The voice emerged from darkness and cold wind, and it seemed to echo out of a deep cave. At the same time, so far as time had a meaning here, a form condensed in front of Uncle Wolf. Black and without visible details, with eyes as white as the full moon and white antlers gleaming in the light of a moon that did not shine here. Where another kind of being would move in the aura of its own warmth and scent, this one exuded awe and dread. Though he had never met this Great One personally before, Wolf knew who it was. He bowed low. "I have been called and sent," he said. "I go where I am commanded." Amusement. "That must be a first for you." "Perhaps. I do not recall." He closed his mouth and waited. To be the first to speak of his mission here would be taken as a weakness. It would be a weakness, the mortal flaw of impatience. More amusement. Not something so ordinary as a laugh, but a scent of response that in a human would be laughter. Amusement passed. "You have been invoked to deal with the Soul-Stealer," the Horned Hunter said. "That Word has come to Us," it added ambiguously. "We have thought to Hunt this rash mortal Ourselves." "If You unleashed your full power on Alastari at this time, You might unmake it." "True. What of that? For all within the Mortal Lands, every beginning comes at last to an ending. It may be that now is the ending for Alastari." "And it may not be so. One said to me once that endings should not be hastened but allowed to arrive in their own times. And also that the ending of something so large and deep-rooted as Alastari is... complicated. Not for one such as myself to trifle with." Wolf squinted at the dark shape and decided that nothing but the most brutal honesty would serve him here. "It is not for one such as You to trifle here, either." Anger, insulted dignity. Amusement again. "Truth." A silence that seemed long. "So be it. The Night Riders shall aid you, they shall even follow your directions, within reason. We shall send Words to them, making it so." Wolf deemed it prudent to bow again, and to keep silent. He did not fancy working with the Night Riders, but they were "better" than the Great Hunt. And they would be well able to sniff out necromancers wherever such might hide. He saw now that it was to secure this aid that he had been sent to the Horned Hunter. Which he had now done, and more easily than expected. He wanted to leave, to return to the Mortal World and get on with it, but he dared not until the Hunter gave permission. "We are minded to... ask a boon in return," the Hunter said. Light from an invisible moon glinted on its horns as the great head turned to look off to the side. Wolf felt that his skin tightened all over with alertness and... yes, fear, too. "Ask, though little is within my power compared to yours." "We stand very near to the border between Matter and Spirit," the Hunter said, "as do you. But on opposite sides. The circumstances which permit Us to reach across that border are not common, they do not pertain at this time. But We can reach you." A hand materialized between the two of them, with a square of fluttering cloth laid across its palm and a silver arm-ring lying on the cloth. "Take this to the Silent Place near the Ancient City, that which mortals now call Zuwayza, and give it into the keeping of One you will find there. That One will then release the Night Riders to your commands." Wolf would sooner have touched a scorpion than that arm-ring, but there seemed to be no alternative here. He forced his unwilling hands to reach out and grip the corners of the cloth, lifting the ring without touching it. "I shall do this if I can," he said. SPY REPORT Greetings, Warriors of ROCANIS. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Practice pays for SAGE, who pummelled TEMB, to pocket 25 points. Win some, lose some. Speaking of which, SAGE was winsome, after beating TEMB and seeing him lose 13 points. BACK found out that ROCANIS isn't a democracy. You've gotta be the best to be Duelmaster here! So who was the warrior seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic problem... My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS, alone and unchallenged. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, RESCUE RANGERS scurried away from KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS. Oh, the shame! Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! How true is BLOOD BROTHERS' mettle? Just one week remains for the avenging of OCELOT's death. Oh hard! that to strike a flame, the match itself must needs be wasting! Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Do not despair! I shall return!-- Novgorodny Vir DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME LELLDORIN 2409 10 7 1 105 KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS (22) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SAGE 4025 7 1 0 84 KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS (22) BACK 3949 8 10 0 74 GET (419) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME TEMB 3907 17 10 1 66 RESCUE RANGERS (338) CENTURION 4024 7 1 0 58 KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS (22) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME PREATORIAN 4005 7 6 0 55 KNIGHTS OF ROCANIS (22) HAWTHORN 3991 14 11 1 54 BAD APPLES (187) -ZIPPER 3947 5 3 1 51 RESCUE RANGERS (338) GAFFER SMITH 4028 5 0 0 47 BAD APPLES (187) MALUS S'PROUT 3993 7 14 1 43 BAD APPLES (187) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME WOODWORM 4003 6 8 2 32 BAD APPLES (187) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
