TEAM SPOTLIGHT
[Events prior to last turn.]
"Make sure the straps on my armor are pulled tight. Tighter!" Mytori Priest of
Skull Squadron yelled out over the roar of the arena crowd, as Rao pulled on the
leather and buckled it into place.
The Mytori Priest paced back and forth, waiting for his match in the arena
tunnel.
Rao said, "The Gladiatorial Commission is looking into why your Blood Feuds
didn't go through. I'm sure you'll be facing Locky on the sands this turn."
The Mytori Priest glanced at him for a moment and then continued his pacing. He
listened to the sounds of weapons clashing from the bout in the arena, but he didn't
care who was fighting. He concentrated on his fight next. Come on, come on! Finish!
A final cheer arose from the stands. The current match was over.
Khel Rojida called out. "For our next match we have something a little more
exciting."
The audience responded with jovial applause.
Khel continued, "Our next two champions are known to all. Both have impressive
records and are worthy to be called gladiators of Rocanis. This shall be the title
fight of the evening. Our first warrior is the current Duelmaster of Rocanis. His 9-1-
0 record is almost unheard of in all the games. Many fear him and his name spreads
dread throughout the hearts of all of Rocanis' gladiatorial stables. It's Ovechkin of
the Missing Teeth stable!"
Prolonged applause greeted the Duelmaster as he stepped out onto the stands.
"What in the nine hells!" Mytori Priest cursed. "I'm fighting Ovechkin? I've been
training for the past two weeks to meet Locky, my strategy is not geared towards a
wall of steel."
"Maybe Locky didn't fight this turn?" Rao questioned.
"No, I saw Locky in the arena, he's fighting. I don't understand why my Blood
Feuds didn't go through and now I have to meet the Duelmaster again. This bout isn't
supposed to happen," Mytori Priest said cursing under his breath.
"Who knows the will of the gods?"
Khel announced, "His challenger is a former Duelmaster of Rocanis and the only
warrior in the city to have bested Ovechkin in the arena. This will be a rematch where
the challenger lost the title last turn. I know he is anxious for a chance to reclaim
the highest honor in Rocanis. It is the one and only Mytori Priest!"
The arena tunnels gate opened and a wave of ovation greeted Mytori Priest. He
gripped his shield straps, drew his sword, and stepped onto the sands.
* * *
"You play a dangerous game."
Rao looked over his shoulder and saw his stablemates Bosh and Cosh step out from
the shadows.
"The game is almost over," Rao replied.
"Caution is advised. The Gladiatorial Commission, headed by Khel Rojida himself,
is investigating the Mytori Priest's claims of interference in his Blood Feud
challenges," Cosh said.
"Ovechkin is the most dangerous gladiator in Rocanis. If he was allowed to train
up, no one within a hundred leagues could match him in battle. The Mytori Priest is
the only one that has a possibility of removing him. However, that window is quickly
closing. Risks were needed. Did you pay our colleague within the commission his price
for his assistance?" Rao asked.
"Yes, he is now a gladiator within the Skull Squadron stable," Cosh replied.
"He will also meet an untimely end in the Dark Arena later tonight," Bosh said
smirking.
"So all the loopholes are closed then, yes?"
"Permanently," said the two Rirorni twin brothers in unison.
"Then there is nothing left for us to do then sit back and watch the match. Now,
all the Mytori Priest needs to do is ensure Ovechkin doesn't leave the sands alive,"
Rao said as he folded his arms and watched the title fight in the arena.
* * *
Minute four was sounded by an oversized gong next to Khel Rojida.
"You can't continue! Give up, you're beaten!" Mytori Priest yelled.
Ovechkin spat and swatted at him with his small shield.
Mytori Priest deflected the attack.
"I'll never give the title back into the likes of some total parry scum!"
Ovechkin called back through his missing teeth.
"I'm not a scum!" The Mytori Priest barreled forward with rage, his shield
smashing before him as the crowd roared.
Oveckin parried, but he was growing tired and his defenses were getting slower.
Mytori Priest slashed and struck Ovechkin's left knee. Two additional slashes hit
his head, then his chest.
Oveckin breathed hard as he checked his wounds and studied him.
"You're exhausted! Give up!"
"I'm not done yet!" Oveckin's scimitar twisted into a tremendous cutting attack.
Mytori Priest attempted to twist away, but was struck in the left arm. The force
of the blow knocked him into the ground. Dirt and sand flew into his mouth. He
expected Ovechkin to be on top of him, but he had backed away breathing heavily.
"See, scum, I still have fight left in me. You'll not take the title away from
me. I'd rather die first."
The Mytori Priest seethed in pain and anger. He spat out the sand and dirt, that
turned to mud, in his mouth. He swung, hitting Oveckin's right ankle causing him to
back away. He rose, charged, and swung, hitting Oveckin's neck.
Minute five was sounded by an oversized gong next to Khel Rojida.
Oveckin looked towards the arena stands and stumbled.
"Give up!"
"I'm not surrendering to you, scum."
"Don't make me do this," Mytori Priest said. He slashed with his sword striking
Oveckin's forehead. He had sustained serious wounds.
"I'll never give up," Oveckin spat weakly.
"Then your pride will be your undoing," Mytori Priest's eyes flashed with a
deadly bloodlust and struck.
Ovechkin took a massive wound to the head and died, falling face-forward onto the
sands.
Mytori Priest stood over the former Duelmaster and whispered, "May your soul
travel safely through Ahringol's realm."
"This shouldn't have happened, thought the Mytori Priest. It should be Locky
dead on the sands, not Ovechkin. This game is far from over."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hail gladiators of Rocanis!
It is with a somber heart that I greet you as Duelmaster of Rocanis. I was not
expecting to regain the title back this quickly. I had not expected to meet Ovechkin
randomly on the sands, but the will of the gods of the plains changes quicker than the
wind. However, I will humbly take back the title to ensure Rocanis receives its much-
deserved Duelmaster's Column.
This turn's challenge goes out to no one other than Locky, but this time I'm issuing a
normal challenge with a secondary Blood Feud. While I prefer a Blood Feud to go
through, winning by any means will ensure my teammates' deaths are avenged.
I'll bid you farewell as it's now time for the Duelmaster's feast at Mylars, so I will
leave my fellow gladiators with some words of encouragement. Remember, each defeat in
the arena is only a delay on the long road to becoming the Duelmaster of the city.

SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
ROCANIS brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Of course, we're all terribly
impressed to see IOTA DRACONIS win a fight and gain 14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk,
SERGEANT 8 beat COSH and COSH lost 9 points. You're breakin' my heart. MYTORI
PRIEST Bloodfeuded LOCKY for ROCANIS' Title this turn, and guess what happened? And
if variety is the spice of life, ROCANIS may be getting bland, as MYTORI PRIEST stays
top dog in the city. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you
think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
MISSING TEETH, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided
team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass
act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was SKULL SQUADRON. Ha ha ha
ha! LOCKY was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM
insulted or feared? Heh, heh.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for ROCANIS'
morgue. More variety. And what a stunning loss we have here, boys and girls, LOCKY
of MEN OF STEEL has added the final loss to his 7-10-2. Tee hee! I can't say as I'm
proud to find out that SKULL SQUADRON's MYTORI PRIEST has killed LOCKY from MEN OF
STEEL. I can say I wish MEN OF STEEL good luck in their bloodfeud. A big yahoo goes
out to MYTORI PRIEST this turn, for revenging SKULL SQUADRON's bloodfeud against MEN
OF STEEL's warrior LOCKY. Heh, heh, heh. It's about time LOCKY got beat for picking
on warriors like MYTORI PRIEST. Bravo, SKULL SQUADRON. See you at The Grub & Rub
Bar and Bistro. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is
developing these kinds of weapons?
