                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

Bal Iss gathered his cloak around him as he left the tavern, the odor of stale
ale and wood smoke blown away by the chill winter air. He knew that he should have
been back to the guild hours ago, but after three moons of training back north, he
felt he owed himself a little revelry. He smiled to himself in justification--hadn't
he left the bevy of very willing wenches back in the bar, and now walked home alone?
That should count for something in Bitulf's eyes, he thought...but wouldn't, the
nagging voice in the back of his mind taunted. He waved the voice away, willing to
accept the consequences of his choice.
He smelt the blood and fear moments before he heard the cries. His hands slid
under his cloak to draw his scimitars, only too late remembering he walked the
streets unarmed. He dismissed this as a minor inconvenience as he darted down the
street, toward the alley from whence the cries came.
His silver eyes shifted red, adjusting to the darkness as he turned off the
lighted thoroughfare and entered the darkened alley. It took him only a second to
assess the situation before him. Two demons in man-like form were tearing viciously
at the throat of a downed man, while a third toyed with a young girl. Bal Iss hissed
at this fiend as he approached.
"Release her!" His hands curled, ready to strike at the man-beast.
The creature hesitated as he saw Bal Iss approach, obviously without the fear
the fiend was used to causing in his victim. It smiled nervously, and long talons
grew from the fingers at the girl's throat. Before Bal Iss could cross the space
between them, the demon's claws ripped open the girl's throat, and it spun the girl
at Bal Iss. Bal Iss was struck full in the face by the erupting gout of life blood
from the girl's ruined throat. He caught the girl and watched helplessly as the
maiden gurgled her last breath at him, the terror in her eyes fading to be replaced
by the glaze of death.
The one that had killed the girl snarled to his companions, and the three of
them turned to face Bal Iss. Bal Iss eased the girl to the ground and rose to face
the creatures. He was prepared to do battle, no matter how daunting, when the sound
of footsteps from behind drew the attention of all the combatants. Guardsmen,
lanterns in hand, came rushing up the alley. Before the light reached them, the
three man-things melted into the shadows. Bal Iss was less fortunate. The light
from the lantern splashed on him, and he knew the image he must have presented; wild
glowing eyes in a blood covered face, with two torn bodies at his feet. As the first
guardsman cried halt, Bal Iss leaped up and grabbed the edge of the roof, swinging
himself up and vanishing into the darkness above.
Bal Iss paused, wanting to pursue the killers, but uncertain what direction they
had gone. Instead, he lay still and listened as the guards investigated the
situation.
"You get a look at it, Gnor?"
"Aye, a wild eyed demon, it was. Look at the bodies...surely this is the same
creature that has been killing off citizens for the last three moons."
"Looked as if it took to the roofs...do you think we should follow?"
"I'll not be going up there after it...that thing weren't human, and they don't
pay me enough to face some demon. Best leave that to the Hunters."
"True enough. Let's get back and make the report, before the trail grows too
cold."
As the men moved out of the alley, Bal Iss dropped back into the darkness. He'd
only have a few moments to investigate the bodies, but it would be enough. He knew
already what he would find. A good portion of the man's blood had been drained, and
no doubt the woman's would have been as well, had he not arrived...he couldn't help
thinking that had he arrived just a bit sooner...but he pushed the thought aside. He
had not hesitated; there was no way he could have prevented it. He cleaned his face
as best he could, then pulled his hood over his head and made his way back to the
guild house.'
As he had suspected, Bitulf was up, going over paperwork in a small rear office
when he got back to the house. Bal Iss knocked lightly on the door and stepped in.
Bitulf glanced up and shook his head.
"Yes, consider yourself duly chastised for the late hour. I really don't have
time, nor the concern, to deal with it."
Bal Iss shook his head. "This is a little more important than that. There is a
problem in the city...vampires. I came across two on my way home from the tavern.
Reasonably fresh, I'd say no more than a month or two turned, which means some elder
is probably trying to create a hive here."
Bitulf scratched his beard and frowned. "Vampires? Are you sure?"
Bal Iss fixed Bitulf with a withering glare. "Bitulf, I think I would know my
own kind!"
Bitulf nodded and gave a slight shrug. "Yes, I suppose you would."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Well now, that's a big oops on my part. Darkfist was rather too busy lately to
remind me to say a few words to the arena last turn and I, of course, spend all my
free time practicing so between us it just slipped our minds. In his defense I guess
I'd have to say that he's had 3 warriors on the throne in 2 other arenas the past few
turns so perhaps his oversight is understandable? I'd like to thank Jeanine for the
skills and the throne. I'll bet she's glad to be ranked out of Gizmo's reach, were
he to resume active fighting as well....
Durvan was so little challenge, I only had time to learn one thing from the
experience. It also seemed that he learned as little as I did. This may bring my 2+
skills per fight average down if it happens too often. How 'bout we encourage him to
wear some heavy armor next time we meet to prolong things a bit?
Looks like Marden Voss or Murgon up next. Both have a lot of experience so
hopefully it will be a good day for schooling.

                                      SPY REPORT

The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon DAL SHANG, for
I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! SAND DANCERS? Who? REFUGEES is the top team
these days, buddies! Practice pays for JESSE TAVAN, who pummelled MALDI
STONEBREAKER, to pocket 25 points. MARDEN VOSS certainly had a baffled expression on
his face, after losing to METHADONE and losing 21 points in the process!
WHATCHAMACALLIT successfully staved off a grab for the roses by MURGON of REFUGEES.
Does DAL SHANG have no one talented enough to dethrone him? So who was the warrior
seen charging into immovable walls and challenging dead trees? Someone's got a basic
problem...
So much to report, so little time! Perhaps the warriors of OZ 3 should take up
some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... The warriors of OZ 3 found their
efforts at combat frustrated as TOO GOOD FOR ME apparently had more important things
to do than fight. Everyone is famous for fifteen minutes, and CHURRO THE SPIKE is it
right now. Most challenged warrior. Isn't REFUGEES proud! Them's the breaks,
CHURRO THE SPIKE. Expecting fair challenges from CARD SHARKS is evidently too much
to ask. Warriors of DAL SHANG! Do you wish your reputations tainted by the base
challenge of THE PROFESSOR?
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
Leave me now, you base fools! As if buffeted by forces of nature beyond my
control, I must take my leave of this place. Can anything compare to the pleasure of
writing Spyreports for DAL SHANG? On that giddy note I take my leave-- Novgorodny
Vir

MONGO'S MARDI GRAS MADNESS DUELMASTERS AUCTION

Mongo, aka Matt McIntosh and ex-Warden of the Dark Circle, is auctioning off his
entire collection of Duelmasters warriors and stables. Don't miss out on this chance
to own some fantastic warriors! There are ADM warriors available in every class from
Primus to Freshmen, as well as over a dozen Basic stables.
Does a Slasher with +4 attack, +4 decisiveness, +3 initiative and +2 riposte
sound good? How about a Lunger who received the benefit of a TC prize, has TVed
three times after graduating--and still hasn't maxed out his skills!? How about a
Striker in the Freshmen class who has decisiveness for a favorite learn and the MAUL
for a favorite weapon!?
Or perhaps you prefer playing in Basic. Then how does a stable with four Adept
class warriors who have a combined record of 41-19-9 sound? Or maybe a stable with
three 21-Will warriors? Or perhaps a stable with four Initiates and a Rookie who
have a combined record of 23-6-1?
The quality of the lots is excellent. All you need to view and bid on the lots
is go to:
          http://members.aol.com/jvmerlino/mardigras.html
If you want to be on the mailing list to receive regular updates on the auction,
just send an e-mail to JVMerlino@aol.com. Merlin, aka John Merlino and also an ex-
Warden of the Dark Circle, will be running this auction for me. I just moved to New
Orleans and am likely currently stumbling around the French Quarter...because it's
Mardi Gras! So I have named my auction in honor of this occasion.
The auction will start on Saturday, March 13th, 2004, and will continue for

several weeks. But you should get your bids in early if you want your best chance at
owning any of these fantastic warriors and stables.
Many thanks to all for your interest and your bids,

Mongo
