"I don't say it was the Black Kaliv himself, but someone up in Kurukar has realized that they're been spied on. We, ah, saw to it that the first of their counter-spies 'disappeared'--this is good country for that. But we won't catch them all, you know. And they're likely to catch some of ours." Vekhirn nodded. He was intelligent enough to draw conclusions from such clear facts as his spells and his helpers brought him, and his years at the Satrap's court had taught him a lot about maneuver, concealment, intrigue, all the tools the traitorous kaliv would be using. So he knew that the Fool's prediction was not just likely but certain. "I know you have magical defenses around this camp," the gladiator went on, "and we've got sentries out, but that isn't enough. We need to separate, establish more than one camp, maybe half a dozen smaller ones--" "And nobody should know where all the camps are," Moonjumper cut in. So no one person captured can give away all of us." "That will make it hard to coordinate our efforts," Vekhirn pointed out. "Right now, coordination is a low priority," she said. "Yes, all the information has to come together in one place to be studied, but that isn't the same, that can be dealt with some other way--" "All the information to be sent to Murska, to some 'safe drop' there," suggested Cadal, a Murskan gladiator. "Whoever receives the reports not to know who or where any of them come from." "Each independent group to have its own special area and situation to study, maybe," Fool's Gold added, "along with general observation. And you get clear out of this area, go to Murska or somewhere, to analyze the information as it comes to you." "I should be in the field investigating with the rest of you!" Vekhirn protested. "No, you should not." Moonjumper frowned at him. "You are the only one who understands enough of the general situation to draw all the threads together and weave a coherent fabric from them. And you're getting too old for field work. You would be no use to anybody if you died or were captured." "Besides, you're the only one the Satrap might listen to, when we have something to report," Cadal said. "If he'll listen at all," Fool's Gold added, frowning in turn. "After all, the Satrap IS married to the Black Kaliv's sister. That might bias him. Heck, if Lady Jasryala is 'in on' the Black Kaliv's plot, even only on the edge of it, she might be influencing the Satrap already." "So that when the time comes to take action," Moonjumper said, picking up the thread smoothly, "we may have to go outside the Glorious Empire for a force powerful enough and WILLING to do what must be done." Vekhirn rubbed his forehead tiredly and looked around at the camp. As camps in the wilderness went, it was a good one, secure, well-designed, and not at all haphazard. Which is as it should be, after all the months they'd been here. He suppressed a shudder, remembering the winter. But it was still a camp in the wilderness, and reluctant though he was to acknowledge it, he was getting a little old for this kind of life. The rest of his helpers, except for those standing watch, were gathered in an outer ring around the fire where Fool's Gold and his two henchmen were presenting their proposal. They appeared to be in agreement with the suggestions. The magician sighed. "You may be right, and you're certainly not wrong," he admitted. "What did you have in mind for the various 'special projects' which the various groups might undertake? I will confess that I have not given much thought to how it might be broken into smaller tasks." "We can't analyze the magical component," Moonjumper said, "but the physical part of it is clear enough." She began to count points off on her fingers. "There are Black Ships on the Trier, and while some are based in Kurukar itself, many are not. That other base or bases needs to be found and studied. There are Black Ships in Aljafir Bay. We don't know where they're based, although the north coast of the bay seems most likely. He has land forces. We don't know how many and we don't know enough about their composition--there have been confused reports of 'demons' with or even leading the forces. We suspect that he has sent agents into the central swamp south of Aljafir, and also into the swamp between Kurukar and Veastian." She switched hands. "And we know that he has agents at the Satrap's court, even if his sister Jasryala is NOT involved. It seems likely that he has agents in other nations and city-states, for instance, he must have agents in the Andorian League. Stormcrowe and North Fork, of course. Murska, Malcorn, maybe on the Isle of the Eye." Vekhirn held up a hand to stop her. "You have made your point, Moonlady," he said. "Organize that as you will, and I will give thought to dividing up the magical investigations, for it is true that I am only one man. Sometimes I grow tired, and the tired mind misses points of importance. And there must be others with the awareness of danger and the knowledge to resist. I shall see to that." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 595): VENTRIIE of DARK WARDS (Dr. Doom, mgr.) SPY REPORT So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and I'm going to give you a spy report!. Hey everybody, watch out for GLACIER, who flew up 12 points in the rankings after mashing XAVAN YOLE like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the sands. XAVAN YOLE lost to GLACIER and drops 7 points. Our battling duelmaster LOCKENLOAD has managed to hold the title, fending off M. CHARDINEE's none too subtle advances. Better luck next time, JURINE. 4 out of 5 gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the JURINE arena. Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the most interesting, though! Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle. I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights. Hasta la bye-bye.
