Simtakka:

"Well, that's it." The gladiator Man-O-War looked back into the building that
had been his home for so many years. The walls were empty and no furniture remained,
nothing but the shell of the house, as empty as when they'd moved in all those years
ago. He shook his head.
It was just a house, wood, stone, and plaster, but it held so many memories. He
had been with Killjoy when she first bought it, when the first gladiators on the team
had picked their rooms. So many comrades had come and gone through those doors.
Some had made it to the Isle: simple people like Crossbones and Scumball, crazy
people like Wild Weasel and Gidtron, people he wished he had never known like
Witchblade and that demonic Hobgoblin. Well, Hobgoblin hadn't made it to the Isle,
but even after his official death, the half-demon had caused the city plenty of
grief. And there had been his own good friends, Warblade and Smoke.... He saluted
them mentally, "Congratulations, Lords Protector."
He slipped the key into the lock and turned it, locking away old memories.
There would be new memories and new comrades.
"Why Dal Shang?" The annoying voice was that of Long Shot, the team's current
problem-child.
Man-O-War looked over at the young gladiator, who was having a problem balancing
the last bag on the cart. "Joy said she had old friends in Dal Shang, and she wants
to meet up with them. Plus she believes they will never close that arena."
"It's a nice city." Chiana's voice was soft.
Nice? A port city with an arena? But maybe it was. "Let's move," Man-O-War
said. "Joy and Synthia should be there by now." When the other two were settled
onto the load, he climbed onto the driver's seat and flicked the reins. The horses
leaned into their harnesses and the long journey began.

Dal Shang:

"Now, THIS is a city!" Killjoy looked up at the elaborately carved gate,
gleaming with fresh paint in the morning sunlight. When she had decided to restart
Til Death Do Us Part, she had visited all four of the cities in Lirith Kai which
still had active arenas. This one was the best. Though no arenas here or in
Alastari were as big and bustling as they had once been, with Simtakka's arena
closed, this one felt most welcoming to her.
The taller blonde woman didn't look at Joy, she was staring around at the tall
buildings and long streets. "Yes, it is, and I don't think I'll miss Simtakka at
all."
Killjoy glanced at her companion and away. She herself would miss Simtakka,
even more, she'd miss the people she'd known there. But this was their home now, and
she was determined to like it. She pushed a key and a map into Synthia's hand.
"Take this and find our new guildhouse," she said. "It's outside the city walls,
near the arena. I have to get to the Commission office before it closes."
"Sure. Have fun, Joy!" Synthia said, smiling. The two of them parted, riding
in opposite directions.

The arena was easy to find, standing taller than any of the nearby buildings
outside the wall of the city, but one house among many near it was harder. The map
was less help than Synthia had expected. There were streets marked that she couldn't
find, unless some of the alleys counted. And if some did, why not all? But there
weren't that many marked on the map. She got lost more than once, and for a while
despaired of ever finding the new guildhouse.
She rode by the house twice before she realized it was to be their guildhouse,
her new home. It was big. Two stories, if the ceilings were high, but maybe three
if they weren't. No windows on the outside, so she couldn't tell. She dismounted,
flipping her horse's reins over the railing at the side of the front steps, tugged
her shirt straight, and climbed to the door. Five steps, and the door, of two
panels, was wide enough for three people to pass through abreast. She unlocked it
and stepped into the house.
The first room seemed too large to be called a hallway, but that must be its
function. There were stairs at one side, and doors at the sides and farther end. A
very high ceiling. Her footsteps echoed. She opened doors and peeked through,
trying to get the feeling of the place. Common rooms where they could gather and
relax, a dining hall, a kitchen, a room with racks on the wall that looked suitable
for an armory. Behind the house was an enclosed yard that would be perfect for
training. A small stable, and a bathhouse.
Synthia smiled. "This is going to be great!" She went back to the entry hall
and the stairs, looked up into the shadows of the second floor. "Now to pick my own
room...."

     "That's it?" Killjoy asked, surprised.
The stout clerk smiled at her. "That's it." He thumped one last stamp onto her
papers and handed them back. "We're glad to have you transfer your team to this
arena. Enjoy your stay, ma'am."
"Well...thank you, then." She stood to leave.
The clerk stood also and extended his hand. "Good luck to you and your team,
Joy."
Joy shook his hand and left the office, going back to the busy street. Catching
up her horse's reins, she paused. No need to rush back to the guildhouse, Synthia
wouldn't be expecting her right away. She's walk a little and see more of the town.
About half way between the registration office and her new guildhouse, just
outside the city wall, she came across a small pub called The Drunken Dragon. The
day was a warm one, and she was thirsty. She shrugged. "Why not?"
She flipped her horse's reins over the hitching rail and walked through the
doors.
The place was busy. One end of the common room was crowded with people trying
to get closer to one table, yelling and waving their arms. Curious, she walked over
to the crowd and pushed her way to the front to see what was going on.
Two men sat across from each other. The younger had blond hair and brown eyes
and an air of great confidence which went well with the several stacks of coins in
front of him. The older man was darker and better dressed, and he looked worried.
The piles of coins in front of him were smaller. A lot smaller. Both men held
cards, and there was a heap of coins in the middle of the table between them.
Killjoy pushed her way back out of the crowd and turned to the bar. "What's
that about?" she asked.
The bartender shrugged and seemed to be suppressing a smile. "Ahh, that's the
Silver Bullet. He owns this place. He's teaching that city official a thing or two
about losing." She thought there might be a hint of concern in his face and knew
that it could be tricky to cross a high official. "Want a drink?"
Killjoy was about to turn him down when the crowd burst into cheers and
laughter. She had no choice but to look over, just in time to see Bullet stand up
and extend his hand to his opponent. The older man shook it but seemed reluctant.
"Screwdriver!" Bullet called, "a round on the house!" he looked back at his
opponent. "Stay and have a drink," he invited.
Killjoy smiled. "I'll have one, too," she said.

In the mountains east of Simtakka:

The three gladiators sat around a campfire. Eventually they would enter the
heartland of Lirith Kai and find way stations all along the road, but here in the
mountains they were on their own. Man-O-War told stories of his northern homeland of
Kekoral and of his love for Sitha Nisanli. Chiana listened closely, but Longshot's
mind was elsewhere.
"I am so bored!" Longshot jumped up, interrupting Man-O-War. "I'm going for a
walk." He pulled a sword out of the weapons bundled into the wagon and moved into
the darkness.
"Don't wander too far, Toben," Man-O-War warned the young warrior. But he could
tell that Longshot wasn't listening. "I just don't know what to think of that guy,"
he muttered.
Chiana twitched a shoulder uncertainly and stared into the fire.

The young fighter walked into the night, swinging his sword at bushes and the
open air, not really going anywhere in particular. Just...away. His thoughts were
in turmoil so that he almost missed...laughter. Very faint. Not from the two people
behind him. Man-O-War laugh? Not likely! Curious, he followed the sound deeper
into the darkness.
He found the large rocks by walking into them, then peered past them into a
small valley. Firelight flickered. Five men and a woman, and a campfire. Two of
the men stood by the fire watching the other three, who had the woman backed up
against a wall of rock and were harassing her. Her hands were bound behind her.
Longshot's grip tightened on the hilt of his sword. He stepped past the rock.

Behind him, by the wagon, Chiana said, "Longshot is like this fire." She didn't
look up to see what Man-O-War's reaction might be.

     "Let her go!" Longshot commanded.
     All five men spun around.
"Bring him to me," one of the men by the fire said to his companions.
"Put down that pig-sticker," one brigand said as they approached.
     "You're a fool," another said.

Chiana kicked loose one of the rocks that held the fire in place.
"Uncontrolled, it will spread, wild and destructive." Some of the grass caught fire.

The leading brigand smirked. "This will be too ea--"
Longshot's sword slashed through the air, silencing him. In a quick movement,
he reversed the blade and plunged it into the stomach of the second brigand, then
jerked it out and up barely in time to stop the attack of the final man. The force
of blade hitting blade almost knocked him from his feet. Their weapons clashed
together again and again, throwing sparks into the night.

"If you don't stop the fire right away," Chiana went on, "it will continue to
grow and engulf everything it touches." She and Man-O-War watched as the flames
spread.

"KILL HIM!" the leader shouted, pushing the last of his men toward the fight.
Longshot ducked under a wild swipe, then put the strength of his shoulders and
back into a low swing that connected with the man's shin, shattering the bone. The
man went down, screaming, and Longshot's sword penetrated his chest.
The young gladiator looked up to see one last brigand approaching hesitantly.
     Longshot smiled.

"Nothing will stop it," Chiana said. "It is horrible."

Longshot walked down the slope toward the bandit leader, leaving the body of the
last brigand dead on the ground behind him. "I said for you to let her go." Blood
coated the sword he held at the read and was splattered across his body. None of it
was his.
With fear in his eyes, the leader of the group backed away slowly. "You can
have her!" he said. Then he spun and dashed off into the night.

Chiana replaced the rocks and put out the small grassfire. "But if you can get
to it in time, you can harness the fire. And then what a wonderful gift it becomes."

"Give me your hands," Longshot said. The woman turned around, and he cut the
ropes holding her and let them fall to the ground.
She went to her knees, hugging his legs. "Thank you, sir, thank you...." She
repeated it several times.
Longshot looked down at her and ran his hand over her hair and along the side of
her face. He smiled.

"We just need to find a way to calm the fire until it's useful and not
destructive," Chiana finished.
"How do we do that?" Man-O-War asked. He didn't really expect an answer.
Before she could say anything more, if she had been going to, Longshot came
walking out of the night. He was carrying a battered woman in his arms. "Guys, I...
we need some water. Please," he added.

To be continued....

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Dark Wing, this is an honor I had not expected. Duel2Dude, and on a win!
Thank you.

                                      SPY REPORT

Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport.
I doubt DAL SHANG will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the
difference, as STEEL SYNDICATE is pushed out of top team by GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS, who
came from 2nd with a 2-2-1 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for
there are sorrows to drown for REFUGEES, whose 1-3-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into
7th. KILLER TUNES stable has parlayed this turn's 2-2-0 into a 3 space move up the
rankings. This brings them up to 5th place. Good work, guys! The SAND DANCERS
guild has had a 5-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, LONER fought MAN-O-WAR and gained
18 points and contributed to MIGHTY DUCKS' 2-3-0. MAN-O-WAR has lost to LONER,
falling 19 points, while helping make TIL DEATH DO US PART a 2-2-0 turn. And all
eyes were on DEADWOOD this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. DAL
SHANG has a new victor! Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable
sources that The Blazing Unicorn uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS
stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on DAL SHANG, what are you afraid
of? And avoiding GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS more than any other team we find GOT IT FOR
CHRISTMAS. DAL SHANG, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The
most challenged warrior this turn was SAND DANCERS' warrior JAEGO SARL. More
fighters challenged him than challenged the Duelmaster!
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? You gotta do what you gotta do. GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS has sent
VIRGINIA, NO SANTA to the Dark Arena. The deed is done. Lift the ale, and toast the
memory. This is not good to see. Why pray tell has VIRGINIA, NO SANTA been sent to
the Dark Arena by GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS? And why with a 18-2-0 record?? The grave
that GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS had dug for 5 GOLDEN WARRIORS may yet be filled with the
body of QUEEN OF STEEL. Seldom are the likes of this to be seen. 5 GOLDEN WARRIORS
lives still! We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their
enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your
swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until the sun next rises and my pen sets to
paper-- Alarond the Scribe

Ko Lao-Den -- Well fought. Not since our second fight have you come out faster than
me. I applaud your efforts. You even hit me this time, but I managed to turn it
around again. I guess being lucky is better than being good. Good luck to you for
the rest of your career. I'm off to Darkholm and Assur predicts many, many losses in
my future. -- Virginia

Lucian -- Tough breaks for you. I hope you understand if Made It Home starts to
avoid your fine warriors. Somehow I think if you came prepared, the results would be
far, far different. I'm a true Delarquan manager, willing to use all the tools at my
disposal to win. However, I do not condone killing warriors, especially once they
reach mid-adepts status. -- Assurnasirbanipal

So how does one of the premier basher managers get the basher blues? Graduate a
basher or two and see what the commission recognizes as their favorites, that's how!
-- Assur

All -- Dark Wing is as follows: Basher, 7(9)-10(11)-13-17-21-12-4(5) skills are:
att 23, par ?(1-2), init 19, def 17, dec 27, rip ?(3-6). Physicals: born great
damage, normal endurance; now good endurance. Hosed by 1 in attack and init,
somewhere between mode and hosed by 3 in rip, blessed by 2 in def, blessed by 1 or 2
in par, (mode dec, of course). He was an experiment to try and abuse the ADM rule
about favorites suitability. Didn't get as lucky as I had hoped. Fav's were mod-
very low-bash, morning star, defense. Still could be fun just because of the
excessive decisiveness base. I may play him some in ADM. -- Woody

Dakoril -- Congrats. -- Dark Wing

Sigban, Skordahl -- M-1 and M2 Mallard aren't really that good. I just seem to have
stumbled onto their favorites (well, M2 does seem a little blessed). -- Woody

Hemorrhage -- Ugly Duckling is that good (and I found his favorites). -- Woody

Virginia, No Santa -- Well, YOU are not santa, that's for sure. TWO skills from a
long-time Duel2Dude? Surely you could have done better. -- Ko Lao-Den

5 Golden Warriors -- Bright and blinding, the lot of you. -- Tebas ten Kogan

L.A. Woman -- Well, go back there, then! See if I care. -- Jeri Tavan

Are the standbys supposed to be that fierce? -- Kassal ten Dru

Crackerman -- And now I've got crumbs everywhere! -- Jaego Sarl

Standbys. (sigh) -- Gobarl

M2 Mallard -- Is that allowed? Kinda scary. -- Skordahl
P.S. And you aren't even a true Duck.

M-1 Mallard -- Dammit, don't DO that. -- Sigban

All -- I've seen what's on the forum. So I'm prey, am I, Max. You and all your
devious buddies will become my prey, even those I thought okay. I don't have to
explain anything I do, much like yourselves so bring it on. Feel free to come over
to 31 for a thrashing. Oh, by the way, I am also in a new alliance. They tend to
share my sentiments about the VC. If they follow me or not, we will see; I'm not at
liberty to talk for them. The VC may be on their last stand!!!! -- Blackstorm

6 May 2006
The 2006 Mordanti Alliance Olympics are off to a grand start! With seventeen teams
declared, running under eight different flags (not to mention six additional non-
Olympic teams present), it is looking to be as tough as any previous Olympiad, if not
more! Olympians petitioned the Commission to make an allowance for late entries, and
the Commission agreed, and will allow new entrants to partake, as long as they are
active by Round 3 (T546, due May 29th). So if you wish to enter, please email your
intentions to amicitia@gwi.net with team name, manager name, and affiliation
(alliance name or independent), or show up in Mordant (DM-1) on, or before, May 29th
and place your declarations in the newsletter!
