"This is what I think we should do. Sitha, Bobika, and Octavia will come with me to Ini Palel. The rest of you stay here and search for information the location of the rest of the swords. Octavia said Tenerus has researched it quite extensively, so the information is probably still here. You should start in his study." Manowar turned to Sitha who was standing behind him and raised an eyebrow in a silent request for comment. "I want to go with you." Triss's voice was as close to a command as any of them had ever heard it. Manowar looked back over his shoulder at her. "No, Triss. We need you to help with the other swords." "He... it... has mine," she said. Manowar caught her shoulders so that she had to meet his eyes. "Don't worry, we'll get it back for you. But you know more than anyone else about these swords. You'll be better able to understand what information is found. We need you here, and we are wasting time. It's a long way to the Twisted Lands." He held her shoulders, held her gaze until she dipped her head in agreement. "When you are sure you know where they are, go back to Dal Shang. Joy will have help by them," Manowar said. "Aranthar, here." Weasel handed him the sword Angelfire. "You might need this." Manowar smiled. "Thank you, my friend." "Be safe," Weasel said. "Be safe," Manowar returned. When they had watched the four who were leaving out of sight, Lameto turned to his companions. He took a breath that was almost a sigh. "Well... let's find some swords," he said. On the road: "The Twisted Lands," Bobika said in his best spooky voice. "Sounds menacing." "There are a lot of things down here that are different from the way they are up in Kekoral," Manowar said. "I'm beginning to see that." Bobika sounded a bit sarcastic. Manowar snorted. "You aren't... scared, are you?" he teased. "HA! Bring it on! Besides, how bad could it be, anyway?" Both men began to laugh. The two women remained silent. They both knew that the Twisted Lands were nothing to laugh at. On a different road: I have never been to Ini Palel before." Frac's voice seemed to come out of nowhere, out of a silence that had held for hours, since they'd left the castle. "I have," Savra said. "A lot of Clawmoon there." "Clawmoon, huh? They can be a tough lot." "The Clawmoon does not concern me," Hobgoblin said abruptly. "They have been around a very long time," Savra countered. "They might have some information we need," Frac added. "I don't want anything to do with them," Hobgoblin said. He spat, his irritation becoming apparent. "We may have no choice. They may wonder what we are doing there. After all, it's their turf," Savra answered. "We might find it useful to--" "If they want to know what I'm doing, let them try and find out. They will regret sticking their noses into my business," Hobgoblin growled. "I'm just saying they could help--" "Silence, necromancer!" Hobgoblin shot her a hard look, so loaded with the power of his dark personality that it was almost a spell. Her mouth snapped shut. "I won't need their help," he said. "I know where we are going." He glanced at Tenerus, who was bound on the back of Frac's horse. "There are ruins east of the city. Very old ruins. That's where we will be going. Clear?" Savra and Frac nodded, and they rode on in silence. Dal Shang: "Very well, Killjoy has already signed her side, so all that remains is yours. Then it will be official." The clerk, large, ponderous, very calm, slid the paper across the counter. Salicia took the pen he held out and signed the contract, then handed back the contract and the pen both. The clerk stamped it with an impressive seal and signed his own name across that mark. "Congratulations..." he glanced down at the form to find her newly chosen arena name, "Karma." "Thank you." Salicia smiled. The clerk leaned back, shedding some of his official manner. "You know," he said, "most of the time, the manager needs to be present for this. But the signature matched what we have on file, and you look like an honest person." He paused and looked more closely at her. "You'd better be, anyway." He chuckled, as though at some private joke. "You're committed now." "I assure you, everything is in order." "Very well, then. Good luck, gladiator." In the North, Tenerus's castle: Jinx stood in the doorway of the study and scowled down the hall. "Keep it down out there!" she yelled. Triss looked up from behind stacks of books. All the ones she felt would give them the best chance to find the last three swords she had pulled off the shelves. They would have to be gone through more carefully. Jinx walked back to her, shaking her head. "Those boys," she muttered. Triss pushed one pile of books toward her. "Here, look through these," she said. Jinx sat down with a sigh, picked up a book, and started to thumb through it, trying not to show how much the prospect bored her. "What do I need to be looking for?" she asked. "Anything that speaks of dragons or large beasts or magic swords. Hopefully we'll find SOMETHING. Anything." Triss didn't look up from the book in her hands. Jinx sighed deeply and began to read. Out in the hall, Weasel turned slowly back and forth, like a dog hunting for a scent. "Ha! There!" He pointed to a room near the end. "It's mine!" Lameto ran toward it. "I saw it first," Weasel said, taking off after him. Lameto's head start was enough that he reached the doorway first and cut down the zombie, dismembering it efficiently. "That's seven for me," he boasted. "Where are you at?" "Seven, also," Weasel answered proudly. "You can't count the one with no arms and legs," Lameto argued. "Well, six, then." Weasel frowned, shrugged, smiled. "Let's go find more." In the study, Jinx pushed books away and leaned back, stretching, tilting her chair back on two legs and glaring at the ceiling. "This is taking sooo long," she muttered. "Daggerspine!" Triss said suddenly. "Huh?" Jinx straightened. "I think one might be in the Daggerspine Mountains." Triss put a bookmark in place carefully. Then she reached over and tugged on Jinx's foot, pulling her forward. The chair's front legs hit the floor with a thump. "Here, Jinx, look." She pointed to a paragraph. "This part here," she said. Jinx read it, and her eyes opened wide. She smiled. Triss smiled back. "I think we're going to do this," Jinx said. "It's infamous!" Ardane, spy reporter for Andorak, scowled and drew back his arm to throw his goblet through the window at the crowd outside. Then paused to drain the contents before resuming the about-to-throw-it position. "Now, now, it isn't THAT bad." Desiree of Darkholm, always the voice of sweet reason at these meetings, laid a hand on his, smiled, and guided the goblet back to the table. "It's just a little mistake, you know." "Ha!" Debby Tonte of Free Blades stabbed viciously into her drink with an umbrella. "That's easy for YOU to say. The Delarquans aren't complaining." "Of course not." Galen of Talahya looked faintly envious as she pulled a chunk of pineapple out of her glass and began to nibble it. "That's because the Delarquans are THE Masters of Kung-Fu." "You think some managers are complaining," Olaf Modeen said, "you should hear what the GLADIATORS are saying. All these rumors about the Aimed Blows having 'special enhancements'..." he shook his head. "I know it isn't true, you know it isn't true, the top managers know it isn't true--" "Of course it isn't true!" Ketchum, spy reporter for Crysalis, matched scowls with Ardane and said, "If ANY one style was going to get a special enhancement, it should be--" "Not now, Ketch," Olaf said. "Nobody gets, nobody has gotten, nobody WILL get, special enhancements. That's always been the rule, and we all know how the Greywand hates changes. The real problem--" "Try telling that to some of the managers," Debby muttered, peering into her glass for more fruit. "They don't want to hear it. Every time I turn around, some manager is claiming that someone got a special change and, you know, HE didn't and it's all unfair." "The REAL problem," Olaf said firmly, over-riding her voice, "is explaining to all the second-rate Aimed Blows why they haven't received any of these 'special enhancements' they keep hearing about." "There aren't any special enhancements," Ardane growled. "None. Just managers who noticed that the Kung-Fu Master is a lot more dangerous than anyone expected, and have put YEARS into the study of Kung-Fu and learned how to really USE it for their own gladiators." "Saved a lot on weapons, too," Ketchum murmured. "But people keep complaining," Debby Tonte said. She fished one last piece of fruit out of her glass and stared at it dubiously. "There WERE no special enhancements," Olaf said. "There ARE no special enhancements. There WILL BE no special enhancements. It's all a matter of deep study and skilled management." "Like anyone's going to believe that!" "They have no choice," Ketchum said. "If no 'special enhancements' were given out, then none can be taken back. It is the way it is. What's the point in complaining because the sun rises in the east?" SPY REPORT Well, what are you looking at, DAL SHANG? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for MARY'S SOAPS, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them by 4 into 9th. Ha! KANE'S BANE turned their 0-0-0 turn into a 8th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see JOEVINA SARIL win a fight and gain 22 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, JOEVINA SARIL beat STEELHORSE and STEELHORSE lost 17 points. You're breakin' my heart. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as MAN-O-WAR takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha! Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys. Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, LORIN TEN KORO was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for DAL SHANG's morgue. More variety. I could say I saw this coming, but so could anyone else. Anyway, this turn it came. MADE IT HOME's 21-16-0 has earned him the Dark Arena. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one. What does the DAL SHANG arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that before I leave the fine city of DAL SHANG. I feel much better now.
