They were just inside the mouth of an enormous cave. The steady roar of the falls behind them filled the cavern, making it hard to hear anything else. The cave itself was huge, large enough that Kot'neth had no trouble standing up and moving around without touching the walls or ceiling. The light coming from behind them was faint, dimmed by the water, and it faded fast into the darkness ahead. "Niskna is in here." The dragon shook off the last drops of water and began moving deeper into the cave. Hobgoblin lit a torch, then pulled Windsong free of its scabbard and walked beside the dragon. Kot'neth snorted and flinched--just a little, but Hobgoblin noticed. He was careful not to mention that, though. It seemed that every time he pulled out Windsong, there was a reaction from Kot'neth. It was almost like he was afraid of the sword. "Could this Niskna still be alive?" Hobgoblin asked. "Not likely, the Water Dragon was the oldest of that force. And there is something about this world that is not kind to the dragons of Turina." "So there were several groups, then?" "N'ightmor, you ask a lot of questions." "Excuse me, Great One," Hobgoblin said. He hated sounding servile, but it was clear that the best way to get answers was to play on the dragon's vanity. "I ask because I hope to be a worthy rider. I only desire to know more about you." The dragon flicked a wing; in a human it might have been a shrug. "Yes, demon, there were several groups of those pathetic Dragon Knights." He opened his mouth and sent a ball of flame blazing down the passageway, lighting it up. "It took five of the, and they still couldn't stand up to just one Chaos Dragon." "Why did you come here in the first place?" "Enough questions," Kot'neth growled. He moved through an arched gateway into a large chamber. Hobgoblin hurried after, holding his torch up. By that single light he could just make out some kind of figure in the middle of the room. Surely the Water Dragon's remains. He circled the chamber quickly, sticking more torches into crevices and lighting them, then returned to the center of the chamber to look at the skeleton. It lay there curled up as if it had just placed its head down to take a nap and never woken up again. The bones were pure white and mostly in perfect condition, except for one back leg. The bones there had deep gouges in them. Hobgoblin inspected the dragon, looking all over but finding no indication of the sword that should be present. "I gave him that wound," Kot'neth boasted, indicated the leg. "He never recovered from that." "I can't find the sword. You can sense it here, right?" Hobgoblin stopped searching and looked at Kot'neth. "No, demon. Banden is not here. Just Niskna, that's what I said." The dragon stepped closer to the skeleton and crouched to sniff it. Hobgoblin clenched his fist. This dragon was really pissing him off, and probably doing it on purpose. Kot'neth tilted his head toward Hobgoblin as though he could read his thoughts. "Do I anger you, N'ightmor?" "It's my impatience, forgive me." Hobgoblin bowed his head, suppressing a curse. He would have to be more careful. He didn't want to be more careful. This dragon owed him--it was him, Hobgoblin, who had arranged to bring it back to life. "You must trust me, N'ightmor," Kot'neth said. "Now leave the room." Pressing his lips together to hold back all the words he didn't dare say to this creature here and now, Hobgoblin walked out and down the hallway, back toward the waterfall. Behind him, Kot'neth stared at the skeleton. "Niskna, old friend," the dragon mocked, "you have been chasing me a long time." He walked around the remains. "Now look at you! Ha! "Ahringol does not accept us. You no longer have me to fight in that plane of existence, so now you wander. You wander with the rest of your useless kind." He stopped in front of the dragon's skull. "But I got out. I'm free--to do whatever I want to these worthless humans. And there is nothing you can do to stop me this time!" Kot'neth released a stream of fire that filled the chamber with flames. Hobgoblin stopped and looked back to see what had happened. Slowly, the fire died down, and Kot'neth walked up to the charred remains. He reared back and smashed his powerful claws down onto them, grinding the bones to dust. "Goodbye, brother," he said triumphantly. Then he turned and went to join Hobgoblin. The two of them walked down the long corridor, back toward the waterfall in silence, almost solemnly. As they neared the curtain of water, Kot'neth spoke. "The sword you're looking for is in Castle Lucan. I felt it when we came into this valley. You and Fractured Skull will retrieve it." "It will be done," Hobgoblin said, and smiled. Just north of Caer: It was early morning; the sun had barely begun its journey across the sky and the grass was still damp with dew. Wild Weasel and Lameto walked up the path that led to one of the mining camps that were scattered through the mountains. Ban'ale Samnend had told them about this one: Over the past few months, the camp had been repeatedly raided by orcs, a large and--for orcs--well organized group of them. They were said to come down from higher up the mountain, kill the miners, and steal their ores. Ban'ale also said that he'd tried to get the city guard to help protect the camp, but Lord Governor Rehinda refused to assist him in this matter. "It's outside the city's borders," the governor had said--according to Ban'ale, at least. So the two gladiators had agreed to check things out and stop the raids in return for which Ban'ale would lead them to the cave that they hoped held another power sword. They could smell smoke from the camp's morning fires, so they knew they were getting close. "Ah, you gotta love the morning air, so crisp, so refreshing!" Weasel stretched his arms out to the sides as though to embrace the air itself. "You're telling me--look, there it is. Who are we asking for?" Lameto joined him in the morning stretch. "A fellow named Eran. He's the foreman," Weasel said. "He--" "Thank Chykarin you're here!" A man stumbled down the path toward them, blood on his shirt. "The orcs just attacked!" Dal Shang, Til Death Do Us Part guild house: Man-O-War, Sitha, Octavia, and Bobika dismounted from the horses in the yard behind the guildhouse. Tired and sore from the long ride back from Ini Palel, they were ready to relax a bit. As Man-O-War pulled his bag off the back of his horse, a familiar voice came from the door of the guildhouse. "Well, I certainly hope you don't plan on coming into the house looking like that, Aranthar!" He looked up to see Witchblade standing by the door with a crooked smile on her face and her brother Warblade behind her, arms folded. Man-O-War smiled at them. "As a matter of fact, I do. So you'd better move before I get some of my road dirt on you." He marched toward the door, and Witchblade stepped to the side, wrinkling her nose as they passed by. "I'm glad to see you again, Katerina, and you, too, Gadryal." "As am I." Witchblade frowned, Warblade gave a short bow. She stepped away from the house and looked back. "Come, brother, let's allow them to wash." * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===FREE BLADES REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 9 ZUKAL (turn 626): SEA LEGS of SEA DOGS (One Armed Bandit, mgr.) Sit back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Hey everybody, watch out for BOBIKA VHETT, who flew up 16 points in the rankings after mashing SORRELISHE like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a basher in the top ten was CHAEGO SARILDAN, who dropped 11 points after a disappointing (to say the least) bout with MASTER OF THE EDGE. Well, everybody's pal CHIANA moved hers record to 17-17-0 by defeating LUISENYA in the Duelmaster's Title Bout and gaining 9 recognition points. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps T.P.s at bay. Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the DAL SHANG arena. Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! Ask not the elves for counsel, for they will say both yes and no. Silly buggers, eh? I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of you whom I have not offended yet. Well, there goes another Spy Report. Good luck in next week's fights.
