Lirith Kai Edition
On the Trier near Dal Shang:
Lord Protector Amplitur scowled impartially at the mist-shrouded new island off
the coast and his fellow Dalshani and sometime opponent Damoreth Stenn. "I never
heard about any 'lost city' around here."
"It was lost a long time ago," Stenn said, shrugging. "Why should you?"
"You knew it was there!"
Stenn shrugged and lifted his oars out of the water. "I knew there was
SOMETHING there, 'cause it's a navigation hazard," he corrected. He glanced over his
shoulder at the risen island, then at the shore, gauging their speed. "I'd expect to
find wrecked ships on it, once we get there. IF we get there. The current's tricky.
But I never heard about it being a CITY, and I don't think it is. That island can't
be more than a mile the long way, and that's too small for a real city."
Amplitur, who was facing forward, focused his attention through the jewel he
wore on his forehead. Its effect in this instance was to enable him to see through
the mist that veiled the mysterious island. "Maybe not a city," he said after a
moment, "but it's built up--in fact, the whole island from the waterline on up seems
to be built over. No bare rock. Well, maybe... there is a lot of mud. But I'd bet
on no unbuilt ground. Structures--towers--"
"Probably what wrecked ships when it was sunken."
"Probably. Walls, domes, bridges between towers, narrow roads." He paused to
examine the approaching island very carefully. "I don't sense anything living. No
warmth. No... I don't think there's any movement...."
"Don't second-guess," Stenn advised. "Just report what you see."
"It might be mist drifting between the... drifting around. Or birds. Gulls?
They'd be looking for anything edible in the mud, wouldn't they?"
Stenn checked their position and movement again. He had stopped rowing, and the
current was drifting them closer to the island, but not on a direct course to it.
"Gulls are alive," he pointed out. "You just said there wasn't anything alive. And
gulls are noisy, too. We'd hear 'em."
Amplitur opened his mouth to answer, then collapsed with a groan as his jewel
suddenly flared sun-bright. At the same time, the boat began moving toward the
island more rapidly. Stenn cursed and bent to the oars, battling the sudden current.
There was no time to check on his friend, not if he didn't want them both shipwrecked
on the island, but he could see that Amplitur was still breathing. For now, that
would have to be enough, because the current was strong and the risk of stranding
great. As he rowed, he cursed himself silently. He should have expected the new
island to disturb the currents along this coast. Well, in a way, he had, but he
hadn't expected a current that drove right toward the island. It defied logic, not
that logic had a lot to do with sailing, sometimes. But... no. This was too pat.
This said "planning." Someone or something wanted them to land on that island, and
it was his automatic response to resist any such manipulation.
But the current was very strong.
Dal Shang, Provincial Archives:
"Okay, let's go over this one more time," Marian of Ravenskeep said. Her voice
was tight with controlled irritation. "There are maps in your files that actually
SHOW this 'new' island. It's even got a name: Kaseltor. But you have NOTHING else
that tells anything about it, that even mentions it. No deeds, no tax rolls, no--"
The archival clerk raised his eyebrows slightly and looked down his nose at her.
Marian wondered how much of his unhelpfulness was because she had lived in for some
time (long enough to graduate from the arena) in Mordant, how much was a taste for
petty tyranny, and how much was actual lack of information.
Her companion Whatchamacallit laid his axe carefully on the counter and leaned
toward the clerk. "It's important she gets the information," he growled. One blunt
finger tapped the letter of introduction she had brought with her. "The Lord
Governor wants her to find out about this island." He scowled, bushy eyebrows
meeting over a hooked nose. "I wouldn't want to think you were dragging your feet."
Had the situation been less urgent, Marian might have laughed at the clerk's
expression. Whatcha was a Dwarf (or in Adantri terms, a very short, very hairy human
who liked being underground), and this did not endear him to the most orthodox of the
city's citizens. And a clerk in the Archives was bound to be orthodox. But Whatcha
was also the Duelmaster, and even those citizens of the city (they were numerous) who
didn't attend the fights heard about them. It might be dangerous to annoy a
duelmaster.... Of course, if Whatcha killed the clerk, he would be arrested,
duelmaster or no, but what good would that do for a dead clerk?
"We don't have anything about that island," the clerk muttered, "but you might
find something at the Ko Shang Monastery."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Murgon, I always seem to learn Decise from you, too bad it was only one this time. I
think I need to graduate so I can find some better teachers. If I've won again this
turn (knock on wood), I'm just one more win away!

SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to DAL SHANG once again! What's with DILYS TYL KOGAN? She
actually beat DAL SHANG's HELVAN QUICKHAND, and walked away with 19 more points from
the fight. Laughs were big at DAL SHANG while they watched MASTER OF THE EDGE
clobber DURVAN. He lost 12 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the
stands. Try as he might, MURGON wasn't good enough at persuading WHATCHAMACALLIT to
step down from the Duelmaster's throne... I suppose you want to hear some rumors and
dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports. The
most avoided team was REFUGEES. Management must be dealin', as the boys at TOO GOOD
FOR ME ain't reelin'! REFUGEES' mad!
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Here's some advice: study your opponent, master
many skills, fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and
good luck. Until next time,-- Olaf Modeen
