Iaye:

Raoul, once known in the arena at Aruak City as In Gerfel We Trust, looked
around the waterfront and frowned. Even though he and his companions, Jeri
Northwind, a gladiator from Zorpunt, and Berdan, a Fratsfan ex-assassin, had just
come from the devastated town of Point, he had not expected to find Iaye in such a
mess.
"What happened here?" Jeri asked a lounger.
The local man, who could have used a bath, shrugged and spat. "The Trier rose
up and smashed the waterfront," he said. He looked at the woman calculatingly, as
though trying to guess how much money she might spend on hearing his tale. "Or
ghosts did it, if you can believe that."
"Ghosts out of Krael," Raoul said, nodding. "They hit Point, too."
"That's what folks say," the man agreed, scowling. "I guess you heard the story
already, huh? When I saw 'em coming, them ghosts, I didn't stay to ask their names.
A mean bunch. But things are pretty much okay on up the hill. Harbor House can
still give you a bed and a half-way decent feed."
Raoul looked at the man thoughtfully, glanced at his companions, and saw that
they agreed with him--ask this loafer nothing, tell him nothing. Iaye had an arena,
he and Jeri both had contacts there. That was where they'd ask their questions and
look for help.

Goff, the manager of Red Dog Gang in Iaye, shrugged. "They say it was ghosts,
but who knows? Does it matter?"
"Not to us," Raoul agreed. "Asking was just curiosity. We've got other
business. We're chasing a man known as Peranis, a Raltuman--"
"Him! He's a big-time troublemaker here, but he's got powerful friends. Nobody
can touch him."
"That's what we heard in Point, too," Jeri said, nodding. "Is he actually here
now?"
"No, I don't think so, I think he went to Skaithvarn. I keep track of him, as
much as I can, so as to keep out of his way. I had a run-in with him a few years
back," Goff explained, "and he's been out to do me bad turns ever since. That man
can REALLY hold a grudge. Uh...what do you want him for?"
Raoul glanced at Berdan, and the Fratsfan shrugged and sighed. "Peranis is a
member of the Assassins' Guild," Berdan said. "A high-ranking member. Though he's
been doing mostly administrative work lately, never doubt for a minute that he is a
dangerous man."
"Right, I won't doubt it," Goff said. "Why are you following him?"
"Because he's run off with the Guild's Black Book...which lists all the
assassins, all the Andorian spies abroad, all the people that the Guild is in a
position to coerce--"
     "Blackmail, you mean," Raoul growled.
Berdan nodded. "But up until the King disbanded the Guild, it wasn't blackmail,
it was, ah, 'encouraging them to act in the national interest rather than in their
own'."
"With the 'national interest' being determined by the Guild, of course," Jeri
muttered.
"This Black Book, is it just names, or does it have details?" Goff asked. "I
mean, if somebody steals it from Peranis, can that somebody use it to blackmail?"
"Yes. We are pursuing Peranis to retrieve the book, which will be--"
"Which will be burned as soon as we get our hands on it," Raoul finished.
"But some of the information might be of great use to the King!" Berdan
protested.
Raoul shook his head. "No. That book is muck," he said flatly, "and you can't
pick up even a little of the muck without getting dirty. Let the King compile his
own files for 'encouraging' his citizens."
"And I hope he doesn't feel the need," Jeri added. "But you're right about the
Black Book. We've got to burn it."
"But first we have to catch Peranis and get the Book away from him," Raoul
finished. "You say he went to Skaithvarn. Where? There are several strong city-
states over there."
"I didn't ask him where he was going. My idea was to stay out of sight," Goff
pointed out. "But the word is he mostly goes to Istoreth."
"Isn't that the one that has a treaty with Osksi?" Raoul asked. "I didn't like
the idea of that book falling into S'varni hands, and I like it less if the Osksians
are going to have a chance at it." He took off his bowler and frowned down into it
as though he was looking into a crystal ball. "We need to get over there. You know
anyone with a boat?"
"Well...yeah, I've got a boat myself that'd make the crossing. It isn't that
far. But...." Goff ran a hand through his hair, leaving it standing on end. "But
it might be needed here--what if the ghosts come back?"
"Why should they come back?" Raoul asked.
"Nobody knows why they came in the first place, so how can we know whether
they'll come back?" The manager shook his head like a dog shaking off water. "Are
things going crazy everywhere?"
"Yes," Jeri answered, surprising the others. Defensively she added, "Well, they
are! Point was destroyed by the ghosts, too, and Seam now has a geyser in the middle
of town that can't be helping things much, and there are other stories going around.
Have you heard anything at all from Ti lately?"
"I know, doll," Raoul said quietly, "but we can't do more than one thing at a
time, and our job is to catch Peranis."

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. ARADI needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Like, WIMPS OF DEATH
had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by SHADOW SIGNS! Way to go
SHADOW SIGNS! SHADOW SIGNS like really fought hard to move up to 1st from 7th. Way
to go! Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, WILD CARDS! 'Cause they got
3-1-0 and moved up to 6th! MVP award for BEEROPOLY? INGRATE WHITE NORTH's proud of
it after beating DAYTREADER and getting 31 points. Talk about yer big time losers!
PRIME MINISTER got smashed by LAZY EYE, and lost 14 points! Oh, wow, like the
Duelmaster must be the most popular guy in all ARADI. He got the most challenges.
(But what about proposals?) Like JOKA MASHER!'s PUTZ'N ALONG is sweating since he got
TV challenged by Duelmaster CROW! This Duelmaster is like something else! CROW
stopped PUTZ'N ALONG dead in his tracks! Who was the wiseguy that said ARADI's
Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Victory Tavern? Don't look at me!
AAARRGH!!! I HATE SPYREPORTING!!! Sorry. I just had to say it. BLOOD RELATED
was ARADI's most avoided team. Is there some award for that? Is there some deep
dark secret why WIMPS OF DEATH's been avoiding BLOOD RELATED so much? Or is it just
that they're too scared? Speaking of challenging 26 points above did you hear about
BLACK CAT of SHADOW SIGNS vs. RED DOG GANG's LUMMOX? (And how was that intro!) BLACK
CAT was so studly out there in the sands! Beating LUMMOX and getting 19 points.
SHADOW SIGNS must be proud, for sure!
Challenges, revenges, Bloodfeuds. All ARADI ever talks about is fighting! Me,
I'm more laid back. It was kind of sad, seeing old FLASH FLOOD stumbling around the
arena, before BAKY PARFUM finished her off. Oh well! What a bummer! DAYTREADER got
wasted by BEEROPOLY! But with a 15-14-0, I guess BUMS 'R' US aren't too bummed.
What a bunch of heartless! I couldn't believe how many people were snickering when
LAR'EH WALKER killed SPONGEWORTHY. So he had a 11-13-0, that's no excuse! It was
totally gross when BEEROPOLY killed DAYTREADER. Blood and itty bitty body bits all
over the place! Things weren't too happy at BUMS 'R' US, either. BAKY PARFUM
bloodfeuded (is that a word?) FLASH FLOOD for revenge over some guy's bad fortune.
Was it really worth it? Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what? (SAMANTHA HAIN vs.
ACHONDROPLASIA, that is.) Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to
hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really should stop. I had
a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

VOTE TOGS

Klutog -- Wimpy was most unhappy that I got the only team loss this turn. It was my
first fight and you sure didn't welcome me with open arms. -- Arsehead

Underground Beat -- It was a pleasure getting matched up with you. I love your name,
"Beat". How appropriate. -- Dingbat

Completely Nurmal -- There is nothing nurmal or normal about you. I didn't even get
a chance to hit you before you fell down. I sure hope it was your manager and not you
that issued the bloodfeud. 0-2 vs. me with 15-6-2? Not smart. Not smart at all. I
expect this type of stupidity from your manager but not from you. -- Scumbag

Putz'n Along -- I missed last turn so had to make it up this time. Very nice try on
your part. I think if you get rid of both shields and all the armor you might have a
chance. -- Cerote

Arenamaster -- What's the deal here? Poor only Cerote beats the pants off of Putz'n
Along and Putz'n gets Rec Leader. I don't care how many tournament fights Putz'n
has, Cerote beat him and should be ranked higher. -- Wimpy

Boone -- I try not to hang upside down. It always gives me a case of the ding-el
berries. -- Dingbat

DEATH STUD THINKS TOGS

I believe this is a sentence fragment. -- Ed.

Onomotapoeia -- Shouldn't you be named something like "swack" or "kapow" or
something, then? -- Lummox
P.S. I didn't know what your name meant, until Phred explained it to me. Very handy
phellow, Phred. A real pal.

The Limelight -- I thought I was SUPPOSED to howl at you. So why did Arenamaster
Harkon hit me with an old boot? I mean, he just THREW it at me. -- Bull Doggam

Lar'eh Walker -- What am I supposed to do with a parry skill? My expertise lies more
along the lines of barking at mailmen, scratching doors, digging up rose bushes, and
so on. -- Boone

Beeropoly -- You've already got the beginning of the belly. Stop now before it's too
late! -- Sirius, the Dog Star, channeling Carrie Nation

Hackgod -- The bigger they are, the more places to bite them! -- Teacup Terrier

Nuln -- If you burn all the mustard fields, I'll end up sneezing terribly. Are you
sure you want that? -- Spot, concerned for the well-being of Aradi
P.S. I can flutter a flag at a hundred paces with a mustard-smoke sneeze.

C. Nurmal -- (smug simper) -- Teacup Terrier

Winker X -- Puppy chow? Never touch the stuff! Give me BONES. Any kind of bones,
the fresher the better. Well, not scrod bones. Too fishy. But good red bloody
meaty bones. Gotta love 'em. -- Bull Doggam

Dingbat -- Any time. A dog is a man's best friend, after all. -- Boone

I. Peine -- Of COURSE I have hard feelings! I'm SUPPOSED to resent losing to you.
It's in my contract. -- Sirius
P.S. But other than that, no problem.

Nuln -- (wounded look) -- Merven Dree, Esq.

TRUST TOGS

The Aly'm'er -- You learned two of those off of me?!? For shame! -- Black Eye
P.S. And with TWO apostrophes in your name, no less! Nuln must be hurtin' for
warriors. -- Sultan

Crow -- Of course, I didn't avoid, silly! In fact, this turn I challenged your sorry
butt. Gonna make you eat some, too...crow, that is. -- Putz'n Along

Mervin Dree -- I was so ashamed of losing to TWO of your warriors two turns ago that
I didn't write personals. But I guess you deserve some mention for the fine feat. I
see that your minions have been training for the TOGS. I hope that Arenamaster
Harkon's monsters have been working out too. -- Snotman
P.S. 2-1 this turn also. Damn, your guys are rockin'

Eclipse -- Come on. You can't really hope to win a mismatch like that. --
Griznasshoppa

Renee Slipmind -- Just like a movie, the only thing that matters is how it ends.
Savagely defeated according to the fight reports. Not the way it looked to me, but
hey, you take what you can get. -- Nappy Dugout

Pocahostess -- Great name! -- Snotman

Not-Quite-Nurmal -- Are you an Adalanti Werecat? -- Snotman

Smirlin -- Great just announce to everyone that I teach great. Now all of the low
fight chumps are gonna want some Nappy Dugout -- NappyD

Quicksand -- Hey, tell your boss that Quicksand isn't a natural disaster. -- Lord of
the O-Ring
P.S. Tell your boss to come by my office. I might be able to help him with that
constipation issue.

Anti-Ralph -- I'm confused. You didn't spend enough time establishing what Ralph
was. I have no idea what an Anti-Ralph is -- Snotman

Seymour Nulz -- H0w u d0ing? k33pin' it 133t? -- 5no7m4n

To All -- Fellow managers, I humbly request your help. My team (Ex Oblivione) was
started in Monuntial (DM 34) back in '92. They were active for seven months. I have
lost all early traces of them. If any of you can help with copies of relevant
newsletters or, if you fought one of my warriors, copies of the fights, I would

greatly appreciate it. I only have one of my original warriors left from the early
team now active in DM 60. You can diplo me with any info here in the wonderful city
of Aradi. Thank you in advance. -- Enigma, manager Ex Oblivione

A note to everyone regarding manager names and manager lists -- If you're running a
team incognito, all you have to do is let me know and I won't put your name on any
manager lists. It has seemed though, that more people want their names listed, even
if they do not announce themselves, than the other way around. Also, I do maintain
the list more or less by hand and errors do creep in. You have but to say I've made
an error and no one will be the wiser (except thee and me, of course). -- The Saint,
keeper of lists

ANNOUNCING THE RETURN OF STORMCROWE SLAUGHTERHOUSE
The last Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse was one of the closest and most exciting
contests ever held in Alastari. Such an epic demands a sequel. Therefore, Master
Darque and Jack Wolfspider are pleased to announce the return of the Stormcrowe
Slaughterhouse.
Where? Stormcrowe DM 45 (slow). When? The Slaughterhouse returns on Turn 207,
due August 19. How can you get into the action? Bring a team (one per entrant
please) to arena 45 and announce your intention to join the contest in the Personals.
Rules: This time around the rules are very simple. Each warrior win against a
higher rated opponent (one or more points higher in the ratings) brings you 10
points, against even rated opponent 7 points, lower rated 5 points. Wins against
NPCs or by a warrior who downchallenges are worth 0 points. Points are doubled for
kills. All warriors in the arena whether participating in the Slaughterhouse or not
are fair game. Points are totaled weekly, and the contestant whose team has racked
up the most points at the end of 10 turns is declared Slaughterhouse Champion.
Prizes: To be announced; we're still talking with RSI about it. Figure it will
be something pretty good. But hey, who needs prizes when the honor of being
Slaughterhouse Champion awaits!
More info: Master Darque, MasterDarqueDM@aol.com, or Jack Wolfspider,
russtulp@aol.com. Or diplo Darque Forces (428) or Dynastic (433) in Arena 45.
