Somewhere in the mountains:

"I don't know who he was!" The man lay on his back on the ground, sweating and
scrabbling with his feet to push himself farther away from his pursuers. His
captors. He had thought the little mountain town would provide him with a chance to
escape. He had been wrong. Very wrong, when he turned down a narrow street, barely
a slit between buildings, hoping for concealment and a back way out into the country
again. This alley was a dead end.
Jerik and Tirol glanced at each other and sighed with heavy patience.
"Then you are useless to us." Jerik spat.
     Tirol reached for his sword.
"Wait! Wait...." His mind raced to come up with a reason for them to keep him
alive.
     "Speak," Jerik said.
"Gladiator...he had to be a gladiator," he said. He closed his eyes in
expectation of an immediate death blow, but nothing happened.
     "Go on."
He opened his eyes. Jerik seemed interested. But what else was there to say?
"Uh...he...he umm."
Jerik spat again. "Kill him," he said to Tirol.
"NO...I can show you--" He scrambled through his thoughts for something he
could show them.
Jerik and Tirol exchanged a glance and then turned silently and started walking
toward their horses.
The man on the ground had a brief spurt of anger. Arrogant bastards. He hadn't
liked the two of them when he hired on for the ambush, and he'd been right. They'd
treat a horse with more respect than they did him. But at least his trick had
worked. By the time they wondered where he was leading them, what he was going to
show them, he'd have had a chance to escape. He pushed himself up and began to brush
off his clothes.
And glanced up just in time to see the arrow headed for his chest. The force of
the blow knocked him back to the ground. The last thing he saw as the two men riding
out of the alley.
"Dal Shang is closer than Daiyla Kiv now," Jerik said to his partner. "We'll go
there first."

At a way station along the main road:

"Any way we can help you, sir?" one of the hostlers asked, tipping another
bucket of water into the trough.
"You've done enough," Maadi said. "May your god protect you." He turned to
walk back to the leader of his group. He and the other three men were following
wagon tracks--or word of the wagon's passage, since the road was mostly paved. A
specific wagon thought to be carrying an important package: a young woman named
Triss.
Maadi gathered his reins and looked up at his leader. "You were right,
Eidolon," he said. "They're heading for Dal Shang."
"How are we sure it's the right wagon?"
"It was the only one coming from the right direction at the right time. One of
the men with it--the youngest one--was boasting about being a gladiator!" The last
was said with a chuckle.
"That would explain the campsite," Rix said. He was younger than Maadi but more
serious.
"Did you get any names?" Eidolon asked.
"The driver of the wagon was named Aranthor."
"Aranthor..." Eidolon repeated the name to himself. "That sounds familiar to
me." He stroked his beard.
"Perhaps in the arena," Rix said.
"There is no Aranthor in Dal Shang," Eidolon muttered. "I'd know."
"Not yet, anyway," said Circu, the muscular one.
"Daiyla Kiv is that way," Rix said. "Perhaps they're moving the team to--"
Eidolon cut him off. "Man-O-War," he said loudly. "That's his arena name. He
is a part of Til Death Do Us Part."
     The others exchanged glances.
     "Dal Shang, then."
They turned their horses eastward out of the way station's courtyard and urged
them to a run.

Approaching Dal Shang:

The road had been running along the top of the cliff, with the waters of the
Trier flashing in the sun below. According to the map, that meant they were getting
near Dal Shang. It should be possible to see it now. Man-O-War squinted into the
distance. There was something ahead that wasn't the road, was bigger than another
farmstead, was...bluer and brighter than one of the small forests that came down to
the shore, although it looked a little like both. There were occasional glitters.
Well, Dal Shang was called the Crystal City by the poets, so maybe it did glitter, if
you squinted just so. It was built where the Bell River notched the cliff and fell
to the level of the Trier, so maybe there were a lot of trees, too. Why not?
"I think I can see the arena," Man-O-War announced after a moment.
Chiana was sitting up front with him, and Longshot and their new companion,
Triss, rode in the back.
"That's a big city," he added.
"Around twenty-five thousand inside the walls," Chiana said. "That's what it
says in the guidebook."
Longshot listened to the two up front for a while, then let their voices fade as
he turned his attention to Triss. There were so many questions he wanted to ask her,
and he didn't know how to ask any of them. She didn't talk about herself, either.
Hadn't said a word beyond "pass the water bottle" and "yes" and "no" since they'd
found her. Since he'd rescued her. That didn't count as conversation. It wasn't
friendly. He wanted her to be a friend.
"Wake up, we're almost there," Man-O-War yelled into the back. To Chiana he
added, "Toben must be asleep, I haven't heard him all day." It had been peaceful
without the young gladiator talking, too, though he didn't say so.
"Will Valaron be there already?" Chiana asked.
"He should be. He moved his wife and son there a few days before we left
Simtakka."
"I can't wait to see Victor again. He is such a cute little boy."
Man-O-War flicked the reins and smiled. He couldn't wait to see Sitha again.

Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse:

"Okay! I'm sorry! I didn't mean to be gone that long," Killjoy snapped. She
squinted her eyes and pressed her hands to her forehead, trying to hold back the
pounding. Synthia's constant nagging wasn't helping. The younger woman had been at
it for hours. If Joy had been feeling better, she would have put her foot down and
silenced the Lord Protector. As it was--
Someone knocked. It sounded to Killjoy like someone using a sledgehammer.
"I'll get that," Synthia snarled. She stomped out of the room.
Killjoy was relieved to get that small reprieve from Synthia.

When Synthia opened the door, she was greeted with a familiar face. "Hi,
Valaron! I see you made it safely."
"Oh, yes. And the new place looks good." Valaron stepped into the house. "Is
Killjoy here?"
"Yes, but she's feeling...unwell at the moment." Synthia decided to leave it at
that.
"Too bad. I'll leave her alone, then. Do you think you can show me my work
station?"
"Sure thing. It's out in the back." Valaron followed her through the house and
to the back yard. Synthia pointed to a smaller building next to the stable. "There
it is. Have fun."
He walked into what would soon be his blacksmith shop. Mentally he placed a
forge here, an anvil there, a water barrel against that wall. Next to the shop was
the stable. It was home to only two horses at the moment, but soon it would be full.
Part of the agreement with Killjoy was that in return for letting him, his wife, and
his son move into the guildhouse, he would take care of the stable and the horses.
And he would be in charge of repairing armor and weapons. Plus any work he could get
on the side.
He couldn't wait to get started.

Man-O-War called their horses to a halt in front of the guildhouse. He was
relieved to have come to the end of traveling, and he knew that everyone else was,
too. You forgot how big Lirith Kai was until you had to cross it.
"Triss, are you sure you don't want to stay here for the night?" Man-O-War
asked.
"No, sir, I have family here. They will be glad to know I'm safe." She glanced
over her shoulder toward the city wall.
"Well, okay. Do you need any...anything?" He tried one last time to offer her
help.
"You have done more than enough for me, m'lord!" She turned to Longshot, who
was just standing there looking at her. "Thank you again, Toben. I am forever in
your debt." Then she turned and walked away.
"Cheer up, Toben." Man-O-War thumped him on the back. "You'll see her again,"
he said, chuckling.
     "Aaaah, shut up."

Triss walked for a while, making the turns without thinking about them.
Presently she came to an inn and restaurant and went in. The restaurant part was
large and most of the tables were full. All types of people, mostly just average, a
few upper class, a few shady types. Triss paid no attention to any of them, but two
of them noticed her.
"Hi, Azor, can I get a room and some dinner? I'll pay you tomorrow--you know
I'm good for it."
"Sure you can, Triss. Would you like your special room?" the hefty innkeeper
asked.
"Yes, please. She took the key from Azor. "Can you send the food up to the
room?"
"You know I can. Go get you some rest, child."
     "Thanks." She smiled.

One of the men who had watched her come got up and strolled across the lobby as
she made her way down the hallway. He took special note of what room she went into,
but (he hoped) without drawing attention to himself. When she closed the door, he
made his way back to the table and his companion.
"Was it the girl?" Jerik asked.
     Tirol nodded.
"She ordered food. We will go then."

                             Notes from the arena champ.

That win is dedicated to our last warrior Johnny Sin. And my Bloodlust will
continue always against you Ko. I'm sure we will fight again and again. Rest
assured every time we do, I will be trying to kill you.
Gobarl gets my challenge this turn. Time to unleash some pain in these prissy
boy Dal Shang Bashers.
     Bring the noise.

                                                       Deadwood
                                                       Champion of The Shang

                                      SPY REPORT

Hail DAL SHANG! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. KILLER TUNES stable has parlayed this turn's 4-0-1 into a 3 space move
up the rankings. This brings them up to 3rd place. Good work, guys! The POSSE
guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know
where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, L.A. WOMAN fought BACARDI and
gained 37 points and contributed to KILLER TUNES' 4-0-1. JERI TAVAN has lost to LONG
SHOT, falling 17 points, while helping make SAND DANCERS a 1-3-0 turn. This turn
DEADWOOD challenged GOBARL in what was DAL SHANG's Title bout. The attempts to
dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and DEADWOOD remains DAL SHANG's top warrior for
another turn. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw last night, cramped
under the table at The Blazing Unicorn?
He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose
for good reasons. My mama told me that one. I also notice that the MIGHTY DUCKS
stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on DAL SHANG, what are you afraid
of? And avoiding MIGHTY DUCKS more than any other team we find GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS.
DAL SHANG, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans,
take notice that GOBARL from REFUGEES was DAL SHANG's most challenged warrior this
turn. Building dreams on hope, GIFT CERTIFICATE challenged up 30 points this turn to
take on DAKORIL from REFUGEES stable. And now nobody knows where DAKORIL is right
now, after giving GIFT CERTIFICATE 26 points worth of recognition. As quiet chuckles
rise behind me. Tsk, tsk, tsk. ANNABEL BLACKHEART, does your manager know you're
challenging down 22 points to fight SIGBAN from REFUGEES? I thought challenges were
for warriors, not cowards looking for easy wins. ANNABEL BLACKHEART won victory over
SIGBAN, is nothing sacred? MADE IT HOME of GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS had better have a
good reason for challenging down 11 points in a challenge which he won. I thought
MADE IT HOME showed great skill and promise when he beat REVEREND BLOOD. All right,
so I slept through it! Big deal!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. I guess it was coming sooner or
later, STUMBLIN' DRUNK has lost BACARDI, and DAL SHANG is bound to miss her. For a
little while, at least. This is the stuff legends are made of. L.A. WOMAN has
killed BACARDI, a 18-17-3 warrior of STUMBLIN' DRUNK. I hear KILLER TUNES welcomes a
bloodfeud challenge. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he has nothing to
cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
I like this place, DAL SHANG, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in DAL SHANG and
I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in DAL SHANG
again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

All -- Please forgive my absence for a few turns, as I will be relocating across the
country. I will return soon enough. -- Lucian, Mgr. Steel Syndicate

All -- Hello everyone. My name is Killjoy, manager of Til Death Do Us Part. Thank
you for letting us play in your fine arena since Simtakka arena closed. I'm looking
forward to getting to know you all. -- Killjoy

Loner -- Seems I need to brush off a little rust. Well fought. -- Man-o-War

SkorDah 2 -- Did I see that right? You are a Duck? I have never seen a Duck as tall
as you. -- Valerion

Teba Ten Kogan -- Humph. You got lucky. -- Long Shot

And? -- Killjoy

Oh. Congrats on the Invite. -- Long Shot

Salazar -- Ambitious, but well fought. The Mighty Ducks always applaud ambition. --
M2 Mallard

Gobarl -- I object to the description "viciously subdued". It was much closer than
that. -- Ugly Duckling

Gobarl -- Never mind Ugly Duckling. He has little man syndrome. -- M-1 Mallard

Annabel Blackheart -- Woody is an idiot. Hopefully he will make up his mind about
how I should fight before some fine warrior like you sends me to Arhingol's realm. --
Loner

Annabel -- Never mind Loner. He's just a wimp. -- M-1 Mallard

Young Gun -- I have no idea why our fight was unpopular. Doesn't anyone appreciate a
tactical chess match anymore? -- Friar Duck

Friar Duck -- The people have spoken. You're boring. Twerp. -- M-1 Mallard

Romulus -- Sorry pumpkin, I couldn't help myself. -- Six Killer

Loner -- Could have sworn I challenged someone this turn, but I don't think it was
you. Regardless, it was going to be a beating either way. Need some ice? -- Annabel

Magnolia -- I guess the man upstairs wasn't with you that fight. Next time I'll give
you a one way ticket to him so you can ask him why. -- Rev. Blood

Otis -- A bit confused I am...you came back to graduate a warrior who is 14-15, when
you have a natural born killer column. Don't cage that death machine; feed him
blood. -- Rosebud

Dakoril -- Your FE does worry me. Your style, however, does not. I guess if I got
unlucky you could squeeze a win out. I'll take being the Duel 2 Dude. Nice ring to
it. -- Deadwood

Deadwood -- Great fight, not even close! No, that isn't sarcasm, you think I
*wanted* to be the Duel2Dude? As if! Good work, you like fine sitting up there on
the target. -- Ko Lao-Den

Crackerman -- Ritz, with sharp cheddar and slices of pepperoni, yes! -- Jaego Sarl

L.A. Woman -- Now, now, there's no need to get excited. True, I'm leaving, and there
won't be anyone as couth as me left, but I'm sure something will turn up to keep you
company. -- Tebas ten Kogan

Standbys. (sigh) -- Jeri Tavan

Hey, a win is a win. I'll take a standby. -- Kassal ten Dru

Ivan -- I gave you plenty of chances, dammit. Think I wanted to move into winning-
record-hood? But you golems are all the same, just can't take a hint. -- Sigban

Another Brick Pt2 -- (fading scream) Duck-eater! -- Ghost of Skordahl

Nothing wrong with fighting a standby that I can see. -- Dakoril

Ugly Duckling -- Yeah, but you'll turn into a goose one of these days, say along
about...Harvest Festival? -- Gobarl

Crackerman -- Don't need a shop vac, I've got a large dog. Does the same job and
wags his tail besides. -- Jaego Sarl

The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire want to announce the joining of a new
member who cherishes the same ideals, respect and loyalty that we hold dear.
From this day forward let all know that Blackstorm is now a Dark Knight of the
Desolate Empire Alliance. With him as our chosen brother, our alliance only becomes
stronger. Let all his foes become ours, and ours his. May all our enemies' blood
flow freely and give NO quarter in war.
This is also a warning to any cowards, bullies, etc.... If you play with fire,
you WILL get burnt!!!

To those involved, no, I have not abandoned your stories. But I've been letting them
drift, and that has to stop, so I am taking the time to make sure that I know where
they are going, more than just "what happens next" dreamed up on the fly, before
resuming work on them. No new stories will be started until at least one of the old
ones has concluded, for the same reason: quantity can't substitute for quality.
Your patience in this matter is appreciated. -- the Scribe
