(Andorak a week ago)

"And so, ladies and gentlemen, as you can see, it is only just, nay, it is only
fair that we grant the wishes of the proud people of Aradi, and in so doing pass
into the law my referendum, which, among other things, declares that the Official
Animal of our island brethren shall be none other than the skilled & industrious
Scrod!" Nuln pounded the slanted podium before him for emphasis, gauging the
response from the gallery surrounding him. "Thank you."
Mild applause greeted the Duke of Woodfell as he walked back to his box. The
Andorian senate was meeting for a special session for all unfinished business of the
year, including its last call for referendums. Nuln's gaze found that of the Aruaki
Senator across the gallery, Purina Minxalot, and almost imperceptibly he nodded.

(Aradi a week later)

Farmer boB leapt up with a start, the sound of a metal fist pounding the front
doors of his farm house. It had to be at least 2 am. He could hear what sounded
like lots of armored men moving outside, and the rustle of hooves. The fist pounded
again, this time harder.
Rubbing his eyes, boB hurried to the front door, the pounding continuing.
Before he could reach it, the door burst in and a dark figure in chain mail (who boB
recognized as the garrison captain) stepped inside, a torch in one hand.
"Are you Farmer Bob?" rasped the captain, as three more guardsmen filed in
behind him forming a phalanx.
"Er, yes." Replied boB, not bothering to correct the captain's misspelling of
his name.
"Here!" Growled the captain, shoving a crudely bound parchment tablet in the
manager's chest. It bore the official seal of the mayor's office. "It explains
everything."
"Explains what?!" boB yelled, trying to look over the shoulder of the captain
into the dark of night. There were more men outside, some with torches, and the
animals were all out of their stalls and pens. "What's going on?"
"It's a new law, mate. Read those papers, it's all in there."

(Aradi the next morning at the docks)

It was early, but the normally empty piers were packed to the gills. Wide
lanes had been cordoned off leading up to the fleet of Andorian cargo ships docked
there. Inside the heavily roped barriers streamed a long, seemingly unending line
of animals of the two, three and four-legged variety. An anonymous tip had alerted
the mayor's office of the possible surly crowd that might show up at the docks, and
the garrison was out in full force.
There were many notables among those witnessing the grand exodus. The
Creepster wailed plaintively as his former pet ostrich, Ethel, was led in shackles
to the boat. Others, like the Death Stud, bore their losses with more stoicism. He
watched silently as Big Red, his rooster on steroids made his way down the line, but
the manager's eyes told a different story.
A few blocks away, on a perch atop a nondescript warehouse, two figures watched
the proceedings with a bit more perspective.
"You are too mean, Nuln." grinned Lady Elysian, getting a giggle out of the
massive outpouring of emotion being displayed below her. "So no more animals at all
on Aradi?"
"None that walk on legs at least. All farmers and pet-owners were compensated,
however, pound-for-pound, with live scrod and scrod tanks."
"What if I want to get a kitty cat?"
"For your own safety, and perhaps more importantly the cat's, that is now
prohibited." Nuln replied. "I told you, from now on the only legal domesticated
animal allowed within the city limits is the courageous and industrious scrod. And
just in time for the TOGS, too."
"A fish in a bowl? How dull." Lady Elysian fake pouted, sticking out her
bottom lip. "I'll have to see what the price of black-market cat is!"
"Ah, you just don't see the full potential of all that is the mighty scrod."
Nuln rhapsodized, Lady E shooting him a look. "Such a subtle creature, that thrives
despite its horrible name. And you can't beat deep-fried scrod-balls. They're all
the rage during TOGS."
"Well, I'm bored." Elysian turned away from the docks. "Can we go back
downstairs?"
Nuln looked once more at the scene down on the docks, then motioned to the
staircase, following his fellow manager down the steps. The two entered the main
floor of the warehouse, the dimly lit room filled with man-sized objects draped over
with dark cloth.
Lady Elysian grabbed the hem of one of one of the cloths, and pulled it free.
Standing before them was an exact perfect replica of Nuln, helm, underchin and all.
The two managers smiled at each other.
"You know," Lady Elysian mused, scratching her chin. "If anyone else found out
about this, especially considering what's going on out there, they might be very
desperate to get their hands on your technology. Be careful, my friend."

(later that evening)

Nuln flopped down in his bed, using one foot to get a boot off of the other.
He had stayed away from much of the hysteria that had continued throughout the rest
of the day, repairing to his estate to take care of some interviews for the empty
position on his team. There had been a few bright prospects, but no one that had
truly grabbed his attention.
The Chaos Lord could feel the pull of sleep dragging his eyelids down and his
consciousness along with it. Then all of a sudden he heard it. Laying perfectly
still, Nuln took in the absolute silence that covered the dead of night.
His peace, however was disturbed, quite rudely, I might add. Nuln lurched up,
his face stricken with terror and rage. He listened again, his ears disbelieving,
mind racing. Then he heard it again:
Somewhere, off in the night, a dog howled.
     "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!" screamed Nuln.

Arenamaster Harkon watched as the rescued "woman" threw her arms around Jorge
Black Orc. If Jorge had been human, the arenamaster would have worried about him
succumbing to the charms (literally) of this magical construct. He himself might
have succumbed, had he not been armored by the magnifying glass of Detecting the
Real Truth, because the construct was very comely. It was not, however, comely to
an orc's taste, and Harkon well knew this. The construct was slim, for one thing,
and orcs liked their women well upholstered. And it had no tusks. Yes, Jorge was
pushing her away.
Harkon strolled over, avoiding the bodies even though they were beginning to
look...not quite real. In fact, not at all real. There should be more blood
around, more spilled guts and other miscellaneous body parts, and a lot more stink.
This kind of butchery was hardly a sanitary business, after all. But the clishay
did not include the natural but unpleasant debris.
"Now what?" Jorge asked, pushing the construct away again. "What's the next
clishay? How about...you and me going to a tavern and having a quiet drink while
this gets cleaned up? A quiet drink would be good." He pushed the construct away
another time, more forcefully. "What's WITH this wench?"
"She isn't real," Harkon said. "Just a stage prop. And it's part of HER
clishay to throw herself at her rescuer and cling like a limpet."
"Yeah, well, she'll just have to go back on the shelf until some other rescuer
comes along." Jorge swung his arm back without looking, knocking the construct on
its perfectly formed rear. "I don't understand this 'sacrifice a virgin wench'
deal," he confided as they headed for the doorway. "Seems wasteful to me."
Harkon shrugged. "This is Aradi. They aren't likely to find a virgin sheep,
you know."
The Black Orc was silent for several minutes as they strode down the alley--it
was longer than when they'd come in--and stepped back through the curtain of rain
into the wet night. "That's perverse," he said mildly, "and even worse, it's
juvenile perversity. You know, 'I can be more shocking than you! Nyah, nyah, I
dare you' and so on."
"Now, Jorge, no bigotry here. Some people actually LIKE sheep."
"Yeah, well, on Aradi, that's a clishay, too."

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to ARADI once again! Biff! Pow! ARADI watched with glee as CRAZY
CREEPS got knocked off top spot by DILEN'S HORDE! Who can explain it? Not you, not
me, not SILENT WARRIORS' opponents, after watching them shoot up the ranks from 23rd
to 3rd. Looking for a good fight, confident, skilled, tough opponents. Well don't
look at BUGS, SLUGS & THUGS, cause they dropped by 12. It seems so recently people
were saying ARADI RESORT & SPA was washed up, finished. But 5-0-0 moved them up 9.
I guess they're washed no more... What's with THE TAIL? He actually beat DEATH
STUDS VII's ONE-TIMER, and walked away with 23 more points from the fight. Laughs
were big at SILENT WARRIORS while they watched PANTHER clobber DERRIN. He lost 15
points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. Har har har! Did FALCON
XLI wimp out, or just get lazy? Anyway, he's not Duelmaster anymore. I'm sure ARADI
is excited about THE TAIL, the new Duelmaster from RED DOG GANG. (remember?) But
when you've seen as many as I have... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and
dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... ARADI thinks THIEVES
GUILD and their 166-168-6 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give up...
Management must be dealin', as the boys at CRAZY CREEPS ain't reelin'! THIEVES
GUILD's mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior,
HOLSTIEN HEAVEN! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. WILSON
FERGUSON of THE BUNKHOUSE knows how to pick 'em. He challenged MOUSE of SILENT
WARRIORS who is up by 19. Now was this a wise move? WILSON FERGUSON perhaps got his
just desserts, seeing as he was bested by MOUSE and ended up with 5 recognition
points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that NAPPY
DUGOUT gets in. She fights people like FLOWER, 14 points below. I thought NAPPY
DUGOUT showed great skill and promise when she was bested by FLOWER. All right, so I
slept through it! Big deal!
Warriors of ARADI unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I
been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? Are
you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm writing it
before you read it. Oh, well. I don't want to overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Lima Beans -- You silly veggie, you! It was downright goofy that you did not
succumb to my advances. -- Goofy

Hurricane -- XOXOXOXO, I think I love you. Love is a many splendored thing! Love
is what makes the world go round. Thank you for choosing moi for a mate. I really,
really like that kind of fun. (wink) -- Tiny Tim
(Death Stud -- Since this is one of your team, I thought I should interpret this for
you -- Our warrior is thanking you for challenging him, and letting him be on top.
He likes circumstances that climax in that manner. He thinks Hurricane is a
hottie.)
(Personally I would say to you that perhaps you are better off backstabbing
Soultaker, as your results seem much better.) -- The Crazy Creeps Scribe

Panther -- I challenged you for the easy win because you reminded me of Dopey. I am
sorry that the only thing I had to offer you was the uneaten apple that someone left
for me. -- Snow White

Thalia -- There is just something about you which turns me on. -- Jack The Ripper

Soultaker -- I think it is inappropriate for you to pester Manager with those silly
statements that you make. He is, after all, the greatest manager in all Alastari,
as he so often tells us all. So why don't you pick on someone your own size like
Death Stud. (Sorry, I was not intending to discriminate about size, as you are
clearly formidable to that end. I really meant to limit that size comment to the
mutual miniscule pea-brain.) -- The Crazy Creeps Scribe

We apologize for the lack of the Tidbits From The Aradi Free Press this round. The
Editor is in court protecting you by testifying in a Class Action Suit against some
upstart cheap "rags" initiated in Aradi. Meanwhile, feel free to subscribe to the
full Aradi Free Press to get all the news of value in Aradi. Send checks in any
amount to 101 Overlook Ct. Easley, SC, 29642. We will figure out how to spend it.

Now why didn't I think of that fund-raising tactic...? -- Ed., no relation

To all new teams, and Non-Fonz members Nuln, and Ed. -- HOE-DOWN, Farmer boB's Farm,
Come as you are, Moonshine & Pigs feet for everyone.

Who could turn down such an attractive offer? It's not every day pigs' feet
are offered. I hope they're pickled. Or is that what the moonshine is for? --
     Ed.
P.S. Chicken feet are better--they make really cool "scare the impressionable"
     puppets.

Mission -- If you are going to be my partner your going to have to get off your

Farmer boB local paper headlines
FONZ=What Creepster said
Aradi -- Population boom
Sighting -- Soultaker spotting (probably lost retired gnome)
Social event of the year -- Hoe Down
(This issue brought to you by Hardie's)

Soultaker -- Turn up your hearing aid. -- Farmer boB

All -- Well, I may have slightly exaggerated last time about Indimar. I never had
to have reconstructive surgery. Also, I may have been a little over-dramatic when I
said I was back for vengeance. It's more like I'm back to make his life a living
hell, but in a fun way. -- Pauly, mgr. The Bunkhouse

Indimar -- Well played father, the first round belongs to you. But we will meet
again! -- Pauly
P.S. Is it cool if I come over to do some laundry?

Soultaker -- I can understand your warning, having been witness to your 'surprise'
in January! -- Lord Xiang

Lady Elysian -- Welcome back to the sands! Your presence has been sorely missed,
Milady. -- Lord Xiang, mgr. AARP

A-Sop -- I wouldn't worry about what Soultaker said. You and I both know that in
order to win, one must be willing to do what it takes to win. I predict it will be
a Delarquan pairing that wins TOGS. Either that, or the Andorians will be entering
250 Total Parries. -- Lord Xiang, Proud Delarquan

Seraphim -- Where are you? Pipe up already!! *grin* -- Lord Xiang, your TOGS
partner

Barnabas -- As you probably noticed, I decided not to bloodfeud Rip Rap. After TOGS
will be soon enough for my warriors to swim against the current. -- I.F.

All -- I will be partnered with Elepunk, I mean Cyberphant...you know who I mean...
little guy...big mouth. -- Indimar Fallon

That's not necessarily enough of a description for a positive identification.
     -- Ed.

I would also like to announce the reopening of The Scrod Shoppe just in time for

TOGS. Remember us for all your TOGS fanwear and gifts. I am sorry to say we will
no longer offer the golden scrodpieces, a little problem with certain regions
turning green...you get the picture. -- Indimar

Pandora -- I have not crossed paths with you since my days in Zensu. I would be
honored to send you any blood that happens to be drained from my warriors if you're
still in the habit of drinking it. -- Indimar

Soultaker -- Thanks for making your welcome a little less deadly than Barnabas did.
Can't the FONZ keep him under control? -- Indimar

Pauly -- YOU INSOLENT WHELP!!! I am starting to regret having been so kind to you
when you were younger. Didn't I let you sleep in the house every year on your
birthday? Wasn't it me who convinced your mother to let you eat whatever you wanted
before we threw it to the hogs? Some nights I came home tired and wanted nothing
more than to sit and relax, but I still found the energy to give you your nightly
beating because I knew it was it was for your own good. Damn me? Damn you. ;} --
Indimar

Aradi -- I have saved the best for last. The Scrod Shoppe has expanded and will now
feature a counter where you can sample the heavenly elixir that I love so much...you
guessed it, Scrodbucks has come to Aradi. Mention this ad and receive one free
Scrodbucks Doubleshot or grande scrodtte. -- The oh so proud (and wired) Indimar
Fallon

Nuln -- That may be true (re: inability to pilot scum out of wet paper bag), but you
couldn't run a squirrel out of your nutsack. (Before Ed. gets up in arms, Nuln
always carries around a small burlap sack full of nuts. Nuln really likes his nuts.
Peanuts, walnuts, almonds, pistachios, cashews and sometimes he even branches out to
the seeds and has sunflower or pumpkin seeds in his sack. In fact, Nuln is so proud
of his nutsack that he had the words, "NULN'S NUTSACK" printed in bold red letters
on it, lest someone mistake it for their own nutsack. In recent times, I've noticed
that certain weak willed, trend following managers have been scrambling to produce
nutsacks of their own. Barnabas enjoys his nuts lightly toasted and dusted with
l-glutamine. Soultaker had sequins sown onto his in the hopes that it would
distract people from his increasingly liver spotted bare scalp. Death Stud's sack
was too small to hold letters so he hangs a cardboard sign off of it, "Stud's
Sack".) -- Snotman
P.S. I've recently seen Hombre eating sunflower seeds out of a David's plastic bag
and Inferno drinking OldE out of a paper bag but I'm not sure if those are related.

You can always tell it's going to be a good one when the parenthetical comment
is longer than the original personal. -- Ed.

All -- For those of you that are new to Aradi, I am Snotman and I run the Wild
Cards. Nuln and I will be partners in the upcoming TOG$. -- Snotman

Enoch Peabody -- I like chasing frisbees. Do you want to do it again? -- Stevie

Devourer -- Did your person forget to feed you? -- Bully Boy

(sneezing and gagging) I dod'd do whad dad fmell waf, bud id'f awful. -- Flower

Sehenstes -- They tell me I have to go to a different place and play with new
people. I like playing with my old people. Will you come play with me later? --
Pretty Boy

(barking excitedly) Not a dwarf! Not a dwarf! An impostor! I bit him three
times! -- The Tail

Inigo -- What word? -- Bully Boy
P.S. Spot looked at all my personals for the last three months and says those are
all good words properly used.

Ed. -- (grimly) I noticed the timing. -- Temp Ed.

Just trying to share the joy, of course! -- Ed.

Creepster -- I didn't catch you peeking! -- A-Sop

Nat. Cat. Ass. -- Thank you. -- A-Sop

Death Stud -- Of course not, I just read them a bit differently than everyone else,
that doesn't make me wrong. -- A-Sop (smiling serenely)

Soultaker -- An Andorian? Me? I think you've been in the closet too long, my dear.
You need some fresh air to blow the cobwebs out of your...ears. -- A-Sop
P.S. Niatoli Island is a Free Blades arena.

A few notes about e-mailed personals:

You may submit personal ads, columns, spotlights, etc. electronically, either via e
mail or on the web at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Ads. When you
submit something, you should get back a receipt from HAL at RSI. If you do NOT get
a receipt, your ads may have gone astray (not all e-mail makes it to its destination
any more than all snail mail does). If you DO get a receipt, it should, in the body
of the message, tell you what arena your stuff was filed in. Check your receipt to
make sure your submission made it to the intended destination. Also check to see
that everything you sent made it to the same place. Sometimes HAL, who is rather
simple-minded in some ways, will send half your stuff to another arena if the name
or number of that arena shows up at the beginning of a line. So if the word Ti
appears at the beginning of a line halfway through your ads, all the ads after that
may end up in Ti, which is closed and doesn't need ads. As a side note, sometimes
things move slowly, so don't wait until the last minute to send your ads and all.
If they get held up along the way, they may not show up until next turn. Happy
writing! -- Ed.
