsters, Summer. I know what I'm
talking about. There are ALWAYS monsters around water--"
"In the Shagornan Desert, maybe, but--"
"Everywhere! Water's tricky, Summer. You can't TRUST it," the Rirorni woman
stated positively.
Before Song of Summer could reply to that, a cry floated to them from the dark
lake. Not a human cry, nor the call of any nightbird that either woman had heard
before. There was a little of the wolf howling in it, but what wolf would be in the
middle of miles of water? And even the howl of a wolf did not chill the blood quite
so effectively.
After a moment, Song of Summer swallowed twice and said, "It might not be a
monster even so." She didn't sound like she believed that. "It might be...just some
strange creature out there."
There was another cry from the lake, this time all too human, shrill with terror
and despair. Splashes accompanied it.
"I guess there was a night-fisherman out there, after all," Tillouisa noted.
"You don't have to sound so cheerful about it! That poor man probably died
horribly."
"He would've heard the rumors of monsters same as we did," Tillouisa said,
shrugging. "If he chose to risk the lake anyway, well, what did he expect?" She
turned away from the waterfront.
"I don't suppose there's anything we could do to help him?"
"I don't suppose so. He's probably dead by now. Come on." Tillouisa grabbed
her teammate's arm and started towing her back up the sloping street.
     "Where are we going?"
"Around this block of buildings. They're all collapsed, and we couldn't get
through them. I want to check out the old records building now while the monster's
out on the lake."
"Til! You're INSANE! We don't know there's only ONE monster."
     "We can find out, then."

Malcorn:

"It looks like somebody laid a plate, or a shield, or, I dunno, a cartwheel or
something on the field," Blacklock said doubtfully.
"If plates, shields, or cartwheels came twenty feet across, yes, it surely
does," Birdsong agreed.
Blacklock moved to study the circle of flattened grain--which was to have been
cut today--from another angle. Not that there was anything different to see.
Perfectly circular, perfectly flat. "It'd be hard to cut grain that's been trampled
down like that, wouldn't it?"
"Yeah, really hard--like impossible, and that's a lot of grain. It isn't like
we've got so much to spare, you know." Birdsong knelt and touched the smashed
stalks, drawing her hand back quickly. "They're frozen!"
"A twenty-foot cartwheel of ice?" Blacklock speculated doubtfully. "Well,
anyway, it's too bad, but it happened. What caused it, and what do we do about it?"
"I don't know to both, but I think..." Birdsong stood and frowned at the ruined
grain. "I think we tell Lord Malcorn."
"Oh, SH-- uh, shoot! You think he's been dabbling in magic and did this?"
"Of course not! Lord Malcorn isn't careless or destructive," Birdsong stated
positively. "But he'll know what to do."
                       *** ***** *** ***** ***
Lord Malcorn, Blackie in more informal situations, was staring at another circle
of smashed crops. Hay, this time, and a couple of rabbits who had been so unlucky as
to be inside the circle when disaster fell. He knew, in a general sense, what had
caused it--when he had loosed the Dregur from the Silent Place, other things had
escaped also. From the Silent Place, and from other restraints elsewhere. He didn't
know exactly which "other things" had caused this, but he was sure that the ultimate
blame attached to him. That was the trouble with taking drastic measures to counter
drastic problems. You never knew what secondary effects might occur. Or what kind
of measures would be required to deal with the secondary problems, and what tertiary
problems might arise from THAT. He could spend the rest of his life cleaning up
after the results of releasing the Dregur.... But then, he could have spent the rest
of his life cleaning up after the invaders, too.
He sighed and turned to the farmer. "Keep your livestock and your workers out
of the fields," he directed. "There may be more of these, and it will require a
complicated bit of work to put a stop to it."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

4-0, I cannot IMAGINE how you lost, especially in that particular fashion. It
seems almost chaotic. Haven't we fought before with the opposite result?

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, Warriors of ROCANIS. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. BAD APPLES? Who?
REDHORSE is the top team these days, buddies! Practice pays for MATT HUGHES, who
pummelled DEADFALL, to pocket 17 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which,
JAVELINO was winsome, after beating NURSE ELAINE and seeing her lose 6 points. You
could cut the tension with a scimitar as ROYCE GRACIE of SADISTS-OCTAGON met the
Duelmaster. Now I can't insult ROYCE GRACIE, as he has gloriously dueled to the top.
Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) So who was the warrior
seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic
problem...
And how sociable are ROCANIS' warriors? Come, let us see. To quell some nasty
rumors, the guys in HUNTERS AND PREY are not carrying any incurable diseases. No
need to avoid 'em. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, GENERAL SURGERY
scurried away from HUNTERS AND PREY. Oh, the shame! If challenges were horses,
JONATHANNIE could open up a fast food joint! GAZELLE found himself challenged by a
warrior 22 below: TENACULUM. TENACULUM of GENERAL SURGERY kept his wits as he was
defeated by GAZELLE. Willing to win at any cost is ELEVEN BLADE, who challenged
MOUNTAIN GOAT, 8 points junior. Our sympathies, MOUNTAIN GOAT! I thought ELEVEN
BLADE showed great skill and promise when she defeated MOUNTAIN GOAT. All right, so
I slept through it! Big deal!
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Questions are
being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the arena. A certain
tavern in ROCANIS would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat!
ROCANIS, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Wanton
Troll. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir

Royce Gracie -- Let me guess, you've got nearly twice my FE in tourneys, neh? At
least I got to swing once.... -- Eleven Blade

Dumpling -- OW! I still can only barely move my arm. What kind of sauce was that
again? No way that's caramel.... -- 4-0 Prolene

Hedgehog -- How someone too stupid to understand a shortsword can learn SIX skills is
beyond me! I think somebody lied to the Gladiatorial Commission about his
intelligence. -- Chux

Suzie Sue -- You better slow down some in the first minute or lose some of that
armor, dearie. May I suggest padded leather and a steel cap instead? -- Nurse Elaine

Nurse Elaine -- You know, you could stick around and patch me up, after leaving me
bleeding on the sand. Or perhaps your nurse's license should be revoked. -- Suzie
Sue

Matt Hughes -- That went well, except that you're still alive. -- Wild Indigo

Jonathannie -- Almost had my first kill. Next time. -- Lady Mantle

I suppose the Rirorni Assassin is tough, isn't he? At least he used to be fifteen
years ago or so when he was captured. Anyway I beat him, woo hoo! -- Gazelle

You know, I suspect the rabid gopher is not tough at all. At least I beat him. --
Mountain Goat

Wormy -- Suuuuuure you do. Just keep telling yourself that. -- Mountain Goat

Applemint -- I've never liked those flavors together. Eww. -- Broken Toe

Tenaculum -- Nope, never heard of Lungermasters. How do you play it? -- Broken Toe

Deadfall -- Wow, four skills! Thanks. For a total pud you're okay. -- Javelino

Chux -- For someone not quite clever enough to use my weapon, I surprised you by
learning six skills didn't I? Ha ha ha! I am Hedgehog, hear me roar! -- Hedgehog
the Mighty

Dumpling -- Congratulations on the invitation. Will there be a going-away party? --
team Redhorse

Tenaculum -- I lay the curse of worminess on you, dammit. How DARE you defeat me? --
Wormy

Lady Mantle -- How can you be Rirorni? I am Rirorni. Not you. -- Jonathannie
P.S. So I have red hair, so sue me. It runs in my family.

Broken Toe -- If I'd realized I was going to fight you, I would have changed my
strategy to aim at your feet. But it seems I managed just fine breaking your fingers
to go with your toes. -- Applemint, not the sweet type

Javelino -- I'm quite fond of roast pig, actually. -- Deadfall

Darkfist -- Ah, the long-term view. Good, if you have the patience for it. Some
don't. -- Deadfall
