In the ruins near Ini Palel:

Sitha swung her sword again, putting plenty of strength into it and nearly
decapitating the zombie in front of her. It fell over, but right behind it was
another one ready to take its place. At her back, Bobika Vhett was pushing back more
zombies; they just kept coming. Zombies weren't clever fighters, but they were
persistent. A few slashes ending with a lunge to the head, and another one fell at
her feet. With a small gap in the attack, she took a chance for a quick look at Man-
O-War on her right.
He was slashing and hacking with the power sword Angelfire. Its long blade was
glowing red and even looked as though it were on fire. The zombies on the ground
around him all had scorch marks on them. She had never seen anything like that
before, and she was sure Aranthar had not, either, but he seemed so at ease with the
magical blade, almost a natural with it.
At his back fought the mysterious man who had offered to help them find and stop
Hobgoblin. He had been very careful to conceal his name and why exactly he wanted to
help, but she was glad they'd accepted his offer. Not only had it gotten them out of
that mess with the pit fights, but the extra sword was invaluable in dealing with
what seemed to be a never-ending horde of zombies.
But it would probably be a good idea not to bring up the sword of power that
Hobgoblin had, just as a precaution. No one can be too careful, especially when
dealing with unknown people met in Ini Palel and wearing crescent-shaped pendants.
The last thing they were going to need was to end up chasing or being chased by a
whole organization, especially when that organization is almost certainly the
Clawmoon.
She shook her head and returned her focus to the task at hand, surviving this
attack of the undead.
"Where did all these zombies come from?" Octavia said, slicing at one in front
of her.
"They're coming from everywhere, can't you see that?" one of the Clawmoon's
field agents snarled. Unsaid but implied by the tone was a finishing phrase, "you
stupid woman!"
"This place is cursed," another said. "We shouldn't be here--"
The ground shook, hard. A wall crumbled to the ground nearby, the rest of the
old building sagging after it.
Man-O-War's gaze met Sitha's. "What was th--?" His voice was drowned by a
mighty roar.

Inside the Dragon Chamber:

Kot'neth rolled his head back and forth, working his new bones and muscles. Now
fully formed, he extended his legs and his upper body crashed into the ceiling,
causing debris to fall toward the waiting humans. The cramped quarters--cramped for
the dragon--made it obvious that this chamber had been built around Kot'neth after he
was dead, perhaps by people who had never seen him alive. Or never expected him to
need the space his living and moving body required. The Great Dragon stomped his
foot and let out a stone-shattering roar. Even with their ears cover, Hobgoblin,
Fractured Skull, and Savra found the volume almost unbearable.
The Dragon looked down at the three standing before him and bared his teeth.
"What is this place, demon?" Kot'neth growled.
"Your temple, Great One." Hobgoblin bowed. Fractured Skull and Savra decided
it would be a good idea to follow his lead here. "We are yours to command."
Kot'neth studied them for a moment. "You." He looked at Savra. "You're the
one that brought me back."
Savra stepped forward and bowed her head. "Yes, m'lord."
     "WHY?" he demanded.
Before she could respond, Hobgoblin stepped forward. "You are needed, there
is--"
"Silence, demon!" He snapped his massive head toward Hobgoblin. "I don't
recall asking you." He turned slowly back toward Savra.
Hobgoblin narrowed his eyes but kept quiet. He understood that he had to
swallow his pride for now.
"Times are not good," Savra began as the black dragon watched her. "Your
fellowship has all but died out. Sheila Greywand is forming an army of immortals on
the Lake of Mist. She claims it's to defend Ghea from what is beyond the Chaos
Gates. But we know better. As we speak, men and women across Ghea are training.
M'lord, we beg you. Please help us."
"Chaos Gates? That's what she is calling them, is it?" There was a grim
amusement in the dragon's voice.
"There is more, Great One." Hobgoblin took a chance on speaking again.
Kot'neth allowed it. "As I said before." He pulled the sword Windsong free and held
it before him across his two hands so that the dragon could see it fully. Kot'neth
pulled back and snorted, fire dancing inside his mouth. His breath was furnace hot.
"We know that this sword--this sword of power," he corrected himself, "holds the soul
of your enemy Ardena Benya, as well as the dragon Nidra's ability."
"Nidra was hardly a dragon, by name only.... Al of them were weak. True power
falls to MY kind: the Chaos Dragons." He lowered his head and sniffed at the sword.
"But that is of Nidra."
     "There are more," Hobgoblin began.
     "Four more!" Kot'neth interrupted.
"That's right. If we can get them all--"
"Say no more, demon!" the dragon growled. He looked at the three standing
before him. "I need a rider." He studied them for a moment longer. Then he reached
out and grasped Savra, then Fractured Skull, one in each 'hand'. He held them
tightly, not squeezing but not giving them any wiggle room. "You, demon... you're my
rider!" He hunched down farther, until he was face to face with Hobgoblin. "But you
need a new name. From now on, your name is N'ightmor."

Outside:

Two arrows flew by, hitting the last zombie in the head no more than an inch
apart. The archers were Clawmoon agents that had come along with their mysterious
leader to help on this mission.
"Great shooting, guys." Man-O-War turned to Sitha. "Are you okay?"
"Tired, but otherwise fine," she said.
"Me, too, but we need to hurry. They must be inside--"
The whole top of the tomb exploded as he spoke. Bricks and shaped stones, slabs
of plaster and shards of glass, rained down on them. A dragon rose above the tomb,
Hobgoblin on his back, hovered over it, and let loose a ball of fire that engulfed
the two archers. The rest ran for cover.
Before Man-O-War and Sitha could reach safety, the dragon turned toward them and
exhaled more fire, this time in a steady stream. By instinct, Man-O-War raised
Angelfire as if to block an ordinary blow. The stream of fire split at the blade,
leaving a bubble-shaped space of safety around the gladiator. Sitha huddled behind
Man-O-War. The dragon roared, the sound full of fury and frustration, and flew away.
Man-O-War turned to Sitha and wrapped his arms around her. "I thought that was
it for us," he said."
"So did I." She nuzzled her head into his shoulder, shaking a little.
Bobika, Octavia, and the only two surviving Clawmoon agents came out of their
hiding places and joined them.
"Well!" The Clawmoon field leader dusted himself off, then looked up. "I think
we need to talk about this."

                                      SPY REPORT

It is I, Novgorodny Vir, Spymaster of Spymasters. Look on my work, ye mighty,
and despair! TIL DEATH DO US PART had cause to celebrate, after BOBIKA VHETT got 17
points by beating KORKA THE HAIRY. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking
and practice more, after losing 2 points to CHAEGO SARILDAN. (Discrete enough,
KARMA?) OCTAVIA successfully staved off a grab for the roses by SORRELISHE of SAND
DANCERS. Does DAL SHANG have no one talented enough to dethrone her? So who's the
team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering milk? Sounds like a PR
stunt to me.
My mother wished me to avoid conflict, and seek the gentle trade of Spyreporter.
But warriors aren't supposed to avoid fights!
Like the wind whispering among the pines, do hearest I many disquieting rumors.
Ask not a spymaster for counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen
into an unconscious stupor.
Do not think spyreporting in DAL SHANG is the highlight of my life. My fingers
tire and I fear my incessant prattling may cause unfair judgement upon my impeccable
character. DAL SHANG, I leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at
The Blazing Unicorn. 'Til next time-- Novgorodny Vir
