It was making good speed, and the spray flung back by the bow wave coated his face and dripped off his chin. "Lean over any farther and we may have to fish you out of the sea." Weasel glanced over his shoulder at his brother. Lameto-Kesino was a Lord Protector from the Sand Dancers, and as relaxed as Weasel himself was tense. Weasel shrugged and smiled and walked back to join him on the bench that ran along the cabin's outer wall. "I just have this feeling that we need to hurry, that we need to BE there as fast as possible," he said. Then he shrugged again. It was probably just his natural impatience and the difficulty of getting any real exercise on this little ship. To change the subject, he asked, "How is Jinx?" "Still sick. She is not enjoying this at all. That storm last night was too much for her." Lameto chuckled. "Well, we must be nearly to Dal Shang by now. We should land sometime today." Weasel squinted at the mist and listened to the waves crashing into the hull of their ship. "Soon," he said. "I see land!" The shout came from somewhere overhead. Both gladiators stood, peering forward. The mist was thin, and there was a line of darker blue marking the horizon. A lumpy line, shaping the hills around Dal Shang. Sparkles from sun on rain-wet roof tiles. "Dal Shang." "Yes. Let's go get Jinx." Under the city: Killjoy lay face down, gagged, her hands and feet bound. Rix stood beside her with his foot propped on her back like she was a trophy from a big game hunt. Hobgoblin stood with his sword drawn in the center of the room. Synthia had her back to the far wall, dagger in hand and ready for whatever was going to happen next. "Put down the dagger," Hobgoblin snarled. "You have been a bad girl!" Synthia stood silently, weighing options and distances. Her whole body ached from the beatings she had endured over the last few days. She looked at Joy on the floor and was determined not to let her friend suffer the same fate she herself had. Resolution crystalized, and she leaped forward, slashing at Hobgoblin. Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse: Sitha looked around Killjoy's office, then at Man-O-War. "You don't think she would have... you know. By herself? Without us?" "I wouldn't put it past her," he answered grimly. He thought for a moment, then shook his head. "That's exactly what she WOULD do." "What?" Bobika asked. "Bobika, this doesn't concern you," Man-O-War said quickly. "We have to go. Wait here, will you?" "No." That answer caught Man-O-War in mid stride. It wasn't what he expected, and he didn't know what to do with it. "What?" "No," Bobika said again. "Obviously, you're trying to protect me. Trust me, there is no need. I'm here to help, like it or not. Man-O-War stared for a moment, then smiled slowly. "Okay, then. You can come with us. I think I know where Killjoy will be." Under the city: Blood beaded on the small cut across Hobgoblin's cheek and began to trickle down. He wiped it off and looked at his hand, then back to Synthia, his face expresionless. She was poised to meet a counter attack. His lip curled in a cold smile. Without looking away from her, he said, "Rix, give me your sword." Rix blinked but didn't argue. He walked over and handed his sword to Hobgoblin, then went back to stand over Killjoy. "You want to play?" Hobgoblin asked. He threw the sword down at Synthia's feet. "Then let's play." She hesitated, then knelt and picked up the sword, tucking the dagger into the waistband of her underclothes. "You will have one chance at this," Hobgoblin said. His eyes flared red, and his pointed teeth were clenched together. "And then I'll kill you." Sparks flew as the swords clashed together. The sound of metal on metal echoed off the chamber walls until it was almost deafening. Synthia was moving fast despite her pain, dodging and attacking, pushing hard to try and take the initiative. Hobgoblin... was relaxed; he barely seemed to be trying, as though it was all a game for him. But his blade was everywhere to counter hers. Man-O-War looked around the tunnel and nodded. Yes. He looked up at the manhole and the faces of his companions. "I think this is it," he said. Sitha and Bobika climbed down the ladder to join him, and Sitha lit two torches, handing one to each man. "I have been in town one day, and already I'm in the sewer," Bobika said, wrinkling his nose. "That's got to be a record for you then, hmm?" Man-O-War and Bobika laughed. Sitha waved for them to be quiet. They stilled and listened. Faint sounds, metal sounds. "That's got to be her," Man-O-War said. The three of them began to run. Synthia parried, and the blades slid against each other with a tooth-jarring screech until they were locked hilt to hilt. Hobgoblin used his greater weight to smasher her back against the wall. "You missed your chance," he hissed, crushing her against the stones, driving the air from her lungs. She twisted under his pressure, getting one hand free and reaching for the dagger. With her last strength, she slammed it into his side. He jumped back, shocked and furious, the dagger embedded to the hilt. Synthia drew a deep breath, coughing, and tried to regain her strength, to get her sword up into a guard position. Hobgoblin was not defeated, and she knew that he would not just... quit. He'd probably never meant her to have a real chance with the sword; it was just another way of playing with her. Hobgoblin looked down and bared his teeth, then pulled the dagger from his side and threw it against the wall. Blood oozed out for a moment and stopped. "Bitch!" He spat at her and then lunged suddenly, moving faster than she had yet seen him do, swing his sword. She blocked it, but not fast enough, and the blade sliced across her belly. Hobgoblin turned away without watching her fall. "NO!" Man-O-War came in just in time to see Synthia fall. Hobgoblin smiled and charged him. Sitha and Bobika took down Rix with no problem. Sitha continued on to aid Synthia, and Bobika knelt to untie Killjoy. Man-O-War squared off against Hobgoblin. "Why did you do this?" he asked, not really expecting an answer. Hobgoblin looked over at Bobika, who had just finished untying Killjoy, then muttered a few words Man-O-War couldn't understand. The floor came alive and grabbed hold of Bobika and Killjoy, gripping their legs like deep mud and then hardening again. Holding them, preventing them getting into the fight or helping Synthia. Man-O-War struck, and Hobgoblin blocked it. "We have to get her out of here!" Sitha said, trying to stop Synthia's bleeding. "Yes, you do," Hobgoblin said, baring his teeth again. "Not much time left for her. What will you do, fallen knight?" His tone was mocking, and his grin widened as Man-O-War's eyes darted to Synthia and then back. "Whenever one of Greywand's Lord Protectors is brought back to life, another soul has to take its place in Ahringol's land of the dead, you know." He watched closely for Man-O-War's reactions. "For a Lord Protector to be resurrected, an innocent dies." "You're lying." "You're wasting time." "Kill him, Aranthar," Killjoy commanded. She was trying to pull herself free of the ground, but without success. "Yessss, kill me. Meanwhile, Synthia dies. And you take an innocent life when she is brought back, an innocent life... one like Millisen. Remember her?" "Leave her out of this!" Man-O-War yelled. "Destroy him, Aranthar!" Killjoy commanded. "HA HA HA HA HA!" Man-O-War shook his head in disgust and ran to help Sitha with Synthia. By the time Bobika got himself and Joy free, Hobgoblin was gone. Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse: Octavia and Triss sat in Triss's room laughing. All kinds of things, silly things they'd done when they were kids, past boyfriends, everything that came to mind. Over the past few weeks, they had formed a friendship, and it seemed a strong one. A good one for both of them. Octavia brushed the tears of laughter from her eyes. "Gods, that was so funny, I can see his face now, when he said-- And then I said-- Oh, gods!" She went off into another burst of laughter. Triss flopped back on the bed, holding her sides. "Oh... I never laughed like that before!" She sat up, still smiling. "Octavia? We are good friends, right?" "Well... yes, Triss, I think so." "And we can trust each other, right?" "Of course." Octavia wondered what strange line this conversation had suddenly taken. Where was Triss going with it? "Okay." Triss jumped up and went to her closet, bring out a bundle that filled her arms. "I have a secret that I want to share with you," she said as she unwrapped the sword. "This is a special sword...." Octavia was speechless. The arena Infirmary: "She will need to stay here for a while, but she'll be fine," the doctor said to Man-O-War and Sitha. "Good. I was worried that..." Man-O-War shook his head. "I was worried," he said. He turned toward Killjoy. She was standing at the back of the room, and her eyes narrowed as they approached her. "She's going to be fine," Man-O-War repeated. "Synthia will--" "Don't!" Killjoy said sharply. "Don't pretend everything is going to be okay, Aranthar." He shook his head, confused. "I just--" "You had your chance to kill him, and you didn't take it." "But... there was no TIME!" "Look at her." Sitha pointed to Synthia. "She is alive still because of him, because he didn't put your vengeance above her life." "And who else will die?" Killjoy demanded. "Hobgoblin doesn't care who he kills. He has to be stopped. And if you're too scared to do it, then I don't need you," she growled at Man-O-War. She turned and left. The ex-gladiator was silent, not sure what to think about Killjoy's statements. Sitha moved in under his arms and gave him a hug. "She is just upset. She didn't mean what she said." "No... I think she meant it." He shook his head and hugged her back. On the street at night: A cloaked figure raced through the alleys of Dal Shang, looking behind to make sure no one followed. "Octavia." Her name had never sounded so frightening before, but this time chills ran up her spine. She looked around but could not see him. "Do you have it?" "Yes." She saw the glowing red eyes now, in the darkest part of the alley. They were coming closer. "Give it to me." He held out his hands, and she put the sword into them, suddenly reluctant. "You can go now," he said, caressing the sheath. "Where to? Back to the team?" "I don't care. But I'm going to kill each one of those fools." He slid the sword out of its sheath and swung it a couple of times. Power hummed in the alley. Octavia blinked in confusion. "But... you're taking the sword to Tenerus, aren't you?" "Hahahahaha...! Oh, Octavia. You just don't understand." He grinned, and what little light there was glinted off his teeth. "I'm going to gather all the swords for myself. And then this land will learn what Pain is. With all the swords, not even Greywand's Lord Protectors will be able to stop me. And you... you will be the one I thank for making it possible. HA HA HA HA HA!" To be continued.... SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, DAL SHANG? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, MIGHTY DUCKS, since STUMBLIN' DRUNK took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see IRISH CREAM win a fight and gain 20 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, LONDEL TYL SARH beat PUCKER and PUCKER lost 10 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, DAL SHANG may be getting bland, as UGLY DUCKING stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, DAL SHANG? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's the big D? POSSE was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered... grumble... mumble... curse... And it looks like GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. GOBARL was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this one, but MADE IT HOME has challenged up by 42 in an attempt against KO LAO-DEN. My sides still hurt from laughing about KO LAO-DEN losing and giving MADE IT HOME 28 points of recognition. Ha ha ha ha!! Ah, now we come to my favorite part, where we see all the guys who are dead and gone, and get to see if their team cared. Let's see, 12-6-0. Pretty good record for a living warrior. A sad one though, for a dead one. Such is the case for M2 MALLARD of MIGHTY DUCKS. Tsk. Three down, and one turn to go for POSSE to call in the bloodfeud against UGLY DUCKING, else ANNABEL BLACKHEART is but small history. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what brave team is developing these kinds of weapons? There's got to be a better place in DAL SHANG to get a drink than The Blazing Unicorn! Any suggestions? Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of DAL SHANG. I feel much better now. The group consists of the following members: Doc LeGrande Apex Street Legal Carnage Ghoti Roadkill Valamond This group has only one rule. Respect the play of the managers of this alliance. We have no worries about not playing by the rules set forth by others. We fight the way we like, and all those in this group appreciate what tools each manager brings. We have managers from the Delarquan, Andorian and Free Blade regions. We have managers that focus on the tournament arenas, and we have those that focus on the regular city arenas. We have those in our ranks that fight with honor and respect for all, and we have those that have a bloodlust that cannot be quenched. Our goal is simple. To create a ensemble of managers that will show their prowess in the land of Alastari, and to bring a new level of competition to all those that share the sands with our warriors. Our warriors are many throughout the land. We have no home arena. We have no pacts we abide by. Our fighters range from Mordant to Talcama, from Lapur to Lyratilan, Aruak City to Valamantis, the Primus arena to Talahya, and many more arenas throughout the land. Whether we are sought out or ignored makes no difference to us. We are what we are. We fight how we fight. And we do it however we wish. We have no rules. We have no leader or ruler. Be prepared. We are. 20 October 2006 The Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire respond thus to the Avengers of the Light: Where are you? EACH AND EVERY Dark Knight can be found in arenas 31 and 52. Your pretty words mean less than nothing if you won't fight. EVERY Dark Knight is more than willing to back up their talk. So...we give you three turns in either 31 or 52, REPEAT 31 or 52 to show up or shut up. If you don't show we'll let all of Alastari know the Avengers are indeed cowards! -- Dark Knights of the Desolate Empire 2 November 2006 I received a Gift Certificate from someone.
