"I've got a bad feeling about this," Alta Chess muttered
"You have bad feelings about EVERYTHING fun," Chip Enser snapped. "Keep it to
yourself, why don't you?"
They had found a bit of rubble on a low hill that overlooked the main ruins of
Old Valamantis, and Chip figured if he could just make it to the top of that broken
wall, he'd have a really good view. He wanted a really good view, because he might
pick up some tips. He planned to be an adventurer as soon as he graduated, and an
adventurer needed all the tips he could get. The first shrub he grabbed to pull
himself up wasn't as solidly rooted as he'd hoped. In fact, it came away in his hand
and spilled him back down into the dust. But he was undaunted. He scrambled back to
his feet and dusted himself off (appearances were important, that was on page one of
the Hero Handbook).
He glanced over at his teammate. She hadn't noticed his fall, or rather, his
slither. He hadn't really FALLEN. In fact, she was cowering BEHIND the wall (just
like a girl!) and was looking back over her shoulder toward NEW Valamantis. Nothing
interesting was happening there!
But just in case, he turned to look also. A small cloud of dust was approaching
their hillock, moving in a straight line from the patched walls of the modern city.
After a moment, Chip was able to make out the man in the middle of the dust, shoving
his feet along in short, powerful steps (thus the dust) and pumping his arms: Train
of Public Transit. Well, he'd keep Alta company, a thing Chip had been just a little
bit guilty about--what if he went off to join in the adventure and left her here?
She'd probably end up being a Damsel in Distress and needing a rescue, and it would
be his fault, because she hadn't wanted to come out here in the first place. But
Train would take her back to town if he himself went elsewhere. So that was okay.
But he'd better not make any more mistakes getting up this wall. It was one thing to
risk looking silly in front of a teammate, but something else entirely with a near-
stranger looking on.
Using more care, Chip swarmed up the wall until he was a good five feet above
the top of the little hill. As he had hoped, the view was better, but he still
couldn't see much. Old Valamantis was simply too far away. With a feeling of
considerable smugness, Chip pulled a spyglass from his belt pouch and allowed the
sections to telescope outward, then held it to his eye.
Splendid! He might have been right down there among the...ah, resurrected
citizens of Old Valamantis.... A villainous looking lot. Probably all wizards.
Tall, skinny, bald, gray-skinned (odd, that, not really human, when you got down to
it), beaky noses, and dressed in sweeping robes with glittery embroidery that made
his eyes hurt if he looked at one of them too long. Wizards, without a doubt.
But where were the gladiators? He tried to turn the spyglass in another
direction and found that it resisted his efforts. Tried to lower it, and couldn't.
Oh, that was just FINE. How was he going to do his next arena match with a spyglass
stuck to his eye? Muttering a particularly grotesque blasphemy against Ankor the Sky
God, he managed to wrestle it downwards and leaned against the wall panting. He'd
probably given himself a black eye.
"There's Dark Carny!" Alta said beside him. "What's he doing?"
"He wanders around," Train rumbled. "No home life, no regular schedule. Never
make a good commuter. Besides, he doesn't BELONG here. Someone's reading the wrong
newsletter. Dark Carny should be in Tricorus."
"But he might make a bad commuter," she whispered. "What if he came here from
Tricorus? What if he raises the Black Big Top here?"

I am currently trying to put together a favorites chart for AD warriors. I
desperately need help with this. What I need are style, favorite rhythm (ex.:
hi/low), favorite weapons, and tactics. What would be great is if you could send me
a copy of the invite with the warrior's name, id#, and arena blacked out. This way,
I can verify that this is an actual warrior. Minis will work, too!
For those interested, I have both a challenge style vs. style and a match-up style
vs. style chart. There's about 250 fights calculated in these charts, and I'll be
happy to send a copy to anyone who asks. You can contact me (if you're a free world
player) at: Rick Stringer, Merit/East, SCI, P.O. Box 500, Georgetown, DE 19947-0500.
If you're in prison, just send a diplo to: Baphomet, Mgr. Knights Templar (568), DM
#47--North Fork. (I also have a lot of other charts and info for anyone who wants
it.) Thanks!
SPY REPORT
The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon VALAMANTIS,
for I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! SRETSAMLEUD? Who? DEVIL'S MAYHEM is the top
team these days, buddies! PUBLIC TRANSIT had cause to celebrate, after BUS got 19
points by beating ALTA CHESS. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and
practice more, after losing 17 points to BUS. (Discrete enough, ALTA CHESS?) YOU
successfully staved off a grab for the roses by TRAIN of PUBLIC TRANSIT. Does
VALAMANTIS have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in
VALAMANTIS is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the
mountaintops, so stand the warriors of THE BEARS, alone and unchallenged. The
warriors of THE BEARS found their efforts at combat frustrated as DEVIL'S MAYHEM
apparently had more important things to do than fight. Is it charming personality?
Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, DUEL 2 is the most
challenged warrior.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! Questions are being raised about the disposing of severed body parts in the
arena. A certain tavern in VALAMANTIS would I avoid!
Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the
wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. VALAMANTIS, I leave
you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at Drake's Lodge. 'Til next
time-- Novgorodny Vir

Bus -- No, it's okay. I've never been laughed at by a bus before. It's a new
experience. -- Eb Gollu
P.S. How about if you collect up a bunch of people and publicly transport them out
to Old Valamantis to see what's going on, eh?
Crysalis -- Darn. Somehow I figured you'd be slower. Ouch. -- Chip Enser
Talk about adding insult to injury, after he beat me, the Userous Merchant tried to
sell me insurance! Like I'd even need it if he'd been more of a gentleman. -- Bensi
Durn
Poor Bensi, she just doesn't have the knack. *I* found the Merchant to be entirely
courteous and helpful. -- Alta Chess
Did you know that the Fratsfa Slave bleaches his hair? Fact. -- Doc Felle
Bus -- Yeah, well (sigh), anything to support continued public transit. Within
reason. -- Eb Gollu
Train -- I assure you, WE are relying on you...not to kill us! (coaxingly) How
about a stroll out toward the ruins, just to see what's going on, eh? -- Alta Chess
