Synthia Lapella, assistant manager of Til Death Do Us Part and Lord Protector, was one of them, and as she looked around, she knew why she had never heard of the Pig and Whistle. It was the kind of place that catered to unskilled workers and casual laborers; gladiators never came here. Across from her sat a man named Tarrol. Apparently he was a janitor at the arena, and he had met her after the day's fights, insisting that they "go somewhere quiet to talk." He was a very ordinary looking person, a little on the high side of middle age, a little on the skinny side of a normal build. Not threatening, and Synthia had no doubt of her ability to handle any trouble he might bring her way. "He was murdered, I tell you!" Tarrol said with conviction. Synthia suppressed a sigh. "I don't think so. People die in the arena. Often. It isn't called murder." She took a drink from her glass of surprisingly good beer. "I know they do," Tarrol said. "But you have to believe me." He looked around the bar. "I saw them," he added, almost in a whisper. Synthia frowned in confusion. "Saw what?" "The man that killed him!" "Tarrol. Long Shot was killed in the arena. Everyone saw that." She stood up to leave. Tarrol grabbed her arm. That's not true. He was poisoned." Their eyes locked on each other and neither spoke for a long moment. "Kassal ten Dru's sword did not kill Long Shot," Tarrol said. Synthia sat back down. "And you know who did?" "I don't know his name, but I know where to find him." "Show me." Til Death Do Us Part training yard: "Hold the blade firmly," Sitha Nisanli said to Triss, "but don't lock yourself up so tensely." She adjusted the younger woman's grip again, then gestured toward Man-O-War, who stood facing them, his sword at the ready. "Try it again, Triss." The newcomer, Octavia, stood at the edge of the yard watching. The building shadowed her, and the others seemed unaware of her presence. Octavia found the situation bizare. Who is this woman? How can she possibly be a sword-bearer? She can barely hold that practice sword. Triss was an insult to the whole concept of the dragon-swords. Triss attempted a novice swing with her sword, and Man-O-War easily parried it. Octavia frowned. Is she faking it? Why has it been so hard to-- Her thoughts were interrupted when Sitha lashed out at Man-O-War, taking him by surprise. She knocked him down and immediately jumped on top of him, then gave him a kiss on the forehead. That made Octavia smile. For a moment. "What are you thinking about?" Killjoy said from behind her. "Huh? Oh. Um... just watching them." Octavia scrambled for the right words and hoped that Killjoy wasn't going to press her with questions. "You should join them," the manager urged. "Well, I don't--" Joy pushed a sword into Octavia's hand. "Here. Show me what you've got." Down in Harbor Town: "I saw them go in here." Tarrol stared around at the warehouses. He'd gone pale, and he was sweating. "I wish you hadn't made me bring you here. I could have just told you which one...." "Don't worry, you're with me." Synthia pulled open the door to a warehouse and walked in. "We are going to get to the bottom of this once and for all." She walked forward softly, moving between stacked boxes and bales of who-knew- what. She could hear muffled voices from the other side of the building. And Tarrol breathing shallowly and too fast behind her. He's on the edge of panic, have to be careful or he'll run. She led the way along the aisles between crates until they were close enough to hear more clearly, make out most of the words. If she held her head just so and squinted, she could see between the stacked boxes to where two men were talking. Tarrol was silent behind her. "We don't need her," one of the men said. "She may prove useful, Rix," the other one replied. He was pacing back and forth, and there was something about him that Synthia didn't like. She couldn't place a finger on it, but whatever it was, she didn't like it at all. "AHHHH!!!" The blood-curdling scream came from Tarrol, and Synthia spun toward him, pulling her sword from its sheath. Tarrol was staggering, back arched, as another man shoved him off the blade of a sword. The stranger was tall and muscular, and his sword was bloody. Synthia judged that Tarrol was dead or dying. She threw up her sword to block, but the man came at her with all his weight behind the blow, and even parried, the force sent her crashing into and through the nearest stack of boxes. She hit the ground hard enough to lose her grip on her sword, and it slid across the floor. She barely rolled out of the way of the next attack and threw herself toward her own blade, stretching to reach it. Just as she grabbed the handle, Hobgoblin's foot stamped down on the blade, pinning her hand to the floor. She looked up in time to take a knee to the face which rolled her onto her back. The large man, her first opponent, attempted a final crushing blow, but Hobgoblin blocked it. "No, Cirou. She is a Lord Protector," he said, his voice mocking. "We can't kill this one." He dropped to his knees, straddling her, and lowered his face to within a few inches of hers. "You can't die," he said, "but you can feel pain, can't you?" "Circu!" Rix shouted. "Didn't you kill that other guy?" Hobgoblin straightened and glared at the large man, Circu. "Find him," he commaded. Then he turned his attention back to Synthia. "We are going to get to know each other real well, Lord Protector." Stumblin' Drunk The Drunken Dragon Tavern is located outside the city walls, near the arena. The owner, Silver Bullet, is also the manager of the team Stumblin' Drunk. The tavern serves as a guildhouse for the team, and a recreational place for the team members and anyone else that wants to stop in. Anything goes at the Drunken Dragon: gambling, drinking, and even escorts from the local pink-flower houses. Silver Bullet is always inviting people to "Come in, have a drink, and forget everything else. At least until you leave." Grey Goose was standing up. His arms whirled as he mimicked his last fight, telling his story to a group of young men and women. Screwdriver was behind the bar serving drinks to celebrate the graduation of the team's last original member, DUI. "Congrats, big guy," Silver Bullet said, patting the large man on the back. "What are you going to do now?" DUI stood silent for a moment, then spoke. "I'm done with fighting. I will retire, at least until the Greywand calls on me." "Well, enjoy yourself." Bullet gave him a quick punch on the arm. "HELP!" The front door swung open, and a man fell to the floor just inside, bleeding heavily. Everyone rushed over to see what was happening. "The Harbor... warehouse forty-two," he said over and over. "Get a doctor!" Bullet yelled, kneeling beside him. The man gripped Bullet's collar, forcing eye contact. "Harbor... warehouse forty-two.... Killjoy...." He winched in pain. I don't understand," Bullet said. The man coughed up blood. His voice was weaker. "Synthia... in danger... warehouse forty-two. Get help--" Tarrol coughed again and collapsed. Screwdriver knelt on his other side. "He's dead, Bullet." To be continued.... SPY REPORT The sages err'd not in their foretelling of a god descending upon DAL SHANG, for I, Novgorodny Vir, have returned! SAND DANCERS? Who? COLOR CRAYONS is the top team these days, buddies! What's a move up by 3 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to COLOR CRAYONS. Good things come to those who fight well, as POSSE can attest, moving up by 1. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 15 points to SIXKILLER. (Discrete enough, FRIAR DUCK?) A certain someone saw LEPAR at The Blazing Unicorn with the shakes, and now he fails to show up to defend his throne. What a pathetic slob! In DAL SHANG, nothing is permanent (except Death), and we find ourselves a new Duelmaster, ANNABEL BLACKHEART. So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me. My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter. But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights! To quell some nasty rumors, the guys in TIL DEATH DO US PART are not carrying any incurable diseases. No need to avoid 'em. As a woman of good breeding scorns the "warriors" of COLOR CRAYONS, so did that sorry team shy from TIL DEATH DO US PART If challenges were horses, GOBARL could open up a fast food joint! HEMORRHAGE challenged GOBARL! Who says KILLER TUNES are just a bunch of wimps! HEMORRHAGE of KILLER TUNES kept his wits as he defeated GOBARL. Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! Those who owe DEADWOOD of POSSE money and had written him off, take note: he'S BACK FROM THE DARK ARENA!!! AND he'S MAD!!! SMALL BELRAN in the Dark Arena wasn't enough for REVEREND BLOOD of POSSE. Maybe that certain serving girl(?) at The Blazing Unicorn will be! I hear GREY GOOSE of STUMBLIN' DRUNK tired of the battles and was thinking of becoming a priest. GREEN of COLOR CRAYONS saved him the effort of getting references. Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee. Leave me now, you base fools! As the seasons change, and the creatures of the wild change also, so do I feel a yearning to leave this place. DAL SHANG, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Blazing Unicorn. I reply with steel and your women shall cry when they start the body count!!!!!!!!! Remember to sign your posts to whoever from the VC wrote that earlier Ad. -- Dark Knight Blackstorm 4 September 2006 Civil War/The Crusades The next edition of the Civil War series is to be held in Tobir, arena 14, beginning November 25th with a round where all participating managers must DA all 5 of their warriors; in addition all warriors must be prefixed with an A an F or a D in the following manner: A-Broke Stroker or (A) Broke Stroker. Names simply beginning with the letter of your federation will NOT count as properly prefixed! Existing teams are welcome but no warrior who survives the DA who had prior Fight Experience (arena or tourney) will be allowed to score or challenge into the contest teams. There will be an equal number of teams set up for each of the three factions (Andorian, Free Blades, and Delarquan) to create sides as equal as possible. This along with the DA round should set up pretty equal footing for all managers. After the DA there will be another round where you can either DA again or fight your new, or surviving, warriors so they will be set up to challenge an opponent beginning on round 1. So as a recap DA round, turn 0, then turn 1 it begins with the following rules: The Civil War to be held in arena 14. - The contest runs for 10-28 turns (barring ties). - No tourney participation allowed. Teams with warriors participating in any tournament are disqualified. - An even number of teams per faction worked out by the Faction Leaders. No later substitutions are allowed. - If a manager brings in a second team and challenges into the contest he is DQ'd and his side will fight one team short! - Three factions will be participating: Andorian, Delarquan, Free Blades - Everyone prefixes their warrior with A-, F-, or D- (No prefix = disqualification of the warrior) - Turn DA: (The DA Round) November 25, 2006. Every warrior must DA. (Warriors not DA'd on Turn 0 are disqualified) - Turn 0: December 9th, 2006. There will be no scoring this turn it is meant to allow for challenges on turn 1. - Turn 1+: Scoring as detailed below - Each team gets 1 point for defeating a warrior from an opposing team. - Fights against warriors on your team do not generate points in any situation. - The team with the most points each turn gets a Battle Point (if there is a tie for the most points then no Battle Points are accrued) - The first team to 10 Battle Points wins the war - Managers of teams on the winning side each receive a +1 bonus potion to be used on a warrior on their contest team. This must be applied within a month of the conclusion of the contest and the team must have been active on the last turn of the contest. Anyone wishing to participate, and feels they can probably stick around for the duration (don't want to handicap a side, of course unforeseeable events cannot be planned for), should either diplo me at THE DEATH SQUAD(63) in Tobir (arena 14) or place a personal ad in the arena. You may also contact me via the Duel2.com boards! Let me know which faction you would like to fight for! This contest is intended to be open to ALL managers wishing to pit themselves against each other to try and determine which faction has the best managers! -- Street Legal LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS DEADWOOD delivered the death blow upon SARZINA THE BRIGHT in a 2 minute fight.
