DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hi!
Well...here I am, yup. I don't know what to say. I've never been the
Duelmaster before. I wish Hedgehog was here, she always had something to say.
I got my name because I run fast, and I once outran a horse. It was a slow
horse, an old and very pregnant mare in fact. Nowadays, I have a horse (a long-
legged gelding) and I generally ride if I want to go a long way.
If anyone wants to know, Hedgehog did go to the Isle. She took the immortality
and the land grant, and came back and built a cabin south of Rocanis. She's raising
sheep. Sheep! This is cattle country. I don't know what the world is coming to.
But she sent me a nice wool poncho that really feels good on these chilly mornings,
so I can't really be mad at her.
Like most of my team, I'm in the Rocani Legion. The pay is better than
gladiating, though not by much. I've got the 8 pm to 2 am town patrol on weekends,
so if any of you gets drunk and disorderly, I'll be the one you meet. Just don't
throw up on my new poncho, okay?
I guess I'll be matched against Bitter Vetch this time around, unless he gets
challenged by somebody. I hope he doesn't. I don't want to fight a stand-in.
They're old Rirorni prisoners and I feel sorry for them.
(taking a deep breath) Smells like snow. It's going to be a long, cold winter.

Well, what are you looking at, ROCANIS? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, BAD APPLES, since REDHORSE
took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course, we're all
terribly impressed to see TOE win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
CHIP beat JONNA THANE and JONNA THANE lost 5 points. You're breakin' my heart. And
if variety is the spice of life, ROCANIS may be getting bland, as SHANKS PONY stays
top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you
this? You want to know what's new, don't you, ROCANIS?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman.
Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and
gone, and get to see if their team cared. We're all going to die in the end, so why
worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Just wait 'till next time I show up
