Caer:

"Please, Mr. Samnend, can we talk about the shield now?" Triss asked. She was
growing very impatient. For the past hour he had been talking about everything but
the shield, and she was ready to be done with the small talk and get on with the
quest.
Ban'ale finished his shot and popped the small glass down on the table,
frowning. The sharp sound of the glass coming down was startling and cut through the
young woman's impatience and single-mindedness. "You come into my joint," he said,
"demand to speak with me--taking away from the comfort and relaxation of my home, you
start a fight, break tables and glasses, cause me to buy everyone a round--" He
stared at her with his dark eyes.
Triss looked down at her hands on the table, suddenly ashamed; it felt like a
scolding from her father.
"And to top it all off, you refuse to have a drink with me." He sat back in his
chair. "Why would I want to help you?"
Triss shifted her eyes to the small glass in front of her. Was that really all
that was keeping him from helping them? She reached out, grabbed the glass between
thumb and finger, and took a sip. It felt like swallowing liquid fire. She gasped
for air as she fanned herself with her free hand.
Ban'ale was smiling now. "That wasn't so bad, was it?" He chuckled and
swallowed another shot. "Okay," he said, and stood. "Before we dive into this old
beat-up shield you are so eager to hear about, I need something from you." He walked
over to a door that led out onto a balcony, opened it, and stepped out, leaning on
the railing and looking down.
Triss, Jinx, and Lameto followed him out.
"What is it?" Triss asked. She smiled a little, eager to do what he wanted so
they could get on with the quest.
Ban'ale looked her up and down, then did the same to Jinx. After a moment, he
gestured for them to turn and face away from him. They did, but Triss looked over at
Jinx, suddenly worried. Jinx smiled and winked.
"Last week my entertainment left for, well, let's just call it a vacation. You
two will be filling in for them."
     "Ban'ale, this is--"
He cut Lameto off. "I'm not making them whores," he snapped. "They will sing.
They will dance. They will serve drinks. I don't need more whores. Besides, they
wouldn't make me enough money doing that." He turned his back to them and stared
into the night. "Take it or leave it."
"Fine," Lameto said quickly. "We'll take it." The two women shot him looks
that promised retribution. "How long?"
"Three days," Banale said just as quickly. "Ladies, go down and see Enom at the
bar. He will introduce you to Lady Peroitia." He looked back at the two women, who
had not moved, and made a brushing away gesture with his hand. "Go on."
With a final glare at Lameto, they turned and left the room.
"Look, Ban'ale, we'll be grateful for your help, but all we're trying to do is--
"
     "One minute, it's Lameto, right?"
     "Yes."
"One minute, Lameto." He walked to the door and leaned on the railing above the
bar again. "Listen up, you dirty sons of bitches! Those two are not whores, so that
means keeping your grubby hands off them!" Then he turned back to Lameto and spread
his hands as if to indicate that he had done everything necessary.
Lameto couldn't think of a thing to say, but he was startled, even a little
shocked. If that was the way he treated his patrons, how could he stay open?
"Not whores.... Who's not a wore?" Weasel sat up, rubbing his head.
"Feeling better now?" Ban'ale asked, sitting behind his desk again. When Weasel
nodded, he went on, "Good, because dancing girls are not what I really need. I need
swords."

Near Jade Mountain:

The dragon Kot'neth glided into the valley west of Jade Mountain. He circled
one spot a few times to make sure it was the right place, then flipped his wings a
couple of times to reduce speed to nearly hovering at one end of the valley. He
released Fractured Skull and Savra there, so he wouldn't crush them on landing,
glided a little farther, and tipped back to lose all air speed and settle to the
ground himself. Once down, he stood proud and strong, flapped his wings twice more,
and then folded them neatly across his back. Hobgoblin climbed down from his perch
at the base of the dragon's neck.
Savra and Frac leaned against each other for a few minutes, enjoying being on
the ground. Who would have thought the wind in the sky would be so cold during the
summertime? Or that flying would make a person sicker than travel by boat. They
watched the water crash over the Black Falls as it fed the river that ran through
Jade Mountain. Farther up the valley, on a high shoulder of the mountain, stood
Castle Lucan, where the rulers of the valley had lived since before anyone kept
track.
"He is in there," Kot'neth said finally.
Hobgoblin turned to face the dragon. "Who is?"
"Niskna Agam." When the others didn't react, Kot'neth went on, "The water
dragon."
Hobgoblin smiled. The water sword. Good!
"Mount again, N'ightmor. We will go in. You other two stay here and await us."
The two of them were glad for the rest and stood back while Hobgoblin climbed up
the dragon's leg and seated himself at the base of its neck again. Leaping upward,
clawing at the air with its wings, the dragon lifted off the ground.
"It would probably launch more easily off the edge of a cliff," Savra said.
"I'm surprised it can get all that weight into the air at all this way." She threw
up an arm to protect her eyes from the leaves and small branches blown into the air
by the laboring wings.
The dragon circled back until it was two hundred yards from the falls, then flew
straight into it at the best speed it could manage. It struck the waterfall about
half way up and disappeared into it.

                             Notes from the arena champ.

Oh, for pete's sake! It doesn't feel REAL for me to be graduating after
fighting mostly standbys.

                                     Grizolpop

P.S. Not that I'm exactly complaining!

                                      SPY REPORT

You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to DAL SHANG once again! What's with SUMMER RAIN? He actually
beat SAND DANCERS' SORRELISHE, and walked away with 30 more points from the fight.
Laughs were big at WEATHER while they watched SUMMER RAIN clobber SORRELISHE. She
lost 26 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. CHIANA was
reminded on the sands why GRIZOLPOP is Duelmaster. I suppose you want to hear some
rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges...
Warriors of DAL SHANG unite. You have only your games to lose! How long have I
been here? I got people to see, places to go...
Well, I'm pretty much through. You guys need to get back practicing. All work
and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen

Chiana -- A real opponent! I almost don't mind losing, to be matched against a real
opponent. Not that the standbys aren't real, in one sense, I mean, if a standby
kills me, I'm just as dead, but, well, you know what I mean, don't you? -- Luisenya

Bobika Vhett -- Good gods, man, how did you let me jump you? -- Chaego Sarildan

I dunno what Griz is talking about, I like defeating standbys just fine. -- Loeker

We salute our tourney participants. Zalgor, get your teams active again! -- Jorja

Lord Protector Grizolpop -- Want to make that title more than words? We have a piece
of land up on the northern border of Dal Shang Province that is in dire need of

P.S. This isn't a piece of farmland, by the way, although it could be the site,
