Rocanis:

Uncle Wolf looked at the swirling knots of shamans, listened to the agitated and
increasingly strident babble of argument, and shook his head. "That's torn it," he
repeated.
"But they must see that what Bluesnake has proposed is the same thing he told
them you would do--that HE be the one to hold the Sword and decide on its use," Ghost
Dancer protested.
"Of course they don't see it!" The speaker was Rain Caller of the Haimgedai,
the oldest shaman present. "Bluesnake is appealing to their emotions, not their
minds. If they have any minds," he added bitterly. "It was like this before, when
the Great Khan said he would make all the tribes great and lead them to trample
Alastari under their horses' hooves. Some tribes were completely destroyed in that
war. Many will never be so strong as they once were. Where are the Tilvagedai
today, or the Skaevalgedai?"
"We cannot go back and change the past," Wolf said. His tone was so sharp that
Ghost Dancer wondered if that had been suggested to him at some point. "We can only
learn from it."
Rain Caller glared at him from under snow-white brows. "Easy to say, hard to
do. What is your plan?"
Wolf turned to scan the whole assembly of shamans before speaking. Then he
shrugged. "If I thought we could kill Bluesnake, here and now, I would attempt it.
At this moment, he is a greater enemy to us than Volundagh and the Sword."
"The others wouldn't stand for--" the old man began.
"Which is why I'm not doing it." Wolf glanced at the group around the Saarda
again, and his lip curled into a sneer worthy of his totem animal. "Did you think I
held off out of fear of Bluesnake?"
Rain Caller snorted. "None think that who know what happened at the Buffalo
Gate." Then he sighed and added, "But many of the young men do NOT know of that."
Wolf swept that away with a gesture and turned to his younger companion. "Go
find Redfox, Ghost Dancer. Bring him to me here."
Ghost Dancer went, but reluctantly. He had never heard of a Buffalo Gate, and
he had hoped that one or the other would tell that story. How could he learn if such
information was not passed along?

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Hi!

Well, I don't think I've been up here before...looks like everyone is going to
get their turn though. We've got ourselves a fairly small club here. But you know,
with the economy of Rocanis thriving, and the shamans convention in town, and
tourists coming to see our historic battlegrounds, we do get some decent ticket sales
to our arena. So the arena manager has asked me to pass along his request that
everyone make an effort to put on a really good show. Also, if anyone is willing to
fight twice, once in a disguise, please contact Khel Rojida.
Speaking of which, what is everyone wearing for the Festival of the Dead? For
those who are new to the area, we all dress up in costumes and form a conga line and
dance up to Spirit Ridge, where we put flowers and cookies on all the burial
platforms. I'm going to take a hint from my name and go as a horned beast, I don't
know about an antelope but something like that.
As Yul noted, everyone in the arena is simultaneously on the most and the least
popular lists, and that IS grounds for a party. Let's have a costume-making party!
What is this shamans' convention all about, anyway? I went over there but they
wouldn't talk to me. Anybody know?

                                                                    Pronghorn

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail and well met warriors of ROCANIS! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. CONTRABAND caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested PRIVET and was awarded 19 points
in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, CONTRABAND put down PRIVET,
causing him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. Cold and lifeless,
former Duelmaster PRONGHRON will fight no more! WISHLIST has slain her! Heed this!
A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall
perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report.
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes
