A few miles north of Dal Shang:

Damoreth Stenn, dragging the trash bin behind him, opened another cupboard
carefully, standing out of the path of anything that might decide to spring out at
him. There had been spiders and rats, so far, but he wouldn't be astonished at
something larger. Not that the rat had been a small one. It was amazing and
depressing what happened to a house when you left it vacant for a few years. The
mushrooms in the cellar were okay. Disconcerting, but okay. He didn't mind a
mushroom with his steak now and then, and he was almost sure the ones in the cellar
were edible. But he didn't like spiders, and he'd be damned if he'd eat a rat. He
took the rake he'd brought with him and dragged the whatever-it-was, mold and all,
out of the closet, catching it neatly in his trash bin. Several women from the
village had agreed to come in and scrub, once he got rid of the...stuff. But the bin
was almost full, and he hadn't gotten to the pantry yet. Or the cellar. There was
supposed to be wine in the cellar, but what if all that remained down there were
drunken monsters?
He didn't even want to think about the belfry. What if there were bats! He
hated bats! They were rats with wings, worse even than plain rats. Maybe he should
get Marian of Ravenskeep to advise him. He'd bet on ravens to oust the bats.
And his guests would be arriving any time now to help him celebrate the
beginning of the new year. A better year for all of them and for Dal Shang, he
hoped, but a new one, anyway. No second-hand years for him!
Which brought up the question of a guest list. Marian of Ravenskeep,
definitely. But if he didn't ask anybody else, it would be kind of pointed, kind of
OBVIOUS, wouldn't it?
Thoughtful now, he shoved his trash bin out to the road where the compost
collector could empty it, then sat down with several newsletters to ponder the
question of guests.

Another round, another turn on the throne. Wow, that sounds almost like I belong
here. At least this turn I am a challenger champion. I am hopeful I can hold onto
the throne at least one more turn. I again offer my challenge to Koreen. I wish
everyone good luck and hopefully we all live to see another day. -- Wais

                                      SPY REPORT

Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out DAL SHANG to
see what's new. TOO GOOD FOR ME like really fought hard to move up to 4th from 8th.
Way to go! Talk about yer big time losers! MURGON got smashed by MAY-LING SHEN, and
lost 15 points! This Duelmaster is like something else! WAIS stopped DURVAN dead in
his tracks! I hear the top team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep.
They want photogenic fighters for PR photos.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. JACK ATTACK was the most avoided team. Is a 13-18-0 record really
that scary? Is there some deep dark secret why DARK TOADS' been avoiding JACK ATTACK
so much? Or is it just that they're too scared? Like, is MARDEN VOSS popular, or
what? He was challenged the most in all of DAL SHANG! He's got a 21-24-0, is that
good? People were asking me did ONE EYED JACK REALLY challenge MARDEN VOSS? (all
right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or
anything, but MARDEN VOSS wants me to write about it since he was defeated by ONE
EYED JACK. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Hey you guys, don't you think your
families would like to hear from you? Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Koreen -- Well, I'm sorry you're not as honored by the title shots as you could be...
I'm going to keep them up as long as I can. -- Wais

One Eyed Jack -- That affects your depth perception, you know. You shouldn't have
become a gladiator without depth perception. -- Marden Voss the falsely sympathetic
but actually glad to have won a fight

Lepar -- Oh yes, a toad. Of course. Just what I was, ah, hoping to see. More or
less. Well, okay, I was HOPING to see a toad stunned and lying on the sand waiting
to be buried in it, but I suppose that's asking too much. -- Durvan

I suppose a win and a skill is better than nothing. -- Jesse Tavan

May-Ling Shen -- You did fine, young lady. Another time, maybe you'll do better, but
you know it isn't proper for a woman to defeat a man at a manly art like dueling. --
Ming the Terribly Surprised but Happy

Even a loss and a skill is better than nothing, I guess. -- Dilys tyl Kogan

TigToad -- If time permits, I'll get the party started this turn. At least I don't
have to PLOT it. -- Li Dan

Wais -- It's a gift. -- Murgon

Bal Iss -- Try socks. They might help. -- Dilys

Wais -- Hmm, we certainly taught each other well. I rather like that part of it.
And YOU have to write the column, not me. I like that, too. -- Koreen

Jeanine -- I knew someone named Jeanine. One of my mother's friends. I don't think
you're her, are you? -- Murgon

For a standby, Dengan the Trader taught very well. I was impressed, and also
pleased. -- Konga Dilli

The Professor -- So you're a shark, are you? Well, I'm a fisherman, and I know what
to do with a shark! -- Churro the Spike
P.S. Good steaks, sharks.

Magn Gandr -- Well, my teammates kept hollering at me to "use my head," so I did....

8 December 2003
Greetings! I would like to invite everyone to Jhans (DM 36) for the first annual kLk
St. Valentine's Day Massacre (kill contest). We will start the contest off with the
ceremonial burning of the Andorian flag on turn 450. (Six turns away. Roughly mid-
February.) The contest will run for 10 turns. On turn 461, 3 separate victors will
be announced. Team with the most kills, warrior with the most kills, and alliance
with the most kills. Prizes will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most
kills and to the manager of the warrior with the most kills. The prizes will
probably be team roll-ups. The number of roll-ups has yet to be determined. The
contest is sponsored by Jhans' newest, (but by the time the contest starts) largest
alliance, the kLk (pronounced "klick"). -- Polarius, mgr. of Blitzkrieg DM 36
