Her body was badly beaten and bruised. One of her eyes was swollen shut and black. A deep bruise around her ribcage probably indicated a broken rib or two and made her wince when she reached the cold, damp floor of the underground hideout. "For seven days you have been my guest." He pulled a chair closer and sat down, studying her for any reactions. "Your family must miss you," he said mockingly. She pulled herself up and leaned against the wall. The chains gave her enough slack for that when they were fully loose as they were now. He leaned in. "You can make this stop." "Die, demon," was all she said. "Ha ha ha." He stood, moved closer, knelt beside her and cupped her chin, forcing her to look up at him. "I have done that already." She jerked out of his grip and a bolt of pain shot through her from the broken rib. Hobgoblin smiled, baring his teeth. "Where is the sword, Lord Protector?" "Like I said before, I don't know what you're talking about." "WHERE IS THAT DAMN SWORD!" Hobgoblin was furious with frustration. Synthia was the one smiling now. He took a breath and recomposed himself. "We will see about that," he said, and walked out. Synthia sighed to herself. It got worse every time he came back, but this was the first time she had made him that angry. She would welcome death, if it weren't for the fact that they would need her body for the resurrection. Wherever she was now, it was unlikely that anyone would find her body. But she would not give up the location of the sword of power. Not to anyone, and twice as much not to Hobgoblin. So she sat and waited. There had to be a way to get out of here. That's when she noticed Hobgoblin had left his chair within reach. The Drunken Dragon Tavern: Killjoy, Man-O-War, Sitha, Silver Bullet, and Screwdriver had agreed to meet in the back room every day until something was found. If there was any news, or any clue, they would find each other as quickly as possible. Killjoy sank into her chair tiredly and looked at Silver Bullet. "Well, what have you heard?" The gambler shifted and looked away from her. "I know a lot of... not-so-nice people in this town," he said, "but nobody knows anything about Synthia." "How do you know they're not lying to you?" Killjoy demanded. Her expression was a mix of anger, frustration, and... fear. "Let's just say we have an agreement," Bullet answered. "There is no reason they would lie to me." Killjoy's shoulder slumped a little. "Okay." She turned to Man-O-War and Sitha. "How about you?" "Nothing has come up in Harbor Town. It's quiet," Man-O-War said. "Now that the Guards have left, we plan to search the warehouse for clues," Sitha added. Killjoy was not getting any answers she wanted to hear. "Speaking of the Guard, they still have nothing." Her voice cracked on the last word, and she paused until she could speak calmly again. "So we are no closer to finding Synthia, or even discovering what happened to her." Fatigue was showing on all their faces. None of them had gotten much sleep for days, and they weren't expecting to get much any time soon. There was nothing they could even say to each other that would help, unless they found some new facts. They got up. Bullet and Screwdriver returned to the bar; the others walked outside. Joy turned to speak to Man-O-War and Sitha. "Ma'am?" A boy of sixteen years or so stood in front of them, holding a folded piece of paper. "I was asked to give this to you," he said, and handed it to Joy. She opened it. A clump of blond hair, stained with some that looked like blood, fell into her hand. Her face went white as she read the words on the paper. "Who gave this to you?" she snapped at the boy. He stepped back and pointed across the street. "That man over there. They all looked, but there was no one there. Now. "What's wrong, Joy?" Man-O-War asked. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Man-O-War and Sitha stood silent, waiting. She opened her eyes again, exhaled, and said, "Hobgoblin." Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse: Octavia sat back in her chair, and Triss sat across from her. Over the past few days, most of the team had been away doing who-knew-what, leaving them to take care of the house alone. It gave Octavia plenty of time to search the whole building for the sword. And still nothing. Maybe Tennerus was wrong. Maybe she--Triss--was not a sword-bearer. "Octavia?" Triss was leaning forward, waving her hand in front of her companion. "Oh... yes. I'm sorry." Octavia blinked. She had been deep in thought and hadn't heard a word Triss had said. "I asked you why you had become a gldaitor?" Octavia had rehearsed the answer to that question a thousand times, but now she went blank. "Well... I just wanted to." It was, she acknowledged to herself, a dumb answer. But she couldn't give the true one, not to Triss or anyone else here. "Oh." Triss stared blankly for a moment, having no idea what response to make. "What about you? Are you going to be a gladiator?" Octavia asked. "Me? Oh, no. I'm not a fighter." There was a knock on the outer door. "I'll get it," Octavia said, rising quickly. This conversation was off track, and she was glad to get out of it. She opened the door. On the front porch stood a man of large build, with dark hair and eyes and something foreign about the shape of his face. His clothing was not local. "Killjoy?" he asked. "No, I'm Octavia. She is--" He cut her off with a wave of his hand. "I'm Bobika Vhett. Show me her office. I'll wait for her there." He stepped inside. Octavia drew in her breath with a hiss. Who did this pushy... who did he think he was? But maybe he was someone Killjoy was expecting. How would SHE, Octavia, know, if nobody told her. "Right this way," she snapped. Under the city: Circu walked into the chamber where Synthia was being held. She was sitting against the wall, watching him. "Hey. You're Circu, right?" "Yes, now be quiet." He saw that a chair had been broken against the wall and started to pick up the pieces. "Why are you working for him?" "I said, shut up." He stopped to look at her. "You will end up dead working with him." "Everyone ends up dead. Now shut up." He was getting angry. "Okay, fine. Your funeral." She shrugged one shoulder carefully, then spat on the floor near his feet. "I said shut up!" he snarled, turning to walk towards her. As soon as he was in range, she pulled a leg of the broken chair out from behind her and smashed it against his knee. He fell, clutching the joint. "Like I said," and she plunged the jagged end of the leg into his chest. It wasn't quite enough to kill him, but it sure got his attention. She grabbed his dagger and finished the job. "You will end up dead working for him." After a quick search, she found some keys on his body and unlocked her hands and feet from the steel cuffs. "Very nice." The demonic timbre of Hobgoblin's voice was unmistakeable. Synthia spun to face him, the dagger still in her hand. "I see there is some fight left in you yet," he said, walking into the room with his sword drawn. He looked down at the dead Circu and curled his lip in a brief sneer. "There's someone I would like you to meet." He waved his hand at Rix, behind him in the doorway, and a third person with hands tied and a black hood over his--her head. "What is this?" Synthia asked. "'This' is the reason you will be telling me everything I want to know." Hobgoblin pulled the hood away to reveal Killjoy, gagged. "You see? You may be able to be brought back to life, being a Lord Protector. But I know she can't." Synthia's eyes widened in disbelief. "Now. Where is the Sword?" Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse: Man-O-War and Sitha walked out to the guildhouse from the city gate. Joy was to meet them here with supplies for the assault on Hobgoblin. After a week of getting nowhere, it was good to have some kind of objective again. The door to Killjoy's office was open, which was the first surprise. "Well, hello, Cousin," the man on the couch said. Man-O-War stared for a moment, shocked. "Bobika!" He walked forward, arms reaching, and the man met him half way across the room. They embraced. "How long has it been?" "Too long." The stranger shifted his attention to Sitha, who was smiling at them both. "And you, you are as beautiful as Linsiris herself. What is your name?" "I'm Sitha Nisanli," she said. "And my wife-to-be," Man-O-War finished. "What brings you to Dal Shang?" "I'm to become a gladiator," he answered. "Your stories have brought a few of us down here. Too much peace in the north, not enough fighting. So where is Killjoy?" "She'll be here shortly. It's great to see you, Bobika." "You too, Aranthar. So, is there anything exciting going on around here? SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly DAL SHANG games. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week REFUGEES went 1-2-0 to move up 3 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which STUMBLIN' DRUNK managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! LISSANE TYL DRU caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as she skillfully bested CHIANA and was awarded 16 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, LISSANE TYL DRU put down CHIANA, causing her to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has UGLY DUCKING in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet again. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps? I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. DAL SHANG, city of gladiators! Mighty among the names of thy guilds is STUMBLIN' DRUNK, a guild shunned and avoided by many in the weekly duels. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find any of GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS last week. Busy avoiding STUMBLIN' DRUNK? Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. GOBARL take warning! You have more than a few enemies in DAL SHANG. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that REVEREND BLOOD posted a challenge against the more highly recognized JAEGO SARL. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand REVEREND BLOOD was beat by JAEGO SARL. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. The group consists of the following members: Doc LeGrande Apex Street Legal Carnage Ghoti Roadkill Valamond This group has only one rule. Respect the play of the managers of this alliance. We have no worries about not playing by the rules set forth by others. We fight the way we like, and all those in this group appreciate what tools each manager brings. We have managers from the Delarquan, Andorian and Free Blade regions. We have managers that focus on the tournament arenas, and we have those that focus on the regular city arenas. We have those in our ranks that fight with honor and respect for all, and we have those that have a bloodlust that cannot be quenched. Our goal is simple. To create a ensemble of managers that will show their prowess in the land of Alastari, and to bring a new level of competition to all those that share the sands with our warriors. Our warriors are many throughout the land. We have no home arena. We have no pacts we abide by. Our fighters range from Mordant to Talcama, from Lapur to Lyratilan, Aruak City to Valamantis, the Primus arena to Talahya, and many more arenas throughout the land. Whether we are sought out or ignored makes no difference to us. We are what we are. We fight how we fight. And we do it however we wish. We have no rules. We have no leader or ruler. Be prepared. We are. 20 October 2006 The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire respond thus to the Avengers of the Light: Where are you? EACH AND EVERY Dark Knight can be found in arenas 31 and 52.
