What do you mean, gone?" Killjoy reached for Triss, wanting to pull more information out of her, but the young woman wasn't listening. Triss looked at Octavia through the tears streaming down her face. "It's gone..." she whispered. She threw herself into the other woman's arms, burying her face in the folds of Octavia's shirt. Surprised, Octavia hugged her back, giving what comfort she could. The others talked, debating what might have happened and what they could do about it now. But Octavia couldn't get the image of the night before out of her mind. Of when she had handed the sword to Hobgoblin. He had smiled at her, a cruel baring of the teeth. "You will be the one I thank for making it possible," he had said, and he'd laughed. His voice and his laugh echoed in her mind. She thought she might never be free of that memory. "How could it be gone?" Triss's voice was muffled in Octavia's shirt. "How could I have betrayed the trust of my father and all the sword-bearers?" Octavia stroked Triss's back, her heart breaking for what she had done to her friend. She could have answered that question, told Triss that her only failure was in trusting too much in others. It was wrong that such friendliness should lead to this pain, but it had happeend. "Whoever took the sword has to be a magician of some kind," Killjoy said. She stood close to the other sand tried to keep her voice down. "Why do you say that?" Jinx asked. Killjoy shrugged. "There is always someone here. There's no way an ordinary person could just walkin and take the sword," she said. "I know some pretty good thieves," Weasel countered. Lameto was shaking his head. "No, it couldn't have been any serious magical spell. If it had been... where are the guards? The priests? They would have detected a spell in use and come to find out what was going on. Magic is illegal here." "Yes, but the guildhouse is close to the arena, and gladiators are allowed a certain amount of freedom, as long as they only use magic on each other," Killjoy said bitterly. "And the priests wouldn't have detected...." She stopped and frowned. "What?" the three guests said, all at the same time. "Well... what if it was NOT magic." The others looked confused, but she went on, "You remember what I told you about. You know...." "You mean Hobgoblin?" Weasel completed her sentence and frowned himself. "HOBGOBLIN!!!" Triss spun around, eyes wide. "You know him?" Killjoy asked. "That's Tennerus's right-hand man." Triss pulled away from Octavia and came over to the others. Her eyes were bloodshot and her face was streaked with her tears. "Is he the one that took it?" Octavia stood silent, watching. "You don't suppose... Synthia told him it was here, do you?" Weasel asked. "No," Joy said quickly. "She WAS with him a long time," Lameto cut in. "A week, right?" "She wouldn't!" Joy defended her friend. "We know what he is capable of, Joy," Weasel said. "Fine, we'll prove it," Killjoy snapped. She turned to the door, then glanced back over her shoulder. "Octavia, stay here with Triss. She needs a friend right now." Then she led the others out the door, leaving Octavia alone with Triss. Man-O-War finished feeding his horse, then stepped out of the stable, pulling the door shut. The stable stood behind the guildhouse, separated from it by a yard used by the gladiators for practicing. The yard was empty now, so late at night, and the neighborhood was silent, the air faintly perfumed with woodsmoke. Man-O-War looked up, admiring the starry river of the Milky Way against the black sky, picking out a few familiar constellations. They were lower in the northern sky here than they had been back home in Torasin, but they were the same stars. The new peace inside him made it easier to accept that. Things were going to change, and for the better. Well, he hoped for the better, but who could really know? But at least there would be changes. He entered through the back of the guildhouse and started for the stairs, then stopped. He could hear Octavia's voice, no words, but the murmur of sound, and Triss's sobbing. He hesitated with his foot on the step, torn by conflicting impulses. He hated having to deal with women in tears, he never knew what to say. But Triss was a friend. Finally he turned and opened the door to the common room and peeked in. He could see the two women sitting side by side on the long couch; Octavia had her arm around Triss and was stroking the younger woman's hair with her other hand. It looked like... more than just every day problems. "What's wrong?" he asked, coming all the way into the room and dropping to one knee beside Triss. "The sword is gone," Triss said, the words barely audible. "Gone?" Octavia sat quietly and listened while Triss told again what had happened. She didn't look at Man-O-War; she knew him only slightly and had thought him stern and distant. Not someone she wanted to know better. And she had her own problems. She felt real pain for Triss. At first, it had been all about her job for Tennerus and nothing else. But something had happened over the past few days, something she hadn't really understood until now. She really did care for Triss. Triss was her friend. "It was me," Octavia said quietly. She didn't look up, and her hand continued to stroke Triss as though she didn't even notice what she was doing. Man-O-War and Triss started at her for a full minute. Finally Man-O-War said, "What? Say that again?" This time she raised her head, meeting his eyes. "It was me," she repeated. "I stole the sword." A tear ran down her cheek. "You...?" Triss stared at her in shock. "Why?" "I was sent by Tennerus--" "Where is it?" Man-O-War demanded, leaping to his feet. His voice was more stern and commanding than either woman had ever heard it. "I gave it to Hobgoblin. I--" "That's enough!" He grabbed her collar and pulled her to her feet. "You come in here. You LIE to us. You make us think you're our friend! Then you steal a Sword of Power and you give it to... that DEMON!" He shook her, hard, and then pushed her up against the wall and pulled out his sword. "NO!" Triss yelled. She jumped up and forced herself between the two. "Aranthar, stop!" "Get out of the way, Triss," he said. "Do it." Octavia lowered her head and shut her eyes. "I deserve anything you can do." "Aranthar, this is not you," Triss said. "Please. Please don't do this. She is my friend." Octavia opened her eyes and looked at Triss in shock. Man-O-War looked at her in anger. "Triss, SHE is everything you ran away from. She is probably the one that got Longshot killed! Now step aside and let me do what must be done." "There are other ways. I beg you, Aranthar, please don't do this," Triss said. "I know how to find him," Octavia offered. "We can catch him." Man-O-War turned back to her, eyes narrowed, and studied her for a moment that seemed endless. Then he nodded sharply. "You'd better hope so." He pulled Octavia away from the wall and shoved her toward the door. To Triss he said, "You stay here. When you see Sitha, don't tell her anything. I'm going to take care of this." He pushed Octavia out into the night. Somewhere else: Hobgoblin could see flames dancing in the night and nodded; this was the right place. He dismounted and led his horse toward the campfire. As he drew near, one of the figures by the fire stood up and stepped closer. "Hobgoblin! It's been a long time." He extended his hand and Hobgoblin took it. "Did you bring her, Fractured Skull?" he asked the Lord Protector from Bodily Harm. "Yes, I did." He turned back toward the fire and waved. Shortly a hooded figure moved out of the darkness and around the fire circle to them. "Savra," Skull said, "meet Hobgoblin." She held out her hand, the skin as white as moonlight. Hobgoblin gripped it, considered squeezing in challenge but rejected that idea. There was strength in the colorless flesh, and magic rain under her skin like an icy river. "So," he said, "a necromancer. I'm looking forward to seeing you at work." His eyes flashed red. "And I, you," she said. The guildhouse: Sitha and Bobika walked into the front hall of the guildhouse shortly after Man- O-War had departed. They found Triss pacing anxiously. "Hello, Triss," Sitha said. "Have you seen Aranthar?" "Oh my god, I'm glad you're here!" Triss ran up to them and caught hold of Sitha's hands. "We don't have much time!" "For what? I'll help if I can, but you have to explain, Triss." "The Sword is gone. Hobgoblin has it. And Aranthar went after him with Octavia." Sitha shook her head. "Slow down, Triss, and tell me what happened and when. I have to understand before I can help." "Did you say that... THING we fought in the sewer...? He has 'the sword'? What sword?" Bobika frowned. "This isn't making sense, you know." "It's a Sword of Power," Triss answered impatiently. "And yes, he has it." "Do you know where he went?" Sitha asked, frowning. Her hand went automatically to her own sword. The thought of Hobgoblin with a Sword of Power was not a good one. "I do," Triss said. "And I know where we can get another sword!" To be continued.... DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. No ghost here, Woody. Just flesh and blood. And it feels so sweet to be back. I had a short time to think in between my fights during the tourney, and all I thought about was rezzing and coming back to avenge myself. Well I'm back, and rest assured the fire has been fueled, and I'm going to bring the pain. My challenge goes to Loner this turn. Since the Spymaster says that Assur was avoiding my stable, I guess he doesn't want a title shot. So be it. Annabel Blackheart Alive with Bloodlust SPY REPORT Greetings, Warriors of DAL SHANG. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Nothing works for a team like victory (How's that for a perceptive observation?) as SAND DANCERS can attest... STUMBLIN' DRUNK had cause to celebrate, after AMORE' got 25 points by beating UGLY DUCKING. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 20 points to AMORE'. (Discrete enough, UGLY DUCKING?) The arena was more crowded than usual this time, as LONER faced DAL SHANG's Duelmaster. Now I can't insult LONER, as he has gloriously dueled to the top. Oh great new Duelmaster!!! (Stop me if I lay it on too thick) So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me. So much to report, so little time! Like a horde of jackals fleeing from the lion, so did the "warriors" in DAL SHANG avoid POSSE. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS scurried away from POSSE. Oh, the shame! Is it charming personality? Conversational abilities? Good oral hygiene? Whatever it is, GOBARL is the most challenged warrior. Take heed DAL SHANG, of the unprincipled action of MADE IT HOME. By challenging KO LAO-DEN, 19 points below him, MADE IT HOME besmirches the noble art of dueling. Bookies and MADE IT HOME were more than a little surprised, as KO LAO-DEN snatched an easy victory from MADE IT HOME, gaining 9 points. Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! Justice was served as VALARION fought LONESTAR in bloodfeud. Well done, TIL DEATH DO US PART! Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious stupor. Do not think spyreporting in DAL SHANG is the highlight of my life. More important duties call me. Can anything compare to the pleasure of writing Spyreports for DAL SHANG? This idea was originally proposed by Lord Xiang in November 2005. RSI will be opening the arena (81) for teams willing to sign the following pledge: * I pledge that I will not send warriors from this arena to a Tournament, nor will I use a Tournament prize on a warrior from this arena. * I pledge to run a full team when I run turns in this arena. If circumstances preclude my running less than a full team I will notify the Player Committee. * I agree to abide by the decisions of the Player Committee. * I understand that any warrior that participates in a Tournament shall be sent to the Dark Arena until they are dead. * I understand that any warrior that receives a Tournament prize shall be send to the Dark Arena until they are dead. The following are the rules for joining this No-Tournament arena 1. No tournament play for warriors in this arena (Dead tournament or otherwise). 2. One team per manager. 3. Teams start with new rollup (or a zero fight equivalent team is transferred into this arena.) 4. No tourney prizes allowed to modify warriors in the arena. 5. Twenty teams required, per RSI. 6. Waivers are required to allow self-regulation on tourney ban, granting RSI authority to Dark Arena any warrior that participates in a Tournament (until the warrior is dead). 7. Rotating council to enforce tourney ban and maintain arena integrity. The main purpose of the Player Committee is to maintain fair play in the arena: * Warriors that participate in Tournaments will be sent to the Dark Arena until they are dead. This means that the Player Committee has the power to send another player's warrior to the Dark Arena * Managers that abuse the rules of the Arena may be banned/transferred from the Arena. The player with the most votes for Chairman will fill slot 1 [Chairperson] and that term expires end of March 2007. The player with the most votes overall will fill slot 5 and that term expires end of November 2007. The player with the second most votes overall will fill slot 4 and that term expires end of September 2007. The player with the third most votes overall will fill slot 3 and that term expires end of November 2007. The player with the fourth most votes overall will fill slot 2 and that term expires end of May 2007. During the month that the chairperson's term expires the Player Committee will select one of the remaining 4 players to be the next chairperson. During the month that any member's term expires the arena will vote for a different player to join the Players' Committee. If you want to be a candidate for the player committee: 1. Post a message in the Duel2 Forum at http://www.reality.com/duel2/modules.php?name=Forums 2. E-Mail Deke at DekeYoung@Comcast.NET 3. I hope I never give out this award {figure it out on your own.} The Team Advancement Award: The first team to graduate 5 warriors to ADM. In the case that there is more than 1 team that graduates 5 warriors on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the first team to graduate 6 warriors. In the case that there is more than 1 team that graduates 6 warriors on the same turn, I will pay the Award to the first team to graduate 7 warriors, and so on. The Iron Throne Award: The first team to hold the Duelmaster for 10 turns STARTING ON TURN 11. The Stylemaster Award. The first team to hold the Stylemaster Award in 7 different styles, STARTING ON TURN 11. If two teams obtain Stylemaster Awards in 7 styles on the same turn, the goal will be increased to 8 Styles. Team Recognition Points: The total recognition points for all warriors in the arena The Iron Throne Ledger: We will track who has been the Duelmaster every turn in Arena history. Iron Throne Counter: The total number of times a team has been the Duelmaster. Composite Team Stylemaster awards: The number of times a team has had any of the 10 Stylemasters. Having 2 Stylemasters = 2 points that turn. Challenge win percentage: How often your warriors win when they challenge. Challenge Defender rate: How often your warriors win when they WERE challenged. Team Invitations: Number of warriors graduated to ADM. Team Graduation Rate: Total team fights/Graduated Warriors. Team Kill Percentage: Total of team Kills/Team Fights Team Death Percentage: Total of Team Deaths/Team Fights Team Revenge Rate: Number of Deaths/BloodFeuds Revenged (Note that the Dark Arena will be counted as not-revenged.) You only get credit for one successful BloodFeud per death (though I encourage you to BloodFeud all 4 turns.) Current Win Streaks: Warriors that have gone the most turns without losing or missing a turn. Team Yahtzee counter: Number of times a team has gone 5-0 in a turn. Team Bagel counter: Number of times a team has fought without a win. Team Dark Arena counter: Number of times each team has used the Dark Arena. The Most Feared (avoided) Team counter: Number of turns that team was the most avoided team. We will create a web page just for Arena 81 category leaders. Hope to see you there. -- Deke 18 December 2006 Let it be known that Buddy Lee is no longer a member of The Company of Brothers, T.C.B. I have resigned as of 10-23-06. Thank you.
