Dal Shang:

"No lifiting, no jumping, no sparring. Your stitches need more time to heal,"
the doctor said to Synthia as she slid her feet into her boots. "We don't want to
see you back here with an infection or a re-opened wound because you felt you needed
to teach someone a fancy attack move."
Synthia stood, wincing a bit before she took the pen and signed the release
form. "You don't have to worry," she said, smiling a little as she handed back his
pen.
"Very well, then." He opened the door for her. "You're lucky, you know. That
wound would have killed many people. The gods are smiling on you."
Her smile was more of a grimace now. "I'll have to pray more, then," she said,
sarcasm obvious in her voice.
The doctor frowned. "I'll see you in one week," he said, following her into the
hallway. "Be safe, young woman." With a curt nod, he strode down the hallway to the
left.
Synthia turned to the right. Killjoy was waiting for her in the lobby area when
she emerged from the back of the clinic. Pacing. Synthia's mouth twitched into a
smile. How like Joy! Synthia limped over to her. "Let's go home."
Killjoy had a carriage waiting, so that Synthia wouldn't have to walk, even
though it was only a couple of miles. And once she had her friend carefully
installed on the seat, she told Synthia everything that had happened while she had
been in the hospital. How Hobgoblin had stolen the sword Windsong from the
guildhouse, and Aranthar had taken Octavia and set out to hunt him down. How Sitha
Nisanli and Bobika Vhett had gotten help from Wild Weasel and Lameto and Jinx to
catch up to them. And how she herself had stayed behind to gather more help and
information in order to find the rest of the swords. And finally how their dear
friend Valarion had been killed in the arena.
"A lot has happened while I was away," Synthia said. "What can I do to help?"
"Nothing!" Killjoy said sharply. "We are going to get you better first."
Synthia smiled, shaking her head a little. Both of them knew that was easier
said than done. Things would come up. They always did. The two women rode in
silence the rest of the way.

In the North Woods, not far from the castle of Tennerus:

Smoke rose above the trees behind them as the eight warriors approached the
castle. They were walking their horses, no hurry, no agitation. They were here to
do a job of work. Man-O-War, Sitha Nisanli, and Bobika Vhett were in the front,
behind them came Octavia and Triss, and Wild Weasel, Lameto, and Jinx brought up the
rear.
Triss leaned in close to Octavia so that only her companion could hear. "Only
me and Aranthar know what you did," she said. "We have agreed not to tell the
others." She straightened again, not waiting for any answer.
Octavia closed her eyes. Shame for what she had done rose up in her again, but
this time she knew that she had true friends.
"Looks like Hobgoblin is already there," Aranthar called back to the others.
"We need to hurry."
Everyone spurred their horses into a sprint.

Dal Shang, Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse:

Killjoy and Synthia walked into the house to find bags sitting in the front
hall. They looked at each other and shrugged, mystified.
Salicia, Valarion's wife, came out of the back of the hall, holding the hand of
her five-year-old son Victor. "I'm sorry," she said, eyes on the floor. "I had
hoped to be gone before you got back, but Victor needed to go to the bathroom. It...
it's a long trip back to Simtakka."
"Back to Simtakka? Why?" Killjoy asked.
"We are from there." Salicia lifted her head proudly. "I will need to find
work, and it will be easier there."
"Nonsense!" Killjoy shook her head firmly. "You will stay here."
     "I couldn't intrude--"
     "And you wouldn't be."
"Joy, we are not your burden to carry."
"There is no burden, Salicia. You are family to us."
"But... the agreement you had with Valarion...."
"What? The Armory? The stables? He wanted to do those things, Salicia, he was
never obligated to do them." Joy took Salicia by the hand and walked her into her
office, leaving Victory and Synthia in the hall.
"I don't understand," Salicia said. "The agreement for us to stay here was that
he would work for you. Was that not true?"
"In a way. We did make that agreement," Killjoy said. "But it was long after I
had already allowed you to move in. I agreed to let him have his blacksmith shop,
and you know how much he loved the horses. Salicia, it would be my pleasure, it
would please all of us, to have you and Victor remain in the house."
"I couldn't do so without some form of payment," Salicia said. "I must earn my
way."
"Okay, then. Synthia will need a lot of help as she is recovering from an
injury. You will take care of her and make sure she heals properly. This is very
important, Salicia. She will not like it and will resist, she would ignore the
injury if she could. You'll have to stand firm and never back down from her. Do you
accept this task?" Killjoy stood silent while Salicia thought it over, studying the
taller woman.
After a few moments, Salicia nodded. "I do accept it." She smiled. "And thank
you, Joy."
Killjoy nodded back. "Okay. Let's get started, then."

The castle of Tennerus:

Man-O-War called the group to a halt before the gate and dismounted, handing his
horse's reins to Sitha. One look through the gate was enough to tell them that
Hobgoblin had been and gone. The courtyard was filled with dead bodies and parts of
bodies scattered widely, and the stench was nearly unbearable. A quick scan revealed
no obvious clues.
"We'll have to search more carefully," he said. "Groups of two. Do not
separate from each other. Octavia, you are with me."
Everyone paired up, Sitha with Bobika, Weasel with Triss, and Lameto with Jinx,
each pair exploring a different part of the castle.
Man-O-War had Octavia lead him to the rooms used by Tennerus. Nothing in his
bedroom. They moved on to what Octavia said he had called his study. It was a large
room, and it had been wrecked. There were books thrown all over; the glass-fronted
cases they had come from had been smashed, adding broken glass to the debris. A
broken sword, the blade near the door, the hilt next to the outer wall under a
window. Scratched on the floor next to the hilt were the words: "Twisted Lands,"
and then "Ini Palel."
"Twisted Lands?" Man-O-War frowned as he said it. "What does Hobgoblin need
there?"
Octavia shrugged. "Who knows? But I have a feeling that we need to reach him
before he gets there."
     "Agreed."

                                      SPY REPORT

Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day,
I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! What's a move up by 4 you ask? (alright,
maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to OZ 2. SAND DANCERS posted
a nice gain, to come in 2nd. Everybody loves a winner... A certain someone should
cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 12 points to KORKA THE
HAIRY. (Discrete enough, BETTER DUCK?) Like a flirtacious debutante, DAL SHANG's
Duelmaster REVEREND BLOOD found himself the man of the hour, being "invited to dance"
4 times! The arena was more crowded than usual this time, as AMORE' faced DAL
SHANG's Duelmaster. REVEREND BLOOD successfully staved off a grab for the roses by
AMORE' of STUMBLIN' DRUNK. Does DAL SHANG have no one talented enough to dethrone
him? Word has it one team in DAL SHANG is using psychics to predict wins. They lead
a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Perhaps the warriors of STUMBLIN' DRUNK should
take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... Like a pup with its tail
between its legs, GOT IT FOR CHRISTMAS scurried away from STUMBLIN' DRUNK. Oh, the
shame! Take heed DAL SHANG, of the unprincipled action of MADE IT HOME. By
challenging IRISH CREAM, 25 points below him, MADE IT HOME besmirches the noble art
of dueling. MADE IT HOME beat IRISH CREAM with a point difference of 25. So this is
what DAL SHANG calls a duel. This will make an interesting tale. LUCKY DUCK
challenged CHIANA! Who says MIGHTY DUCKS are just a bunch of wimps! LUCKY DUCK of
MIGHTY DUCKS kept his wits as he won victory over CHIANA.
Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after
life! You've heard about MODORAM of REFUGEES. Death plays no favorites, and neither
do I. What was a 7-11-0 doing on the fields in the first place? Never one to
advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see TIL DEATH DO US PART retaliate
against POSSE in bloodfeud! Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee.
Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. Like a mixed
metaphor, and an overtaxed simile, I now bid DAL SHANG farewell-- Novgorodny Vir

Steelhorse -- You're on our list, so one of us must have fought you, but I don't see
a personal addressed to you in this year's archives. THEREFORE! *I* get to say,
probably for the second time but only the first this year, "Cool name." But what
does a steel horse eat? -- Lorin ten Koro
P.S. Besides skills.

B.B. Sage -- Are you going to suggest that this was all in "good, clean fun"? If
so... well, I won't hit you, because you'd just hit me back, but I'll pout. --
Joevina Saril

Coconut -- Wow, you're as slippery as a bar of soap, too! I was just thinking, "Now,
there's a cute little thing," and wham, you're hitting me already. -- Merro Dosh

Bobika Vhett -- That was a tricky one. Let's try it in the practice room with
blunted blades where we don't have to worry about killing each other, eh? I bet we
could learn stuff. -- Karzin Tyrin

Mojito -- Ah, you could be one of us! -- Modoram
P.S. Although Jorja would probably tell you not to drink before the fight. She says
it doesn't really help.

Bobika -- Yes! And very, very clean. If you don't mind the scent of sage. --
