Her manager, Killjoy, was supposed to meet her here at the new guildhouse, but the older woman was long overdue. She glanced up at the sky, but couldn't see enough of it to tell the time; there had been bells from somewhere nearby, but Synthia hadn't been paying attention to them. "It's got to be after midnight," she said out loud. The words echoed a little in the empty room. She turned toward the door but stopped. She'd have no idea where to go looking for Killjoy. "Could she be lost or hurt? This city is so much bigger than Simtakka.... I hope she is okay." Dal Shang, The Drunk Dragon: "So...you're a man...hic manager of a team?" The words came out slurred, but Killjoy couldn't do anything about that. "Not anymore. I just own this place now." Bullet was obviously drunk, too, but he seemed to be holding himself together better. Killjoy's eyes were narrow slits when the young woman walked up and placed two more drinks on the table. Killjoy stared at one of them for a second, then slowly picked it up. "Now, there are a few of them still around," Bullet said, "like Screwdriver behind the bar, you met him. And there is Cooler here, she just dropped off our drinks." "Hi, sweety," Cooler said to Joy. A small smile crossed her face. "There are two others, but they aren't here." "You should...re...open." Joy finished her glass. "Ha ha. Well, I don't think so." He leaned back in his chair. "Why not?" Bullet frowned. He didn't like the turn the conversation was taking. "I like doing this." "Ha! You're afraid to lose." "WHAT!?!" "You win all the time, but you only do what you're good at," she said, staring him straight in the eyes. "You're afraid to try something different and lose." "That's not true!" Bullet was on the defensive, and he hated that. "Well, if it's not true...restart your team." For the first time that night, Bullet was speechless. "Well?" Bullet looked away and noticed the time, seizing the change of topic quickly. "It's getting late. Do you need help getting home?" "No, I can make it." Killjoy stood. The room started to spin. She sat back down, carefully, because she wasn't sure where the chair was. "Screwdriver, help her home," Bullet said. Turning back to Joy, he asked, "Will you be able to give him directions?" "Yes." "Okay." Bullet nodded. "Get her home safely, Screwdriver. Me and Cooler will close the place down." Between Simtakka and Dal Shang: "Who are you?" Man-O-War handed the woman her third cup of water. "My name is Triss." She drained the cup and held it out again. "Why did they have you hostage?" Man-O-War refilled her cup. "I worked for a merchant, and we were traveling to several villages with fruits when they attacked us. I'm not sure why. We didn't have anything worth stealing." She looked away, blinking back tears. "They killed Jerall and the horses, then burned everything else. But they spared me." She took a shaky breath. "The leader of the group seemed very confused and upset. He kept saying 'where are they?' and 'they were supposed to meet us here'. And then Toben came and saved me." She looked over at Long Shot. "Thank you again, m'lord." He just nodded at her. Man-O-War stared into the night for a moment, then stood. "Well, let's not hang around here anymore. Whoever they were going to meet might show up looking for them. We shouldn't be here for them to find." The others began moving around repacking their gear. "Triss, we are going to Dal Shang. You can come with us, or we can leave you in some town along the way." "Thank you, m'lord. I am from Dal Shang; I'll go there with you." Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse: Synthia was pacing back and forth, very concerned for her good friend, when the front door opened. A strange man shouldered through it carrying Joy. "What happened?" Synthia rushed over to Joy, very worried...until she smelled the alcohol on her friend's breath. "Oh. I'll take it from here." "She just had a bit too much to drink," Screwdriver said. "I can see that." The look she directed at him was unfriendly, and he felt like protesting that nobody had forced the drinks on her. But it didn't look like this young woman wanted to hear that tonight. "Thank you for getting her home." "Well...um...have a good night, then." He backed toward the door as he said it. Her "Good-bye" was cold enough to freeze a man's ears off, and he escaped gratefully. When the door clicked shut, Synthia carried Joy over to a pile of blankets that she'd made up as a bed. She hoped her manager ended up with a stiff neck from the hard floor as well as a major hangover for worrying her like this and then coming home drunk. Well, at least she was safe, not mugged in some alley or something. Synthia sat down in a corner, pulled her knees up to her chest, crossed her arms on them, and rested her head on her arms. "At least she isn't dead in a ditch somewhere...." In the middle of nowhere: The sun had just barely popped up from the horizon. A group of six men on horseback rode up to a campsite and looked around. The fire was burned out, the site deserted. "What happened here?" the man on the first horse asked. The others dismounted and investigated the area. "Three men died up here," one man reported. "Only one of them had his sword drawn." "Another one here," a man called from halfway between the bodies and the blackened stones of the fire. "Were these the men we were supposed to meet?" the leader asked. He dismounted also. "I believe so." "Here by the wall," one said. "This rope. It's been cut." The leader nodded. Of course it had. "How many in the group that attacked them?" "Looks like only one man." The leader hissed. "One man killed all these men?" He looked around. "There were supposed to be five men meeting us. Where is the last one?" "There are two groups of tracks. One man went that way, two this way." "Okay. Jerik, Tirol, you two follow the tracks after our contact. The rest of us will follow these tracks after the girl." "When we find the contact?" "Kill him." Dal Shang: Silver Bullet walked over to his bed. There was a blonde woman curled up, facing away from him. He crawled in and embraced the sleeping woman. "Good morning, Brandi," he said softly into her ear. "Bullet, it's early, not now," she said sleepily. He rolled over onto his back and she cuddled closer. "I'm going to restart the team," he said. "What?" She still seemed more asleep than awake. "Yup, we are going to get it up and going and again." "What's gotten into you?" She yawned and blinked at him. "I met a woman last night." Her eyes came into focus. "Oh? Should I be worried?" He laughed. "No, you're my girl." He kissed the top of her head. "She's a manager from Simtakka. They closed the arena there, you know, so she moved her team here. She kinda motivated me, challenged me, actually." "So, just like that?" She sat up, excited. "Just like that," he confirmed. "I'll go to the Commission today and get it started." "Bullet?" "Yes, dear?" "It isn't so early anymore." "Oh, yeah?" SPY REPORT Good day, friends and fiends, welcome to your friendly neighborhood spyreport. I doubt DAL SHANG will ever be the same. It seems the training can make the difference, as GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS is pushed out of top team by SAND DANCERS, who came from 4th with a 4-1-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for STEEL SYNDICATE, whose 0-4-0 this turn dropped them by 5 into 7th. SAND DANCERS stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 3 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 1st place. Good work, guys! The POSSE guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, REVEREND BLOOD fought MAGNOLIA and gained 19 points and contributed to POSSE's 4-1-0. L.A. WOMAN has lost to TEBAS TEN KOGAN, falling 20 points, while helping make KILLER TUNES a 1-3-1 turn. This turn DEADWOOD challenged KO LAO-DEN in what was DAL SHANG's Title bout. Defending his title for another turn, DEADWOOD kept SAND DANCERS' warrior, KO LAO-DEN, from claiming the throne. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Blazing Unicorn uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.' Inscrutable, but true. KILLER TUNES has cause to stand tall, as they were DAL SHANG's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And guess who avoided KILLER TUNES stable the most? Believe it or not, it was GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS. Anyone surprised? Well, sports fans, take notice that CRACKERMAN from KILLER TUNES was DAL SHANG's most challenged warrior this turn. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. SKORDAHL has departed DAL SHANG, leaving REFUGEES without their 3-5-0 warrior. Question, just what was his team doing at the taverns last night? Is it really true that DAL SHANG has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask... Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the sweetest. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy.
