Not that a connected narrative is critical, but just for the sake of "doing it right." Chip swarmed up the broken wall until he was a good five feet above the top of the little hill. As he had hoped, the view was better, but he still couldn't see much. Old Valamantis was simply too far away. With a feeling of considerable smugness, Chip pulled a spyglass from his belt pouch and allowed the sections to telescope outward, then held it to his eye. Splendid! He might have been right down there among the...ah, resurrected citizens of Old Valamantis.... A villainous looking lot. Probably all wizards. Tall, skinny, bald, gray-skinned (odd, that, not really human, when you got down to it), beaky noses, and dressed in sweeping robes with glittery embroidery that made his eyes hurt if he looked at one of them too long. Wizards, without a doubt. But where were the gladiators? Several gladiators were attempting to enter the old city with the intention of foiling the wizards. He should be able to see them from here. He tried to turn the spyglass in another direction and found that it resisted his efforts. Tried to lower it, and couldn't. Oh, that was just FINE. How was he going to do his next arena match with a spyglass stuck to his eye? Muttering a particularly grotesque blasphemy against Ankor the Sky God, he managed to wrestle it downwards and leaned against the wall panting. He'd probably given himself a black eye. "There's Dark Carny!" Alta said beside him. "What's he doing?" "He wanders around," Train rumbled. "No home life, no regular schedule. Never make a good commuter. Besides, he doesn't BELONG here. Someone's reading the wrong newsletter. Dark Carny should be in Tricorus." "But he might make a bad commuter," she whispered. "What if he came here from Tricorus? What if he raises the Black Big Top here?" "That's not Dark Carny," Chip Enser said suddenly. He'd been using his spyglass, but holding it a little way out from his eye. This made it less efficient, but at least he could lower it when he wanted to. "It's an imposter." Alta shuddered. "The very IDEA of an imposturous Dark Carny is scary! Even worse than the real thing, I'm sure." "If you would be so good," Train murmured, taking the spyglass out of Chip's hand. He raised it to his eye, using it with familiarity and ease. (Chip found himself wishing it would stick to Train's face permanently and put out his headlight.) "Ah, I recognize that man. A shipment...two cars. Coming from, ahem, somewhere else--I'm not at liberty to reveal certain details of our routing, you understand. He paid cash." "What was his name?" Chip demanded. Train lowered the spyglass and raised an eyebrow. "We do not do business by 'talking out of school' about our customers. Besides, names were not exchanged." He turned his back on Chip rather pointedly. "There were sounds, animal sounds, from his shipment, though he didn't request any special handling." He looked a little uncomfortable. "Roars and screams." "He couldn't have brought his 'shipment' here," Chip said, frowning. "There's no train station in Valamantis. Trains don't even EXIST in this world." "They were piggy-back containers. We transferred them to flatbed drays." Train gestured toward the side, where a grove of trees nearly hid another outlying ruin. "You can just see them over there. Black containers, with a red stripe." "And there's one of the clowns!" Alta said in a tone of horror. Both men turned to follow the line of shaking finger. It would have been hard to say whether the figure was a mime or a clown, since it was all black and white. The over-sized shoes suggested that it was, in fact, a clown, though it looked like none they had ever seen before. Its face was blank and white, not simply because the features hadn't been painted. There WERE no features. Which made its determined advance on their lookout point all the more unnerving. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 504): JEJUNE of MANNEQUIN'S BEST (Mannequin, mgr.) SPY REPORT It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty, and despair! The boys at SRETSAMLEUD left the arena dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by DEVIL'S MAYHEM. Good show! Practice pays for EB GOLLU, who pummelled THE USEROUS MERCHANT, to pocket 17 points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 10 points to TRAIN. (Discrete enough, CHIP ENSER?) A certain someone saw HOLLY MACKEREL at The Wasteland Bar with the shakes, and now she fails to show up to defend hers throne. What a pathetic slob! What can be a greater victory? TRAIN has taken his place as the top, as VALAMANTIS' new Duelmaster. So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me. A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of SRETSAMLEUD, alone and unchallenged. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of PUBLIC TRANSIT, so did that sorry team shy from SRETSAMLEUD If challenges were horses, BUS could open up a fast food joint! As a confidence booster, BUS challenged ALTA CHESS, down 28 points. Do you also slay vicious rodents in your spare time, BUS? BUS bested ALTA CHESS. The whole thing leaves a bitter memory. Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors. Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor. Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. VALAMANTIS, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Wasteland Bar. We've all been there at times. At least you TRY to speak and make the interesting a more lively place, which is more than can be said for some. See you on the sands! The funniest thing about your ad to me was the "ALL" part. You could have named us all by name and barely used more letters. Which says something considering my name is very long.... -- Assurnasirbanipal, mgr. Public Transit Celestial Fury -- Alta's right, you're too wound up, too angry. It isn't good for your health, young man, and I strongly, very STRONGLY advise you to go off on a vacation, relax, maybe do a little fishing, read a book, sleep under a tree, something like that. You'll be old before your time. -- Doc Felle Crysalis -- Ah, cursed by your name, I bet. You're just too slow, and it isn't your fault. It's the idea of being named after the slowest of slow arenas. You should talk to your manager about this. -- Chip Enser I consider it civicly unwise to let all these Dangerous Criminals wander around, and even if you keep them confined to the arena, it's STILL a bad idea. It gives the rest of us gladiators a bad name; people get to thinking we're ALL criminals. Something should be done about this. -- Bensi Durn Wow, no WONDER the "Captured Orc" is so mean! He's an elf, and you know how elves are, they HATE to be mistaken for orcs. Even worse than I would, and I'd hate it, too. I'm a Shew and proud of it, and everyone knows that elves are even prouder. Practically cornered the market on "proud," elves have. -- Eb Gollu I will heartily second Bensi's comments about the Dangerous Criminal. Keep him away from me! -- Alta Chess Assur -- Valamantis is singing? Ah! I WONDERED what that noise was. How can we make it stop? A thrown boot? A fire hose and cold water? An attack of zombies? A public transit strike? There must be SOMETHING we can do! -- Alta Chess, spokesgladiator for the Middle Way Dincuru, or if I may be so bold, Din -- This kind of thing happens, and we all know it, so no problem. I send my personals by lightning pigeon, or they wouldn't be here, either. If I tried to send p-mail strats...no, it won't ever happen. Maintenance for me, but personals. -- Nick, the Middle Way P.S. If all my warriors fought like champs, I wouldn't recognize them. P.P.S. No spotlight last time, because (smug look) I was in Hawaii. But I'm trying to get something organized in time for this turn. Crysalis -- Well deserved kill! That bum was the weak link anyway. Only thing he had going for him was speed. You sure made my manager contemplate the bloodfeud though. 30 F.E. vs. 6 F.E. Is that a death wish or what? I don't know if I have enough skills yet so I will wait and let him decide. -- Celestial Fury Alta Chess -- You keep learning those decisive skills and soon nobody is going to stop you. Oh a orc (silly grin) way cool. I don't know if you're ugly or pretty the way you hide behind that helmet. -- Celestial Fury P.S. Helm very ugly. Doc Feely -- Show me the Dangerous Criminal and you shall see my FURY! -- Celestial Fury Eb -- The storm has calmed down for the upcoming mail in, so train or study hard! Hate to see you stuck in it. Hate to see you as the whooping boy of Valamantis also. If you are still using the shield "I" would try punching instead. -- Buddy Lee The Middle Way 10 -- I usually don't challenge any team this much, but since I opened the door on you I might as well keep going. If I don't I'll get you anyway. Don't want you thinking I'm picking on you guys. -- Buddy Lee All -- What happened to everybody?! This place used to be a big bad 'arsh arena. Don't get me wrong; we're still tough, but five teams? Where's Mr. Barnabas? Abandon the keep to adventure? I shall hope Papa Bear stay a while. Is this a sucky arena or what? I don't want to pedal my tricycle back to Transel and rebuild.
