A castle in the north:

"What the hell is going on!" Tennerus slammed his fist against the window
frame. He watched in horror as outside in the courtyard an army of zombies and
skeletons armed moved against his men. Fought against his men. They were armed with
broken swords and shields and clothed as they had died, in the same household livery
his own men wore. His men went down, and it wasn't long before they stood again and
turned, empty-eyed, on their former friends.
"Burn them!" Tennerus yelled out the window. "Cut them to pieces!" A movement
just outside the treeline caught his eye, and he stared, squinting against the light.
A person. A female. Next to her stood a man defending her from anyone who came
close. He could tell the man had been well trained by the way he killed everyone who
came near, his movements fast and precise. But it wasn't until she raised her arms
and the green cloud lifted from the fallen men that he understood what she was.
"Necromancer," he said to himself.
"She is good." The chilling voice of Hobgoblin completing his sentence made
Tennerus jump.
"Hobgoblin! Thank the gods you're here!" He turned, smiling. Now he felt
safe.
"Don't thank them. They have nothing to do with me," Hobgoblin said, walking
toward the taller man.
"You have to stop this," Tennerus went on, turning back to look out the window
again. "You must stop... that!"
"Why would I want to stop it?" Hobgoblin asked, a crooked smirk on his face.
Tennerus's face went slack with shock, and he tried to take a step back but came
up against the wall. "You--!" He pulled free his sword.
Windsong came to life in Hobgoblin's hands and shattered the common blade that
Tennerus held, knocking him to the ground with the hurricane force of the blow. Only
the hilt was left to him, but he didn't let it go. "My sword," he said quietly,
looking at Windsong.
Hobgoblin turned away, contempt in his obvious certainty that Tennerus was not a
risk, and began pulling books off the shelves.
Tennerus's eyes darted around the room, looking for a way to turn the tables on
the situation, or simply to escape. Why has this man, this half-demon, betrayed me?
I took him in when no one else would have done so. "Why?"
"You do not get to ask me anything," Hobgoblin said coldly. He continued
searching among the books.
     "What are you looking fo--"
"Speak again, and I will rip out your voice box. You won't be needing that for
what I'm doing."
Tennerus sat silent, his back to the wall. He knew Hobgoblin well enough to
know that the half-demon was a lot of bad things, but the one thing he wasn't was a
liar. And he also knew what Hobgoblin was looking for. For the first time in a very
long time, Tennerus thought of his father.

At the outpost:

"Hold the door!" Man-O-War yelled, looking around for anything he could grab to
barricade it.
The beating and pounding of the assault on the door echoed through the small
tower, and there were occasional bigger thumps that almost knocked Octavia away from
the door. "Hurry!" she gasped, readjusting her grip and stance as her feet began to
slide again.
"Where did they come from?" he asked, pushing a heavy table in front of the
door. He added other furniture, the heaviest in the room.
"The woods," Octavia said, wiping sweat from her face. She stepped back from
the door cautiously, waiting to see if the table would hold. "I think they are the
men who were supposed to be living here."
"So you're saying he killed them? I didn't think Hobgoblin could make these."
A gesture indicated the zombies who were now pounding mindlessly against the door.
"He can't, I'm almost certain of that," she said. The barricade was holding.
She sank down into a chair, trembling now that she had a moment to think.
"He must have help, then," Man-O-War said. He sat down across from her. "This
changes things a bit." He frowned.
"But why kill these men? They were on his side."
Man-O-War's lip curled in distaste. "No one is ever really on his side, because
he is never on anyone else's side," he said out of his long experience with
Hobgoblin.
"I just don't see any reason for it."
"Octavia." Man-O-War faced her squarely, his seriousness compelling her
attention. "What does Tennerus want with the swords? What is his plan?" It was the
first time on this journey that he'd spoken to her without anger in his voice. "What
is his plan?"
"He's a collector. He has a place in his castle made to display them."
Man-O-War shook his head. "All this... Longshot, Synthia, those men outside...
all of this for a collection?" He shook his head, finding it hard to believe, though
he knew that some collectors were said to become obsessed with the objects they
sought.
     "Yes," she said.
The pounding at the door continued.

Tennerus's castle:

"Ah!" Hobgoblin held up a book, thick, ancient, bound in some dark leather.
"Find it?" the former gladiator Fractured Skull asked, standing in the hallway.
Behind him, peering around his shoulder, was Savra the Necromancer. The screams in
the hallway had stopped, replaced by the groaning and moaning of an undead army.
Hobgoblin waved them in and opened the book to show them the map drawn inside
the back cover. "This is where we're going," he said, pointing to a spot south of
Dal Shang. "Down here in the Twisted Lands." He looked over at Tennerus. "Let's
go. We are going to go meet your great ancestor's pet."

The watchtower:

The two gladiators sat and talked inside their self-imprisonment. Mostly they
talked about what had happened, in Dal Shang and before, and what might be happening
now. Talked with such concentration that they didn't notice at first when the
pounding stopped and was replaced by a barely audible voice.
"Aranthar?" The muffled voice came through the door.
"Sitha!" He jumped up and started pulling his barricade apart. He could hear
her saying something to someone else, but not clearly enough to understand the words.
Once the door was clear, he pulled it open. Sitha stood in front of the rest
with a smile on her face. Man-O-War wasted no time in lifting her up in his arms and
squeezing her as though to join the two of them into one body. She hugged him back,
wrapping her arms around his head. "I knew I could count on you," he said.
"Of course you can!" she said, when he put her down and she got her breath back.
Then she smacked him upside the head, making the others step back and cringe. "And
that is for not waiting," she said, smiling.
He smiled, too, a bit ruefully, and rubbed his face.
Octavia came out and stood away from the rest, watching them. Until Triss
walked up to her. They held eye contact for a long moment.
Then Triss stepped forward and gave her a big hug. "I'm glad you're safe," she
said to her friend.
"Hey, Aranthar! We found a friend of yours." Wild Weasel was towing Man-O-
War's horse behind him.
     Man-O-War smiled. "Thanks."
"He's a tough horse. I found one of those things dead... or dead again, next to
it."
The group talked a little longer, then reorganized horses and supplies and
headed on their way.
     Next stop, Tennerus's castle.

To be continued....

                                      SPY REPORT

Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in DAL
SHANG. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! It
looks like the guys(?) at SAND DANCERS had a good week as they went 4-1-0 to put them
in 2nd place. I guess steroids help! Hey everybody, watch out for LONESTAR, who
flew up 30 points in the rankings after mashing VALARION like a melon. Keep your eye
on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was BLACK VELVET, who dropped
16 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with JOEVINA SARIL. What
does the Duelmaster and Piltdown Man have in common? They are both the most
challenged apes in human history! Heyheyhey! Drawing on all of his experience as a
13-9-2 warrior, SCREWDRIVER went for the Duelmastership against LONER this week.
Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody knuckles was STUMBLIN'
DRUNK's SCREWDRIVER, who was turned away from the Duelmastership by LONER. An apple
a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the DAL SHANG arena. Here's
a song for you: Who's afraid of the big, bad STUMBLIN' DRUNK? Big bad STUMBLIN'
DRUNK. Big bad STUMBLIN' DRUNK. DAL SHANG's afraid of the big bad STUMBLIN' DRUNK.
Tra la la la la! Okay, so I may not be funny, but catch GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS' act in
the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running from STUMBLIN' DRUNK.
Challenging down 36 points was MADE IT HOME. Pretty soon he'll be using two shields
and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Definition of petty: MADE IT
HOME defeated IRISH CREAM, a mismatch of 36 points. Was it guts or an overtaxed
mental capacity that had SIXKILLER challenge up 26 points in the rankings to take on
FRIAR DUCK? To the crowd's chants of 'Bo-zo bo-zo bo-zo', FRIAR DUCK was taken out
by the lower-ranked SIXKILLER. (Maybe it's time to think Dark Arena?).
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! It's not often when you see a 10-6-0 warrior like LISSANE
TYL DRU kick the bucket. I wonder if SAND DANCERS will recover from the blow.
Carrion Bird Cinematic Humor: VALARION II: THE REMATCH. Big woman! OCTAVIA kills
LISSANE TYL DRU. Who ya gonna fight next, OCTAVIA--Minnie Mouse? I hope SAND
DANCERS has a good enough fighter to beat the snot out of OCTAVIA. Yes, and another
'Belly up' warrior silhouette goes on top of the POSSE guildhouse this week, as
LONESTAR dispatched VALARION. Good going! Knowing when to use the right tactics at
the proper time is a very important step on the road to Duelmaster.
Well, there's the manager of the DAL SHANG giving me the 'cut' sign (or is that
'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the world's
best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. And remember, you
can pick your friends and you can pick your--(loud boos), oh, you've heard that one
already!-- The Unknown Spymaster

Well after a lot of headaches and some disappointments, Annabel got her invite to the

on the isle. We'll see how it goes. Here are her vitals for those who care: 13-6-

Gonna shoot for trem and have some fun. -- Hollowshade

Chiana -- You know, that sort of thing really gravels my drawers. And I don't CARE
what people say about "style advantages," either! -- Lissane tyl Dru
P.S. Good fight.

Bobika Vhett -- For someone who died recently, you're darned lively. OUCH! --
Joevina Saril
P.S. You probably (hopeful look) need a "native guide" for things like the street
markets and stuff, don't you?

Decoy -- (alarmed look) Does that mean there was something I should have noticed and
didn't, while fighting you? Somebody sneaking up behind me, or...I don't know,
SOMETHING I should have seen? Are you luring me into trouble? -- Karzin Tyrn the
Worried

Black Velvet -- Well, I just couldn't hit you. (blushing) You remind me too much of
Dolla the Elephant, which is NOT an insult. We had some wild times together. --
Merro Dosh
P.S. But it's been years, and I haven't seen her around for a long time.

Ah, standbys. Wins are where you find them, and this one makes a good beginning.
I'll take it. -- Lorin ten Koro

Loner and Annabelle Blackheart -- Our congratulations. -- the Sand Dancers

Chiana -- Yes, well, it can be risky, that's true. -- Ghost of Londel

Made It Home -- And so, I am delighted to say, did I! -- Gobarl, Lord Protector,
retired

Lonestar -- (sigh) A hotshot. Just what I needed to make my day. (sigh) Good
fight on your part, and one of the best students I've seen lately. I commend you. --
Modoram

Ed. -- "Turducken"? Should I know this name? -- Gobarl, now having time to
experiment

     De-boned turkey stuffed with a de-boned duck, stuffed with a small de-boned
chicken. The cavity of the chicken and the rest of the gaps are filled with
normal stuffing or sausage. It's always seemed like overkill to me. -- Ed.

The Council of Lords would like to propose a rule change in ADM and Primus. We
propose that Lord Protectors ranked "Grand Champions" and below (ADM) and "The Tower
Guard" and below (Primus) be allowed to fight in the Dark Arena. This would not
impact the top rankings or title match. Any managers who never got his fill or shot
at fighting Gateway monsters would have it as an option. We believe it might spark
some interest in the ADM/Primus realm for some managers. If interested, speak up in
the newsletters or on forums under the "rules changes" thread and let RSI know. This
could even be something to try for 12 months and then be re-evaluated. What say you,
managers of Ghea? -- The Icelord sends....

     HDFA Mission Statement
     "Show me the money!"
This is the battle cry of a newly formed collection of like-minded individuals:
The High Dolla' Free Agent$. We are not a tough guy alliance: No...we offer no
battle without reward. We search for victory and the prizes and accolades that
follow. We are motivated by winning and will freely use whatever means necessary to
obtain our currency. No stuffy rules, no mandates, no constitutions, no leaders,
only a few objectives:
     1) Win as often as possible
     2) Celebrate freely and revel in your victories; the more meaningless the
victory the more we celebrate. Highsiding and chest thumping are encouraged.
Ostentatious endzone celebrations with prop usage are encouraged, regardless of
fines, penalties, suspensions or arrest by local authorities. It is important to let
your opponent know how great you are; more importantly, you must let your own
alliance mates know how great you are.
This is a 1-up alliance, let the performance of your fellow Free Agent$ motivate
you. If a Free Agent wins a TV, win 2; if a Free agent wins a contest, win a more
prestigious one.

* I agree to abide by the decisions of the Player Committee.
* I understand that any warrior that participates in a Tournament shall be sent to
the Dark Arena until they are dead.
