She had been at it for hours now, and Hobgoblin was getting impatient. Irritated. More irritated. She had told him it would take time and that, "This is not going to be a normal reanimation." But he didn't care, that was just details. He wanted it done NOW. "Hurry up, witch!" he spat. "This has to be done just right," she muttered, not looking away from her work. "If I'm not careful, we may not get its soul. Don't interrupt me on this again. It needs to be just right, and it will take some time yet. He has been dead a long time. And I'm not a witch." Hobgoblin had a hot retort on the tip of his tongue, but after a moment he shrugged and turned away. Toward Tennerus, who was sitting with his back to the wall and his head on his knees. So weak. So pathetic. He snorted. Tennerus had seemed strong and decisive inside his own castle, and behind his army. Even when he stood behind me, Hobgoblin noted. But it all fell apart, and now look at him. He shook his head and walked over to the prisoner. "On your feet, Tennerus," he growled. "Don't fall to pieces... yet." When the man didn't move right away, Hobgoblin kicked him. Slowly, Tennerus pushed himself to his feet, being careful not to put too much pressure on his wounded hand. Fractured Skull stood back, silent and watching. "Look at yourself!" Hobgoblin sneered. He started to say something else, then paused when the torchlight reflected off moisture on the man's face. "Are you crying?" Tennerus looked away. "The Great Tennerus! Crying--HA!" His lips curled in a deeper sneer, baring jagged teeth. He grabbed his prisoner by the collar and pulled him closer so that their faces were mere inches apart. "If you're scared that you might not survive, don't be, Tennerus. Because you're NOT going to survive. No need to worry about that. Trust me." He pushed Tennerus back against the wall and watched him slide down to the floor again. "Be a man for... whoever you believe in's sake. If any god will have you." Hobgoblin turned his back. There was no pleasure in baiting a worm. He watched Savra instead. She was still working at the spell, her movements almost like a dance. Move once one way, then back the other, her hands waving in a strange pattern. Always coming within inches of the dragon skeleton but never quite touching it. She was chanting something, almost singing it, but he couldn't make out the words. *who are you?* The voice was not one he recognized, and it seemed to come out of nowhere, a harsh whisper that pierced his ears and rattled around in his head. Hobgoblin looked at Fractured Skull, who was just standing next to the doorway, then at Tennerus who was huddled against the wall again. *why are you disturbing me?* "Do you hear that?" Hobgoblin asked Fractured Skull The former gladiator shook his head. "Hear what?" Hobgoblin smiled and walked back toward the dragon's remains. It was talking to him telepathically, he now realized. Savra was still doing her ceremony and didn't seem to have heard it, nor had Fractured Skull nor Tennerus. He wondered why he was the only one. *you smell of Nidra and that pathetic wind magic* Nidra? Is that-- *DON'T TOY WITH ME, ARDENA BENYA!!!* The voice roared like thunder in Hobgoblin's head. *I can smell you, too, and you will NEVER take me back to Turina* Hobgoblin looked down at the sword scabbarded at his belt, then pulled it free. The blade was white now, bright white, with light pulsing in it. He checked on Savra. She seemed to be in a trance, still working her necromantic spells. A green fog now completely encased the dragon's black bones, swirling in and out of the giant rib cage and wrapping around the wing bones, flowing down its spine all the way to the tip of its tail. Hobgoblin walked up to the head of the dragon, which was much larger than his whole body. He formed thoughts without speaking them--no need to let his minions hear what he was saying! *I'm not Ardena, and don't want to take you to Turina. I have Ardena Benya trapped, as well as the rest of those fools that hunt you--* *NO ONE HUNTS ME!!!* The whole chamber shuddered. *I, Kot'neth, DO THE HUNTING!!!* Hobgoblin took a couple of steps back. Fractured Skull's eyes widened; that was the first time he had ever seen Hobgoblin appear to be afraid, and that didn't make him feel any better about this already very uncomfortable situation. *forgive me, Kot'neth. I meant no disrespect to you* Hobgoblin knelt down, placing the sword Windsong in front of the dragon's skull. *that, your magnificence, is Ardena Benya and Nidra* A soft red glow formed in the empty eye sockets of the dragon's skull. Savra kept working on the spell. Hobgoblin stepped back again, then motioned for Fractured Skull to bring over Tennerus. A small shudder rippled down the spine of the great beast, causing the tail to flip when it reached the farthest end. The thud of that echoed throughout the chamber. Hobgoblin grabbed Tennerus by the arm and placed the man between himself and the dragon. Before Tennerus had a chance to fight, he kicked him in the back of the knees, causing him to fall hard into a kneeling position. Tennerus barely felt the shock and the pain when his knees met the hard stone floor. On that floor in front of him was the sword Windsong. This was the only chance he had, the only action he could take now, and he had to get it right. If he was going to die, then maybe he could take this demon with him. He took a couple of deep breaths, gathered all his courage, then grabbed the sword and jumped up, starting to turn. All Hobgoblin's attention was focused on the dragon. This was his chance, the only chance he was going to get-- Tennerus never saw the dragon move as it came alive, never knew what happened to him as the jaws closed over his body. Every bone was crushed, and the sword Windsong clattered across the floor to Hobgoblin's feet. Fractured Skull took a few steps back until he came up against the frame of the huge doorway; his eyes were fixed on the skeletal frame of the dragon. Every bone of it was now moving. As he watched, muscle was beginning to form, blood vessels and organs, a hint of scales. Savra continued weaving her spell, which was clearly working better than even Hobgoblin had expected. Blood and other parts of Tennerus dripped and fell from the teeth of the dragon Kot'neth as it lowered its head toward Hobgoblin. Veins formed and spread across the skull, and the eyes were developing. *I know who you are* The light in the dragon's eye sockets condensed and became a fire in the back of its eyes. For the first time, it spoke so that everyone could hear. "Ahringol told me about you, Hobgoblin." At the edge of the ruins: "What is this place?" Man-O-War asked. "These ruins are what is left of an ancient city from before the Chaos Magic fell. I won't lie to you about this," the Clawmoon agent said, "this place is Evil. There are stories about this place. Stories people tell their children to keep them from being bad. Stories you hear in taverns from old treasure hunters...." "You mean looters and grave robbers?" Sitha asked. She raised an eyebrow. The Clawmoon agent looked down at her. "You're right, we have our share of, ah, undesirables, let us call them, even here in the Twisted Lands. But, correct me if I'm wrong, we are after one of yours here tonight, correct?" "He is NOT one of ours!" she countered. "Okay, okay, let's stay focused here," Man-O-War said, stepping between the two. "Please lead us to this tomb." "Just remember that you're only alive because we allowed it to be so." The agent moved forward. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 619): KEEL HAULER of SEA DOGS (One-Armed Bandit, mgr.) If you're going to engage in adventuring, young man, you need to brush up your combat skills. It's DANGEROUS out there! Grizolpop P.S. Good thing you were graduated when that happened! SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly DAL SHANG games. Former top team MIGHTY DUCKS was unseated this week as SAND DANCERS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-0 record for the round. LUISENYA caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested BOBIKA VHETT and was awarded 18 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, LUISENYA put down BOBIKA VHETT, causing him to lose 17 points of recognition in the process. The city has turned out in honor of OCTAVIA, for with hers arena victory she may now lay claim to the highest position in the city! Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! Many and various are the arts of battle. In DAL SHANG "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! What warrior does not hone his years, impatiently waiting for the moment of his foe's mortality? Some say a warrior is judged by the way he bears arms. One thing is sure, better a dagger in hand then a sword on the belt! A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME OCTAVIA 6890 16 5 2 109 TIL DEATH DO US PART (724) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SORRELISHE 6985 12 5 1 91 SAND DANCERS (233) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GRIZOLPOP 6984 11 6 4 89 SAND DANCERS (233) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CHIANA 6807 14 13 0 66 TIL DEATH DO US PART (724) LUISENYA 6992 8 5 1 58 SAND DANCERS (233) -FLIGHTLESS DUCK 6982 8 10 1 58 MIGHTY DUCKS (720) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -*HAPPY PHANTOM* 5943 7 2 0 54 LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (384) -DUCK CUTLETS 6981 14 6 0 48 MIGHTY DUCKS (720) -*CRUCIFY* 5961 6 8 0 44 LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (384) -VENGEFUL DUCK 6994 2 9 0 43 MIGHTY DUCKS (720) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -CHINA 6101 7 4 0 42 LITTLE EARTHQUAKES (384) BOBIKA VHETT 6914 6 7 0 39 TIL DEATH DO US PART (724) -STUTTER DUCK 7000 5 0 0 39 MIGHTY DUCKS (720) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CHAEGO SARILDAN 6995 6 5 0 31 SAND DANCERS (233) -LAST BEST DUCK 7001 4 1 1 27 MIGHTY DUCKS (720) KARMA 6925 3 6 0 24 TIL DEATH DO US PART (724) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -KALLI ELISABETH 7003 2 0 0 20 HOUSE OF CARDS (380) LOEKER SMITH 7022 1 1 0 4 SAND DANCERS (233) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. Daydream Believer You once thought of me, As a white knight on a steed. Now you know how happy I can be... It's true. I'm gone. I've punched my ticket to Immortality and I'm off to the Isle. I know a lot of you are wondering what it is about me that has made me so successful. I wish I knew for sure. I think it has more to do with intangibles (knack) than it does with design, bonuses and favorites. I'll let you decide. Sigh...I prefer to think my physical characteristics are ideally suited for a finesse style. As for my bases, I know they aren't much to look at. After all, I am a PR. I'm fortunate to be blessed where I need it the most--attack and parry. Okay, so I've got nice bases with bonuses in the right spots. What about favorites? Did I know them in advance or did I change them? The answer is no, I had no idea what they were for sure until I recieved my graduation announcement. I would be happy to tell you what my favorites are but I don't think my clone, Jumpinjack Flash, would be very happy with me if I did. Let's just say that from the moment I stepped on the sands as a Rookie I used the same strategy in EVERY fight. The only thing I ever changed was armor (early on vs. TP's) and attack/defend locations. That should give those of you who have faced me more than once something to think about. You may be interested to know that I am all natural. I haven't had a prize of any type used on me. I'm a freak of nature. It just goes to show you never know when a guy like me will walk into your guildhouse looking for work as a gladiator. It's up to you to spot the potential and nuture it along. I'm going to list my tourney results and records versus each style. It isn't meant to be a brag--I just thought you might find it interesting and a lot easier than looking it up yourself. Enjoy! I think that has more to do with which ABs I fought rather than the style as a whole. I was 3-1 vs ABs early on (Rookies-Champs) and 4-10 in Challengers. I was 1-5 vs Marv, 0-1 vs Marv Jr and 0-3 vs Soulsnare. I am going to make an educated guess and assume they all had skills or prizes added to them to make them competetive at the Challenger level where so few ABs are. I could be wrong, though I doubt it.
