Rocanis:

Windrider, young shaman of the Vonsogedai, drifted over to join Uncle Wolf and
Rain Caller. "Bluesnake has many ideas," he said abruptly. "He speaks of a 'group
of shamans' using the Black Sword to 'restore the glory' of all the Rirorni. Many
listen to him, and the young warriors will follow him beyond a doubt--they want to
restore glories and have a chance to make their own names as warriors. But...I do
not see how any sword can be wielded by more than one man at a time."
"You are correct," Wolf said. "Only one may use the sword at any time, and
which one that is...the sword will choose."
"There will be struggles between the tribes, and between all the men of the
tribe that has the sword."
"Of course." Rain Caller of the Haimgedai sighed, the chimes on his cloak
tinkling. "It is, after all, a sword of Mytori, and that dark god desires strife
above all things. See how there is division and anger already," he gestured toward
the larger group of shamans around Bluesnake, "and we don't even HAVE the sword
here!"
After studying the other group for a moment, Wolf said, "They will come to blows
on it, and soon. But Bluesnake will carry his point. He is a strong shaman."
"The proper use of his strength is to guard the Saargedai first and the other
tribes if he can. Stirring up trouble will not do that," Windrider said.
"It is possible Bluesnake believes he is doing this," Wolf said.
"You are more charitable than I am, Wolf!" Rain Caller snapped. "Bluesnake's
first thought is to increase his OWN power, a late second is the good of his tribe,
and the Rirorni as a whole are very far behind that. He has always been greedy for
power."
"I thought that," Windrider admitted. "But I thought it might have been simple
jealousy. He is more powerful, more feared than I am--"
"A good shaman is respected, but not feared," Rain Caller said. "You are doing
well for one so young."
Windrider flushed with pleasure but brushed the compliment aside. "But what can
he do without having the sword? And what can WE do to prevent him getting it, and to
keep it from tearing the tribes apart?"
"There are two tasks immediately before us," Wolf said slowly. "Perhaps three.
First, to watch Bluesnake and be sure that he does not acquire the Black Sword.
Second, to find that sword--what to do with it afterward is a different question.
And third, perhaps, is to shield the tribes from the strife that the simple knowledge
of the sword's existence may cause."
"That last is impossible," Rain Caller said at once. "There are too many people
here, all of them knowing of the sword's existence and that it may have been found.
It would be impossible to keep them all silent on this. As regards the other two,"
he grimaced, for he was a very old man, and tired, "that will be hard work!"
"But it can be done," Wolf said. He glanced around, spotted Ghost Dancer
approaching with Redfox, and smiled. "With the right tools."

Redfox groaned inwardly. Uncle Wolf was smiling. He knew that particular
smile, very much a wolf's grin. It meant trouble coming. And the old man was aiming
that smile at HIM.
"I have a job for, Redfox!"
Remembering previous jobs, the gladiator stiffened. "If it means going through
Spirit Gates--"
"No, I shouldn't think so. A very straight-forward business, this is. Simple,
too! A scouting job. You'll have no problems with it. Hmm, but you might want to
recruit a couple other gladiators, just for the company...."

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Hey everybody, watch out for IN HIDING, who flew up 20 points in the
rankings after mashing RIVER REED like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know,
some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. PIEFACE was overcame by CHIP and
drops 11 points. Well, everybody's pal ZIPPER moved its record to 12-0-1 by
defeating WISHLIST in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 17 recognition points.
Advice to bashers--never force anything, just get a bigger halberd!
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ROCANIS arena. And hey,
kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid BAD APPLES, please raise you hand. Wow. Does
ROCANIS really have that many liars? And you guys like to boo me? Well, unsling
your rasberries, cause RESCUE RANGERS beats feet every time BAD APPLES smiles at
them. Try farming, eh? And who is this LARGE DOG you ask, with 44 points and a
5-29-0 record. Ooh, the tales I could tell!
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Here's some advice: warriors
with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, that wasn't too bad; Alarond told me that the people in ROCANIS have no
sense of humor. Or maybe that they were senseless. Well, there goes another Spy
Report. Good luck in next week's fights. Hasta la bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat
it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

Chip -- Bah! Scum! -- Eats Grass

Privet -- Good try. And I did get offered some land, but it wasn't riverfront. It
was a couple of dry acres down near the Trocaran border. Meh. -- Shanks Pony
P.S. So, I think I'll adventure instead. Hey Uncle Wolf!

Pieface -- You're not doing my record any good. -- Yul

Bent -- Ouch! This gladiator stuff hurts! -- Gray Colt

Well, I beat the Mage's Apprentice but they tell me she doesn't read the newsletters.
It was a good thing the rules forbid spellcasting! -- River Reed

Temb -- Argh! You Shews, you walk all over everybody! -- Large Dog
P.S. Those skills were all I HAD! You didn't have to learn them all at once, did
you? Cheese.

Shanks Pony -- My comfort is, you won't have a chance to do that to me ever again. --
Privet, searching that cloud diligently for any shred or nugget of a silver lining
P.S. AND you have to go on an adventure that will probably be uncomfortable and
definitely dangerous. So there!

Yul -- I just, um, it was a cough. (smothered snicker) I really, wasn't laughing at
you! No, I wasn't! Honest. I was just, um, I was remembering a joke I'd heard last
night. -- Pieface
P.S. And I coughed, too.

Trocaran Deserter, eh? I thing I should have been allowed to bury him in the sand.
He is very two-dimensional, after all, so he wouldn't be making lumps. -- Jonna Thane
P.S. I was GOING to say, if I bury him, I'll know where he is and *I* won't trip,
but it would be just LIKE him to swim along under the sand, like a ray-fish, sort of,
and get somewhere else. And, for that matter, I wouldn't put it PAST him to wait
till someone is standing firmly on him and then RIPPLE. So, okay, maybe better not
to bury him in the sand. At least, not the sand in the ARENA. There must be some
other sand around. Anybody got any cats?

Shanks Pony -- Favorites? I have favorites? Why doesn't anybody TELL me these
thing? -- Bitter Vetch
P.S. "All my lord protector money"? It is to laugh.
