Bitulf watched silently, listening to the desperate pleas of gladiators with
their managers, asking for one more chance. Even if death wasn't physically real in
the Dark Arena, every warrior knew it was the end of a career. The old man shook his
head in disdain, his long, grey streaked hair dancing about his shoulders. 'Meet
your end with some dignity,' he thought to himself.
A much younger woman placed her hand on his arm. Though he was getting past his
prime, the arm was still firm and fit enough to wield his scimitar. Her clear blue
eyes looked at him pleadingly.
"Bitulf, you don't need to do this. There's a chance the leg will heal enough
for you to keep fighting."
Bitulf met her gaze and smiled, unable to keep his stern look. Draumr Vefa had
been like a daughter to him--the whole stable was as dear to him as family, which
made his decision even harder.
"Perhaps, child, but no matter. Were it not the leg, it would be some other
ailment." He took her hand in his and kissed it gently. "Besides, now that Snorri
has vanished, we need someone to manage the team. You four may be good warriors, but
you aren't good for much else."
Draumr smiled, seeing through the poor insult. "Will you send for Svipa?"
"In time. We need five good fighters, and Svipa was one of the best Norsk ever
had."
Draumr turned her gaze away from Bitulf's piercing brown eyes. He chuckled
lightly and turned her to face him. "It's time to put past grievances aside. We
need to stand beside one another."
Draumr Vefa glanced around at the waiting doomed. "Do you think anyone here
will remember us?"
"It's been a long time. I only saw one familiar manager on the roster, and
there was no ill will between us."
A guard came over and jostled Bitulf. "You're next, old man."
Bitulf grabbed his scimitar and gave Draumr a kiss on her cheek. "Good luck on
your own fight. I'll see you back at the guildhouse." He stepped through the
portcullis and out onto the blood-drenched sands.

A few miles north of Dal Shang:
Damoreth Stenn, dragging the trash bin behind him, opened another cupboard
carefully, standing out of the path of anything that might decide to spring out at
him. There had been spiders and rats, so far, but he wouldn't be astonished at
something larger. Not that the rat had been a small one. It was amazing and
depressing what happened to a house when you left it vacant for a few years. The
mushrooms in the cellar were okay. Disconcerting, but okay. He didn't mind a
mushroom with his steak now and then, and he was almost sure the ones in the cellar
were edible. But he didn't like spiders, and he'd be damned if he'd eat a rat. He
took the rake he'd brought with him and dragged the whatever-it-was, mold and all,
out of the closet, catching it neatly in his trash bin. Several women from the
village had agreed to come in and scrub, once he got rid of the...stuff. But the bin
was almost full, and he hadn't gotten to the pantry yet.
He didn't even want to think about the belfry. What if there were bats!
Maybe he could make his first house party a Halloweeen-themed gathering....

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
What gives? I beat a stand-in and they give me the throne? It seems I had to work a
lot harder for it the first several times I have had it. I am challenging no one
this turn, on account that most of the challenger champions are inactive. If this
turn goes just as expected, we could see three Dark Toads in challenger champions and
no other active warriors. Sad, people. It's pathetic to even think this, but the
arena needs Paranoia back. At least he gave us a challenge. Ah well, I expect
Amplitur and I will graduate before too many more turns and this will cease to be an
issue. -- Masood
SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly DAL SHANG games. LEOPARD caught the eye of many in
the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested NORMAR THE BLOND and was awarded
13 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, WAIS put down
MURGON, causing him to lose 9 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing
has MASOOD in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's
proven his combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6
die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7!
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city DAL SHANG. DAL SHANG, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of
thy guilds is THE IMMORTALS, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels.
Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part
of last week avoiding THE IMMORTALS. Indeed it was DARK TOADS. Mighty fighters
cannot but expect competition from those below. MAY-LING SHEN take warning! You
have more than a few enemies in DAL SHANG.
What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his
foe's mortality? I must report the passing of CHURRO THE HOOK, veteran of many
duels. 15-40-1 final record His was not illustrious--but death plays no favorites.
This week's duel proved deadly to CHURRO THE HOOK as he fell to the more renowned
warrior, MASOOD. How will REFUGEES find revenge? Some say a warrior is judged by
the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on
the belt!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in DAL SHANG. Nice atmosphere you have here! More than a sharp eye must I
keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari
await me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often.
The wise are angered by the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes
