The three men with him were steady and experienced. They knew what to do, and they did it. He looked around to locate the best cover from which to fight the ambushers. That would probably be the-- Shierah! They had turned their horses and where charging straight at the ambushers! Madness. But they were his comrades, and he could be mad, too, if that's what was called for. He turned his horse also, only half a stride behind the others, although the hair stood straight up on the back of his neck at the thought of riding into a storm of arrows. The fact that he was now a Lord Protector and could be resurrected was not at all comforting. The willows were close. They must have been nearly within bow-range when they started the charge, and they were surely within that range by now. Where were the arrows? He hated waiting for unpleasant things to happen. There WERE arrows, a few. Not the solid wall of them he expected, and they missed. They were aimed, he realized, at where he and his companions would have been if they hadn't turned and charged. Which made him feel a little better about it; Redfox and Ghost Dancer and Barudai weren't madmen after all. His hand went to his bowcase, but he didn't draw it out. No clear targets, and the willows might be thin, but they'd deflect arrows well enough. His horse jumped over a fallen log, through a fringe of young willows, and landed on a sandbank, lurched and slipped to regain its footing, and stumbled, throwing him forward over its shoulder. He rolled when he landed and came to his feet, surprised to find his sword in his hand. When had he drawn it? How had he managed not to cut himself when he fell? No time to ponder those questions. A Rirorni, a skinny man with some gray in his hair and patches on his clothes, came at him with a yell. He was pathetic. A two-year-old could have taken his sword away from him. It was an embarrassment to all Rirorni that this fellow was one of them. Shanks parried his first blow easily and twisted his own sword to disarm the wretch. The man hardly seemed to notice, just kept coming, kept yelling. His eyes were fixed straight ahead, so wide open that white showed all around the irises, and there was foam on his lips. He threw himself at Shanks Pony, who was four inches taller and probably fifty pounds heavier and thirty years younger, grappling and biting. He was insane. Could it be rabies? Sometimes Rirorni caught that, if they were hungry enough to fight coyotes for carrion, and Shierah knew this one looked that hungry. Shanks got a hand on the man's throat to hold him at a safe distance, then hit him on the head with the hilt of his sword. It went against the grain to kill an old, unarmed man, but if he was rabid...people never recovered from that. They just died. Shanks tied the man's hands and feet with a thong (Rirorni always carried thongs, they were small and light-weight, and you never knew when you might need them) and looked around for his companions. He couldn't see them, couldn't hear anything but the wind in the willows. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 539): DJESEE of THE MONGOLOIDS (Otis the Drunk, mgr.) Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team ARNIE'S ARMY was unseated this week as GET moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-0-0 record for the round. IT caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested EATS GRASS and was awarded 17 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, WINDSWEPT put down THORN, causing her to lose 15 points of recognition in the process. This time victory fell to the grasp of the usurper. All hail TOE, Duelmaster of ROCANIS! Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out! I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in ROCANIS these days is ARNIE'S ARMY. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding ARNIE'S ARMY. Indeed it was ELEVENTH HOUR. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. YUL take warning! You have more than a few enemies in ROCANIS. I cannot but express pride for the fearlessness of NIKALA who cast caution to the winds and challenged TOE, a fighter 26 points higher. 4 points of newly earned recognition and a dose of my admiration is what NIKALA must now weigh against the defeat which resulted. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! I have seen warriors die in youth. I have seen men cut down in their prime. This week RESCUE RANGERS must mourn the loss of 11-6-1 CHIP to ROCANIS. I must report the passing of LARGE DOG, veteran of many duels. 7-34-0 final record His was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites. Dark alleys may hide both secrets and assassins. In the arena there is only the brightness of steel. Keep vigil always! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TOE 3896 12 1 1 105 GET (419) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DALE 3112 13 2 2 104 RESCUE RANGERS (338) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -WISHLIST 3816 9 9 2 90 YIELD (405) -CONTRABAND 3827 10 3 3 85 YIELD (405) NIKALA 3443 8 7 0 80 ELEVENTH HOUR (372) IT 3900 6 1 0 79 GET (419) EATS GRASS 3853 17 21 0 72 REDHORSE (207) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BENT 3908 8 3 0 66 GET (419) -GLUTAMIC 3790 5 0 1 66 ARNIE'S ARMY (404) YUL 3868 15 18 0 63 REDHORSE (207) -IN HIDING 3902 4 0 1 61 YIELD (405) -SILICA 3773 4 1 0 58 ARNIE'S ARMY (404) MICHELLE 3458 8 7 1 57 ELEVENTH HOUR (372) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TEMB 3907 7 4 1 49 RESCUE RANGERS (338) -L. When you submit something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get a receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all. If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy writing! -- Ed. 28 March 2006 We of the Desolate Empire Alliance want to welcome two managers to our fold. Kon of the Empire Rising, and Osiris! May they be blessed with the blood of their enemies, and give no quarter in War! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire 11 April 2006 To all those lookin' for some easy pickins: I, Elfwine, manager of The Shallowship, the most feared team in all of Jhelum, invite all who seek wide open spaces for pubs and other such establishments of limited debauchery, to visit this deserted city and help me clear up some of the dust. I'm just about ready to have my guys face off against each other to get some new action. Guess I'd better join a tournament or something...hmmmm, there's a thought.
