Near Caer:
Wild Weasel scanned the camp looking for damage, nothing really seemed out of
place. Nothing broken, no real signs of struggle. It was hard to believe there had
been a fight here at all. In fact, if it wasn't for the wounded men being attended
to by the camp doctor and Lameto, it would have looked normal. Everyday. An
ordinary camp.
"So, when did the orcs attack?" Weasel asked the camp foreman.
"About an hour before you got here. We'd just finished breakfast." He pointed
to the dining area.
Weasel looked toward the dining area. Everything there was tossed around,
tables knocked over, forks and plates scattered everywhere. If there was a raid,
then it must have started there. But it still didn't feel right. He shook his head,
not putting his dissatisfaction into words. To the foreman he said, "Okay, gather
your men. Anyone that's capable of using a sword. We will put an end to this once
and for all." He looked along the path that led farther up the mountain. Wild
Weasel had never fought an orc before, but he figured that it should be easy enough
for a couple of Lord Protectors and some angry miners.
"I'll get right to it." The foreman turned to go, then looked back over his
shoulder. "Thank you again."
Weasel watched him leave, shook his head again, and then walked over to the
dining area to inspect the damage more carefully. Nothing was broken, just tossed
around. No blood, and the footprints he could see didn't indicate a fight. Why
would the miners pretend there'd been an attack? And if those men didn't get hurt in
an attack, what happened to them? He needed more information.
Lameto was bandaging a young man's arm. It was a clean wound, and lucky for him
it had missed everything important and he would live to fight another day. "There
you go." He put the finishing touches on the field wrap. "You'll be back in action
in no time."
"Thank you." The young man didn't get up. The look on his face was not pain or
fear but more like remorse. He just sat where he was and stared at the ground.
Lameto frowned. "Hey, kid, are you alright?" No response. He looked around,
and everyone was being taken care of, so he felt he could spend a little more time
with this one. "What's your name?"
"Devin," he said quietly.
"Nice to meet you, Devin." The boy didn't respond. Lameto guessed he might be
in shock, not from the relatively minor wound, but from the fight. "How old are
you?"
"Fifteen," he said, still looking at the ground.
Fifteen? This was no place for someone who was little more than a child, even
without the orc raids. He should be back in town getting an education, hanging out
with friends, or whatever young people did these days. Not fighting for his life.
"Where are you parents?" Lameto asked. When Devin remained silent, he said, "Look,
I'm going to be here a while, so if you want someone to talk to, you come find me,
okay?"
Devin nodded.
Lameto stood up, then reached down and ruffled the boy's hair a bit. Devin
looked up and almost smiled. Lameto smiled back. "You stay here and rest as long as
you want, okay?"
The boy nodded again and watched Lameto walk toward the other wounded men.
Dal Shang, Til Death Do Us Part guildhouse:
"A dragon? Are you serious?" Killjoy was shocked to hear the news.
Aranthar and Sitha, along with Bobika and Octavia, finished telling of the
events down in the Twisted Lands. Also present were Witchblade and her brother
Warblade, Synthia standing next to Joy, and the two new members of the team, Razia
and Agerus.
"Yes. Hobgoblin was riding it," Aranthar said. "If it hadn't been for
Angelfire," he tapped the sword sheathed at his hip, "Sitha and I would not have
survived."
"This is getting out of hand. He needs to be stopped now." Joy turned to
Witchblade. "Katerina, please tell them what you know."
She stepped forward. "Some time ago, I met a man by the name of Tennerus. We
spent, well, call it some time together." She paused to look at Aranthar. "You know
of this man, correct?"
"Yes, he howned the castle Hobgoblin sacked."
"That's a shame. He was a good man." She looked honestly sad, then recomposed
herself. "Well, during our time together, he told me lots of things. Mostly
bragging about how important he was or about the massive fortune he'd amassed over
the years. He was a very proud man. And very ambitious. But there was this one
thing he would always bring up."
"The power swords," Aranthar said.
Witchblade narrowed her eyes at him. "Yes, Man-O-War," she said sharply. She
didn't like being interrupted. "A sword of power." She stared at him coldly for a
moment, then slowly relaxed when she saw that Aranthar had gotten that message loud
and clear.
"He had one sword already, and he'd found out where another one was located. He
was making plans to go recover it. It's up north in Kekoral, Aranthar." She made
eye contact with him again. "You're going home, Knight."
Jade Mountain:
The night was very dark in the Jade Valley. Hobgoblin and Fractured Skull,
dressed in black, moved through the trees and all the way to the walls of Castle
Lucan unnoticed. Hobgoblin held his hand up, and Frac froze in his tracks. After
listening for a moment, Hobgoblin pulled out a grappling hook, spun it around his
head, and launched it over the wall. With a few tugs to make sure it was secure, he
began climbing the rope, moving faster than any normal man might do. Frac started up
behind him.
When Hobgoblin had reached the top, he flung himself up onto the wall and into a
crouch, looking quickly in both directions. "A door at each end," he thought.
"We're going to have to separate."
Frac reached the top and rolled over onto the sentry walk. Hobgoblin made eye
contact with him, then began to gesture. First a finger to his lips. Then pointing
at Frac and the south door, indicating--he hoped--that his companion should go that
way while he took the north door. Last, he pointed toward the moon, and moved his
finger far enough to indicate one hour's motion across the sky. Frac nodded and
headed for his door.
As soon as he was gone, Hobgoblin turned to the north door, slowly pulled it
open, and slipped through.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
That was an opponent? A fight? I thought the announcer had almost swallowed a
bug and was spitting it out, and then I tried to swat it away.... Er, ah, welcome to
Dal Shang, Fsstis.

SPY REPORT
Thankyouthankyou. It's great for me, The Unknown Spymaster to be back in DAL
SHANG. Hope you enjoy the show. Oh, who am I kidding? I already got paid! Hey
everybody, watch out for FLITCHAK, who flew up 25 points in the rankings after
mashing CHAEGO SARILDAN like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And falling like a
basher in the top ten was CHAEGO SARILDAN, who dropped 23 points after a
disappointing (to say the least) bout with FLITCHAK. It's a proud day for the
CASTAWAYS stable, as their warrior, FSSTIS KACHIEU, ascended the Duelmaster's throne.
Can you believe they are paying me 10 gold to deliver this stuff?
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the DAL SHANG arena.
Death is kind of like a new puppy: he's always around wanting to play. (Ha
Zontani, how's that for a wise saying?). Remember: alliances are great, but try and
take your ally in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. C'mon, Leadfoot, let's make some tracks. Hasta la
bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster
