TEAM SPOTLIGHT
"I'm telling you, he's a witch!" blurted Kismet, louder than she had intended.
"Don't you mean warlock?" corrected Estraya in an off-hand tone. The young
elf's attention was directed more towards the jewelry on display as the warriors
walked through the open-air market.
"Don't be patronizing," admonished Kismet. "You haven't even been listening."
"Sure we have," replied Estraya, still distracted. "But you may have to repeat
yourself. I mean... for Ahkeem's sake."
Ahkeem chuckled. He had watched these two go at it now for over an hour while
they shopped in the marketplace. Earlier in the day, they had spied a few of the
warriors of the new team Twilight Brigade in the Bazaar. Ever since, Kismet had not
stopped complaining about her defeat at the hands of Shivershriek a few weeks
previously.
Estraya, on the other hand, was less interested in her rant and more interested
in what might be the latest fashion at the market.
"Look," started Ahkeem, the dark Lubanese warrior, "I'm not doubting you. But
there are strong wards on the arena, specifically there to prevent magical
interference during the fights."
"Well, then," said Kismet, "I must have been poisoned somehow. I mean, how
would you explain it? I was beating him down to his knees, then WHAM, this
overwhelming exhaustion hits me and I just about fall down!"
"Perhaps you should stop snacking between practices," interjected Estraya,
trying not to snicker.
Ahkeem quickly jumped in, seeing Kismet's complexion redden. "I'll challenge
him, then. That'll prove to you that no magic was involved and he just got the best
of you. No one wins every fight. Some warriors are just better than others.
Practice harder, and next time you meet, I don't doubt you'll win. Now let's go to
the Bucket o' Blood and have a drink to calm you down."
"I don't know," smirked Estraya, squinting her eyes mischievously at Kismet. "I
think I like the witchcraft theory better."
Then with a wink at Ahkeem, the young elf poked her sister-teammate in the
belly. "Cow!" she taunted, and sprinted away down the street in the direction of the
tavern.
"I'll show you who's a cow!" shouted Kismet, following on her teammate's heels.
Ahkeem sighed, knowing he was in for a long night.

Larkin here once again, with more interviews from the tourney. This time I'm
talking to a new manager, so new he doesn't even have a manager name. "Sir... what
would you like me to call you, by the way?"
"Why do you have to call me anything? I don't understand why you want to
interview me. There are lots of great managers here who could probably tell you
stuff--"
"I'm looking for a new perspective, the point of view of someone who is just
starting out with the gladiatorial games."
"Oh. Well, I guess that would be me."
"Absolutely right! Tell me, what do you think of the tourney? This is your
first, right?"
"Right, my first," the young man agreed. "And it's GREAT! Everyone is just
great here! I mean, most of these managers, they're, like, legends, you know?
Everybody's heard of them, and they have stables of HUNDREDS of gladiators, and
they've been polishing their tricks for YEARS, and I didn't figure I had much of a
chance, you know?"
"The popular view is that no matter how much you know, the arena can always
throw a surprise at you--"
"Yeah, yeah, I've heard that. I don't know if I believe it, but I've heard it.
But that isn't the best thing about this tourney. The best thing is that everyone
here has been GREAT. Or else I didn't meet them--the ones that might not have been.
But I think I met just about everyone, and--"
"And they were great. I'm glad. But perhaps you could tell our readers a
little more, maybe tell them how these experienced managers were great to you?"
"Well, yeah, okay. It's that everyone was so friendly and helpful, see? The
ENTIRE Consortium talked to me about warrior design, for instance. I learned a lot
there. And, well, there was Mannequin, and The Greek Guy, and I actually met
Manager, too! And they were all really helpful. Advice, you know, and charts, and
all that stuff that was so confusing. It was just the best experience! I'm going to
do it again, for sure!"

Welcome COLLUSION COVE. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the
fights have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... What's with
NIGHTFALL? He actually beat THE DISCIPLES' JUDISSA, and walked away with 19 more
points from the fight. Laughs were big at TWILIGHT BRIGADE while they watched
DAWNBLADE clobber NIALL. He lost 12 points and got bruised from objects thrown from
the stands. What a role model for COLLUSION COVE's young 'uns! PERFECT SNOTLING
becomes Duelmaster, but don't bother to fight no more! I'm sure COLLUSION COVE is
excited about IMOTO-CHAN, the new Duelmaster from EX OBLIVIONE. (remember?) But
when you've seen as many as I have... Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to
practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. How
well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior, READY EDDIE! Don't
make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you.
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover
stupor. You young rapscallions, take note!
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
Are you as tired of reading this as I am of writing it? Actually, I guess I'm
writing it before you read it. Oh, well. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now.
