Manley General Pol sat in Khel Rojida's office; Rocanis' arena manager. Under normal circumstances, Pol wouldn't have even bothered answering the summons and if it was important, Khel could come to him. However, the Free Blade Merchant Guild had engineered his induction into an inactive stable, Skull Squadron and arranged that he would match up with the previous Duelmaster. His subsequent defeat of Swytai on the sands earned him the title. Pol assumed this was a formal "congratulations" for him winning the throne. The interior room looked like a residence. Lining a shelf along one wall was a wide variety of goblets and mugs that must have come from every city in Alastari. Three strategically placed cases displayed faded ribbons and plaques, so a guest could easily see the owner's accomplishments. A fireplace provided heat. In the center of the room was a large table with parchments scattered all over it, and more on the shelves behind it. The door opened and an older, well-dressed Rocani entered. He was bald except for a fringe of short grayish hair on the sides and back of his head, and a neatly trimmed beard. He wore a full-length dusty beige tunic with upturned oversized cuffs and loose-fitting, oversized linen trousers with a gold sash around his waist. "General Pol, on behalf of the Gladiatorial Commission, congratulations on becoming Duelmaster of Rocanis," Khel said as he sat down behind his desk. Pol nodded in appreciation. "Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, would you be so inclined to tell me what game you are playing?" Pol sat back in his seat and stroked his mustache down to his chin. He liked the direct nature of Khel, something the Rirorni respected. However, he was not inclined to tell Khel anything. "I think it is obvious what game I'm playing." Khel narrowed his eyes and leaned back in his chair in anticipation. "Duelmasters." "So, General, we are to dance then," Khel said, as he clasped his hands and leaned against his desk. "I have a dilemma of determining exactly how a Rirorni warlord rides into Rocanis, walks into my arena, and 'randomly' matches up against the Duelmaster, and defeats him on the sands?" "I believe it is every gladiator's ambition to become the Duelmaster. Is there something out of place regarding my gladiatorial submission?" Pol asked. Khel grabbed several sheets of paper and quickly sorted through them, before placing them back on the desk. "No, everything is perfect, perfect. What is 'out of place' is that no one's paper work is ever perfect." "There's a first for everything," Pol commented. "Perhaps, but you are causing me problems, General. I've already received a formal protest from Swytai about your last duel." "It sounds like that is your problem." "No, I can ignore the protest, as her paper work wasn't filled out perfectly. However, I now have the task of determining what do with you," Khel replied. "I do not take threats lightly," Pol said bracing his hands on his knees. "No, I'm above that," Khel said and then pushed an envelope towards him. "I'm not for sale and you can't get rid of me." "Oh, I think someone else has already determined your price and I can get rid of you," Khel said as his eyes moved from Pol back to the envelope. Pol snatched the envelope from Khel's desk. It was heavy with a red, wax seal with the imprint of a crooked wand. As Pol began to open the letter, Khel began reciting, "From the Gladiatorial Commission I bring you greetings. Know that it is in praise of your courage and in recognition of your proven skill at arms...." Pol threw the paper down and cut him off. "You giving me an invite to the Isle of the Eye? I can't believe you're making a Rirorni warlord an Alastarian Lord Protector?" "There's a first for everything," Khel said, using his own words against him. "Shelia Greywand has already been informed of your arrival to the Isle of the Eye." "You can't do this!" "I already have. This is for notification purposes only. By right, you'll have one more fight in the city, but then you are gone General Pol. I would suggest you rehearse whatever story you want to tell your benefactors. I have a feeling they will not be pleased." Pol wanted to leap across the desk and strangle Khel, but as a career soldier he knew he'd been outmaneuvered. There was nothing he could do! He then calmed himself. There was nothing he could do but take all the gold the Free Blade Merchant Guild gave him and ride back to his men on the Rirorni plains. He then smiled at Khel, stroked his mustache, and then left his office. Later that evening-- Khel was working late into the night when there was a light rapping on his door. Considering his earlier encounter with the Rirorni general, he slowly reached for his short sword he kept under his desk. Rising, an envelope slid under the door's crack. Khel moved for the entrance and opened it. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw a figure turn around the corner of a building, casting a shadow of a woman's silhouette. Looking down, it was a turn sheet for a warrior, filled out perfectly in the same neat handwriting he'd seen before. It was the next strategy sheet for General Pol. What caught his eye was whom General Pol would be challenging the next turn--the Dark Arena. Khel thought to himself, it seems I'm not the only one done with General Pol. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. It is I, your Khan--(indistinct grumbling in the background). It is I, your Duelmaster, General Pol! I want to congratulate Swytai on a well-fought duel. It was indeed a great honor giving her the first of many scars along her gladiator path. I'm looking forward to my next fight on the sands against a worthy Rocani warrior. However, if I somehow lose the title and the next Duelmaster doesn't write a column, I will personally start down challenging their stable's warriors and bash them like a peg in the dirt with my new found favorite great sword, until they do. Be warned! It is good to see Men of Steel still in the arena. I look forward to crossing swords on the sands. In addition, welcome Draco and the Get stable back to Rocanis. Since there has been a change in the title, it is almost time for the great Duelmaster feast and everyone is invited. Mylar's is supplying the mead and my men have hunted enough meat to feed the entire city. I've been told the wild pigs are already roasting for the evening. There will be plenty of bacon to carry onto breakfast the next day. Love that bacon! I am being told that Khel Rojida is requesting an audience, so I will leave my fellow gladiators with some Rirorni words of wisdom. Remember, each defeat in the arena is only a delay on the long road to becoming the Great Khan (more indistinct grumbling in the background) Duelmaster of Rocanis! May your opponent always use honor on the sands, while you use every means possible to win! Humbly, General Pol of Skull Squadron Duelmaster SPY REPORT It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. We now have a new top team for all of you guys to dogpile on. MEDAL OF HONOR A11 now holds the crown and they are betting they can keep it. Coming up with a solid 2-1-1 outing, SKULL SQUADRON has advanced 3 places in the rankings. MEDAL OF HONOR A11 is no joke as it posted a 3-1-0 week advancing from 3rd place to 1st place. Hey everybody, watch out for PANCAKES, who flew up 20 points in the rankings after mashing HOUSTON FARMER like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. ELIN GALLIO lost to SERGEANT 6 and drops 10 points. Unlike most arenas, GENERAL POL managed to get his challenge off against the 0-0-0 ROKORI KLEE. Well, everybody's pal GENERAL POL moved his record to 21-15-1 by defeating ROKORI KLEE in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 2 recognition points. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ROCANIS arena. And hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid MEN OF STEEL, please raise you hand. Wow. Does ROCANIS really have that many liars? For those of you who like math, try this one: MEN OF STEEL + Weapons That go Boom = GET + Avoid City. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, HOUSTON FARMER would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't want to win. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! GENERAL POL defied all odds and slew ROKORI KLEE in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as ROKORI KLEE's meat is notoriously tough. Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. Well, there's the manager of the ROCANIS giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Its been fun, and I'm sure you enjoyed it (boos). Now that I've got you worked up for Snide Clemens, I'll be leaving-- The Unknown Spymaster DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME STEEL WEAVER 3468 10 7 0 100 SKULL SQUADRON (28) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SWYTAI 4414 11 1 0 98 GRIZZLED VETERANS (457) JIMMY THE HAND 4419 14 21 3 91 MEN OF STEEL (131) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -THE SCYTHE 4456 9 1 0 90 SATAN'S BLADES (460) NEWTON PYNE 4431 14 18 1 83 MIDDLE WAY 20 (435) SERGEANT 2 4407 19 15 1 75 MEDAL OF HONOR A11 (456) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SERGEANT 6 4498 6 3 0 64 MEDAL OF HONOR A11 (456) -MACROS THE BLACK 4492 6 1 1 61 MEN OF STEEL (131) BLACK STEEL 3469 10 7 0 57 SKULL SQUADRON (28) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SERGEANT 5 4497 7 2 0 50 MEDAL OF HONOR A11 (456) PANCAKES 4241 3 0 0 50 GET (419) HOUSTON FARMER 4428 6 28 1 47 MIDDLE WAY 20 (435) SERGEANT 5 4490 5 6 1 45 MEDAL OF HONOR A11 (456) ELIN GALLIO 4491 9 5 0 41 MIDDLE WAY 20 (435) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GILBERT IRDAN 4541 4 2 1 26 MIDDLE WAY 20 (435) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME IOTA DRACONIS 4546 1 1 0 17 DRACO (465) -ONE EYE 3578 1 1 0 15 SKULL SQUADRON (28) ISAM KORL 4536 1 6 1 10 MIDDLE WAY 20 (435) KASPAR 4538 2 2 0 8 MEN OF STEEL (131) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
