Dal Shang:
Clang. Clank. Clang. The sounds of metal being hammered grew louder as
Octavia approached the blacksmith shop. It was located behind the guildhouse of Til
Death Do Us Part, approached by an alley along the side of the main building.
Octavia pulled the heavy door open and stepped inside just in time to see the
smith plunge the orange-glowing metal into a barrel of water. It hissed like a
hundred snakes as steam burst upward, then faded out. Then Valarion pulled another
hunk of metal from the forge and began hammering on it.
"Excuse me," Octavia said. Her voice was drowned out by the hammering. She bit
her lip in frustration, then shrugged and decided to wait for a quiet moment before
she spoke again. When the beating stopped, she yelled, "EXCUSE ME!" Her ears were
still ringing, but this time the smith heard her and looked up.
"Oh! Hello, I didn't see you there," he said.
"Yes...." She shook her head, trying to make the ringing in her ears stop. "I
need to find Killjoy. Do you know where I can find her?"
"She would be in the house," he said. "You can go through there." He pointed
to another door in the far side of the smithy.
Octavia nodded thanks and went through it, walked across the back yard of the
guildhouse, and up to the back porch. Just as she raised her hand to knock on the
door, it was flung open and Synthia and Kraj walked out. She jumped a little and
pulled her hand back.
Synthia raised her eyebrows and took half a step back, also surprised. "Hello.
Can I help you?"
"I am...."
"Octavia," a voice from inside the house called her name.
"It seems you were expected." Synthia held open the door to let her pass.
"Good luck," she said, smiling.
Octavia stepped inside warily and met Killjoy face to face for the first time.
"So, you want to be a gladiator," Killjoy said.
Octavia just smiled at her.
"Well, then. Let's talk." Killjoy led the way into her office.
The Isle of the Eye:
The newly enrolled Lord Protector Tropical Cooler peered up the small hill to
the house at the top. "I hope this is the right place," she muttered, checking the
written directions one last time. The wind was blowing a lot colder here than it had
in Dal Shang, and she shivered. As she trudged up the hill to the house, the wind
picked up.
The house was small and in bad condition. The owner had clearly been attempting
to repair it, but there was still plenty of work to be done. As she crossed the
porch, she noticed a door that was not on the side of the house but set into the
floor of the porch itself. That was a strange thing, and she didn't really like
strange things. She walked carefully around it to knock on the normal door.
"Hello?" The man who opened the door had red hair and youthful feathers.
"I hope I'm in the right place. Are you Wild Weasel?"
"Yes, that's me."
"I have a message for you from Killjoy," she said, handing over the package.
Wild Weasel could see that Killjoy's seal was intact, so he opened it and pulled
out the letter, then paused when he saw that Tropical Cooler was shivering. "Come
inside," he said. "It was colder for me, as well, when I first got here." He closed
the door behind them and motioned for her to sit down. "Tapestry! Will you make
some hot tea, please?"
"Yes, dear." The woman's voice came from the next room.
"So, you're from Simtakka?" Weasel asked.
"Dal Shang, actually. Killjoy is there now, too."
A tall woman with long white hair walked in with tea for everyone.
"Thank you, hun," Weasel said, "This is...? I'm sorry, I didn't ask your
name."
"Tropical Cooler. Lord Protector now," she added proudly.
Wild Weasel nodded and settled back in his chair as the two women talked and got
to know each other.
Wild Weasel
I hope you are enjoying your retirement. How are Tapestry and your son,
Gadryal, doing?
There is a matter I need to discuss with you, but not like this. I know it
is asking a lot of you, but will you come to Dal Shang? I wouldn't ask this of
you if it wasn't a very serious matter. It has something to do with the secret
you found under your house a few years ago. I hope that is enough to entice you
to come here.
Be well, and I will see you soon.
Joy
Dal Shang:
"Well, Octavia, I think we can accept you. We will get everything finalized
tomorrow. Congratulations."
"Thank you," Octavia said with a half-smile. She had hoped that she would be
rejected.
Killjoy opened her office door for Octavia to leave just as Triss walked by.
She and Triss made eye contact, and a feeling of dread washed over Octavia. *Have I
met her? Has she seen me?* But those thoughts faded as Triss just kept walking and
disappeared down the hall.
"Let's tell everyone the good news," Killjoy said.
The Isle of the Eye:
Wild Weasel sat for a minute watching the two women talk. They seemed to be
getting along just great. They won't miss me, he thought, then got up and walked
outside. He pulled open the door on the floor of the porch and went down into the
home under his house.
He lit one torch, then used it to light others. The glow from the flames
flickered and danced on the walls. There was a short hall and then a large chamber.
In the center was the skeleton of a dragon long dead. This was Wild' Weasel's
favorite place to be. He rubbed his hands along the smooth bones. What a
magnificent creature it must have been! Directly behind it was a door that led to
another, much smaller, chamber.
In the center of the smaller room was a pedestal, and resting on it was a sword.
He picked up the blade and held it for a moment, admiring the play of torchlight on
the prefection of the metal.
"What are your secrets?" he asked the sword, knowing no answer would come. His
hand closed around the grip that fit him so perfectly. He swung the sword through
the air until the familiar soft red glow developed. "Let us find out together,
Angelfire."
To be continued....
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
I don't think I've been this this happy in a long time. Looks like my win last turn
got me the political points I needed to get out of here. That gives Otis all ten
styles at the Isle finally. Someone asked a few turns back why he would run a team
just to get me my invite, now you know why. Not sure if he is going to continue
running Killer Tunes or move on to some of younger teams. Only time will tell.

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in DAL SHANG this turn, and let's
start with a look at some of the teams. KILLER TUNES stable has parlayed this turn's
4-1-0 into a 6 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 3rd place. Good
work, guys! And let's see, ANOTHER BRICK PT2 fought LISSANE TYL DRU and gained 20
points and contributed to KILLER TUNES' 4-1-0. LISSANE TYL DRU has lost to ANOTHER
BRICK PT2, falling 18 points, while helping make SAND DANCERS a 2-2-0 turn.
Defending hers title for another turn, L.A. WOMAN kept DAL SHANG's warrior, SWEET
ANELLA, from claiming the throne. By the way, was that our Duelmaster that I saw
last night, cramped under the table at The Blazing Unicorn?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. KILLER TUNES has cause to stand tall, as
they were DAL SHANG's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And avoiding KILLER TUNES more than any other team we find COLOR CRAYONS. DAL
SHANG, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? The most challenged
warrior this turn was REFUGEES' warrior MODORAM. More fighters challenged him than
challenged the Duelmaster! In a fit of brilliance or of stupidity (hard to say
sometimes), UGLY DUCKING challenged ANNABEL BLACKHEART today, facing a 34 difference
in recognition. And crowds were on their feet when UGLY DUCKING claimed a victory
from ANNABEL BLACKHEART, and now has 97 points for his efforts. CRACKERMAN from
KILLER TUNES took a risk this turn by bravely challenging up 32 points in a challenge
against GOBARL. And though CRACKERMAN lost to GOBARL, the valiant attempt earned him
3 worth of recognition. Foolhardiness can sometimes pay. RED of COLOR CRAYONS had
better have a good reason for challenging down 8 points in a challenge which she
lost. I thought RED showed great skill and promise when she was subdued by MODORAM.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace.
Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. The Blazing Unicorn declares a free
round for LONER and all of MIGHTY DUCKS, for having revenged POSSE's REVEREND BLOOD
for killing one of their comrades. Is it really true that DAL SHANG has more
dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just thought I'd ask...
I like this place, DAL SHANG, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet
again, keep your swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in DAL
SHANG again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe
