Hi! Here I am again. Still no invitation to the Isle. So I've decided to make an attitude adjustment and enjoy my home town and the title while I've still got 'em. Four teams, oh gosh. And the paying spectators are about as few and far between as the teams. I saw Khel Rojida, the arena manager, the other day and he looked pretty worried. I guess several arenas have closed this past year and he's afraid ours might be next. You know, it was a means he found to support his clan, the Tall Elks, after their herds had been stolen or run off by raiders. All the arena staff that you see around, those are Tall Elks. But they don't have much to do. This week will be my fiftieth fight. Mila said he heard a rumor somewhere that after so many fights, a warrior will get invited to the Isle even if they don't have very many skills (which I guess I don't, not fighting skills anyway). Maybe fifty is the magic number? I hope so! You know what would be sad, would be to die right before I would have gotten my invite. Well...I think my dying would be sad no matter when it happened, but that would be especially frustrating. If I were alive to BE frustrated, which I wouldn't be. Mila would be frustrated, though, and my parents, and my brothers and sisters, and Broken Toe. He's my buddy. I joined the Rocani Legion a while back. The pay isn't very high when things are quiet like now, but there's a little stipend and it is putting one of my sisters through a guild school. She's studying to be a chef. I never thought there was that much to know about cooking but she let me test some dishes she was practicing. Have you ever heard of beetle belly pate'? Neither had I. It's a Rirorni delicacy. It's indescribable. Gooshy, kinda sweet in strangely fishy way yet not exactly. Anyway, I'm riding patrol on the south side of Rocanis in the dead of night so my sister can learn to make beetle belly pate'. And I'm coming back to this arena, turn after turn, so I can travel to the Isle of the Eye and have strange mystical adventures and be one of the protectors of the land. There are four Challenger Champions and I'll probably be fighting one of them unless they all avoid me. Any of them could beat me. I'm not afraid of losing; that would be no big deal. But I'm kind of afraid of Kid Quick because of those two kills on his record. Let's all be careful out there, okay, because we don't need any more reductions in the gladiatorial population. I am Hedgehog, hear me roar! SPY REPORT Much has changed in ROCANIS since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. What's with EATS GRASS? He actually beat BAD APPLES' LARGE DOG, and walked away with 10 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at ROCANIS while they watched KUNG-FU MASTER clobber GLASS JOE. He lost 26 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Apparently ROCANIS isn't filled with as many gutless wonders as I thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster got 2 challenges this turn! Another fighter (KID QUICK 11-4-2) challenged another Duelmaster (HEDGEHOG 25-25-0). Life goes on. KID QUICK was reminded on the sands why HEDGEHOG is Duelmaster. Advice to fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting! No matter the time or place, men will always duel. How well I know the feeling of being in the most avoided team! Don't fall out of practive, PUNCH-OUT!! The bums at TOOLS OF TORMENT couldn't face the challenges from PUNCH-OUT!! No excuse for that! Fighting is a better craft than farming, BITTER VETCH, but you have to pay your dues. Being challenged by MECHANISM, 20 points above you, is dues. I have to get this off my chest. What a low dog, MECHANISM! He can't set himself up in a real match. I was sorry to see BITTER VETCH lose. MACHINE expects the easy win by going 24 points down. SHANKS PONY will find this a hard lesson! MACHINE's gonna be practicin' hard this week, after SHANKS PONY, lower ranked by far, mashed him! A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters don't accept this. The best do. ROTTEN CORE of BAD APPLES didn't know when to quit. When you've got a 6-12-0, that's a good sign. Now he's dead. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young rapscallions, take note! Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. ROCANIS is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Thank you for accepting our challenges. Machine and I both consider you a very honorable opponent. <CLICK! WHIR!> -- Mechanism Glass Joe -- <BEEP!> Goodness you're fast. I'll stay away from you for a while. I'll let you guys see how well you can do against Hedgehog. My apologies for the down challenge a few turns ago. Not that you minded I'm sure. <BOOP!> -- Machine Mechanism -- That was a valiant effort, my friend. Your style does have a notoriously difficult time against mine, though. But you're still a Challenger Champion so, if you feel up to it, you're welcome to try again. -- Hedgehog Kid Quick -- That was a monotonous fight. Poke, poke, poke, poke. Boring. -- Shanks Pony Large Dog -- Wow! Thank you! For such a short fight, we both really scored, didn't we? We teach each other very well. I always liked dogs. -- Pronghorn Privet -- Well fought. Or I should say, well struck. Do you realize there were only three blows attempted in our fight? You dodged my attack, then you made a clumsy attack which I didn't need to dodge, and then (having lulled me into a false sense of security) you whacked me in the knee with all your might. Anyway that last blow was a good one. -- Yul P.S. I'm not a golem. Everyone thinks I look unnatural just because I'm bald and have tattoos...well, the tattoos are unnatural of course, but I am naturally going bald. I just hurried the process along a bit. Large Dog -- That is a strange way to get a name: throwing an apple at something and getting named after it. Makes you wish you'd thrown an apple at a tall stallion, huh? Then the ladies would have to call you "Big Stud." -- Yul Rotten Core -- (snort) You were very, very lucky. That was my fight all the way, until the last hit. Yeah, I know the announcer didn't agree, but I WAS winning there at the end...until that one lucky blow. -- Eats Grass 7 June 2005 I am in the process of moving house, and spotlight writing for the next two months will be very hit-and-miss. -- the Scribe 27 June 2005 ATTENTION ALL YOU ALLIANCE-TYPE PEOPLE: For the purposes of tourney newsletter alliance listings (when I am able to do them), you may only be listed in ONE alliance. In other words, you have to choose! If you are a part of Englebert's Alliance and Englebert's Alliance is "part" of Ruthrauf's Alliance, I will list you EITHER as part of Englebert's Alliance OR as part of Ruthrauf's Alliance, NOT both. The default would be the top-level alliance, Ruthrauf's, in this example. If you'd rather be listed separately, let me know and I will do so, but that will be the only listing you get. -- The Saint, keeper of ever- more-complicated lists 29 Jun 2005 The Company of Brothers (TCB) welcomes two new members to our alliance...Liam the Goth and Buddy Lee. We have no doubt that they will prove to be assets to our alliance and the general dueling community. -- Baphomet, co-founder, T.C.B. LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS KID QUICK was unbelievably bested by HEDGEHOG in a 3 minute Challenge Title fight. MECHANISM savagely defeated BITTER VETCH in a 1 minute veteran's Challenge melee. MACHINE was devastated by SHANKS PONY in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge contest. GLASS JOE was defeated by KUNG-FU MASTER in a crowd pleasing 2 minute bloody match. PRIVET vanquished YUL in a 1 minute mismatched fight. ROTTEN CORE was killed by PRONGHRON in a 1 minute brawl. PIEFACE was handily defeated by RABID GOPHER in a 1 minute uneven fight. LARGE DOG was vanquished by EATS GRASS in a 3 minute uneven duel.
