What a great finish! Thanks to all who participated. I hope you all enjoyed
yourselves. Also, a great big shout out to the RSI crew for kicking down the prizes,
putting up with all of our BS, and oh yah, for all their hard work too. Congrats to
Yukon and Shadowgate for taking turn 13 with 130 points. Death Stud and Soultaker--
way to hang on 'til the end (1 point is kinda pushing it, don't ya think). Yukon,
Shadowgate, Rage Man, and DeGotti--you guys all did an awesome job of keeping this
thing close and fighting tooth and nail to the finish. So without further
commentary, we'll move on to the prizes....
First and foremost, at the next non-meeting of the FONZ, we will move the Golden
Scrod trophy from Hombre and my corner of the room to Death Stud and Soultaker's
trophy case. I have 30 Scrod certificates left after giving out the prize for most
points on turn 13. I will be contacting the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners to
discuss prizes shortly. Thanks again, everyone!

Guardian sat in his tower, and looked out the window towards the town below.
The festivities for the end of the contest were in full swing, the streets were
packed with people, and the fights were about be fought. Guardian stood, and walked
to the window. "Malaquar!" Guardian yelled, "Bring me my quill, I need to write my
words of wisdom for the final turn of the contest!"
Malaquar entered, and handed Guardian his quill. "You have a visitor." said
Malaquar.
"Well show him in." replied Guardian.
In hopped a rabbit with a peg leg. It was Rascally. "Hi, Guardian," said
Rascally, "I'll cut right to the point, I don't have time, and I need a favor from
you."
"Well that would depend on what the favor is. Can't just grant favors without
knowing what they entail." replied Guardian.
"It's like this. The FONZ is planning a huge post-contest party, and they've
kidnapped many of my fellow farm animals to use as, well, shall we just say, "party
favors"? I need you to help me free them before horrible things happen to them."
"For you, no. But for the farm animals, yes. What sort of plan do you have?
Hang on a second." replied Guardian. "Malaquar!!" Guardian yelled, even though
Malaquar was two feet away. To say the least, Guardian enjoyed yelling at Malaquar.
"Get our equipment, and go find Pip."
Guardian sat down and turned towards Rascally, "Now tell me your plan."
Rascally began filling in Guardian on the plan to free the farm animals.
Malaquar returned with Pip and a huge assortment of equipment a few minutes
later. "I think he used to be a boy scout," Guardian whispered to Rascally, "He's
always so prepared."
The four grabbed the equipment, and headed outside. They started to walk
towards the arena. Rascally hopped up to a section of the arena wall, pushed a
stone, and a doorway opened up. They walked in and then immediately down a
staircase. "Where are we?" asked Malaquar.
"These are the tunnels under the arena." replied Guardian. "They go just about
everywhere in town. It's a huge network. This will lead us to the FONZ's dungeon."
"I believe they call it the "Pleasure Palace"." piped in Pip.
They consulted their map, which was labeled "Maps to the Manager's Dungeons".
They'd purchased it from a vagrant on the way to the arena. Soon they headed off in
what they hoped was the right direction.
"I think we're right below the arena." said Malaquar, "I can hear the fighting."
They heard a loud gurgling choking noise, followed by a crashing thump. "What
the hell was that?" asked Pip.
"Relax, that's just one of Soultaker's warriors choking during the final turn.
Probably on his own challenge too." said Guardian. "Let's get going."
They followed the winding tunnel for what seemed like minutes, and arrived at a
door. There was a sign on the door, in crayon of course. It said, "FONZ party
supplies. Stay out. This means you, Snotman."
Malaquar opened the door. Inside were the missing farm animals, caged or in
various restraints. "Thank you, Guardian, I owe you big time." said Rascally, as he
hopped forward and began opening cages. He freed all the animals and hopped away
down the tunnel with them.
"Why did we bring all this equipment?" Malaquar asked Guardian.
"So you could go put it away while I go watch the remaining fights. Seeya."

All in all, the two best guys I had died early. A 21 wit/3 CN, TV ST that I lost on

TOGS was a lot of fun, just wish I could have gotten one more stinking point. (It's
all Sean's fault.) I'm going to de-activate the team until next TOGS.

Aruak City:

Conversation in the Bulldog Inn stopped as the ground shifted slightly
underfoot, then resumed. A little faster, a little more shrill. There had been a
lot of earth tremors lately, and in one way, people were getting used to them.
Nobody rushed outside in alarm. Nobody talked about moving to some other area.
There was a betting pool on when the next tremor would occur.
But in another way, they weren't getting used to them at all. Earthquakes in
Aruak City were WRONG. In Seam, okay, if they were mild and didn't happen very often
(although lately they had been frequent and devastating). You expected strange earth
movements in Seam, because of the hot springs. Hot springs meant things like that
might happen. But not HERE.
"It's because of Krael rising," explained Thermodynamics, a gladiator from Point
passing through the city. "The balances are disturbed. You see, Krael came from the
bottom of the Trier, which is very cold. Therefore, some place else has to become
very hot to balance it." He paused and frowned. "Or maybe some other place has to
sink, a down to balance the new up, so to speak."
Adeolar, listening to him, sighed with exasperation. "It isn't that," she
muttered. "Oh, maybe the bit about some other area sinking to balance the rising of
Krael--I've got people watching for that, all along the coast. But the 'hot and
cold' business--"
"Let him talk," Kennelworth said, gauging the mood of the crowd. "It's an
explanation people can accept, and they'll feel less alarmed by it. We don't want a
riot, and there's nothing they can do about things right now, so...?" He looked back
at the flame-haired manager. "There isn't anything, is there?"
Adie grimaced. "I don't know. I don't think stopping Khaldren in Zorpunt will
be enough to stop what's happening, now. The spell he started has taken on a life of
its own. I'm trying to discover a counterspell--that won't make things worse in some
other way! But until then, just...treat the symptoms. Fight the monsters, help the
people displaced," she shrugged, "the obvious things. And keep arena deaths down,
because the blood feeds the spell." She began to twist a lock of hair around her
finger, tugging on it thoughtfully. "I've been thinking about a counterspell. The
original magic came from Krael, however it got to the present. Maybe the
counterspell can be found there."
"Searching Krael for the spell that would sink it again will be dangerous," the
old innkeeper and manager warned. "The reports say that there are people there who
are ready to defend it."
"That's what gladiators are for, isn't it?" Adie asked. "Protecting Alastari.
Stopping this spell that is bringing the past to life falls under that heading."

Iaye:

Great Dane looked over the improvised barricade that divided the island of Iaye
from the risen city of Krael and whistled. "You said they were regular people," he
commented, scanning the muddy approach. "Those are, I guess they're zombies."
Goff shrugged. "I guess the regular people I saw when the city first rose were
wizards, at least some of them. And there must have been plenty of dead around for
them to turn into zombies. Damn. How do you kill something that's already dead?"
Great Dane glanced back at the people straggling toward the barricade from
Iaye's side. "That isn't going to be our first problem. The first one is, how do we
get our defenders to stand fast against them? Those are fishermen, farmers,
shopkeepers. You think they're going to fight zombies?"
     "Gladiators, too," Goff protested.
"Not enough, if the wizard in charge of those zombies knows anything about
battle."

Aruak City:

"First, gather information," Adeolar muttered. It was one of the basic rules
that the more information you had relevant to your problem, the better your chance
was of solving it. She frowned at her gilt-framed magic mirror, twisting a lock of
hair thoughtfully as she considered how to make best use of it. It was still
working, after a fashion, but the reddish film tainting the glass was stronger. It
confused the images, and she suspected that it also indicated something more
dangerous than misreading a scene: that the spell which it embodied was being
contaminated by blood magic, as well. Contaminated, and maybe distorted, maybe even
subverted. Did she dare use the mirror spell now?
Did she dare NOT use it? She needed information to plan her campaign against
Khaldren. She shook her head and wiped at the red-tinged glass once more. She would
just have to--
     "Ma'am?"
She glanced over her shoulder as Segallion Sundancer, one of her warriors,
looked into the room. His countrywoman Nila was with him.
"Nila and I were wondering if we could help, ma'am. You being a sun priestess,
and us being temple staff of the Sun Temple on Korvant Isle, well, we thought we
might be...compatible."
"Oh. Hmm." Adie frowned, her fingers automatically going to one of her curls
and twisting it as she considered the possibilities. The worship of the sun as
performed in the western Karian states was not at all like that of her own tradition,
but it might work. It might, at least, be worth trying. "Perhaps," she said
finally. "Let's set it up this way: I'll start on my own, and if I don't need your
help, you keep out of it-- It's too dangerous to mix in if you aren't needed," she
added sternly as Segallion opened his mouth to protest. "But you be READY, and if I
need help, I'll signal you." Maybe she would, but maybe not. It WAS dangerous, and
neither gladiator had achieved Sheila Greywand's immortality yet. But she understood
the need to be helpful, and she might not have to make use of their aid.
When both gladiators nodded agreement, she turned back to her mirror.
Carefully, with every aspect of the spell observed meticulously--something that
wasn't necessary under better times, because spells were normally all of a piece and
could "take a hint," as it were--she began the incantation that would activate the
mirror. The surface shimmered crimson silver, glittering and trembling. This was
NOT the normal behavior of a mirror spell! It felt as though she was trying to lift
a great weight with her mind. She had never thought of the veil between HERE and
THERE as a weight before....
Abruptly the glass cleared, or nearly so, a reddish film remained. And there
was risen Krael as she had seen it before. But this time she was not interested in
the general view. It was an accepted law of magic that for every strength a magician
or wizard had, there was a corresponding weakness. Khaldren had come into the
present from Krael, and somewhere in that city she hoped to find a clue to his power
and his weakness.
There was the ancient city, mud-stained and battered by the centuries it had
spent sunk beneath the Trier. There the survivors, moving about their tasks which
seemed inexplicable but must be linked in some way to Khaldren. She selected one of
the better-dressed men and began to follow him through the ruins. His course was
erratic, she thought at first it was to avoid the obstacles presented by the city's
decrepit state. But he climbed over the mound of rubble that represented a fallen
wall, and splashed through a knee-deep pool of water and mud. There were easier ways
to get from one point to another, so why...?
The man met up with another, handed over a...she couldn't see what, a crystal of
some sort, and sat down on a stone to wring out the hem of his robe. The other man
set off across the rubble. With a cold shock, Adie realized that the movement of
these men, and others in Krael, were themselves parts of a spell.
What kind of spell would be produced by somatic components on such a scale? A
very powerful one.... Were the other "risen cities" involved in this? Celestinvael
had been mentioned, and Old Valamantis. Adie turned her mirror-sight to the south.
She was marginally aware that behind her the two gladiators began to dance and
chant.

Near Ardivent:

Master Cho, former manager of the Bluvalley Warriors of Ardivent and Chan Chi
Monastery of Khalhums, sipped his wine and nodded approval. "Very good. Quite
drinkable, in fact."
Fandil, former manager of the Fandils, laughed and poured wine into his own cup.
"Like you wouldn't drink it anyway, you old bandit?" He sobered. "What brings you
down from the mountains, Cho? The rumors about Celestinvael?" The ancient city lay
in the forested no-man's-land between Ardivent and the Delarquan Federation, and
woodsmen had been bringing tales of marvels and minor disasters for weeks now. That
it was a matter for concern, a matter that would bear watching, was undeniable, but
Fandil had seen nothing to indicate that it was urgent.
"Celestinvael is enough to worry about," Master Cho answered, nodding, "and it
is indirectly what brought me here. If you think about what the city was like in its
last days...! But my immediate concern is young Adeolar up in Aruak City."
"I may be retired," old Fandil said stiffly, "but I'm not COMPLETELY out of
touch, Cho! Adeolar is a very competent woman, and Kennelworth is not worried about
her--he'd have mentioned it in his last letter. She can handle anything she's likely
to meet."
"No doubt...one on one. But that fool Khaldren has invoked and involved wizards
from a dozen centuries. Not all of them will work together--as well try to get cats
to run in step! But some will, and can she handle two, or six, or ten, if they're
all working together?"
"Ah." Fandil was silent for several minutes, stroking his beard slowly as his
mind raced. "Ah. That could be...bad. Very bad." He set his wine cup down
carefully. "You're quite right. We'll have to assist her, or at least be ready to
do so. Now?"
     "What better time?"

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings again, Aradi,
It's a pleasure to once again hold the throne in this fine arena. Who would
have guessed it would be with the same style.
I must say it was an exciting TOGS IV finish. I blame myself for losing the
contest; if I hadn't missed that one turn we could have won it.
So, is Aradi the home of the CDC now or what? Seems like you are all here?
Anti, Thorne is no Brak; you needed to bring your A game to take him out. He is
probably worse then Brak. Heeheh! Seriously, if you all could see what this guy
looks like you would be kicking yourself in the ass if you lost to him. OK, he's not
all that bad he has a good fav learn that saved him a lot.

Until next turn,

                                      SPY REPORT

It's me, The Unknown Spymaster here with my bag to give you the news on last
week's fights. Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit it's
corny) is THE UNDERWORLD, who swept up 11 places in the ranks. Suffering under a
0-3-0 record and dropping from 8th to 21st place were the RED AVENGERS. Keep trying!
Advancing in the rankings was LUROCIANS VI who went from last turn's 105-87-7, to
this week's record of 109-88-7. Hey everybody, watch out for FALKYNOR, who flew up
24 points in the rankings after mashing TWICKLEBUM like a melon. Keep your eye on
this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. SUPERNOVA was
subdued by LEO and drops 13 points. Well, everybody's pal THORNE moved his record to
17-4-0 by defeating OBITER DICTA in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 2
recognition points. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and
avoid aiming at that location.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the ARADI arena. Here's a
song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad NATURAL DISASTERS? Big bad NATURAL
DISASTERS. Big bad NATURAL DISASTERS. ARADI's afraid of the big bad NATURAL
DISASTERS. Tra la la la la! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch I HATE THEM's
act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from NATURAL
DISASTERS. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, LORD OF THE O RINGS would
be president. Although it may be a contest she doesn't want to win. Challenging
down 19 points was NEWCASTLE. Pretty soon he'll be using two shields and selling
'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Definition of petty: NEWCASTLE defeated
LACHES, a mismatch of 19 points. In a mismatch, our friend MURRAY of POWER BROKERS
got heroic notions and challenged BRAK. What did it get her? A 12-8-0 record,
that's what. Trading many whacks on the head and a loss for 6 recognition points,
MURRAY shows that a gal doesn't have to be good to get places. In a touching display
by a 'touched' warrior, DR. FEELGOOD went after LLUCKY DAY, who was higher by 25
points. Well, when the dust settled, DR. FEELGOOD was defeated by LLUCKY DAY.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! MICHAEL J'EH FOX defied all odds
and slew JORGE BLACK ORC in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the
buzzards, as JORGE BLACK ORC's meat is notoriously tough. Big deal, so ZERBERT got
mashed in the Dark Arena. With his face he was more at home with the trolls than
with us. (Waka waka). ZERBERT says to his dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog
says 'MARINE TROLL'. So the guy dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. There's got
to be more reason for the sending of KERRY to the Dark Arena than his record (4-1-0).
Anybody got any ideas POWER BROKERS? Carrion Bird Cinematic Humor: FLORIN
FALCONHAND II: THE REMATCH. Knowing when to use the right tactics at the proper
time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian,
but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la bye-bye. (Loud
choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

Congratulations to The Stud and The Soultaker, and The FONZ, I guess, for the
magnificent TOGS victory. Kudos! -- The Consortium Teams

Is it true? The Rage Man, a.k.a. Manalger, a.k.a. Duane The Dog, a.k.a. Manager The
King pulled a win-at-all-costs sneak entry of a newby in Aradi? Shades of Doc
Steele! You have learned well from your master mentor, big guy. My, my! -- The
Crazy Creepster

TOGS participants, especially the runner ups, thank you for making TOGS the event it
was. We loved every minute of it. A salute to Editor, who had her work cut out for
her, and delivered it in top-notch fashion! -- All Us Consortiumites

You are all most welcome. It's been an...interesting six months. -- Ed.

Pip -- Clearly this was all your fault. Of course, I blame Malaquar and Neon as
well. His bad management seems to have rubbed off on me. -- Guardian

Manager -- I know that's you bidding on your spine on ebay, so stop running up the
auction. -- Guardian

All -- Good job to everybody in the T@#$. My only suggestion for next time: since
Pip thought a 'scrod' was a part of the male anatomy, perhaps we should change the
idol next time to something non-animal. Like, the Tournament of the Golden Paradox.
Of the Tournament of the Golden Cement Block. -- Nuln

It's animal (not fish), but how about the Tournament of the Golden Retriever? --
     Ed.

Soulie 'n Studdie -- Way to go boys, very nice win. It's like if the A's (FONZ)
could ever beat the Yanks (DOA) in the division series; so satisfying & so deserving.
The best part, of course, is to hear Manalger's feeble story to show his side of yet
another sad attempt. I wouldn't say I look up to you guys, but you're alright. --
Nuln

Voyde -- Oh no, thank you. That was just a warm up for you of what it's like to run
just one team the entire T@#$. Next time you'll have all the kinks worked out.
Thanks for giving it a go. Next time Aradi will be better prepared to deal with the
sophistication and literary knowledge that you bring to the table. -- Nuln

So it was you that took my trowel! -- Ed.

Grainy Granoly, Death Subotai & Ed. Wood -- Much gratefulness for all the hard work.
-- Nuln

Erik the Red -- You're not a face of Eternity. Because you aren't anything like the
Great Wolf of Time. -- Duke
P.S. And probably Space, as well.

Weed 4 Mom -- Well, you SAID you were a weed, and nobody minds if I dig up the WEEDS.
It's just the flowers people get upset about. I don't know why. It isn't like they
eat them. -- Pretty Boy

The constable thought he was going to be friendly and slip me a hamburger, but it had
ONIONS on it! So I bit him. I mean, what else should I do? I'm a dog. I bit him,
and then I scratched the onions off the burger and ate it anyway. Waste not, want
not. -- Queenie

Mad Max -- It was not Snotman, it was ME. -- Spot, or in Jurine, Jorja manager of
Favorite Guys
P.S. I am not a good manager. Just a persistent one.

                                     DEATH FEST

The ferocious ghosts of former glories whispered across the wind swept sands of
DM 59; agonizing incessantly due to the diminutive demise of the Delarq arena known
as Illis.
Tattered banners and forgotten memories wailed in the wind for a dynamic death
march to dawn once more upon the blood stained sands of the Delarq slow arena.
The distant call crying for a declaration of restoration amidst the ruin of the
all but forgotten Delarq arena carried to the far corners of Alastari; drawing the
Devious, the Diabolical, the Dangerous and the Down Challenging to cross blades and
wage warfare among an assemblage of new stables managed by the Known and Unknown;
willing to spill fresh blood, while carving their destiny during 15 Rounds of contest
driven combat to be known as the "Illis Incredibly Diabolical Delarq Death Fest".
A lone cloaked figure huddled by lamplight in a remote outpost near the
crossroads of ElseWhere and ElseWhen; feverishly formulating the foundational
framework for the dawning of the Delarq Death Fest in DM 59, complete with
Gladiatorial Commission sanctioned prizes to promote the growing thirst for a Delarq
Slow Arena Death Festival.

Delarq Death Fest Opening Round debuts the first turn immediately following the
Summer 2004 F2F Tourney and continues through the completion of 15 consecutive
rounds.
Death Fest points are Won or Lost ONLY in the DM 59 Delarq Slow Arena [Tourneys
DO NOT Add or Subtract from the Death Fest Point Scoring System]:

Death Fest Scoring Format:
Win =3D +2 pts
Loss =3D -1 pt
Kill =3D +5 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Death =3D -3 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Dark Arena Kill =3D +10 pts [in addition to +2 pts for Win]
Dark Arena Death =3D -5 pts [in addition to 1 pt for Loss]
Revenged Blood Feud =3D +5 pts [successful Revenged Blood Feud provides Death Fest
contestants the opportunity to cancel out 3 pts for Death and 1 pt for Loss; while
gaining +1 pt overall for the Revenged Blood Feud in addition to the +2 pts for Win]

DEATH FEST PRIZES will be awarded to the Top Ten Death Fest Stables on the basis
of Total Points*** accumulated during the 15 rounds of competition as follows:

1. Favorite Weapon Knowledge for 1 (one) warrior ranked Initiate or higher on the
Final Round to be revealed by RSI to each of the Top Ten Death Fest Stables
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters and NPCs [yet to be determined according to how
many DA Monsters and NPCs are available in DM 59 for Renaming]
3. The Top Five Death Fest Stables will receive New Team Rollup Certificates as
follows: 1st (10), 2nd (8), 3rd (6), 4th (4) and 5th (2)
4. Renaming Illis Arena for 6 months plus Receiving 6 months Free Play courtesy of
RSI will be awarded to the manager of the 1st Place Death Fest Stable
5. Discussions are underway regarding a possible Special Award granted to the Illis
Iron Stable qualifiers who compete in 67 of a possible 75 fights during the course of
the 15 consecutive rounds of the Death Fest [Key Factor is How Many (?) stables will
be competing in the Death Fest without drawing away participation by current managers
in the remaining slow arenas!] Therefore, it is important for all managers entering
stables in DM 59 for the upcoming Death Fest to contact RSI as soon as possible
regarding their participation in this contest so that a Final Ruling on the proposed
Illis Iron Stable Award can be issued by RSI.

***TieBreaker is determined on the Final Round by the DM 59 Newsletter Recognition
Rankings. The stable with the Highest Ranked Active Gladiator is granted the
decision. [Example: Warrior A and Warrior B are both listed in the Recognition
Rankings with 87 pts; however, because Warrior A is listed in the Recognition
Rankings ahead of Warrior B, then Warrior A is granted the TieBreaker Decision for
His/Her stable!]

Opening Round Team Spotlight Bonus [minimum 15 paragraphs!] Each Delarq Death
Fest competitor who writes a Team Spotlight featuring their Stable (Name) and
Managerial Alias [Gladiatorial Names Optional] in regards to competing in the Delarq
Death Fest will receive 25 pts added to His/Her opening round score.
Illis Iron Stable Bonus [in addition to the proposed award awaiting RSI
approval!] Any manager whose stable competes in at least 67 of the possible 75
fights during the 15 rounds of Death Fest receives 25 points added to His/Her final
overall score [this allows each stable the cushion of missing one round of
competition; plus up to 3 additional fights due to waiting for replacement rollups
from Deaths suffered either in Tourneys or during the Death Fest contest in DM 59
over the course of 15 rounds of competition!]
