Shanks Pony stared after it, amazed by the suddenness of the attack, by the bird, by its departure. "That dry stream we just crossed," Redfox said urgently, "back to it and get down next to the bank. The higher you are above the ground, the easier a target you make." He suited his actions to his words, racing back to the shallow gully and throwing himself down into it. The others followed quickly, and barely in time, as the war-bird made another dive. Shanks Pony pressed himself against the ground, hearing the wind whistle through the bird's steely feathers. A cloud of arrows descending might sound like that--just before men started dying. It screamed again, and he saw its shadow veer and waver. "It can't maneuver near the ground," Barudai noted. "If we can bait it into sword range--" "Arrows," Ghost Dancer answered firmly. "Shoot it at a distance, that's what arrows are FOR." "If an arrow will pierce it, I'll be surprised," Redfox said. Shanks Pony pressed himself toward a low, barely a foot high, ridge of sand in the stream bed and risked a glance upward. The war-bird was high again, circling for another dive. Even so, how could the other warriors speak so calmly? He feared he might choke on his excitement. Not fear, the bird was too alien to fear now. Later, he was sure he'd be terrified at the memory. If he survived. And there were things to be done, if they could figure out what. He looked around for his companions. Each of them had a weapon in hand. How did they do that, in the heat of leaping off their horses and seeking cover? Barudai just had his sword, but Ghost Dancer must have seized his bow and quiver even as he dismounted, and Redfox actually had a spear! Pony managed to get his own sword out and wished for his shield. Even a small shield would be good to have right now. "We should separate," Barudai said. "It can't get all of us." "It probably could get us all," Redfox countered. "We stay together, which will draw the bird to us, and then kill it." He paused, looking upward. "Not back to back, but close. Whoever is controlling that bird is not making best use of its abilities." "Controlling?" Pony asked. "You think it's a golem or a sending?" "No." That was Ghost Dancer. "I would have sensed that. But it might be mind- controlled." Pony watched it circle and begin another dive toward them. It looked like it was coming straight at HIM, but that was probably just his imagination. He hoped it was just his imagination. "What's the difference?" "A golem," the young shaman said, fitting an arrow to the string of his bow, "is a thing, a tool, made of matter and art. It may be created with a brain of a sort--" "Golems in the arena have brains," the young gladiator protested. "And no 'of a sort' about them." "True, but they also have...souls. Human souls, often enough. Sometimes demons. They are an abomination. Also, they can't always be controlled. That's what happens when something has a soul, it starts thinking for itself. Thinking of its own best interest." He was tracking the bird with his arrow, pivoting in place. "A sending is a creation wholly of magic and spirit and has no physical substance--" "A sending couldn't hurt us, then?" "It could kill anyone it was sent after," Ghost Dancer corrected. "A sending is power. If it's a pure spell," he shrugged, "then the magician who sends it has about as much control as I have over this arrow." The war-bird had steadied in its course, and he finished drawing his bow and released the arrow, immediately whipping another into place. "And a mind-controlled bird is a real bird, however unnatural its breeding may have been," Redfox said. "The magician or shaman imposes his will on it. If he's smart, he just forces a purpose on the creature and lets it pursue that purpose with its own skill." Pony couldn't be sure, but he thought the first arrow hit the bird's chest to one side and glanced off. Scary thought. Would a sword glance off, too? "But this magician was NOT smart," Barudai finished as Ghost Dancer shot again. "A bird that had chosen us as prey would be more dangerous than a man trying to use a bird's assets. Especially a man who has never watched a hawk hunting. Ha!" The second arrow hit and lodged somewhere in the bird's chest. It wobbled in flight but kept coming. "A man with hunting skills would have dived the bird out of the sun," Redfox agreed. He had a two-handed grip on his spear and was pivoting to follow the bird's course, which was toward Barudai. The scout stood firm, waiting. Pony was impressed. He didn't know whether he himself would be able to stand so and await the diving predator. Ghost Dancer fired once more, at close range. Pony could see the arrow hit under a wing, in what would be the armpit on a man. The head sank in, but not far. Still, the force of the blow knocked the bird off its course, and it skittered through the air, falling now as much as swooping downward under control. Redfox was on it with his spear, swinging it around to use the butt as a club. Barudai jumped forward with his sword, and with a start, Pony tightened his grip and did likewise. It was like hacking at a stone. Attempts to cut off the war-bird's head, or a wing or taloned foot, were futile. Its feathers were stronger than the best armor scales. At one point it managed to seize the tip of Barudai's blade in its beak and bite through the steel. Redfox battered it with the butt of the spear and broke or dislocated one wing. "Bash it with rocks," he suggested, panting. "Bury it under a cairn of rocks," Ghost Dancer added. "We may not be able to kill it, but this is a creature of the air, and if we can seal it under earth and stone, that may be enough to stop it." "It will have to be!" Barudai said. "We can do nothing if this lives and follows us." "There's a sort of pit over that way," Pony said, pointing, "and if we want to bury it...." "Good idea." Redfox shifted around the bird until his blows were coming from the other side and he could drive it across the ground toward the pit. Barudai laid aside his damaged sword and hurried to assemble stones beside the pit; Pony went to help him. It seemed to take hours to force the bird into the pit and bury it. Ghost Dancer was standing over the cairn muttering and making invisible marks on the upper stones with his fingers. Pony was surprised, afterward, to glance at the sun and see that no more than an hour had passed. Their horses, he saw, had not gone far; they were visible a mile down the shallow valley. And he was the youngest and least experienced member of the group, which meant going after their mounts was his job. He sighed. "I'll get the horses," he said, and started walking. SPY REPORT I can't believe the violence in ROCANIS! I still haven't told Mom I'm writing Spyreports. She'd have a cow! Well, here we go... Too bad, RESCUE RANGERS, but GET was just too good to be stopped. MVP award for MS STALGIA? WENSINWASIN MI's proud of her after beating WINDSWEPT and getting 19 points. Talk about yer major upsets! ZANDER's match with TREEKILLER cost him a loss of 8 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! ZIPPER stopped EATS GRASS dead in his tracks! Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me! I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just wing this stuff. The warriors of BAD APPLES must be getting lonely. They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Is there some deep dark secret why RESCUE RANGERS' been avoiding BAD APPLES so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Can BAD APPLES' TREEKILLER be more popular than me? He was challenged the most, but is that really the same? Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give it a break? What a bummer! PIEFACE got wasted by DALE! But with a 12-16-0, I guess BAD APPLES aren't too bummed. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do? I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be a famous Spyreporter? I gotta leave. ROCANIS is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much! Its been really albendranius! The Mordanti Olympics shall be held in the Mordant arena (DM-1) from May 1st (T544) through Oct 30 (T557). There will be a 'registration period' lasting until T543, where teams will be allowed to register by activating in Mordant and declaring their participation in the personals. Rules will be posted in the Mordant arena (DM-1) newsletter no later than T543, but shall be available online before then. An announcement will be made as to where they will be posted.
